Monitoring HD editing

I am just starting to modify my workflow hardware to accommodate HD post production. I've been doing SD using a Canopus ADVC 100 to monitor footage while I'm editing in real-time. The ADVC 100 inputs from my Mac Pro via FW400 and outputs via standard RCA (red/white/yellow) to a SD TV.
My question is how can I do this using a HDTV with HDMI input? Is there an external box that inputs firewire from the Mac Pro and outputs via HDMI? My PCI slots are all used.
Thanks,
John

Is there an external box that inputs firewire from the Mac Pro and outputs via HDMI?
yes, but it ain't cheap. AJA IOHD. $3500. That is the ONLY FW to HD out there is. The other options take up slots. Or there is the MXO, that is DVI out... $1000.

  • Best $1k-$2k monitor for editing HD video?

I'm finding myself lately doing quite a bit of color correction to HD video footage lately, and my extremely old monitor (Planar PX2611W) just isn't sufficient anymore, so I'm hoping you all might be able to help me. I've looked at a number of different monitors, and am starting to get confused by all of the Gamut discussions and whether they play at all into video editing (or are just for photo editing - which is also important to me), calibration issues (or devices), etc.
What I am looking for is around 27", preferably closer to $1k but willing to go up to $2k'ish, professional grade and calibrated monitor for editing HD video footage (displayed on everything from HD TVs to smart phones) and photos (mostly for web but also definitely do some printing - usually all in the sRGB gamut).
Also looking for calibration device suggestions if the monitor doesn't have such functionality built in.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

    You said:
"It seems the playback is the same when viewed on both monitors."
Both monitors at the same time ? That's the same (or worse) as using only the larger monitor.
You should do the test again using just the older monitor with the smaller resolution.
I believe the higher the resolution the harder the CPU and graphics card has to work. This could mean slowdowns and maybe choppy playback.
A better solution would be to use 2 monitors. The playback monitor should be maybe only 1920 resolution. And in Nvidia panel you should set the hardware acceleration only for this monitors and not for both. On the second monitor you can move most of your toolbars. In this way you will have a giant workspace/resolution - but only 1920 pixels accelerated.
I also bought a NEC PA241W and I searched high and low and could only find discussions about photography and printing. Like calibration and this monitor is good only for printing. And not one discussion on any forum about calibration and After Effects for example. Like the video people are not interested at all in calibration.
I would really like to know if calibration with the X-rite i1Display Pro is also good for video ? Or only for printing.

  • Why can't I see still images in the playback monitor when editing a video?

Why can't I see still images in the playback monitor when editing a video? I have rendered the images in the project.  I checked my system to make sure it meets all the requirements for the software, no problem there.  When I "share" the project and save it as an MPEG, the images show up in WMP just fine.  But I need to be able to see what I'm doing to the stills while I am editing.  Help!

Many thanks for the reply with the details.
But, the key is missing...what version of Premiere Elements are you using? Are you using Premiere Elements 10?
I hope not in this case, but if you are, we will tell you what needs to be done. The following is a copy/paste of the Announcement
at the top of this forum about the Premiere Elements 10/NVIDIA GeForce issue.
Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA Video Card Driver Roll Back
If you are a Premiere Elements 10 user whose Windows computer uses a NVIDIA GeForce video card and you are experiencing
Premiere Elements 10 display and/or unexplained program behavior, then your first line of troubleshooting needs to be rolling
back the video card driver version instead of assuring that it is up to date.
Since October 2013 to the present, there have been a growing number of reports about display and unexplained workflow
glitches specific to the Premiere Elements 10 user whose Windows computer has a NVIDIA GeForce video card. If this applies
to you, then the “user to user” remedy is to roll back the NVIDIA GeForce video card driver as far as is necessary to get rid of
the problems. The typical driver roll back has gone back as far as March – July 2013 in order to get a working Premiere
Elements 10. Neither NVIDIA nor Adobe has taken any corrective action in this regard to date, and none is expected moving forward.
Since October 2013, the following thread has tried to keep up with the Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA reports
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1317675
Older NVIDIA GeForce drivers can be found
    http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us
A February 2014 overview of the situation as well as how to use the older NVIDIA GeForce drivers for the driver roll back
    can be found

    Looking forward to your reply.

  • Lcd tv as g5 monitor to edit final cut hd

Has anyone bought or used any of the 32"westinghouse lcd tvs with dvi input with the g5 to edit with? I am considering buying one to use as a computer monitor. I currently edit with final cut with 2 screens. The model is the 32 inch- available at bestbuy online to view specs.
Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated,
    Candace

    Hi Candace
You may want to check out this link http://forum.ecoustics.com/bbs/messages/2/129823.html
People who have them seem to like them, the only thing I would hesitate on is the max resolution: 1366x766 - I use a the dell 2005fpw running at 1680x1050, and I think if my screen was as big as the Westinghouse, I would want to have a higher resolution to go with it. Remember the Apple Cinema Display 30" can manage 2560x1600, although admittedly it is a bit more expensive

  • No preview on my monitor when editing

I have a sony monitor connected to a sony tape DSR-45 that is connected firewire to my computer G5 os 10.4.11: I know there is a connection because when I log and capture I have the image on my monitor and control settings on the computer with the mouse. When I place the sequence in the timeline for edit, I get the video on the canvas window but not on the sony monitor. I have no idea what to do. None. Please advise. Thank you very much in advance.

Shane's Stock Answer #8: External Monitor Viewing
If you are working with DV, this is simple. First connect your computer to a camera or deck via firewire, Then connect the camera/deck to your TV/Monitor via RCA or S-Video.
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Go to the View Menu, choose > External video > all frames
VIEW>Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
VIEW>Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section.
If you are working with HDV footage, FCP 6 allows you to view this via firewire, but ONLY as downconverted DV. It won't look the best, but you can see it. To do this,
If you need to view any format other than DV at full resolution, then you need to look into capture cards. Several standard definition and high definition models are available from www.aja.com and www.decklink.com. With these options you'll need a proper monitor to view full broadcast colors, but all models allow for realtime standard definition downconvert, allowing you to view HD on an SD monitor.
The Matrox MXO is another option that is output only, but allows you to view your footage on an Apple Cinema Display at full broadcast quality.

  • Single Monitor for editing in iPhoto?

My iBook does not present true colors when editing in iPhoto.
I have gone back to the PC and Photoshop Elements for Windows XP to edit photos.
Then, I export them to iPhoto.
Two Questions: 1) what is a good connector device to connect the iBook and the PC to my excellent Trinitron monitor 2) Is Photoshop Elements for Mac a good photo editing program? (Better than iPhoto?)

I can't answer #1 but the answer to #2 is a resounding YES. You can set iPhoto to open PSE when you double click on a photo while in iPhoto. As long as you do not change the file name or extension you can do a regular save. If you create a layered file, necessitating a new extension, .psd, then you need to save it to the desktop and then import as a new file.
Back to #1, There are connectors that will let you run the Sony from your PB. One that will let you switch between your Mac and the darkside, I'm not so sure about.

  • Monitoring Standard Edition Databases

    Hello,
We are currently an all 9i on Solaris shop that is beginning to work on upgrading to 10g and moving to linux 64 bit where possible. As a part of cutting costs, we are moving several production databases from Enterprise Edition to Standard Edition and likely dropping the Database Diagnostics Pack.
From what I can tell from initial testing with 10gR3 Grid Control and Database Control, I am unable to set Notification Rules, blackouts, etc so that I can manage email notifications.
So, is it true that if using Standard Edition databases or Enterprise Edition databases without the Database Diagnostic Pack, I can't email alert and job notifications? Do these same rules apply if I were to do all my monitoring from Database Control instead of Grid Control?
Thanks for any and all feedback.
    Terry

So, is it true that if using Standard Edition databases or Enterprise Edition databases without >> the Database Diagnostic Pack, I can't email alert and job notifications? That is true. If you go to Setup --> management Pack Access, at the bottom there is a link to a licencing page which gives you details on all the packs and what they allow you to do.
I've never used database control, so I'm afraid I cannot help you on that one.

  • KRK VTX8 Studio Monitors for Editing (sorry for the OT!)

    Hello everybody,
sorry for the little Off topic post, I hope this is the best place to talk about this.
Do you think would be a good idea to acquire a pair of KRK VTX8 Studio Monitors (http://www.krksys.com/product_vxt.php) to use them connected to a mac Pro through a Matrox Mxo2 (http://www.matrox.com/video/en/products/mxo2/) for a video oditing station? Or maybe VTX6 or VTX4 would be better?
    My studio is 4x3 meters.
Am I risking to make my step longer then my leg? To do too much?
    Thank you very much,
    Stefano Bianchi

KRK monitors generally have a pretty good reputation. The VXT line seems to be their mid-price line between the Expose and the Rokit series. I'm more familiar with the discontinued V series, the KRK V6 was a good near-field monitor in its price range.
I'm sure they'd be acceptable for an editing situation, but I'd question the 8" for such a small room. You might be better served with the 6" or even the 4s.

  • Using TV monitor while editing AVCHD footage

How do I do this? Back in the days of MiniDV (standard definition) I was able to wire everything up for this to work, but now I'm struggling!
    Thanks
    Richard

    hey there REKandler,
unfortunately, no. AVCHD/HDV files are converted to AIC to be edited in iMovie08 or FCE4, so they must be rendered & reconverted for output on an external TV, a process not available in real-time. if you choose to get FCE4, you can use the TV w/ a DVI > video adapter & Digital Cinema Preview/Full Screen.
    good luck.

  • Best Monitors for Video editing?

Hey guys. I'm looking at an NEC monitor for editing my stills, and am wondering if this will be suitable for video editing?
    Models I'm considering are:
    http://www.necdisplay.com/p/desktop-monitors/pa241w-bk
    http://www.necdisplay.com/p/desktop-monitors/pa242w-bk
    http://www.necdisplay.com/p/desktop-monitors/pa271w-bk
These monitors are great for stills, as they cam emulate paper types well, but do I need a more "vibrant" monitor for video? Just worried that my video will look a bit off on these monitors, as it's such a different medium?
If they aren't suitable, what brand/models are considered good? (Professional level).
    Cheers,
                 Ben

Hey Fuzzy, sorry about the format of this reply. Not sure to quote on here the way you did. Your points are addressed numerically.
    1. I haven't seen the user manuals, but using http://www.necdisplay.com/p/desktop-monitors/pa271w-bk for example, under color gamut, there's no mention of Rec709. Compare that to: http://www.eizo.com.au/products/coloredge/cg276/index.html#tab02, under preset modes. Not to mention this entire page: http://www.eizo.com/global/solutions/graphics/video_editing_and_post_production.html.
Just seems like NEC isn't playing up their video editng credentials, and I wonder why?
If you can link me to a user manual for any of the above models, which shows that it ships with Rec709 I'd appreciate it.
    2. I couldn't find that artcle, unless you mean: http://www.videomaker.com/article/15133-nec-multisync-pa271w-color-correct-lcd-display-rev iew. In any case, I meant NEC's marketing.
    This page has nothing: http://www.necdisplay.com/p/desktop-monitors/pa271w-bk
The incedibly detailed marketing PDF here: http://www.nec-display-solutions.com/p/download/pr/File/cp/Products/LCD/Shared/Brochures/P DF-PASeries.pdf?fn=PASeries.pdf actually contains the phrase "A range of Professional Desktop Displays that are ideal for users in the Photography and Media, Architecture, Engineering, Industrial Design and Precision CAD fields. " (No mention of Video, although it is the first NEC document mentioning "Built in Rec-BT709")
You have to understand that for a comsumer such as myself, not spelling these things out is going to make me look for answers. Or go to a company that does spell it out.
    3. Got it, thanks.
    4. I think I get that. I'll read the article. But... do these NEC monitors comply?

  • Edit on second monitor

    Hi all
How can I click edit in main iPhoto window, and open photo up on a second monitor for editing,
At the moment I am dragging the photo across.

    Mike
There is no way to do this. If you click 'Edit in Main Window' then it will edit in the Main Window.

No, what you are referring to is called Target Display Mode, your 2007 is simply too old and does not support it. TDM is discussed in the follow FAQ.
