Monitoring Hyper-V

Hi all I was trying to get the below counters being monitor on SCOM 2012. Do I need the Perfmon to be
enabled on the Hyper-V host for SCOM 2012 to be able to monitor the counters below ?
I was reading somewhere where it's recommended to use System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) to
monitor Hyper-V performance. How different is it from SCOM ?
Counters:
Hyper-V HypervisorLogical Processor\% Total Run Time
Hyper-V HypervisorVirtual Processor\% Guest Run Time
\Memory\Available Mbytes
Hyper-V Dynamic Memory Balancer\Average Pressure

No. You does not need to enable Perform. It is strong recommend that you should download System Center 2012 Management Pack for Windows Server Hyper-V 2012 for monitoring HYper-V.
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=36438
SCOM 2012 is a monitoring tool which has full set of feature on monitoring Hyer-V machine. However, SCVMM is mainly VMM  managment tool which has limit monitoring feature.

  • Monitoring Hyper-V 2012 R2 - Performance Data/Graphs Equivalent to XenCenter/vSphere Client

    Hello,
We've just moved away from Xenserver (hooray!) to Hyper-v 2012 R2, but I must admit the best thing about xenserver was xencenter. The ability to see the real time performance of a VM and see its network utlisation/CPU/Memory was very very useful. Also the
    same for VMWare vsphere client.
Although Hyper-V 2012 R2 is a lot better than xenserver the realtime monitoring of VM's is awful!
We have SCVMM but that doesn't give you much either, only average CPU data..and only when it decides it will show the graph!
I've tried a few free tools, VMTurbo, Solarwinds VM Monitor (free - which doesn't support 2012 R2) plus some others...but none give us what we want.
I've seen all these other posts about monitoring reports etc which are all good and well but when you need real-time data how are people getting this? We don't want OM as we cannot afford it nor do we want the excess of managing it (not even sure if this
would give us what we want).
Can anyone give me ideas of what they are using for this or what products, I feel MS have messed up a bit here, if they had these features in Hyper-v Manager/Failover Cluster Manager then it would be on a par with VMWare for sure.
    Many thanks
    Matt

    Update:
I've got a trail license of SCOM and installed it and connected to SCVMM (eventually...what a pain having to install extra packages etc!! good stuff MS! You'd think as SCVMM is part of the System Center family it would be easy to connect to SCOM)
I also got the free version of VeamOne as suggested by Leonardo.
SCOM is too complicated and requires far too much configuration just to get simple monitoring from Hyper-V and I really can't believe you need all this extra software just to get performance graphs from Hyper-V/VM's. Really don't want to install extra agents
on the hosts etc goes against Hyper-V best practice about keeping the servers light. Plus even trying to get simple data out of SCOM is tiresome.
VeamOne on the other hand...for a free product does exactly what SCVMM 'should' be doing.
Plus very useful extra info/alert that SCVMM doesn't even show up which I wasn't aware of, SCOM probably would show these alerts after you've spent days and days trying to figure out how to configure it and reading loads of articles.
So unless there is some hidden gem in SCVMM then it needs to be improved greatly on the monitoring side to fully compare with VMWare I believe as the idea of having to setup/configure SCOM just for monitoring is ridiculous.
I'm going to stick with VeamOne for now as its simple, gives me the info I require.

However, they are for window server 2008. Is there any more recent article of the same topic for window server 2012 and 2012 R2 Hyper-V ? Apart from this, is there any MS article which describe the suggested alert threshold for these performance
    counters ? Thanks in advance.

All of the guidance from TonyV that you found still applies.  And is still very relevant.
And MSFT has never given guidance in regards to any performance counters that I can ever recall.

  • How to get the maximum bandwidth/MaxSpeed/Capacity of a Hyper-V virtual-switch?

We are trying to monitor Hyper-V environment (Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 2012) using WMI, and have a very specific question Hyper-V virtual-switch.
We have referred the below mentioned classes and their properties.
    1. Win32_NetworkAdapter (namespace:root\cimv2, property:Speed)
    2. Msvm_InternalEthernetPort (namespace:Root\virtualization\v2, property: Speed and Maxspeed)
    3. Msvm_EthernetSwitchBandwidthData (namespace:Root\virtualization\v2, property:Capacity and Reservation)
All of the above classes and their properties returns 10000000000 (10 GBps) as MaxSpeed, which is NOT correct (as we know that our network connection is of 1 GBps)
Here is our question: How to get the maximum bandwidth/MaxSpeed/Capacity of a Hyper-V virtual-switch?

Until MSFT makes a change to increase the max speed of the virtual switch (and the resulting virtual ports) it will be 10 Gbps.
It has been this way since the original introduction in 2008.
What you are looking for is the most limiting segment in the path.  The virtual switch does not assume the properties of the most limiting segment.  Since the physical side could be a team, it could be a single NIC.
Your management layer must interpret the most limiting segment.
If you have not already been here:

  • Monitoring template for hosts and listeners

I've created a monitoring template through "setup -> monitoring template -> create". Under the "policies" tab I am unable to locate some policies for hosts and listeners such as "Listener.ora Permission" and "Open Ports". However, I can see (under policy rules library) that those policies are applied to all targets by default. How do I add those policies into my monitor template?
I am using 10.2.0.4 OEM grid control repository and agents on Sun Solaris 10.
    Thx.

  • Hyper-V Performance Chart & resources provisioning

Hi all, currently I just started to provide more support for Hyper-V server and all this while I been working at the data centre which uses VMware visualization.
For our Hyper-V, we are using two HP physical host and while working with the Hyper-V administrator I was told the following-> The HP Hyper-V is able to only support 4 VMs with 2 core each and would need to buy additional server if we go beyond 4 VM machines.
I'm not too sure how Hyper-V visualization is different from VMware but I think what I heard is very wrong.
I'm also curious is that on VMware I could see the amount of CPU & RAM the ESX Host is using but I don't see it on Hyper-V Manager unless using the Task Manager->Performance monitor is the only way.

    Hi,
Do you want to figure out, how do I know if my machine is overloaded? How can I figure out what resources were used so I know what to bill?
In order to answer this question you have understand a little of the Hyper-V architecture. Hyper-V has three main components – the virtstack, devices, and hypervisor. Windows
Server 2008 is what boots the system and launches the virtstack and hypervisor. The virtstack responsible for handling emulated devices, managing VM’s, servicing I/O, and more. The hypervisor is responsible for scheduling Virtual Processors, managing interrupts,
servicing timers, and controlling other chip level functions. It does not understand devices or I/O (ie there are no hypervisor drivers). The devices are part of the root and are also installed in guests as part of the Integration Services.

  • Hyper-V Virtual Storage Device - Read and Write Operations/Sec

    Hi,
    Everything is Windows 2012 R2.
SCOM does not gather any data for the following performance counters:
    Hyper-V Virtual Storage Device - Write Operations/Sec
    Hyper-V Virtual Storage Device - Read Operations/Sec
    Hyper-V Management Pack Extensions 2012 / 2012 R2 are imported.
If I add the counters in PerfMon, it works.
Any idea why? I've tried in several environments, DEV, QA and PROD, but it does not work anywhere.
    Thanks!

  • Limitations of SCOM 2012 Singel server environment

    Hi All,
We are monitoring Hyper-v(25) and Lync server in SCOM 2012, Lync servers(12) are deployed in different domain and monitoring via GW.  Rest of the components like Management server, DB, DW and SSRS are hosted in a single server.
Currently we are monitoring around 38 agents in our environment, I just want to know what is the limitation of agent count?
As per MS recommedation, we can monitor maximum 3000 agents per Management server. But for the below configuration , how many agents we can monitor?
    Server Hardware Configuration is below..
    Intel Xenon(R) CPU
24 GB RAM & 20 GB Paging file
Note - Currently Server is consuming 80% of physical memory.
    Thanks in advance.

As you have MS, OpsDB, OpsDWH, SSRS - all in one Server, your memory consumption is higher, for monitoring 38 agents you can go with
0-500 agents configuration which can obtained by sizing helper tool for SCOM
(Total: 2) (1) management server managing up to 500 agents, plus (1) management server for HA, managing up to 5 SDK users total

  • CPU Wait time per dispatch on a Server 2012 R2 Core.

I have a Hyper-V Cluster of 9 Server 2012 R2 core Hosts. I need to measure the CPU wait time, but when I use the remote performance counter a lot of the counters for Hyper-V is missing. How do I monitor this wait time?

    Hi Mikroben,
Based on my test , after installing hyper-v role on "Client" then we can see these counters  and use it for managing hyper-v server remotely .
Also , please use corresponding "Client" OS to monitor hyper-v server as Brian mentioned .

  • System Center 2012 R2 Requirements

    Hi guys,
Currently I wish to use System Center 2012 R2 - Operations Manager Server to monitor my Hyper-V hosts (8 Physical Machines) and guests (50 Virtual Machines).
Would also like to use System Center 2012 R2 - ConfigMgr to manage about 500 computers.
Which Server 2012 edition and System Center 2012 R2 edition should I use?
    Thanks guys!!

    Hi,
To monitor Hyper-v and VMs, we should import Hyper-v management pack.
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=36438
This management pack is for Hyper-v 2012, it provides the following functionality:
    • Management of critical Hyper-V services that affect virtual machines and host server functionality
    • Management of host server logical disks that affect virtual machine health
    • Full representation of virtualization in a single Hyper-V host server, including virtual networks, and virtual machines
    • Monitoring of virtual machine hardware components that affect availability
In addition, here is a smilar thread, please go through it:

  • RAM and Harddisk

    hi,
i want to update my MacbookPro 15´and wanted to go shure that the following hardware can be used..
    2048MB SO-DIMM DDR2 Corsair ValueSelect PC667 CL5
i thought only 1024 MB can be used.. if it is so can i use:
    1024MB SO-DIMM DDR2RAM Corsair Value Select PC667
    for the Harddisk:
    250GB 2,5" WD Scorpio WD2500BEVS SATA 5400rpm 8MB
    or is thisone better:
    250GB 2,5" Samsung SpinPoint M5S HM250JI SATA 5400
    Philipp

    Neither will give you 'utilization'
You need to look at the Performance classes.
    This covers where to look:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/tvoellm/archive/2009/04/23/monitoring-hyper-v-performance.aspx though it does not give you the WMI classes, it does tell you that it is in the performance counter area.

  • When I install the Hyper V Feature set (Win 8.1) - I lose my DVI connected monitors.

I have decided to switch over from VMWare Player to Hyper V for my VMs, however I am running into a deal breaker type issue.
After I install the Hyper V  features (via Programs and features) I get prompted for a restart while the system installs the feature set.
When I finally get booted back up I am no longer able to detect my two monitors that are connected via DVI.
I have a Lenovo T430 and all the System drivers and Windows updates are current. VGA still works, but I only have one VGA port and need two.
    Troubleshooting so far:
    Phyiscal Layer:
I tried new cables, new docking station, different monitors.
I removed the Hyper V feature set and regained my use of the DVI monitors.
I don't really know where to begin troubleshooting after that. I am not that familiar with hypervisors. I need access my lab environment. Please help!
Any ideas on steps to troubleshoot with would be greatly appreciated!

    >>After I install the Hyper V  features (via Programs and features) I get prompted for a restart while the system installs the feature set.
    >>When I finally get booted back up I am no longer able to detect my two monitors that are connected via DVI.
Do you mean all of these ports can work well at a time  without enabling Hyper-v ?
I checked the laptop "T430" ,it has two video card .
Please try to disable the integrated one for test .

But I am getting this alert from SCOM and SCOM has no information about the alert for me to find out what to do - thought that was the point of SCOM to let you know of problems and how to resolve them. :)
The alert is coming from the Error Count Monitor that is part of the Hyper-V Management Pack Extensions (v 4.0.0.0)
I have tried looking in the Event Logs on the Host and there doesn't seem to be any storage related errors there. I am trying to establish if this is a false positive, why it is happening and if it is safe to override and ignore.
There is nothing on the Product Knowledge tab and nothing on the Alert Context other than what I have already mentioned (see below).

  • Monitor bandwidth utilization for Hyper-V's Virtual Machines

    Hi,
I'm wondering, if SCOM is capable to monitor incoming & outgoing traffic (current and total over time) of VMs in Hyper-V?
Tried to search about it, and found only 3rd party tools or the monitoring is only available for Router, not VMs.
    Thanks.

    Hi Andre,
Also you can use performance monitor to monitor the VM's bandwidth through counter "Bytes Received/sec" and "Bytes Sent/sec" under Hyper-v virtual network adapter :
