Monitoring OMS

Apologies if this is a silly question,but.....
I get alerts from OEM when any agents are down, but get no alerts or notification if the OMS is down and alerts are missed as they don't get issued until OMS has been restarted.
What checks have other folks put in place to ensure OMS is up, or does everyone configure multiple OMSs to ensure HA and I'm the only person using one?!

If you don't
receive many alerts it could be down for days without
anyone noticing and then you could have a pile of
alerts waiting for you when it comes back up and a
whole heap of trouble from your boss because there
was a problem and OEM didn't warn you whilst there
was still time to prevent it! Neil
Lets take the most likely example (while outside of EM). You get to the office in the morning, the emails for nightly backups has not shown up in your mail box or if you are the more techy guy, you have not received any notification on your pager or ipaq while on the beach within 8 working hours. What do you do?
I know the above is just an example, but to be honest, unless EM is not used in an organisation and there are no notifications set, the odds of the OMS down for up to 24 hours without anyone noticing in an environment is very low.

Error while starting OMS during installation of Enterprise Manager12c

Hello Guys,
I am trying to install Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c(64bit) on OEL5.2(64bit), but after successfully going through all
the per-requisites of the installation; the installation fails at 89% "Start Oracle Management Service" phase and
at "Agent Configuration Assistant" phase.
Error is "Error Starting server EMGC_OMS1: weblogic.nodemanager.NMException: Exception while starting server 'EMGC_OMS1'"
Tried to resolve the certificate issue in the log following the MOS [ID 1320530.1] - Ignoring the trusted CA certificate warnings when connecting to Node Manager using WLST nmConnect() but the command keytool failed with java exception.
I am using two VMs for the setup:-

Hi Akanksha,
Did more digging abt the issue and finally got the OMS server to actually start even after the certificate issue but after that when the script tries to access login page it gets a 404 error and stops the OMS server.
I guess raising an SR is my only way out.....

Oracle database monitored using SNMP

Hi guys,
I have a problem that I can't seem to find the answer too...I tried google-ing, but found only pieces, and can't seem to figure out the big picture...So here goes:
I am working with my team on a Data Warehouse project, and the entire app is written in PL/SQL and SQL code, running in an Oracle DB. Now, the PO wants to have SNMP monitoring, and in the last few days I looked into how can I achieve this (please note that I have little experience with Oracle, know about SNMP for like 2 days...and I am not sure even if I am posting in the right forum)...
So after searching online, for an Agent for Oracle i found this website : http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/oem/grid-control/downloads/agentsoft-090381.html ..and I think this is what i need....(can anyone confirm this???)
Anyway after downloading, and reading the instructions I choose to try the so called *2. Silent installation of the agent* and below are the instructions...
For silent installation using the extracted agent download zip file, copy the <UNZIPDIR>\windows_x64\response\additional_agent.rsp file to a location on the local machine and modify the Value Unspecified entries accordingly. Invoke the setup.exe by executing:
+<UNZIP_DIR>\windows_x64\agent\setup.exe -silent -responseFile <location>\additional_agent.rsp+
So then I started editing the file additional_agent.rsp and everything was going well until I reached the following part:

I have no idea what to put in the OMS_HOST and OMS_PORT fields...What do they refer to?

So I talked more with the PO...and the thing is our product is just a small part of a much bigger product...he said : *"we do not need the Oracle Enterprise Manager for monitoring; we are going to use a third-party SNMP management software... The Oracle SNMP agent will report to a third-party SNMP management software (e.g. Nagios or similar). "*
My questions are :
Can you install the Oracle Management Service without the Oracle Enterprise Manager? ...if not then :
Can you run the Oracle Enterprise Manager with Oracle Standard Edition?
I will search more on google for answers for these questions...and if I find them i'll post them here...Or maybe someone if faster and knows the answers..so he will post them :)

How to set-up new user for 9i OEm and OMS

Apologies since this is a 10g grid control forum but I wasn't sure where to post these questions..
I am trying to give a DBA access to our 9i OEM Repository so he can add his servers and databases for monitoring. I know he will need 'SELECT ANY DICTIONARY' and that I will need to create his user id in the Repo DB with DBA authority. Are there any other roles or privileges that he will need?
Will I also need to place an agent on each server for the 9i OEM/OMS to discover it? Will the listenere.ora need to have the OEM Repository entries added?
I searched the OEM Admin Guide but only found info on using the OEM Security Manager which I am not able to access.

Hang on, you have a 9i OEM OMS setup and you want to give x access to this so x can add targets onto the oms?
If I've understood you correctly, you do not need to create a database account on the repository. You need to create a user on the OEM9i Console (probably a super admin to add targets is required) for x.
A 9i or 8i agent is required for the OEM9i OMS to discover the target server and associated databases.
9i and 8i agents require an entry in the listener.ora on the target server. You do not need an entry where you OEM9i OMS is.

OEM 10.2.0.5 Errors Monitoring Oracle 11g on RHEL 5.3 64-bit

I am trying to setup a grid control box to monitor two 11gR1 databases on a RAC cluster. We have Oracle CRS for the clustering software and we are using OEM GC 10.2.0.5. I have cloned 10.2.0.5 agents from the OMS install and the hosts show up in OEM.
The listener shows as down in the EM console. The database shows down too with "Agent Connection to Instance" failed with ORA-12545. Connect failed because target host or object does not exist (DBD ERROR: OCIServerAttach).
My emagemt_perl.trc has the following:

I discovered the targets with the agent, when it was added to EM. I also set the dbsnmp password but I am still getting the error.

Best Practice for monitoring database targets configured for Data Guard

We are in the process of migrating our DB targets to 12c Cloud Control.
In our current 10g environment the Primary Targets are monitored and administered by OEM GC A, and the Standby Targets are monitored by OEM GC B. Originally, I believe this was because of proximity and network speed, and over time it evolved to a Primary/Standby separation. One of the greatest challenges in this configuration is keeping OEM jobs in sync on both sides (in case of switchover/failover).
For our new OEM CC environment we are setting up CC A and CC B. However, I would like to determine if it would be smarter to monitor all DB targets (Primary and Standby) from the same CC console. In other words, monitor and administer DB Primary and Standby from the same OEM CC Console. I am trying to determine the best practice. I am not sure if administering a swichover from Cloud Control from Primary to Standby requires that both targets are monitored in the same environment or not.
I am interested in feedback. I am also interested in finding good reference materials (I have been looking at Oracle documentation and other documents online). Thanks for your input and thoughts. I am deliberately trying to keep this as concise as possible.

OMS is a tool it is not need to monitor your primary and standby what is what I meant by the comment.
The reason you need the same OMS to monitor both the primary and the standby is in the Data Guard administration screen it will show both targets. You also will have the option of doing switch-overs and fail-overs as well as convert the primary or standby. One of the options is also to move all the jobs that are scheduled with primary over to the standby during a switch-over or fail-over.
There is no document that states that you need to have all targets on one OMS but that is the best method for the reason of having OMS. OMS is a tool to have all targets in a central repository. If you start have different OMS server and OMS repository you will need to log into separate OMS to administrator the targets.

How to install the windows7 agent and monitor the same machine

Hi ,
I have installed OMS on Oracle Linux 5.7-64 bit machine. Now I am able monitor the OIM which is installed on Linux. I have some of oracle applications (domains) on windows7 machine. I want monitor the same. On em, agent deployment page I am not able to see the windows agents.
Can you please guide me how to install the agent on windows and monitor the same?

If you just need to install some agents on Windows the best (imho) option is not to use the push option because getting Cygwin to run can take hours (if at all).

Sometimes the –silent mentioned in step 4b needs not to be put as second argument but as last argument.

we have these patches 7012242,7031906,5961654,5632264 installed on the agent home.
I have also disabled the instance health metrics for all the 10g target db on this host.
Anybody has any idea how to resolve this . This is becoming quite annoying .

Just to comfort you, and yes we do monitor 10.2.0.3 instances. This comes from the emagent.trc on one of many rdbms server. The same is not found on other servers running 10.2.0.3 instances. The time coincide with an agent crash on this server. Keeping an eye on this thread while trying to find out what it is related to.

Problem in the monitoring with 12c

Hi All,
I deployed the agent into two machines with OAS.
A host level if sample data monitoring (CPU, network ...) but the forms or http or remains in a state pending .
I review the agent status and is correct

How to monitor oem itself ?

my question derived from a bad experience: my company have all monitoring things configured through Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control. Yesterday oem's repository crashed and I have not received any alarm. Today, viewing no alarms, I became sospicious... well, the repository was down and so also the monitoring was down too.
Now my question is: are there some best practices to monitor Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control itself?

by using shell scripts.Yes indeed its good to have a backup.
And a second OMS is also a good plan, install a second agent on the first OMS, point it to the new OMS, and versa-vice as well. Unless both OMS hosts are using the same SAN for storing the ORACLE_HOMEs if one goes offline you'll know about it ;)

Multiple OMAs on same OMS Host

Hi -
I have not tried this but wanted to get some input if i can do it etall. I have two different OMS servers. I'm planning to install additional agent on each OMS and monitor other OMS---meaning...
OMS1 - has its own agent OMA1
OMS2 - has its own agent OMA2.
Now i want to install additional OMA on OMS1 that is target of OMS2 and install additional OMA on OMS2 that is the target for OMS1
I want to do this so OMS1 agent is monitored by OMS2 and vice versa..for addtional monitoring.
Can this be done or will there be any conflict between the two OMAs being on the same OMS?

What you are asking about is standard procedure whenever there are multiple OMS hosts.
Just make sure you come up with a naming convention for the OMA homes so you know which is which.

Oracle Widgets - "Service Level & Monitoring" 8869802

Hi There
I would like to query if anyone has used Service Level & Monitoring Widget with 11.1 OMS Version on AIX ? Because when i looked at downloading a prerequisite patch 8869802 , it says 10.2.0.5 release. Has someone got any issues deploying this patch in 11.1 ?

Monitor database in restrict mode

hello everybody,
is there a way to see session activity information in Top Activity window when database is in restricted mode? Monitored database, OMS and agent are all 10.2.0.3.
So far I have tried to grant restricted session to dbsnmp but it didn't help.

I have tried to connect as sysdba to database but it shows no data. I also reconfigured the database target properties to be monitored through sys (as sysdba) but didn't work either.

Grid Control Configure Monitor Username

Hi,
I dropped the standby and recreated it. Now i'm trying to add this to the OMS for monitoring. Host is success but when i try to add the standby database to OMS, the Monitor Username parameter is defaulting to dbsnmp and not allowing me change to sys so the sysdba can monitor the standby. How to change the deafult username parameter from 'dbsnmp' to 'sys'? I even tried to edit the targets.xml file on agent but everythin defaults when the agent is recycled? I can't give the 'dbsnmp' sysdba privileges since the database is in standby mode-mounted only.

To monitor a target as sysdba do this:
Go to targets and then select the databases tab and select your database (just put the green dot next to it, don't click on the database name link). At the the top/bottom of the targets page, hit the configure button.
In this page, hit the drop down box first and select 'AS SYSDBA'
Now you can edit the username.

How to get current local file system volume sizes information from OMS?

I know I can get this information from the table SYSMAN.MGMT$STORAGE_REPORT_LOCALFS.
But info stored in this table is not always up to date, but when going to the page em/console/monitoring/hostFilesystemOverview$target=xxxhostnamexxx$type=host$pageType=current$ctxType=Hosts the information is current.
I have accessed mentioned table in apex, from outside OMS, I would like to have current information instead of old.
How to do that?

I think that there is nothing wrong with this table, just that the data is not collected every 5 minutes or so, only on a daily basis.
But as ca107207 said - when you go to the page, showing information about the files system, from the host home page - the data is up to date to the current second.
Therefore I think that OMS ask agent to send this value, but it is then not stored anywhere.
My question would be how to ask agent from outside OMS to get this information?
I have done a little reverse engineering on OMS packages and there should be a way to get this, using some procedures, pl/sql code with generating some cursors etc.
I'm not that good in pl/sql to create something like that, it would take too much time for me. I think that it can't be done without OMS at all, I just have another database with apex on the same host and apex display some information for other users about the file systems etc. It would be nice to have information about file system usage current.
