Monitoring On VMware

Hello,
Could someone tell me if there are any restrictions for monitoring VMWare
virtual servers. I have noticed that once I have deployed the agent on
the virtual servers I do not get the Summary view.

Hi!
Excellent info! But what about v5.2?
We migrated from 4.2 to 5.2 (for which the license L-CSACS-52VMUP-K9 was bought), but the Advanced Monitoring and Reporting feature is still in EVAL mode.
Is this feature already included in v5.2? or Do we need to buy a license?
Thanks for your help!
Best regards, Martin.

  • System monitoring plugin for Vmware ESX server..

i have a OEM grid control 10.2.0.5 with management plugin for Vmware ESX server (Management Plug-in: vmware_esx_server, Version 1.1.3.1.0) added.
I later added another server agent for management/monitoring of VMware ESX server.
the agent state is UP and under Monitored targets for the agent I am now trying to add the VMware ESX server
Once on the page, here I enter the details <Hostname / Usrname:Pwd / Protocol:HTTPS / Keystore> and click on Test Connection and recieve a Warning :
Failed to contact the target to be added. Following errors were received while testing the connection to the target. Update the properties accordingly, try Test Connection for testing the properties before saving.
TestVersion - caught com.vmware.vim.InvalidLogin: ; nested exception is: javax.net.ssl.SSLException: java.lang.RuntimeException: Unexpected error: java.security.InvalidAlgorithmParameterException: the trustAnchors parameter must be non-empty Aug 26, 2009 9:28:04 AM org.apache.axis.utils.JavaUtils isAttachmentSupported WARNING: Unable to find required classes (javax.activation.DataHandler and javax.mail.internet.MimeMultipart). Attachment support is disabled.
If I go ahead and click OK it adds the Target(Vmware esx server) to the agent and displays message :
"Target ESXVS (VMware ESX Server) has been added."
THE problem starts here.. the metrics collection doesnt happen for the target and I get Metric collection errors.
I have tried checking in diff versions of management plugins as well as tried adding the target to the Grid control's agent//
    Pls help..

Is the location that you specified for the keystore file somewhere that the agent can read from (either a drive local to where the agent is installed or a network drive that the agent has access to)? Is the keystore file one that was generated for that specific ESX Server from its rui.crt file? Each ESX Server has a different rui.crt file that you use to create the keystore file.
You won't be able to collect metrics if the SSL connectivity isn't set up correctly.

  • Solaris 10 virtual machine for VMware

I've tried the "Solaris 10 OS, AMD x64 Platform - Solaris Enterprise System Virtual Machine for VMware (Solaris 10 11/06) 3.0". I've d/l the virtual appliance for vmware one can find from there : http://developers.sun.com/solaris/downloads/solaris_apps/index.jsp#vmware
    I encountered 2 problems :
The first was the network (netcard) wasn't recognised at all. It's strange because the settings should be the same for every vmware virtual machines. It may be because I'm running the latest version from vmware (10.0.2). The default option was NAT, and I tried the others as well. All other systems I'm using with vmware are working correctly, including the opensolaris "Nexenta".
The second one was with the screen resolution, it was excessively huge, around 2800 x 2000. I couldn't change it in the gnome desktop (the option had no effect). I managed to change it by altering the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. The same was for the keyboard settings, I couldn't switch to azerty (french) keyboard. I had to change it in xorg.conf file.

im new to vmware too, but just wan to share my experience with you.
5.5.1 vmware workstation with vmtool installed.
    - my NIC still define as pcn0, encountered packet drop network issue
    - dtlogin doesn't work properly with my screen resulation, mouse work fine without pressing ctrl+alt key to get out from vmware
6.0 vmware workstation with vmtool installed.
    - no more packet drop issue, especially when i ssh from pc to vmware.
    - gdm fit to screen, GUI work fine.
    - my shared folder working now, mount as /hgfs.

  • Different CPU utilization on ESX VMware servers of Netweaver Portal

    Hello,
we are running an Enterprise Portal NW 7.0, SPS20. The application servers are running on 6 ESX VMware servers.
Although all application servers have almost the same amount of user sessions and the same processes on all servers,
always one of the servers have more than the double amount of CPU utilization than all other servers !
We found out, that this phänomen appears, as soon as one of the VM servers is running on a different physical hardware.
As soon as all servers are running on the same physical hardware, the problem does not exist.
Does anyone have experiences with the topic (Portal-)application servers on ESX VMware and different CPU utilization ?
    Best regards,
    Matthias

    Hi Matthias,
Here is some information that may help you analyze the situation further:

  • VMWare Player 5.0 doesn't start

I have updated VMWare to version 5.0 and since then I cannot make it work. I have followed the instructions in the wiki. The symlinks are created, the kernel modules patched and built, vmware service is started, but when I start the graphical interface and launch a virtual machine, the graphical interface exits and no virtual machine pops up
I tried reinstalling, and now each time I try to install it, it doesn't ask me where to put the system service scripts, and I always get the same results . If I try to start the VM again, I get "The virtual machine is busy" errors until I reboot the entire system.
    Any suggestions?

did you ever got it to run, I am on the same scenario? when I run it on terminal i get this as soon I try to start a windows machine on the vmplayer console.

  • [SOLVED] Trouble building VMware modules

    Hello there,
I have VMware Player installed, but since last kernel update from 2.6.32 to .33 all modules have to be rebuilt. The thing is that when I start the app I get a message about it not finding the kernel headers. I have kernel26-headers installed, and the headers are actually under /usr/src/2.6.33-ARCH/include, but vmware won't find them.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

Ok, VMware Player 3.0.1 actually finds the headers and builds its moudles, so now /etc/rc.d/vmware start works ok. But now vmplayer crashes without any errors when I open it. Launching it from the cli drops this output:
    $ vmplayer

And then the window just dissappears. Also:

  • SCOM Performance/Availability metrics on VMWare guests - query

    Hi,
I'm monitoring our VMWare server infrastructure with SCOM 2012.  I'm looking for a bit of clarification Re the metrics which SCOM produces to those that are provided by vCenter.
Basically this has stemmed from seeing some alerts such as Available megabytes of Memory monitor which has alerted due to SCOM reporting the agent has < 100MB available yet the vCentre memory reports show guest has well above the threshold available and
therefore shouldnt have alerted.  So when discussing with our server team who would rely on the vCenter metrics, its causing them to lose faith in any metrics/alerts which SCOM is gathering. - the various CPU/Memory performance graphs from SCOM are not
    consistent with the vCenter ones.
Can anyone advise if the SCOM metrics are (more) reliable than the native vCenter ones as indicators of health and provide the evidence for arguing the case either way.
Any help much appreciated - and Merry Christmas :-)

    Hi,
I think you need to check the memory usage on the guest manually and compare the result. In the productive environment, please test, compare and then decide which one is more reliable and suitable in your environment.

I'm having the same problem as of today. This indeed seems related to HAL and not what was mentioned @ the other thread.
Vmware exits with the same error (seems the same to me):

Basically something broke HAL and it now fails to start on a reboot. When run manually all sorts of errors crop up:

  • VMware keeps Rebuilding Kernel Modules [Solved]

Hi, and thanks. After the last kernel upgrade everytime I start vmware player the first instance to run will rebuild the kernel modules and there is a warning icon next to the "Blocking File System" entry in the build list. I am using the latest kernel 3.4.2.2-Arch, my vmware player is version 4.0.2 build-591240. It runs fine after it rebuilds but the warning icon has me concerned. Does anyone know what this is? Do I have to move up a vmware version?
thanks in advance for your help.

If anyone is interested, here is the complete console output when I run the player.

  • Installing Monitor on OES2 - requirements/suggestions

The GW system we have consists of approximately 23 PO and 30 domains, 1 GWIA, three GWINTER, and two webaccess servers.
I was thinking of maybe running the Monitor in vmware ESX with 512 MB RAM and maybe 15 GB drive space.
    1) Is that sufficient given our system size?
Also, can it be installed onto the same OES2 server that also runs a WebAccess web server and gateway? I originally tried this in version 7 and it wouldn't install, but nobody replied to my post and I was too lazy to open an SR.
    We're all at 8.0.1 now.
Or should I just have Monitor on its own machine? the vmware that has the webaccess is only used by 8 people (it's kinda like a test webaccess to be honest).

Well, that's assuming you really want to run the Monitor "Application",
which I never do any longer. I just run GW Monitor Agent and point my
browser to it's port (default of 8200) and never bother with the
    Application.
Truly, the only benefit the Application would have would be accessing it
from outside of the network on the internet, and now that even our hand-held
devices have good VPN capabilities, it doesn't seem a high priority for most
of my customers to bother with the Monitor Application. Novell has also
voiced an intention to not put a lot of engineering time into the
Application, and instead build the Web interface directly on the Agent to
the point where the application is mostly unnecessary. I don't know really
right now of anything the Application can do that can't be done without it.

Oh, I guess that's good to know. I'll play with just the Monitor agent then and see what it looks like.

  • Installing Gnome 3 broke vmware

Today I installed Gnome 3 and right after that I'm unable to launch vmware workstation.
I'm using 2.6.38-ARCH on a 64bit intel with nvidia 270.30-4 drivers. Is anyone else having the same problem?

  • Application start script when failover

    Dear Gurus,
When VMware HA vm1 fails over to vm2, we want to start application automatically, but our VMware engineer tells me the only way is to add the start script into booting script. But I do not want to start the application every time when I restart this vm.
My understanding there should be a tag to distinguish failover and normal startup/stop, or there should be a exist for application start/stop,  so we can decide when to use the application start/stop script.
Or 3rd party HA software is mandatory for this situation?
    thx in advance.

With respect to Application, there are 2 options VMware currently offers.
    1. Enable Application monitoring : To enable Application Monitoring, you must first obtain the appropriate SDK (or be using an application that supports VMware Application Monitoring) and use it to set up customized heartbeats for the applications you want to monitor. After you have done this, Application Monitoring works much the same way that VM Monitoring does. If the heartbeats for an application are not received for a specified time, its virtual machine is restarted. Here Application itself will not be restarted but VM (when Application that you configured for monitoring)
    Refer:VMware vSphere 5.1
    2. vSphere App HA: This is another product (Plugin to web client): Here you can configure your Application. Once configured, when Application fails, application will be restarted for set number of times, if it is not successful, VM itself be restarted.

  • VMware Fusion question - Multiple Monitors

I apologize if this is in the wrong area, but I am desperate for some help. I have also posted this same question in the VMware communities but I have not had any luck with anyone responding yet.
It seems that I am having an issue with my virtual machine (windows XP) viewing in full screen or unity across my multiple monitor setup on my Mac Pro. Every time I go to view in full screen or unity I get a VMware popup warning/error that reads:
The virtual machine "Windows XP Professional" is configured for a smaller display size than the one your Mac is currently using. VMware Fusion needs to shut down your virtual machine to enable support for your Mac's display size in Full Screen. Do you want to shut down this virtual machine now?
I have two options, one to shut down, or one to go into full screen. If I go into full screen, full screen works with the correct resolution and everything looks great except its only in the one monitor (not the multiple monitor). If I shut down and restart the virtual machine and try to go to full screen I get the same error.
The VMware tools have been installed and I did go to the view, use all displays in full screen opiton.
My current setup is a mac pro with 3 monitors using 2 NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT Video Cards.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

I found a link to a VMWare Knowledge Base entry about specifying video ram in Fusion 1. Maybe it is still true.
