Monitoring routers

I have some network monitoring software to use at work, Do I need to install or set up anything on my routers etc so I can monitor them, i.e how to I configure snmp on the device, what do the traps do ? and how and where do I install the MIBS ?
thanks a million

What "snmp server" are you using? If it is capable of monitoring bandwidth utliization, you may or may not have to load MIBs on it - there are both generic MIBs and Cisco-specific ones that provide varying degrees of fucntionality.
A general purpose monitor such a SolarWinds can just be pointed to your target devices, given the snmp ro passwords and, assuming the devices have snmp enabled, will start monitoring and reporting the utilization.
If you have a more stripped down product like one of the open source distributions, you may need to do more work in setting it up, loading MIBs, creating target directories, etc.
Traps are only necessary if you want to alert an operator or process that the device itself is encountering a condition that needs to have operator or process attention - things like interface down or route flapping, etc.
Hope this helps. Please rate helpful posts.

  • CW LMS 2.6 - Can I monitor routers?

    Dear Support,
Sorry quick (hopefully) question, but need to check I don't need to purchase the RWAN products as well.
We have a HQ site with 6 switches and two 2621xm routers, and a datacentre site with 6 switches and two 2621xm routers. Can I monitor all these devices through LMS, even though the DC has several subnets and is the other side of the routers?
    thanks in advance.
    I always rate helpful posts.
    regards, Adrian

I think you should be able to monitor all of the devices as LMS 2.6 includes RME which keeps the inventory of all the devices, although certain functionalities will be restricted for management of remote devices.

I have a client using PRTG program to monitor Routers and ASA5520 Firewall, for Router are fine but ASA5520 only shown interface status, but not able to show VPN tunnel information whether the tunnel is up or down.
One of the Engineer there memtioned for monitoring the device’s parameters (Health/CPU/Status…… etc)  it require MIBS library that contains the OID of the devices and those MIBS to be imported into tool itself. where can I get these MIBS library?
Has anyone has encounter same issue before or similar, please advise!

  • Monitor Dell Powerconnect Switches/Routers using SCOM 2012

    Hello,
We are trying to find a way to monitor approximately 20-25 Dell Powerconnect switches/routers (models 5324,5424,5448,5548,6224,6024) through SCOM 2012.
Using SCOM network discovery we are able to get all Dell Powerconnect switches listed, but we are unable to get a network node dashboard, nor vicinity view 1 or 2 hops further. We are able to only see connected network printers and some serial/ethernet devices
    we have.
In addition, SCOM 2012 seems to be able to recognize the model of only Dell Powerconnect 5224 switches. We have found that on the SCOM management server the "C:\Program Files\System Center 2012\Operations Manager\Server\NetworkMonitoring\conf\discovery\oid2type_Dell.conf"
only lists Dell Powerconnect 5224 switches as well as several models from the 3000 series.
We have contacted Dell PRO support, but their reply was that there is no management pack for SCOM available for their networking devices.
Would it be recommended to use http://xsnmp.codeplex.com/ on SCOM 2012 to monitor those switches and get a network digram view or are there any plans to include those MIBs in a future CU or SP of SCOM 2012?

    Hi Alex
Network monitoring has changed from SCOM 2007 R2 to SCOM 2012 so this statement
"but if this works for SCOM 2007, it should apply to SCOM 2012"
is not accurate when it comes to network monitoring:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/momteam/archive/2011/10/24/migrating-operations-manager-2007-network-monitoring.aspx
Would it be recommended to use http://xsnmp.codeplex.com/ on SCOM 2012?
The codeplex solutions for SCOM 2007 R2 will not work on a new \ clean install of SCOM 2012 (if you upgrade from SCOM 2007 R2 they continue to work as legacy devices but you can't add more monitoring).
SCOM 2012 seems to be able to recognize the model of only Dell Powerconnect 5224 switches
What do you mean by recoginse? SCOM can discover network devices but there is an "approved" list that allows for extended monitoring:
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26831
You should still be able to discover and monitor other devices though:

  • Monitoring IP ISDN  status on main routers

    Dear all
I would need to test the ISDN (backup) connection of peripheral routers (Cisco) to their respective main routers on a regular basis. At present this is done manually. That is the operator gets on the peripheral router through its loopback IP and then pings the ISDN IP of the main router. Here are data of a real company as an example:
    Society: Zurigo
    Location: Foggia
    Router name: AITFG00EZA
    IP loopback: 172.23.239.164
    IP bri: 172.23.247.100
IP ISDN of main router: 172.23.247.65
So once the operator gets on the router AITFG00EZA, he pings 172.23.247.65 thereby verifying the good functioning of the whole backup connection.
I heard there's a UNIX script that could deal with that. But I also heard of network capacities of JAVA. I would imagine a java program that goes like this:
    1. Telnet peripheral router with user/pwd strings
    2. Ping main router specifying packet size and Time To Live
    3. Print results indicating connection as OK or NOT OK
20 Duke Dollars for the solution. I would be grateful for any help/suggestions/comments.
    Take care.

Do it with the Unix script. I'd imagine that some Perl programmer could probably do this with a single source code line (but you'd never be able to change or debug it! :^) ).
You could do this with Java, but you'd have to implement the telnet (trivial, but still some coding) and the ping (relatively trivial, but still some coding).
Unless you are just dying to figure out Java networking, go the easy route and use a scripted language that is designed for this type of thing.

  • On a Mac with two monitors, how do I get a new FF window to open on the second monitor? I can do this on a Windows XP box easily enough but on a Mac FF won't remember the position of a new window. Please help!

I proof websites for a living and workflow is everything. On my 26" main monitor I have FF running the job tracking web site. In this site, there are links to the sites I need to proof. I would like to be able to right click on a URL and select 'open in new window' and have that window open up on my second monitor.

Here's some more info about the router settings:
iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
You should be able to get into the setup of your router by typing the IP address into your browser.
Depending on your router security setup, you might need the MAC address of your iPad, to allow access to your network, if the so called MAC filtering is active.
You can also check the name of your home network if your click on the AirPort icon on your desktop of your MacBook.
And here's a Wi-Fi assistant to get you going: http://www.apple.com/support/ipad/assistant/wifi/

  • Is it possible to check if anyone has applied to monitor my web browsing history/cache/bookmarks as an employer on my home pc without my knowledge or consent?

I am using private windows to browse since someone seems to know what sites I've visited. I've done my best wrt blocking cookies and deleting history on exit, but some data in the "Library" exists.
Apparently my isp provider and employer can see my browsing history of a private browsing window.
I am currently self-employed but I volunteered for an organisation until October 2013. One of their members I worked closely with was stalking my email and browsing history without my knowledge.
Is it possible for this slimy bleep to have weasled their way into monitoring my web activity by claiming to be an employer?
Can I use a private browsing window safely?
I have a business to run, so I need my information, email, web activity to be kept confidential.
Any helpful advice will be gratefully received.

Your question is a bit confusing, and it seems that you don't quite understand who and what can view your internet activity:
    * Private browsing mode simply leaves no record of the sites you visit in your browser. There are so many other parts of the chain that can keep records. Example: Your computer could have tracking software (installed intentionally or maliciously), many routers have web logging, your Internet Service Provider can view the sites you visit, your employer if you are at work, the government has extensive tracking programs as well. Private browsing won't defeat these tracking techniques. It basically only prevents people who have physical access to your computer from looking in your history and seeing the sites you visited in PB mode.
    * Your employer can't just request to see the sites you visit when you are at home. The only reason your employer could see the sites you visit is it you take your computer to work and use your work network to access the internet (and the employer has enabled logging on their network hardware) or you have a work laptop and take it home and it has logging software installed on it. Many employers have policies against using work equipment for personal. But there is no way that your employer can call your home ISP and ask to view your internet history.
    * Your ISP keeps a record of the sites you access, but won't release that without a court order (or to the NSA....) so unless you have a court order or a snoopy ISP employee who has an axe to grind and is viewing your internet logs illegally you don't really have to worry about that.
    * It's possible you have malware on your computer that is tracking your internet history. [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]]

  • Help... my monitor is growing dimmer by the day

    Hi ya'll
So I have had a G3 dv se imac (550 mhg, 30gb hd, 250mb RAM) for about 5yrs and within the last month/month and a half the monitor has gradually dimmed itself to the point of, where now I can only see things with as much contrast as black on white word processing. This is a great computer...if nothing else it will suffice for homework and web research but I really need to figure out how to fix this.
Then like a total idiot...I've been looking for several weeks on Craigs list for a similar unit to replace mine in case its to far gone. So anyway, I finally find one for $100, comes with 2 printers, two routers, and a CD burner. It only has a 10gb hd, so I get on and order a great 100gb internal hd for $50...thinking even that is a great deal. I get the computer home, my brother installs the hd, office, adobe CS2...I get on it finally for the first time and, omg, the monitor appears to be at the same place that my totally dark other computer was about a month ago. I didn't realize it, or I guess didn't even expect to realize it, so I didn't look for it very carefully before now but crap dude! And I suppose to someone that doesn't know about it, it would go completely unnoticed for quite a while, especially with nothing to compare it too...but I know, in a matter of no time at all, it will be to dark to even use.
Does anybody have any ideas?...for both of them? I know I can get an external monitor and just use these as hd's but I don't want to do that, that's a waste and will cost more money. How much do you think it would cost to take them in and have them fixed at a repair shop? I've heard something about needing to update firmware... there's certainly been a bunch of posts about that anyhow. Frankly, I don't know much about that at all! I have also read a post that talked about resetting the PRAM? I don't know, it sounded really complicated! Maybe I'm in over my head!?!? Please help...I need something that works...I'm about a week and a half from the end of the quarter and I need something to use to finish my graphic design final. I'm in a wheel chair...otherwise, I'd just go to the lab at the college.
    Thanks, Kelly
iMac G3 400mhz, 384 MB SDRAM, Mac OS 10.3.9   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Installed 100Gb internal hard drive, using Photoshop CS2

    Hi
If the second iMac never had OS X installed then the firmware would be the first thing to look at. A dark screen is one of the symptoms. There's a good article here (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75430) Only thing is, you need to update the firmware from OS 9 and even then, you'll probably need an external monitor to see what's happening (Talk about a Catch 22). It's quite an easy process though.
As for resetting the PRAM, that'e easy too; but you practically need 3 hands to do it. You need to start the computer while holding down commandoption+pr. The easiest way is to get the keyboard as close to the power button as possible, hold down command, option and r with your left hand and hold down p with your right while powering on. After you hear the startup chime twice let go of the keys and let it start up.
Failing both those, the easiest thing may be to find a 2nd hand monitor and use that.
Hope this will be of some help

  • Operations Manager - KMS Idle Minutes Monitor Alerts - False Positives As Event ID 12290 Still Being Logged

    Hi all,
I am using System Center 2012 R2 Operations Manager with the Key Management Service Management Pack at version 6.0.7234.0, and I keep receiving the following alert in Operations Manager:
    "Idle Minutes Monitor Alert:
Key Management Service (KMS) inactivity exceeded threshold
    Knowledge:
    Summary:
The purpose of this rule is to alert system administrators to a possible KMS or network outage. This rule monitors the end-to-end operation of KMS activation. A notification event is created by KMS if no activation or renewal requests were logged by KMS
(activity event 12290) in the specified time interval. In addition to new activations, periodic renewal requests are expected to occur (default is 7 days). Whether or not this alert is serious depends on the number of machines in the KMS environment, how many
are actually connected, and the configured renewal interval.
    Causes:
Any failure or incorrect configuration of the KMS service, other Windows components, firewall, hardware, network or routers can trigger the Idle Minutes Alert. This alert can also result from normal behavior, since it is possible that not enough machines
attempted to activate or renew during the specified time interval.
    Resolutions:
The first step is to determine whether there really is a problem. Start with a known good KMS client and run (with elevated privileges) the script slmgr.vbs -ato . If the activation/renewal fails, it will report an error code. You can direct the client to
connect to a specific KMS machine by using the slmgr.vbs -skms option. The request event (12288) and response event (12289) in the Windows Application event log may provide additional information, including the identity of failing KMS machines. If there has
been a failure, check the following:
Software Licensing service (slsvc) is running.
Other KMS machine behavior is normal.
KMS firewall port is open (default is TCP 1688).
Attempt to connect to KMS using telnet to the KMS port(you won’t be able to do anything other than connect)
Use a network monitor (e.g. netmon) to capture and trace network problems.
There is one Idle Minutes Monitor that is used to monitor for activity. It may be desirable to adjust the time threshold, depending on expected KMS activity."
Despite what the alert says, there are activity events with ID 12290 being logged, but they are appearing under the 'Key Management Service' log instead of the general 'Application' log.  I know that my clients are activating with the server without
any problems as I have run slmgr.vbs -ato with success on a number of them, and none are stating that activation is required.  This issue was previously raised here:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/systemcenter/en-US/1391acf8-f0be-4a48-9039-8d24e275f1fd/kms-idle-time-monitor-raise-wrong-alerts?forum=operationsmanagermgmtpacks, but  I am running Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 and the hotfix KB981314 comes
up as 'not applicable to this computer' so I assume it is part of SP1 now.  I have also tried installing KB2692929, as that was cited as being a possible fix here:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/systemcenter/en-US/8ec8ae5b-a310-4b0f-9a5f-e0599bceb93a/kms-managementpack?forum=operationsmanagermgmtpacks, however I am still seeing the same alerts.
Would greatly appreciate any further suggestions!
    Many thanks

    Hi,
I've checked for all the events that are generated by our servers, and there are periods of time where no requests are received for up to 18 hours, so that is no doubt why the alerts are appearing (we then sometimes see five requests in the same minute,
but there we go).  I'll need to adjust the thresholds.
Thank you for your help, Chunky.1, I'll mark your reply as the answer, as it was very helpful in understanding the alert.
For anyone else who needs to check this, create a PowerShell script using the following content, and place your own details into the relevant sections in bold (without the brackets, of course).  This will generate a csv file which will have the server
name in one column and the time that the request event was generated - you can then check the gaps between the requests.  The script is quick and dirty, with no checks along the way, so feel free to embellish it as required.
    Out-File "<directory to place file in>\KMS_check_results.csv"
    $results = get-eventlog -ComputerName <KMS server hostname> -logname 'Key Management Service'|where{$_.message -match "<String which identifies servers instead of clients>"}
    $filteredresults = @()
    foreach($event in $results){
#This splits up the message into sections, separated by commas, and places each section as an element in an array
        $event.Message -split ","|foreach{
            if($_ -match "<server domain suffix - e.g. contoso.com>"){
                $eventserver = $_
        $timegenerated = $event.TimeGenerated
        $filteredresults += New-Object PSObject -Property @{
            Server = $eventserver
            TimeGenerated = $timegenerated
    $filteredresults|select-object server,timegenerated|export-csv "<directory to place file in>\KMS_check_results.csv"  -NoTypeInformation

  • Safari Page Won't Load When Connected to Plasma TV as Monitor

I am a new Mac user and was hoping someone could help me with this issue. I have a MacBook Pro 13" laptop running Mac OS X (10.6.2) and the latest version of Safari (4.0.4) and when I connect it to my Plasma TV using the displayport to DVI adaptor, Safari pages never load. It just shows loading and finally gives an error stating that the server can't be found. If I immediately unplug the external display and reload the page, it loads fine. All other applications function and display fine. The resolution of the monitor is 1024 x 768. I have also connected the laptop to my HP 20" monitor using the same connection and everything works fine. Its resolution is 1280 x 800. My ISP is Comcast and it is being delivered using a linksys wireless router. Does anyone have any insight as to why this is happening or what I am doing wrong? Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello, SockMonkeyGirl.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I understand that you are unable to use your internet based applications when connected to the Comcast network only.  I would recommend making sure that this Comcast network settings are updated to the recommend as outlined below.  Also make sure that all firewalls are disabled as well.

  • Span-Based Monitor of IPPA Agents at remote site for UCCX 9X

I understand to be able to monitor/record agents using IPPA (for UCCX), you need to utilize Span-based monitoring as opposed to Desktop Monitoring. According to the SRND, it also states that there should be no routing devices between agent phone (IPPA) and UCCX server which means no routers in between. Question I have is if I put the failover UCCX at the same location as the IPPA agents, would this work? I understand there might be an issue with redundancy with this scenario. Thoughts?

It is possible without QM. When using desktop monitoring, the phone is configured to Span to PC port. The agent must be running CAD and the PC running it must be attached to the PC port on the phone. CAD sees the spanned packets from the phone and then forwards them to the recording service on the CCX server. The big gotcha is that the NIC in the PC must not discard 802.1q-tagged packets. If the NIC discards them instead of forwarding them into the NDIS stack, CAD will never see them. Sometimes this takes a Google search and a registry setting change to fix if it doesn't work at first.

  • PRI monitoring problem with SNMP

    Hello
I'm having some problems with PRI monitoring.
    I'm using cpmDS1ActiveDS0 MIB on a 3800 VoIP gateway with 4 PRI (2x2) (IOS 12.4(4)T1)
1.3.6.1.4.1.9.10.19.1.1.9.1.3.0.0 - I can see PRI 0/0/0 total number of calls
1.3.6.1.4.1.9.10.19.1.1.9.1.3.0.1 - I can see PRI 0/0/1 total number of calls
    1.3.6.1.4.1.9.10.19.1.1.9.1.3.1.0 - Error
    1.3.6.1.4.1.9.10.19.1.1.9.1.3.1.1 - Error
    1.3.6.1.4.1.9.10.19.1.1.9.1.3.0.0.x - Error
    1.3.6.1.4.1.9.10.19.1.1.9.1.3.0.1.x - Error
The PRIs that we want to see are 0/1/0 e 0/1/1...... (bad luck!)
Do I need to make some special configuration on the Router?

Have you had any responses to this issue ?
I am running into exactly the same issue and have tried everything I can find to get these individual PRI (count of channels/lines in use) statistics.
Just for the record, here are some of the SNMP OIDs that I have tried (the ISRs do respond to them, only thing is, the data they send back is mostly rubbish...) the output below is from two separate routers, with different versions of IOS running (which is shown in the sysdescr response):
Note that the query in red in the second router was responded to with a valid response in the FIRST router...
All of these OIDs have been suggested at various sites online as useable SNMP OIDs for the ISR, but at other sites, they are suggested to be faulty.  I have found no definitive statement for ways to get these stats successfully on the ISR platform (which amazes me.)  Output below is using net-snmp to collect the stats.
I welcome any suggestions as to how this can be done reliably for the ISR, and what IOS versions WILL work.  (since I am getting way different reponses to the same OIDs on the two versions below).
You'll see that for the second (DC) router below, the values are always Zero.
Yet I can guarantee that the ACTUAL stats are NEVER zero during the time period queried.

  • Lose interfaces from MRTG monitor system after upgrade.

    After upgrade C7609S routers from:
    c7600rsp72043-adventerprisek9-mz.122-33.SRD4.bin
    to
    c7600rsp72043-adventerprisek9-mz.150-1.S3a.bin
I lose interface with ip mpls configure form the MRTG SNMP pooling system. cfgmakre not see any more that interfaces (intrefaces fall on ($if_ok) filter). Other interface which not have a ip mpls configured is normally visible in the our MRTG monitoring system.
From my site it is looks like that interface when I configure ip mpls go to unknown state for MRTG. That interfaces are not any more ethernet type.
I can reach interface with configure ip mpls only with manual configure *.cfg file with  ifindex value.
If you now how to fix that problem pleas let me know.
    Best regards,
    Primoz

Im not a Mac person and dont really know if this will fix it but try re-setting the work area and see if it then sticks.
Show screen shots if you can.
Maybe another Mac user can help.

  • Retina Display is making my new Monitor Pixilated.

Recently, I have bought a new MacBook Pro Retina Display and an Hp Pavilion 27xi Monitor. I just hooked up my monitor to my laptop last night and I noticed the picture on my monitor is Pixilated. I've been told by a friend that it's because of my Retina display and it could not be fixed. I really hope this is not the case, but I have messed with all of the resolution settings (they only gave me three 720p, 1080p, and 1600x900) I was wondering if there was a way I could somehow create new settings for my monitor so it looks clear just like my macbook pro does. Any help would be appreciated, I'm somewhat desperate right now. Thanks.

    Hi gluMoster,
It's frustrating when laying out your hard earned cash on technology to find out that it just doesn't fix your issues. Fortunately it sounds to me that your issue is your network and/or internet service provider. The "speedtest" only checks your connectivity to various servers on the internet, and doesn't really test out your laptop.
For a hardware(laptop/desktop) test I recommend geekbench which can be found at http://www.primatelabs.com/geekbench/ the tools here will test your machines processor and give you an idea of your hardwares speed.
To remedy your problem I would first check your wireless router (I am assuming your laptop connects to the internet wirelessly) and see if it is atleast N capable. I see routers all the time that are B/G that get old and just can't deliver the speed that new and added network devices and websites require to function frictionless. If your router is an N or better yet an AC, then we'd need to look at your modem or your service provider. If you have ATT DSL, there have been reports, somewhat confirmed, that they are dialing down things on the DSL side in order to persuade their customers to move to Uverse, but you didn't hear that from me
If your router is ok, and the modem too take your laptop and sit it relatively close to your wireless router/access point and run the speedtest again. It could be that some new piece of furniture, or maybe even cordless phone is blocking the wireless signal to where you use your laptop most.
    Best of luck,
    damon
