Monitoring traffic and collisions

Hello-
I am wondering if I could get some feedback on a utility that can be used to monitor collisions (source of problem) on the switches in my cluster. Current setup: 8 x 3548's -> 1 x 3550 in a star config. There seems to be alot of latency at times. I have MRTG running against the 3550, but I need to get to the root of the problem. Any help would be appreciated. Thx in advance.

That is a strange graph from MRTG. Are you sure that MRTG is still updating? The only time I have seen MRTG draw a graph like that is when it stops updating. The reason for this is when MRTG can no longer collect data it just keeps using the last successful measurement and you end up with a never changing graph like you have.
Ports blinking amber usually indicate errors. If you do a show interface command every couple of minutes do you see the error cuonters incrementing? If not then you might have failing hardware or heavy traffic in a half duplex environment. If you set the port speeds and duplex you must match the settings on all attached hosts. Hosts that are not set will match speed but end up at half duplex resulting in collisions.
The MRTG/MIB stuff from the URL I supplied sometimes works - sometimes not. If it doesn't work it is the MIB portion that is ususally incorrect.

How to monitor traffic and associations per AP with WCS?

Hi,
is there a way to get traffic and client access/associations data with WCS for each AP of a centrally managed WLAN?
I manage a campus WLAN with a 4402 WLC (software version 6.0.188.0) and a WCS version 6.0.170.0 .
WCS provides me detailed information on a client basis: I'm able to know the association history of each client currently
connected, both which AP the client has connected to, and how much traffic the client has generated/received for each connection.
I hadn't find a way to get the same information on an AP basis. Namely, which clients have been connected, and how much traffic
has been transmitted per time slot.
I suppose this is just a matter of making a different query to the WCS database, since the data are the same used for providing
the information on the client association and traffic history. Though, I haven't find a way on WCS to get this information.

IDSM-2 (7.0.2) want it to monitoring traffic and not affect anything

Hello All,
I am pretty new to IDSM's, just trying to learn about them. I am working on a production network so I'm having to be pretty careful..
We have 2 X 6513 with two IDSM-2 installed in each which have just been upgraded to 7.0.2. They are all in promiscuous mode and we are using VACLS to redirect traffic to them for checking, I want to ensure there is no way that the production traffic can be affected, I can see most of the actions that affect traffic require the IDSM's to be working in INLINE mode.
The action I was worried about was the TCP RESET, from what I read it seems that this is sent from the management interface of the device and I believe (I may not be correct) that this is available both in inline and in promiscuous mode. Can anyone confirm if this is correct, is the TCP RESET available in PROMISCUOUS mode and if it is how do I turn it off. Currently we only want the devices to monitor and then move to the more advanced features after we get a better understanding of our network.
P.S. Could anyone suggest a good document on how to go about managing and making use of the amount of alerts, and also IDSM setting up and tuning in general..
Any help anyone could give would be gratefully appreciated.

The action that you specify on each signature defines the action taken. When in promiscuous mode (IDS), actions like drop inline etc will not be available. The best way to go about what you want is to set all your signatures to just fire alerts when they trigger. Some signatures will have actions like tcp reset but if you sort from the action column in the IDM you can easily find these and remove the action and rather just produce alert for it instead. This will allow you to tweak your IDS before applying it inline (IPS) if that is your goal.
Be aware also that the IDS will baseline your network and the Anomaly Detection module will act a little crazy if you don't let it monitor your network for 1-2 days of normal traffic.

Monitoring traffic and connections to N300 router

I just successfully installed the n300 router and have connected several computers, Kindles and a printer to the Internet through this router. Is there software available that would help me monitor the various devices connected to this router? I had an older router (WRT110) that had such sw but none came with the new router.

Hi Seajay43, I believe that the device comes with a Cisco Connect software that will allow you to monitor how many devices are connected. It will not allow you to monitor them in such a comprehensive manner though unlike the software that you are referring to but if you only want to know the number of devices connected, it will do. Monitoring traffic but not use IP SLA

I have a problem. I make a leased line between ISP (Service Provider) to Customer. And customer want to monitor traffic on this link. I can use IP SLA to do it. But now, customer don't agree to open ICMP on this link so IP SLA fall
Can everyone help me to resolve it?

SNMP traps for IP SLAs are handled through the system logging (syslog) process. This means that system logging messages for IP SLAs violations are generated when the specified conditions are met, then sent as SNMP traps using the CISCO-SYSLOG-MIB. The ip sla monitor logging traps command is used to enable the generation of these IP SLAs specific traps. The generation of IP SLAs specific logging messages is dependant on the configuration of the standard set of logging commands (for example, logging on). IP SLAs logging messages are generated at the "informational" system logging severity level.
The command ip sla monitor logging traps is sometime hidden and may not show with ?, so just copy and paste in global config mode and have logging on and check if any traps are generated.

How do I hook a Mac Mini to an existing PC Laptop Dock in order to use existing 23" monitor, mouse, and keyboard?

My parents currently have a Dell Inspiron desktop (which thanks to Windows has crashed and requred re-installation of the OS and then ordering an OEM hard drive and starting from scratch). Anyway, my dad has started bringing home a work laptop, and I got him a laptop docking station so he could take advantage of the 23" monitor, keyboard, and wireless mouse that he prefers.
My brother and I are going to buy my parents at Mac Mini for Christmas. It's probably simple (or with my luck, impossible) but I need to know what I need to know in order to also hook up the Mac Mini to the monitor/keyboard/mouse (we may buy a keyboard and mouse). Is it just a matter of cables/splitters?
I'd appreciate any assistance. I've been trying to get my parents switched over to Mac for almost 10 years now. Dad is stubborn and will definitely want to use the 23" monitor he bought so I have to find a way to make that work. The keyboard and mouse aren't a huge deal - instead of being on the drawer that rolls out from under the desk, the Mac stuff can be on top of the desk. I just need to know if it's possible to avoid that and do everything through the docking station (even if I have to get a USB hub). I'm pretty sure the monitor has a DVI input, and the current work laptop is using the analog input.

The Mac mini is not going to be able to use the Dell docking station itself, due to
the Mac mini is not a laptop
it does not have a docking connector
However you might be able to achieve what you want with a KVM (Keyboard, Video, and Mouse) switchbox which would sit between the dock and Mac mini and the Screen/Keyboard/Mouse.
For this to be as easy as possible, both computers need to be using the same types of connections, so that means USB for the keyboard and mouse, and ideally DVI for the monitor. I am using a dock with a Dell laptop and the dock does have a DVI connection as well as a VGA connection so yours might as well.

In theory you could use a VGA adaptor on the Mac mini to make both use VGA but widespread reports suggest VGA on the latest Mac mini is very unrealiable.

I just bought a new external monitor (ASUS), and I have DVI adapter plug. When I connect it with my Macbook pro - the monitor remain black (even tho it is 'on')

HELP! I have a dual monitor setup and can't use any of them for video??

1)I have a GeForce4 MX 64MB VRAM card installed.
2) the back is dual monitor capable, meaning it has 2 vga (CRT) ports, one on the right and an another adapted plug with a vga port on the end. ( i have no idea which type it was originaly.)
3) I have a big dell LCD
THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED:
the adapter plug ripped off, reveal copper thread things and is now unusable. Although saddened, I was not worried because I don't use a dual monitor anyway and I switched to the other port. BUT THE VIDEO DOESNT WORK ON THAT PORT. I can't figure it out it just doesnt load any video?
the truth is i would rather have a dvi cable set up because i assume its better.

I recently, decided to upgrade from 19.0b to the current (26.0) version, as "Tab Utilities" now supports 26, but am finding one of the visual changes counter productive. My two workstations have multiple monitors. One has 2 monitors (2560x1600) and the other one has 4 monitors (2560x1600). On both workstations, I'll place the various Firefox informational windows off the "main monitor" (the one directly in front of me). This way they're available to me at a glance.
(Side note: I refer to my monitors, as 2L, 1 2R and the 4th as "auxiliary.") The one thing I miss most is being able size these Firefox windows independently and in different positions.
I mean I'm used to seeing "Download" on monitor 2R on the right side (1/8 of screen) behind Microsoft Process Explorer's System Information. While the History will be on monitor 2L on the right side at 1/4 of the screen). I'm used to glancing out my right eye at the downloads and when needing something from the past, it's right next to the main monitor #1. This way I can access history quickly.
I can see why a developer (with one monitor say 1920 x 1080) would love seeing one window, but why can't Firefox support both single and multiple monitor users at the same?
Anyway, is there a way to get 26.0 to place at least "Download" and "History" in separate sizable windows?
(I'm not jumping up and down to go back to 19.0b or to try 25, but would like to stay current.)

OK, let's do a real world example of what I'm seeing on my two monitor system. I'll first describe what I experienced with 19.0b and earlier, which is IMHO how it should work in 26 and beyond ('''''as an option'''''). Next, I'll review what I'm seeing in 26.0. Hopefully this will help you understand what changed, from a practical perspective.
In 19.0b (and how I like working) for a multiple monitor system:
On the main monitor, I'm running Firefox. It is 1920 x 1080 and is in the lower right hand corner.
On the the monitor to my right (2R), I have the Download Manager list of downloading and downloaded file. It is in the upper right hand corner and takes up about 300 x 1500 pixels.
For a two monitor system, I have the History List running beside Firefox in the lower right hand corner and it is 600 x 1080.
For a three (plus) monitor system, I have the History List running on my left (2L) monitor. It is in the lower right hand corner and is 600 x 1080 pixels big.
For 26.0: I'm seeing the following:
On the main monitor, I'm running Firefox. It is 1920 x 1080 and is in the lower right hand corner. (This is the SAME as with 19.0b.)
When I start the Download Manager and have it set up as I do for 19.0b, it looks OK. It is on monitor 2R and is 450 x 1500 pixels (because of the new navigation side bar).

When starting the History List, it replaces the Download Manger on the 2R monitor in the 450 x 1500 pixel window. This doesn't work for me because:
1) It is too far away to see. (NOTE: I put it on the 2L monitor in the lower right hand corner. so I can see it easier for the 3+ monitor. In the case of the 2 monitor, I put it beside Firefox again to see it easier.)
Some might ask, but the Download Manager is on the 2R and right side, why can't the History List be there too? Good question, and I can only reply saying:
1) Personal choice.
2) The Download Manager is NOT as busy as the History List and I find it easy to read.
3) The History List is a lot busier and the font size looks to be smaller (might be the same, but it looks smaller to my eyes). I need it closer to me / Firefox.
What I'm saying is this . . . The Download Manager and History List have <ul>''valid reasons to be visible to the user at the same time''.</ul> They also need to be independent of one another for (at least) size and location.
Combining them together is OK for some people, but NOT for everyone. Please make it an option to combine (as in 26) and separate (25 and earlier).
I'm not sure this is the best way to put it, but here goes. Allow users to collapse or expand these various lists by using multiple windows. One window is the collapse view and multiple independent windows is the expand view.

My secondary monitor flashes and blacks out after the 10.7 install. Any ideas on how to fix this?

I have installed 10.7 and the secondary monitor flashes and blacks out. I downgraded back to 10.6 and the problem went away. I reinstalled 10.7 and the same problem happened again. The monitor blacks in and out especially when the pointer is placed in the dock area, but it still happens all the time. My secondary monitor is a ViewSonic 22 inch that is connected to a DVI to display adapter. Any solutions??

Talked to AppleCare and it's most likely the fact that my MacBook has 3.0 USB ports and my non official charging cable can't support that. So yeah, I'll try a new cable, hopefully that's the fix.

As for the texts, you could purchase a separate device, and use the child's Apple ID to monitor the iMessages. For SMS/MMS, no way to monitor it. You'll have to use the app called 'Random Parental Inspections'.

The monitor will work if it has an HDMI, VGA ir DVI input. If it only has a VGA input you will need this adopter

Once the error has been determined and corrected it is not necessary to resend the IDoc again. You simply resend the IDocs that have already been generated.
Using the IDoc overview screen you need to take note of the following for each IDoc that was not processed:
Error number: 2, 4, 5, 25, 29
Error number: 30 (Execute Check IDoc dispatch to process)
IDoc number
Using the Error number, the IDoc number and the transaction BD88 , with the required message type you can resend the IDoc. Match the error number with this transaction and execute the function for the IDocs incorrectly processed.

A reset may help. Tap and hold the Home button and the On/Off buttons for approximately 15-20 seconds, until the Apple logo reappears. When the logo appears, release both buttons.
No content is affected by this procedure.

I have an Imac. When I click to open google maps a permeable but dark screen covers my monitor screen and I get a note that tells me to shut down the computer and restart it. This hasn't helped. Everything else seems to work fine.

When I attempt to open google maps in Firefox on my Imac, a dark screens descends over my monitor screen and a note tells me there's been an error, no number is noted, and that I need to turn off and restart my computer. This doesn't help, but everything else works, including google maps in other browsers.

This is a kernel panic.
First verify that Firefox is fully updated including all extensions.
If this fails to fix....
Restart in Safe Boot mode then open Firefox.
* shutdown
* start the Mac and *wait* for the startup chime to sound
* after the sound, press and hold down the shift key
* keep holding and *wait* until the grey  Apple logo appears
* now release the shift key and just wait (it could take a few minutes)
* eventually the login screen appears with the words SAFE BOOT
* login and open Firefox.
