Monitoring Virtual Machine activity

I have been assigned a task of monitoring a ESX server with multiple virtual machines installed at any one time. This server is a hosting platform for a software test environment which is used by multiple users with various OS's and applications under test. My issue is that I need visability into the network traffic passing on the virtual network switch infrastructure to resolve networking issues and between the various testbeds. At the moment I use the promiscous port capability of the virtual switch to gather network flows using Wireshark but analysing pcap files is way too slow and time consuming. Are there any virtual appliances out there that make this task possible?

Hi
After trying a few products to monitor my servers I tried the following and got a version to evaluate. Install was straight foward and I just needed to configure the virtual switch in Promiscous mode. This product combines a traffic analyser and IDS system which has proven to be very usefull to analyse the issues that were causing me so many problems.

Another bonus was I could configure a number of 'slave' units which allowed me monitor multiple ESX servers from a single central unit. This was very usefull.

  • Activate the virtual machine

    Activate the virtual machine
I know that 2012 can be a self-activation technology, activate the virtual machine hyperv inside,
    Host 2012R2 Add hyperV role
    2008 r2 installed operating system,
Is there any way I can be free to activate the system virtual machine do? ? ?
In addition, I have heard, 2012R2 can activate three free virtual machine, but I currently do not know what to do.
    Host Installation: 2012R2 add hyperV Role Genuine serial numbers have been used to activate over;
    hyperV: mounting system is 2008R2 systems;
The question is: how to activate inside 2008R2 system? ?

    Hi 中子112,
If you installed Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter, Datacenter enables an unlimited number of VMs on the licensed host server.
And there is a new function is AVMA on server 2012 r2, AVMA lets you install virtual machines on a properly activated Windows server without having to manage product keys for each individual virtual machine, even in disconnected environments.
To activate VMs with AVMA, please follow these articles:
    Automatic Virtual Machine Activation
Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Automatic Virtual Machine Activation
To get more detailed information about hyper-v license issue, please check this article:

  • Do i need to activate windwos server datacenter 2012 virtual machines seperatley

    Hello All,
i have purchased windows server 2012 data center license and i have installed hyper v and created 4vms. do i need to activate those vms also? if yes, how will i get keys.
    Thanks

You can activate you VMs on 2012 R2 via AVMA (Automatic Virtual Machine Activation)
    Just use this keys:
    slmgr /ipk ‹AVMA-key›
    Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter
    Y4TGP-NPTV9-HTC2H-7MGQ3-DV4TW
    Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard

  • Activate Virtual Machines on OEM Server 2012 R2 Standard

As allowed under my license I can run my OEM Server 2012 R2 as a Hyper V Host and run 2 production Server 2012 R2 VMs.
So how do I activate these VMs? What am I missing?
I tried using the OEM key of the server/host. Failed.
I tried using the AVMA key. Failed.
    Shouldn't be this hard.
One of the machines I want to activate is a Server Core. I can see posts around the place saying use the OEM and if it fails call Microsoft activation. But I can find none of the options or information how to complete the phone activation via sconfig or
    command line options.
Really should not be this hard at all. Someone should be fired and this process fixed.

    Hi,
Did you talk about Windows Server 2012r2 with hyper-v role or Hyper-v Server 2012r2?
Activating a VM is the same as activating a physical machine. When the VM asks to be activated, you would use the same product key as you used to activate your physical host. If this is an OEM licensed server, your OEM should have provided you with the proper
    key.

  • Virtual Server Activation at VM

    Hello,
I have built up new 2012 R2 standard edition with VOL license key.
and then setup another Hyper-V 2012R2 standard VM.  However, VM could not able to active by same VOL key.
Also tried using AVMA key with below URL reference but no luck.
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2014/01/07/automatic-virtual-machine-activation-in-windows-server-2012-r2.aspx
What problem now and how to fix it.
    Thanks!

AVMA only works on a Datacenter version of 2012R2, as that allows for unlimited VMs.
You should contact your licensing provider about additional keys, or call the activation line and explain what you're doing.
At one point, MS did give "virtual" keys along with the primary key, but I don't think they do that with 2012 any longer.

  • SCOM 2012 RC - SCVMM 2012 RC - Virtual machine manager management group is not getting monitored

    Hi All,
I have integrated SCOM 2012 with SCVMM 2012 environment. I could see two strange behaviors. All these instance are running on Windows 2008 R2 + Sp1 OS along with SQL 2008 R2 for database.
    1) I could see two instance of VirtualmanagerDB
in the Database State view under the Microsoft SQL Server, out of that
one is showing as monitored and another one is
showing as not monitored. Why it is showing two instance of the same database? How can I remove the not monitored one?
    2) In the distributed apps- Virtual machine manager management group is not showing as a monitored item. However the SCVMM server is getting monitored.
I'd appreciate if someone could help me out in understanding and resolving this.
    Regards,
    Ren.

    Hi
I opened up a connect ticket on this on 17th Jan so sorry for not noticing your post earlier. The response was:
Health State dashboard view is targeted to two state views. "Agent Watcher State" and "Agent State". "Agent State" view (view with duplicate entry) is targeted to an abstract class "VMM Agent" which has below child classes.
        VMM Library Agent
        VMM Host Agent
        Guest Agent
For the Dashboard view, we need to taget the view to "Host Agent" not "VMM Agent". When we install VMM, it adds itself as a Library server and that is the reason for duplicate entry (VMM Library Agent).
    Cheers

  • Monitor profiling & ICC profile management in VMware virtual machines?

    Greetings,
I'm successfully running Photoshop CC in Windows 7 on bare metal PCs.  To support that, I profile/calibrate my monitors with Datacolor Spyder4Elite and print with Qimage.  Photoshop, Spyder4, and Qimage all create and/or install ICC profiles.  Does any/all of that function correctly within virtual machines hosted by VMware Workstation (v9.0.2, specifically)?  Datacolor's Spyder4Elite, for example, relies upon periodic reloading of the LUT (Look-Up Table) of the graphics adapter.  The other apps I mention ask Windows to use ICC profiles.  Can I successfully move all of these workflow elements into virtual machines?
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

No, actually the System Default stayed the same, but the ACER profile showed up in the Devices panel.  However, [ ] Use My Settings was NOT checked, implying they found some way to install the profile that's outside the normal configuration settings somewhere between the Advanced and Devices level configuration.
The fix is to check the [ ] Use My Settings box, add the profile one wants to use in the Devices panel, and [Set as Default Profile].  This overrides the setting above.

  • Multi-"Machine" Activation Question:  Virtual Machines

    Hi,
I am developing plugins and have the need to test with a wide range of Photoshop versions on a wide range of operating systems.
At the moment I'm accomplishing this through the use of VMware virtual machines.  I have a powerful 64 bit host workstation running Vista x64 and have created virtual machines for XP Pro, Vista 32 bit, Win7 RC, and Win7 retail.  Virtualization saves me from having to build a lab full of test hardware.
I have the desire to test with versions 6 through CS4...  I haven't yet gone through the process of installing all the versions of Photoshop on all these VMs; just a few, which is probably covered under the 2 activations limit...  My question is this:
Will Adobe consider it a separate activation for each virtual machine?  Can they be "sweet talked" into allowing more?  I am running them all on one computer, and (generally speaking) using only one at a time.
From what I can see the software will not realize this is one and the same computer, since the virtualization environment does a good job of convincing the OS that it's a completely separate computer...  I suppose I will forge ahead and call Adobe...  Adobe phone contact is not touted to be much of an easy or rewarding thing from what I hear.
Any advice on how to proceed with setting up a decent testing environment to support long-term multi-platform testing would be great.
    Thanks in advance.
    -Noel

I would read this attached page. We are pretty much users like you and cannot speak for adobe or how they might react to your question. Calling them is the only option.

  • Monitoring Oracle Virtual Machine for Solaris servers and LDOMs

    Hi all,
could anyone tell me if we can monitor Oracle Virtual Machine for Solaris servers and LDOMs with only Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c, or shall we need to install Ops Center ?
    Thank you in advance.

I had the same issue. Upgrading Virtual box from 4.1.16 to 4.1.20 solved the problem.

  • Activation based license not recognized by Virtual Machine (Vivado 2014.4)

    Hi,
I am using an VirtualBox to host a Ubuntu 64-bit Linux machine. And I have a Vivado node-locked license. In the first time, when I tried to generate license and used it with the machine, everything went well. But then I returned the license back to Xilinx, so that I can generate the license again for any other machine.
Then, the time comes to me that I need to use my Linux VM again. After generating the "Xilinx_license.xml" file via the Xilinx licensing website, the VLM refuses the license with the message:
Then I tried using command prompt to process the license, but I got the foolowing output:
    di@di-VirtualBox:~$ xlicclientmgr -p ~/Downloads/Xilinx_License.xml
ERROR: API function 60009 failed, result 51308
Request generated on a different machine
    Response processing failed.
The response is not valid for this machine.
    Exit(4) error when processing response.
So I am now stuck in a state that I have a license generated, but I cannot use it, and I also cannot return it back to Xilinx. I need some help from Xilixn technical support.
    A list of my questions:
    - what did I do wrong so that such an error occurs? ( I was able to use my VM and Vivado without any problem for the first time)
    - how to make VLM recognize this license again?
    - is there anyway to get myself out of the stuck-with-the-license state?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Di Cao

    Hi ,
The Virtual Machine has never been removed or changed.
I merely returned the Xilinx license that was once assigned to this Virtual Machine some days ago, and today I tried to generate a license again for the same Virtual Machine.
Somehow the VLM does not recognize the license.xml at all, and I am now stuck with this license that can neither be recognized nor be returned.
Is it possible to un-do the current generated license and allow the Xilinx licensing site to generate a new license again?
    Regards,
    Di

Now if I downgrade to 4.3.14 it says me that module vboxdrv is not loaded (not true).
Can anyone help me to make the last version working?
    Thank you in advance.

I updated succesfully but now I have another problem, when I try to share a folder it says me
    [virtual-user@arch-vm_desktop sbin]$ sudo mount -t vboxsf Virtualbox /mnt/Virtualbox
/sbin/mount.vboxsf: mounting failed with the error: No such file or directory
I read on the wiki and it's written that the problem is the vboxsf module not loaded but

Thanks - Of Course the first thing I checked and did.
    Disc Utility reads as follows:
    Capacity : 159.18 GB (159,182,127,104 Bytes)
Format : Mac OS Extended (Journaled)  Available : 11.47 GB (11,472,896,000 Bytes)
Owners Enabled : Yes  Used : 147.71 GB (147,709,231,104 Bytes)
Number of Folders : 139,540  Number of Files : 511,832
Activity Monitor(Disc Usage) shows something quite interesting.  Mac HD and Ramanan (Main User) - My hard drive is only 160GB!  Would the retired engineer gentleman please note as well.  Many thanks. Rams

  • SAPB1 in virtual machine?

    Hello!
Has anyone had a success story running SAP B1 in a virtual machine, particularly virtualbox? Here is our problem: sql or SAP installer is very inefficient and stalls the installation process at 100% cpu for hours.
    Our setup. Host server:
    2 x Intel(r) Xeon(r) CPU E5620  @ 2.40GHz (2 x 4 cores, 2 x 8 virtual processors)
    24GB RAM
    6 x 1TB SATA-3GB 7200 rpm in RAID5 (raidz1)
    Software: Opensolaris, SunOS 5.11 snv_134b
    Virtualbox 3.1.8
SAPB1 Virtual Machine (more details - at the bottom):
    Hardware (virtual)
    4 cores, 8GB RAM, 32MB video ram, 2 HDDs:
C:\ - host: VMDK 80GB, dynamically allocate storage, on RAID5/raidz1 volume, guest: NTFS
E:\ - host: VDI 200GB, dynamically allocate storage, on the same raidz1, guest: NTFS
    Software:
    Windows Server 2008 R2 64bit (180 days evaluation license)
SQL Server 2008 R2 (180 days evaluation license)
    SAP B1 8.81
    Situation:
SQL server is configured by SAP installer. When installing SAP Demo database the VMu2019s cpu usage stays at 100% with sqlserver process at 18%, RAM usage is at only 40% (60% free), the installation process takes 6-7 hours to complete. SQL data and log files are placed in the same C:\ drive as the guest operating system. Disk activity shown by the host system is on average 300KB/s writes. The load on the host machine is 10% cpu for the copy of VirtualBox running this VM but no other cpu- ram- or disk-intensive tasks running at all. Earlier tests showed 30MB/s sustained writes on raidz1 but significantly faster in bursts due to effective ZFS caching in hostu2019s RAM. For what I can tell, there is plenty of disk bandwidth, host cpu and ram and guest ram.
Thereu2019s also a weirdest thing: CPU figures on guest donu2019t add up: performance monitor shows 100% cpu used on all four cores but when you look at individual processes the biggest one is sqlserver at 18%, SAP setup is 0-3%, taskmanager itself is 6-12%, the rest is negligible including IDLE process at 0-2%. The machine is clearly very busy with slow screen updates etc. but the sum of all running processes plus idle process is at 40-50%. Once install of the demo database  sucessfully finished many hours later cpu usage came back to normal - 95-97% idle.
    Suspicions:
    1. SAP installer and/or production executables are compiled so that they arenu2019t happy at all under a hypervisor or only under virtualbox in particular. Earlier trial installation of the an old, 2004, version of SAPB1 on the same VM didnu2019t show this problem although we didnu2019t specifically test performance, it was just an early test installation. Slow u201Cby designu201D?
1a. SAP is not happy with evaluation versions of Windows Server or SQL. Slow u201Cby designu201D?
    2. Placing demo DB files and logs on a different virtual drive (E:\) or an iSCSI drive will dramatically improve performance of SQL - This is next thing we are going to try.
2a. VirtualBoxu2019es realisation of VMDK (VMware disk format) is affecting performance.
2b. The format of virtual disks was chosen to dynamically allocate storage which is, although it seems plenty of spare host disk performance is available is still inefficient. But then, why CPU usage is the problem? Is that caused by badly written .exe files that do not return spare cpu cycles while waiting for disk operations?
    Many thanks for any tips!

While the other suggestions here have merit, I wonder what can be done with your current solution...
Why are you running such an old version of VirtualBox?  Version 4.1.4 is available for Solaris machines; I would think you could use that under OpenSolaris (although I am unfamiliar with the details of OpenSolaris, as I haven't run it).
The dynamically-allocated disk is the second most likely culprit in the performance issues, right behind the older version of VirtualBox...  I have used the dynamic allocation many times for file servers and application servers, but a database server needs to have the highest disk I/O performance possible.  I don't like to see my client application waiting on the database to allocate new disk space which is waiting on the hypervisor to provide additional disk...  I think you see my point.
You might take a snapshot or clone the VM and test on another machine, even to the point of cloning the existing virtual hard drive to one which was created as a statically allocated disk.
Those would be the first two items I would try out.  Let us know how successful you are; I'd love to hear what seems to be the bottleneck, as we are considering placing our B1 services inside a VM.  We are considering VirtualBox, VMware, and Citrix Xen at the moment.
