Monitoring with Effects

Question

I used Cubase a few years ago, and while recording audio tracks, it was impossible to monitor through the computer because of the latency. So, the alternative was having 2 outputs from what was being recorded - one that was being recorded (clean), and another that was put into a mixer with the output from the computer with the rest of the tracks on it, which I added some hardware reverb to for monitoring.
But, as I now have a brand new Penryn 2.5 MacBook Pro with 4GB RAM, 7200rpm HD etc. with Logic Studio 8, I was wondering if it is possible to monitor through Logic, adding some reverb just for monitoring (ie. not being recorded), for stuff like vocals, and guitar? Basically, I'd use the input on my MBP (I'll be using the built-in soundcard) from a guitar fx preamp, or mic preamp (assuming I have the correct connections), and the output from my MBP to go to headphones for the performer to monitor on, with no audible latency, so that they can hear themselves and the backing track, with a bit of reverb added for "confidence".

Well, it depends - on a variety of things.
First you should set you Low Latency Mode timing to whatever you consider is 'no latency'. Some people go crazy with 10ms and others can't hear 50ms. Engage low latency mode when you record. I have NO IDEA what the built in converters are like in a MBP - or even my Mac Pro - so I can't say what you should expect.
I would start with the Silver Verb as it takes the least amount of processing - and it sounds like it. See what you think. If there is too much latency or if Low Latency Mode turns the plug-in Orange (disables it) then you'll know it isn't possible. If it works, then try a Gold verb, then a Platinium, etc. I would imagine that Space designer would be too much. However, instead of a verb, why don't you try a delay. That will take up much less processing power, will be clearer to hear the pitch, and will take up less space in the mix to boot.
For the record, I never track with reverb just to make things absolutely clear - and decisions easier to come by. If it sounds good completely dry, then it will sound amazing with whatever makeup you put on later.
