Monolingual, dead apps, shuts down by itself and reformat concerns

Hi, I'm new on Mac, so any advice given to me should be clear and without abbreviation, so I can follow it properly. Thx.
1- I used monolingual without unchecking all the stuff in the two last tabs. The first tab was for the languages, the two last, for the architecture and some other internal components.
2- Since then, my whole Office won't work. I also discovered recently that Toast Titanium and Mac the Ripper would not open either (I did not try them before, thought).
3- Lately, my MacBook would just shut down just after I open it, sometimes 2 times in a row before I can use it. It just happened 5 minutes ago, while I was just surfing on Firefox.
4- When Office was the only symptom, a friend told me to reinstall Office. Now that i have bigger problems, he tells me I should reformat Mac OS. He told me reformatting a Mac is a heavier operation, that as opposed to Windows, it keeps some traces from the older installation, that it is impossible to remove everything, just like if this installation waws the layer on which I a going to reformat and over which the new Mac OS is going to install itself.
I am aware I shoud reformat, even though I did not try to fix the shuts down any other way. I realized that it happens to a lot of user while reading the discussions of some topics. Anyway, my priority concern is the fourth point of my topic. I would still like to know if reformatting is my only way, if there is any other solution.
Thaks in advance, sorry for my bad English, I am francophone.
Regards

You have described two main problems:
1. You used Monolingual in a way that may have removed all the ability to run non-Intel applications, e.g. MS Office.
2. The shutdown problem.
To be sure of fixing the first problem, you can reinstall the OS. There are two choices for reinstalling: erase and install, or archive and install. They are described here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301270
Once you have restored the OS, then you can see which applications do not work, and reinstall them. What your friend said about reinstalling the OS is not correct. If you do an archive and install, you will still have your old files from which you can choose what to keep. If you do an erase and install, none of your old files will remain on your disk.
If you are still having the problem with shutdown, contact Apple.

  • Ever since my upgrade to IOS 5, my ipad 1 has been causing a lot of problems. The apps shut down by itself and I even have tried to reset the iPad but no real effect.

Help. Ever since my upgrade to ios5, any and all apps simply close by themself. I have tried to shut down all the apps which are not in use and I have also reset the iPad a few times (reboot) and yet there is no real effect. Is there a way to go back to the older ios so that I can have peace of mind. It is a crying shame to see all such hassles with ios5.

Downgrading to an older iOS version is not supported on iOS devices.
Make sure that you have downloaded all of the updates for your apps and see if that helps.
Try this as well. if the Apple apps are working OK and it is the third party App Store apps that are crashing - try downloading another app - any free app. See if that helps.
You said that you reset the iPad but you may have to restore your iPad to factory settings and then to a backup if you can't resolve the problem.

My Iphone 4s  shut down by itself after a phone call and I cannot turn it on. I took it to istore and they said it was unrespinsive and there is nothing they can do? Anyone has a clue what can be done? When I connect the phone to itunes it indicates that the phone should be restored, however when i try to restore it, it says the "software for this iphone is not currently available" Is there anything I can do other than put this brand new iphone in the grabage?

On computer, at the top of this page is a Tab for iTunes, click it, make sure iTunes is up to date. Also make sure computer Fire Wall and Anti Virus do not interfere with iTunes, turn them OFF to be certain.

  • Macbook shutting down by itself, and very hot when being used

    Hello!
My 2009 Macbook has me worried. When I put it in sleep mode and plug it in, it shuts down by itself at some point, so every time I go to use it again, I have to turn it on as though I had initially shut it down. Also, the bottom of my laptop is very hot.
Does anyone have any idea what might be going on? I am so grateful for your input!
I am just outside of my Apple Care warranty coverage, unfortunately.

  • Satellite A100 - Shut down by itself and will not boot anymore

Satellite A100 PSAA9A-10U038. Laptop shut down by itself whilst in use. No BIOS upgrades or changes. No lights of any kind showing, no POST.
I have tried the AC power adapter on another machine and works fine. Called Toshiba told me power adapter probably at fault, if I wish to have them look will cost $120.
I'm thinking maybe motherboard died? Any help would be appreciated.
    Tony

    hi Laptop Larry,
try to boot without the batterypack....
can you see the "toshiba screen" while booting?
    you can also try to:
    - remove hdd
    - remove added memory (with no mem the unit should "beep")
    - remove odd (cd-drive)
if you cant get the system to boot (able to enter bios, see toshiba logo on screen, no beep)
than it's possible that your mobo died...

    Boatmoter, welcome to the forum.
Have you checked to see if the computer is overheating while gaming.  Games are intense and can cause heat to rise.  This can definitely cause the computer to restart unexpectedly.  There are many FREE programs that you can use to check the temps.

  • IMac DV G3 Lime shuts down by itself and buzzes

Not sure why this keeps happening. It starts up and runs for about 20 minutes and then shuts down but the light on the front stays on and buzzes. Can't start up again until I unplug it from the wall for a long time. When it's running everything works fine. I LOVE this Mac and want to keep using it. I've had it since brand new oh 2000 something. I have an iBook G4 with 10.4 that I use for everything and everywhere but this iMac is the family computer. Can anyone offer advice? Should I take it to a Genius Bar? Thanks!

    Hi,
I dumpster dive, gather, restore, upgrade and repair iMacs near Chicago.
These are typically high needs schools. Many have no computers at all!
The iMac is particularly well suited to this application.
    A. It has a small foot print and is self contained.
    B. Mac software is intuitive and easy for teachers and students to use
    right away.
    C. The kids think they're cute! I've seen kids hug iMacs! I don't see
    that with any other computer.
So I can see why you're so attached to your Lime iMac. My 9 year old daughter calls her's "Pinky" (Strawberry iMac).
Generally the symptoms you're describing are due to a failing PAV board. This is the brown board that you can see under the clear top with all the big parts on it. The most likely culprit is the flyback transformer. The insulation breaks down with long usage when it heats up and starts to fail. Usually shorts out probably the buzzing you hear. Sometimes this will fail but the computer will still run with an external monitor. (spigot is under the perforated grill under toward the back.)
My general repair procedure with these is to pull the logic board and put it into a working 350.
An alternative in your case would be to find a working 400 - 700 used, buy it ($20 - $70 around here in Chicago) and swap the colored parts on your Lime onto that machine.

  • IPod Touch 5th Gen shut down by itself, and will not turn back on?

I was just on the YouTube app when suddenly my iPod shut itself down, and the battery was well over 50%.
It will not turn back on, and when I plug it into the charger, nothing changes. Any suggestions?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • The phone seems to shut down by itself, and won't start up w/out pressing power and home button

I shouldn't have to reset the phone to start it up. What is triggering this?
The phone will be shut off (pressed the power button on top). Normally, I just press the same button again, or the home button. Sometimes I have to reset the phone. It is a 4s with iOS 5.

Is there anything at all on the screen? Try this procedure:
Plug your device into the original charger & block in a wall outlet and leave it alone for a couple of hours. Then, while it is still plugged in, restart it by holding down the home button and the power button for 10-15 seconds until you see the Apple, then let go.

  • My iPhone 5 shut down by itself and can't be turned on.. help?

I woke up this morning and I couldn't turn on my iPhone. I've tried charging it, just in case if it runs out of battery, but still it can't be turned on. My lock button on top is slightly broken too...

Try a Reboot press & hold power button & menu button hold both down until you see Apple Logo You may need to do this more than once If your power button is broken Take iPhone to Apple Store they may exchange iPhone but you will need to pay part of cost. Bsydd uk

  • Eep! shut down by itself and won't turn back on.

i just tried to wake my computer, but when i pressed the space bar it turned off immediatly. now when i try to turn it on nothing happens. no lights. no noise. there is definatly power coming from the outlet and power strip. i dont know what else to do.
    help me, please.

    This was in the tutorial;
-I found this on a Mac site. Sometimes computers lose their mind. Don't ask me why or how it happens but it does. Sometimes you simply have to totally discharge the computer. One thing I have learned about the Blue and white and the Gray G4 Macs is that sometimes pushing the PMU is not enough. If your machine is dead, then try the following.
    * Unplug the unit.
    * Remove the battery
    * Push the PMU switch (count to 5 slow)
    * Push the start button on the front of the Mac (count to 5 slow)
    * Let the unit sit for 15-30 minutes
    * Replace the battery
    * Plug it back in, and push the start button
If it doesn't work I usually repeat the steps above, pull the RAM, and let it sit longer. If it doesn't work after this, it is take it to the shop time.
    Cheers!

  • Iphone 4S shut down by itself and will not turn on.

I was using my phone in the car on Sunday and it was working perfectly fine, got home and placed it on the table. Went away for 10-15 mintues and I had come back to find it was off which I thought odd as the battery was almost fully charged. I attempted to wake it using the sleep wake button - nothing. I assumed it had gone flat for some reason so I put it on charge, an hour later still nothing, plugged it into the computer - nothing. Tried to hold down the sleep/wake + home button for 30-45 seconds - NOTHING Itunes wouldnt recognized it either it has been off since Sunday afternoon and hasn't turned back on at all - no heat either. It is still under warranty so I am hoping I'll get a replacement when I send it to apple it's about 10 months old + water indicators have not been set off.
Any help or ideas would be appreciated I think I have tried almost everything to try to get it working.

  • My iPhone 4 shuts down by itself and doesn't turn on

I have an iPhone 4, today randomly it turned off for 2 hours, when I realized I tried to turn it on but nothing worked until I restarted it. It can't be the batter because it had 85%. Any idea for my situation??? I bought it in June.

    Hello there gilcelis99.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great steps for troubleshooting the issue you're describing:
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2802
    Particularly:
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.
