Monoprice 27" IPS Zero-G Slim on VGA

Hey Community,
I got the monitor metioned in the subject, and using MiniDisplayPort - VGA adapter to the monitor, it doesn't fill out all the way to the edge. The 1920x1080 resolution is squished horizontally, meaning everything looks skinny, and the graphics card is able to support up to 2560x1600, but I'm not even getting the 2560x1440 resolution option in the display prefs. Right now, I can only get it to look right on 1600x1200, and it's still 4:3 ratio. Anyone have any ideas?
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011) with thunderbolt; AMD Radeon HD 6490M.

Aspect Ratio Control - The screen offers only two options for aspect ratio control. These aren't listed in the OSD menu, but you can control them using the down arrow button as a quick access. There are only options to fill the screen, or to force 4:3 aspect ratios. These options are a little limited and there's no way to maintain a 16:10, 5:4 or 1:1 pixel mapping via the hardware. This probably isn't an issue for PC gaming where the graphics card is likely to be able to handle the aspect ratio control anyway. However for external devices, games consoles and Blu-ray players for instance, it may be an issue, although at least the screen is a native 16:9 format which a lot of content is nowadays.

    Hello community,
    I'm looking for help connecting my new Mac Pro (late-2013, 3 GHz 8-core, 64 gb ram, currently running OS X 10.9.5) to a 27" Monoprice IPS-ZERO-G monitor.  The monitor only has VGA and Dual-Link DVI inputs, and is supposed to support 2560x1440 native resolution.  However, when connecting either with a mini-display port to DVI adapter, or an HDMI to DVI cable, I'm only getting 1920x1080 resolution.  Any thoughts on how to get the full resolution I was hoping for?  Thanks!

    6 foot VGA cable to projector
    EPSON projector (older model)
    turn on projector
    turn on MBA
    connect VGA cable to projector
    connect VGA other end to VGA adapter
    plug in the TB end of adapter into MBA
    expected: projector seamlessly connects and resolves the resolution (this happens for windows based laptops where resolution on projector is automatically resized)
    actual result: laptop tries to connect, LCD on MBA flickers, projector is recognized by the MBA but projector display still stays in idle mode and shows nothing as if nothing is connected to the projector.
    please help, i've seen only one thread about this exactly same issue when running windows7 dualboot on mac.  updating drivers resolved this problem but there is nothing available on MBA for display updates and no other solutions have been provided. 
    Note: i was able to connect to another projector and that worked flowlessly.

    I did finally manage to resolve this. I ended up purchasing a smattering of connectors from Monoprice, and their standard Mini-DisplayPort-to-VGA connecter has connected without a hitch to every display which was previously causing trouble. Why this should work where the officially supported adapter did not, I cannot say.

  • "Mini DVI to HDMI" or "Mini DVI to VGA" to go to Samsung LN32B460 HDTV?

    I recently purchased a "DOA"/defective "Mini DVI to HDMI" converter off of ebay, and the company is making me spend the $10 to return it to China - which I'm not doing (I only paid $10 for it in the first place).
    I am wondering if I should buy another one, from a more reliable seller of course, or if I should buy the "Mini DVI to VGA" instead?
    I don't play games, so it would be mainly for playing movies and browsing the web. My display is a 32" Samsung 720p (Model LN32B460). It is has a native resolution of 1360x768, 60Hz refresh.
    Will I see a quality difference for the basic stuff that I am doing that I should get the "Mini DVI to HDMI" or will the "Mini DVI to VGA" be enough?

    I'm attempting to connect my MB to a plasma 50 inch Panasonic TV, and am about to purchase the necessary cables from www.monoprice.com.
    I've discovered so far that the HDMI connection directly between the MB and the TV (using the appropriate mini DVI adapter of course - product # 4852 at monochrome.com and an Apple HDMI cable which I'll return to get a better price at monochrome) transmits only video/pictures but not audio.
    So far, an old, short RCA (red/white) 2-way audio test cable (again using the appropriate adapter to connect to the headphone jack on the MB) does not transmit audio directly to the TV.
    1) Could audio be transmitted from the MB to the TV using a "Coax (RCA) to Optical Toslink Digital Audio Converter" (product ID # 2947 at www.monochrome.com) to connect directly to the TV (in which case, what digital audio cable would I need to connect the converter to the TV)? And if so, would it be stereo or mono?
    OR...
    2) Should I wait until I get my Onkyo surround sound system (later this week) to see if the RCA cable will transmit directly from the MB to the sound system?

    1. Which one is the more sensible choice? DVI perhaps?
    2. I hear that people are facing issues with Apple adapters nowadays. There are threads here too, talking about those issues. Should I go for 3rd party adapters instead?
    3. I have a spare DVI to VGA adapter. If I get the DVI adapter from Apple, will I be able to get VGA output using my DVI - VGA thing? Is the Apple adapter Mini DP to DVI-I. Or is it just DVI-D?

    DVI will have better image quality overall. sharper text & video. the color too will be more accurate.

    is somewhat true. others have had bad trouble, the only issues I've had is a snowy screen for a second when I switch imputs on my display between DVI & VGA as I have 2 systems plugged into it.
    try monoprice.com for the adapters.

    No, the std MDP > DVI doesn't support the analog passthru for VGA.

    13-inch MacBook Pro (Mid 2012) running 10.8.3
    Monoprice Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adaptors freeze the system (no issues with Monoprice Mini DisplayPort to DVI connected to monitor) so I tried an Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adaptor and that works ok, EXCEPT it doesnt automatically mirror to projectors like older models I have used.
    Is the 13-inch MacBook Pro (Mid 2012) supposed to auto mirror when connected to projectors using Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adaptor?

    I havent had a chance to test, yet it looks like if I create the settings for mirroring when the projector is attached to the laptop, the setting should stick moving forward..  I thought it just auto-sensed.  Will try and report back here if there are any changes or to solve the ticket...

    What is the connector you need to buy to connect Macbook 13 inch(late 2009) to a LCD projector and LCD-HD Television.

    The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody and the Late 2009 model 6,1 and Mid 2010 model 7,1 White Unibody have a Mini DisplayPort. The Early 2006 model 1,1 through Early 2008 model 4,1s plus the Early and Mid 2009 model 5,2s have Mini-DVI ports.
    To be sure which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info (and then System Report if you’re running 10.7 Lion). When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.
    If you do have the model 6,1 it will depend on what input plug you'll be using on your TV. VGA, DVI or HDMI. You'll need a Mini DisplayPort adapter and a cable from that to your TV.     If you connect the MacBook using a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter you will probably need to use external speakers or a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs connected to a stereo sound system if your TV doesn't have separate RCA input plugs or a 3.5mm stereo input plug for audio with the HDMI plug. The Mini DisplayPort to HDMI doesn't carry audio unless you have the Mid 2010 model 7,1 and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI.
    If you have the Late 2009 model 6,1 White Unibody with the Mini DisplayPort rather than the Mini-DVI there is an adapter that can combine video and audio to HDMI.

  • Is there a way to adapt my DVI/VGA monitor to Thunderbolt?

    I've recently purchased a MacBook Pro, and have been considering external monitor options. Unfortunately, the only Thunderbolt monitors out there right now are made by Apple (not unfortunate in itself), are about the size of Colorado, and cost about $1000.
    I have a recently-purchased (this past summer) Acer 17" flatscreen connected to my old MDD G4 minitower (which I'm slowly easing into retirement) and am curious to know if it's possible to adapt it to the Thunderbolt port on the MacBook Pro -- or if it's possible to adapt any similar VGA/DVI monitor? If so, what type of adapter hardware is necessary?     If your monitor has a DVI input port, you can get a Thunderbolt>DVI adapter at a reasonable price from Monoprice. Under $7 and it should work like a champ.

    Any idea of the Apple VGA to DVI adapter would work to connect a PC's VGA output to a DVI monitor?
    Is it a simple pass through?  Or are there drivers needed.

    That adapter is for connecting a VGA display to a computer's DVI-I port.  A DVI-I port has both digital and analog video pins.  The adapter passes just the analog video to a VGA connector.  It will not work in the reverse direction because a VGA computer does not provide digital video.

  • Using slim and xfce4, something crashes on exit

    I recently did a fresh install of Arch onto an older PC that I have. It's running a P4 3.06GHz, an nVidia GeForce FX 5900, and 1GB RAM. Because of the lower resources, I decided to use xfce4 and slim. I have a monitor and TV hooked up through s-video with the "seperate X screen" option. Whenever I logout of xfce (this includes, logout, reboot, shutdown), it goes to a blank black screen with a cursor at the top left and just hangs. I have slim configured to run from inittab, so it picks up after a couple seconds. However, if I run startx from console, and then logout of xfce the system just hangs and wont accept any keyboard input (including ctrl+alt+function to switch run levels). Also, if I choose to shutdown or reboot, the system will do so but the only thing I see is the blank screen until the POST. If I do a startx from console, the logout, I'm able to ssh in from my laptop, login and issue a reboot (again the screen doesn't change until the POST). Also, if I turn the "seperate x screen" option off, and just run the desktop on the monitor, it doesn't freeze. I've worked my way through a number of issues so far, but this one has me completely stumped. I'm not sure if there's something wrong with my configuration or if it's just a problem with the graphics driver. Any advice and/or help is greatly appreciated.

    I recently did a fresh install of Arch onto an older PC that I have. It's running a P4 3.06GHz, an nVidia GeForce FX 5900, and 1GB RAM. Because of the lower resources, I decided to use xfce4 and slim. I have a monitor and TV hooked up through s-video with the "seperate X screen" option. Whenever I logout of xfce (this includes, logout, reboot, shutdown), it goes to a blank black screen with a cursor at the top left and just hangs. I have slim configured to run from inittab, so it picks up after a couple seconds. However, if I run startx from console, and then logout of xfce the system just hangs and wont accept any keyboard input (including ctrl+alt+function to switch run levels). Also, if I choose to shutdown or reboot, the system will do so but the only thing I see is the blank screen until the POST. If I do a startx from console, the logout, I'm able to ssh in from my laptop, login and issue a reboot (again the screen doesn't change until the POST). Also, if I turn the "seperate x screen" option off, and just run the desktop on the monitor, it doesn't freeze. I've worked my way through a number of issues so far, but this one has me completely stumped. I'm not sure if there's something wrong with my configuration or if it's just a problem with the graphics driver. Any advice and/or help is greatly appreciated.

  • KVM VGA-Passthrough using the new vfio-vga support in kernel = 3.9

    This is intented for people who wish to pass-through a GPU to a virtual machine using the KVM hypervisor, QEMU and vfio-pci
    NOTE: AMD RADEON 5xxx, 6xxx, 7xxx, 2xx and NVIDIA GEFORCE 7, 8, 4xx, 5xx, 6xx, 7xx 9xx have been reported working with this, passing though an intel IGD is not supported YET

    At this moment there are two ways to achieve this using KVM: legacy VGA via Seabios or non-VGA (UEFI) via OVMF
    The main practical advantage of using OVMF is that on intel systems you no longer need the i915 VGA arbiter patch which also disables DRI on the host

    AMD-VI/VT-D enabled and working (On intel systems both your MB and you CPU must support it, to find out if you CPU has VT-D support go here: http://ark.intel.com/, you also need to boot with intel_iommu=on to enable it)
    At least 2 GPU's, one primary boot device and the card you wish to pass-through

    Aditional kernel patches might be required if you're using an Intel CPU: ACS override patch and i915 VGA arbiter patch, you can find a kernel package with these patches included on AUR: linux-vfio
    Aditional requirements for OVMF:
    An UEFI compatible GPU (Most modern gpus support this, SEE: Does my graphics card ROM support EFI?
    An UEFI compatible GUEST (ex: Windows 7 and up)
    OVMF:  Gerd Hoffmann's rpms or OVMF-svn from AUR
    If you're building your kernel manually this option is required:

    Preparing your System
    On intel system the i915 VGA arbiter patch is required if:

    kvm=off will hide the kvm hypervisor signature, this is required for NVIDIA cards, since its driver will refuse to work on an hypervisor and result in Code 43 on windows (unless you're using a QUADRO)
    x-vga=on is required for vga assignment
    -vga none disables the default vga device on QEMU, it is also required for vga assignment
    You should see a black qemu window on your main display, and seabios/ovmf ouput on your monitor from your passthru'd card saying it cant find anything to boot
    If you're using an intel cpu and nothing happens try this:

    NOTE: There might be some problems using nvidia/fglrx/nouveau drivers on the host gpu, see the ISSUES section below on how to solve this

  • VGA cable no longer working with IOS8

    VGA cable that I have (that used to always work), no longer works with ANY projector.  Either get zero recognition or popup saying it "doesn't support that application".  It is an Apple VGA cable.  Thoughts?  Thank you....

    Other folks have reported problems with older cables when using 8.x.  You can wait and see if apple eventually fixes or go to an apple store and buy a new cable.  Got to get the latest firmware on the cable. You could buy apple tv or chromecast ( more difficult to configure ).

  • Godane's Archlinux boot from hard disk but it can't login in with slim

    I download Godane's archiso-live-2009-09-24.iso , i havent cdrom , so i boot it from hard disk .
    I extract iso to drive C: (fat32) ,two folder is "boot" "archiso-live"
    my menu.lst  is :

    The iso can be boot from hd ,but there isnt slim . only is console...
    what can i do with this problem??

    I think your problem is that load=overlay.lzm is in the wrong place.
    Here is what i should look like:

    I use 'from' boot option so i can boot from my hard drive more easier. The way its booted above is for 2009-12-08 version of my archiso-live. Just thought you should know.

  • DV port to VGA or HDMI

    Today I bought a cable that was supposed to go from the dv port on my MacBook to HDMI, but when I got it home I found it to be a mini dv plug, smaller than the port on my '08 MacBook. Nobody seems to stock cables that fit this larger dv port; I tried Maplin, PC World, Curry's, no luck. An adaptor to VGA, or straight to HDMI, either is fine. Any suggestions?

    If you have the Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody you'll need a Mini DisplayPort adapter and a cable from that to your TV.     If you connect the MacBook using a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter you will probably need to use external speakers or a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs connected to a stereo sound system if your TV doesn't have separate RCA input plugs or a 3.5mm stereo input plug for audio with the HDMI plug. The Mini DisplayPort to HDMI doesn't carry audio unless you have the Mid 2010 model 7,1 and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI.
    With the Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody there is an adapter that uses the Mini DisplayPort and a USB port to combine video and audio to HDMI. It's only 2 channel stereo not 5.1 Dolby Surround.
