Monster DVI Cable to wide to use on Mac Pro

Since the DVI connectors are closer in the Mac Pro than the Power Mac Dual G4, what brand extender cables will fit side by side?
Are there pigtail extenders available anywhere?
Should I just grind off the excess housing?
I upgraded from my Dual G4 to the 2006 model Power Mac. When I went to hook up the Monster Cable DVI400-4M DVI-D Video Cables they will not fit side by side, the housing extruded too much beyond the screw in pin.
Thanks for your input.

Hi-
There should have been a DVI to DVI adapter that shipped with the Mac Pro.
One end is smaller, specifically for this type of situation.
If you don't have one, it's this one:

  • Can I use old Mac Pro with new iMac?

I have a Mac Pro (Pre 2007) running on 10.6.8 that is ok for now, but experiencing some degradation in performance. I have 4 drive bays full and memory maxed out. I am looking for a desktop solution that would allow the option to have the latest OSX (such as the latest iMac) and access this old Mac Pro still. Is this possible?
If so, what are some of the caveats?
SoftwareEx: CS6 is compatible with new OSX, but will files saved on new computer still be accessible on old computer?
    Access to files
NetworkCurrently using older version of Airport Extreme for home office setup
Any insights would be helpful! I hate the thought of this old workhorse turning into nothing more than an external hard drive, but it is not upgradable to the new operating system.

It sounds like what you want to do is create a simple peer network so you can use the Mac Pro as a storage unit.
This is easy to do, just connect the two with an ethernet cable and log on using the logon and password for the system you want to access. In the general case, this is a bad idea since you you have unrestricted access but you own both machines so security is a very low priority.
    Caveats:
The OS version will determine what apps a machine can run.
Data is just data as long as both systems use HSF+ or some other common file system.
Airport may or may not work... but a hard wire will always get it done and transfers data a lot faster.
You almost never get to have it ALL your way when mixing generations of systems, but if you keep it simple it works well. I've had a peer network with 4-6 systems running in my house since the turn of the century. Most Macs support 1000 baseT (gigabit ether) so data transfers up to 80-90MB/sec are easy.

  • 2 Users simultaneously using a mac pro

I'm not sure this is the correct forum for this, but here is what i'd like to achieve: Have 2 users each with their own keyboard and monitor using one mac pro tower... i know they can run multiple monitors, but what about 2 keyboards and users... this is doable on most other unix based systems ive used in the past (sgi irix and suns).
    Any ideas?

When I call someone using FaceTime from my mac, they can see me but not hear me. Is there something I need to do to make this happen? I also have an iPad 2 and FaceTime works great on it if I call somebody. Why no sound from my mac FaceTime using a mac pro and isight camera, mike combo.
If I use google it works. If I use Ichat, it works. If I use skype it works.

This sounds like something similar to https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3388112?start=105&tstart=0.
Try turning down the speak volume (System Preferences->Sound->Output->Output Volume)  or the microphone gain (System Preferences->Sound->Input->Input Volume). Do this on both sides of the call.

  • I am thinking of using a Mac pro for share trading. Can anyone share their experience and suggest specs for 30 -40 monitors etc

    Hi
I am thinking of using a Mac Pro for share trading.
I am proposing to start small but want to be able to expand up to 30+ monitors.
    It must be super quick.
Any help with hardware would be appreciated.
Software is secondary at this point , but open to advice.
I have an iphone and ipad so feel it will better intergrate usung Apple
    regards
    David

There is no desktop machine that I know of that will support 30+ monitors as is.
Fill the 3 or 4 PCIe slots of any logic board with three port graphics cards and you have the physical cap without additional hardware.
Software is secondary at this point
No, without software, how can you control more than the monitor limit of the OS?
How can you set up the monitors to display the various programs that you will wish to use simultaneously?
    Software is a major consideration.
Matrox (and others) have solutions for additional monitors beyond the physical capabilities of generally offered graphics cards.
The caveat here, however, is support software is typically reserved for Windows and Linux systems.
Matrox has a single 8 display card:
    http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/graphics_cards/m_series/m9188pciex16/
Matrox has solutions specifically targeting the finance market:
    http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/solutions/trading_analyst/
Though the Mac Pro has more than adequate processing power, I think that you will find (through research) that building a solid machine capable of using several multi monitor cards is going to be what you will need to support more than 8-10 monitors with conventionally offered hardware.
    Fun stuff:

Hi, I'm using a Mac Pro here. I am trying to connect it with my NAS hard drive. But i could not connect to it because i have an ethernet which connects to the intranet in my company and Air Port for the internet and it could not detect the the ip address after i input the correct address on "Connect to Server" window. Please help! Urgent! Thanks

I did not say it is not possible.
I said if your company networks are monopolizing both ports, you should talk to them about what options are available.
Maybe you can get the company Intranet over wireless if you change some configuration items such as Subnet Mask.
Maybe you can get on the Internet over Ethernet.
You really need to ask them, and do not let them blow you off because you have a Mac. If they balk, ask them how it would be done on a PC (becasue it will be the same on a Mac).

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Do you keep your data backed up?
If not, you should always do so*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
You never know when a hard drive or a directory might go bad.  Having a bootable clone is a must.
That link also shows you some tools you can use to recover data.
If you aren't backed up, try buying those tools first, before attempting to repair the directory.
Directory issues can be fixed with these tools*:

  • Using a Mac Pro w / Apple Internal Hardware RAID Card?

Anyone using a Mac Pro with a Apple Hardware RAID Card 2010?
    ( I have a 12 Core )
Is it worth the $600-700 ?
How much faster than the software RAID 0?
I see Hamm's RAID tips chart .. but it doesn't include such options .. plus it is based on a PC system.
Any tips would be great ..
I find many areas where the application is slow / unresponsive .. and I'm not sure where the bottleneck is ... Maybe the hardware RAID will solve it?
I'm really am impressed with CS5 .. it would be even better with some adjustments .. but I am absolutely disappointed with sluggish performance on my top-of-the-line Mac Pro 12 Core.
This is not what I expected for a $8,000 machine.
Some users says that the port of CS5 for the Mac has taken a back seat to the Windows version at Adobe.
I can't imagine that Adobe would not put 100% effort into Mac products.
    Go Team!!!

I have a 2009 Mac Pro 3.33GHz Quad core w/ Apple RAID card, 16GB RAM from OWC, and Apple's Radeon HD 5870 GPU.
I have RAID 0 set across 3x1TB drives internally, and the standard 640GB drive for OSX and all program files. I set all video assets, renders, previews and such on the 3TB RAID.
This seems to work wonderfully. I built this system specifically to edit a feature film shot on P2 DVCProHD, and I've been impressed with how it handles it. This was all built prior to CS5, which took me by surprise. Had I known nVidia would become such a problem for Apple, I would have built a PC, but that's another story.
I just started a new project in CS5 on the same system, this time using H.264 video from my Nikon D7000, and so far, it seems to play just as nicely, despite not having hardware acceleration via CUDA technology. Yellow bars on top, even. I haven't had any problems with clips taking a long time to populate on the timeline or any of that, so perhaps the RAID card helps there.
All this aside, I've already decided to upgrade my RAID for another reason. Right now, my backup is performed via an eSATA-connected external drive through a PCI eSATA card. After every edit session, I dump everything on the RAID onto the external drive, and it goes much faster than the old FW800 transfer used to. I'm about to replace my Apple RAID card with an Areca card and set up a 4-bay RAID 3 via an SAS connection. This will allow for excellent data throughput while offering more security than my current RAID 0 / manual backup system, and free up the internal drives for backups, exports and render files.
I believe in hardware RAID, but I'm not as knowledgeable as Harm and others are about it. I had my Mac built to order with the Apple RAID card, so I have no experience using Premiere with a software RAID. Due to my smooth experience using it, I think it was worth it, but plenty of people say the Apple RAID card is rubbish, and to go with Areca or Atto cards. I didn't know about them until after I built my system, and even though it will cost a couple thousand to upgrade my RAID from this point, I expect to have an even better system than I already have.
I hope this helps, and feel free to ask any questions I didn't address.

How to restart base station from airport utility? I used to be able to do it remotely
I currently use a Mac Pro 10.8.4 and have a time machine for wireless 6.3 (630.34). Sometimes I cannot connect to the internet and use network preferences to diagnose the issue. This results in being told to restart the wireless. The airport utility includes the drop down option of restarting but is not clickable so I can't choose it.
With my prior macbook and same time capsule, etc  if i had problems connecting to the internet I would run network diagnostics to help out. This included clicking on the airport utility ---> base station --> restart. This worked most of the time.
Bottom line, is there something I am missing in not being able to restart the wi-fi remotely? ]
    Thanks in advance

You are likely forgetting a step.
    Open AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon
Click Edit in the small window that appears
Now click the Base Station menu.....top of the screen....not the Base Station "tab" in the center of the screen
    Click Restart

Appreciate your support and if possible , how to do this?

If you want to work with Mac OS X, you need one computer per simultaneous user.
What you are describing, " Multiple simultaneous logins to a single computer" is not avialable on a regular Mac of any description, unless you decide to use Unix tools instead of Mac OS X.
Server will happily store files for many, many users and provide them to multiple (up to hundreds) of computers at "near hard Drive" speeds over Gigabit Ethernet. It can make the File Sharing part easy.

No. Ownership of an Apple product does not give you the right to use their trademarked and copyrighted logos. From their licensing information:

  • Can I use a mac pro operating system disk to upgrade a macbook

I need to upgrade my 10.5.8 system to 10.6 before I can upgrade to Lion. I have a mac pro operating system disk for 10.6 can I use this?

No. The gray-colored restore DVDs provided with a Mac are not the retail OS version. They contain only the drivers applicable for the purchased hardware, and the installer has a function to verify the hardware is of the type the disk was created for. If you attempt to use the Mac Pro restore disk on a different model Mac, it will simply refuse to install.

USB drive with install image is showing in Startup Manager on a Mac Pro, but wont boot. Showing circle with cross strip, and shut down automatically. USB device are made and work on two different MacBook Pro, but used on Mac Pro. Any help?

OS X installers have always been fairly specific, hardware-wise. I haven't read anything reflecting that situation with the Recovery HD, so it may be that the Recovery HD created for the MacBook Pro does not have the necessary drivers for the Mac Pro. Obviously, nothing definitive here, but a possibility.

  • Can a Windows PC HD be erased using my Mac Pro?

I have an older Windows PC that I want to clean for recycling.  I would like to use my Mac pro to do that job, and then hopefully
also clean an Imac that barely is usable (it runs but has to use the Windows monitor.  Can any one advise on this, Please????
    Thanks in advance.
    Tom_______

Let's sort this out. You have a PC you plan to chuck out and want to use your Mac Pro desktop computer from Apple to erase the PC's drive so your info doesn't leak out of your control. You also want to do something similar to the drive on an iMac desktop computer. And you want us, on the MacBook Pro portables forum, to help you.
After pointing out that there are Mac Pro specific forums here...
Yes, you can take the drive out of the PC, stick it in an empty bay on the Mac, then use Disk Utility to do a Security Erase and wipe it clean. Just be sure that both computers are OFF before putting or pulling drives from them. If Disk Utility does not offer an Erase option, select the DEVICE corresponding to the PC's drive, go to the Partition tab and select 1 Partition in the Partitions tab. That will cause the drive to be repartitioned and be erasable again. This happens if the drive is in NTFS format, which OS X cannot write to.
As for the iMac, no need to take the drive out to erase. Restart in Recovery Mode (Command R prior to the startup chime) and use the Disk Utility there to erase the Macintosh HD volume, then Install OS X from scratch.
For more specific details, refer to the Mac Pro and iMac forums.
