Month view colors in iCal 5 vs iCal 4

I have a MacBook running 10.7.4 and a iMac running 10.6.8.  I just found out a way (http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20111014102515403) to see my shared calendar on iCloud from the older iCal app on the iMac and was astounded at the differences in the two versions of iCal and how they looked side-by-side, looking at the exact same data.  The colors on the older versionof iCal are far superior to the Lion's version.  I have read many threads concerning dissatisfaction with the new iCal and requesting Apple development folks to fix it.  Let me add my voice to the thundering crowd!

The whole idea of the color scheme is to be able to tell what category an event is. Like Alasdair mentioned, I have several calendars for home, work, school, etc... Then you can filter your calendar by unchecking those you don't need to look at. Only interested in your work schedule? uncheck the other calendars and you will only see the appointments for the calendar selected. Even if all are checked, the colors of the appointments make it easier to tell what you are looking at.
The one thing I wish is that there could be an integrated published calendar to the net, so when I have to look at my whole schedule on the internet when I am away from my machine, I don't have to open all my different calendars separately.
Hope this helps!

  • IPhone calendar month view not the same as iCal

I have my iCal on my MacBook & iCloud set so that the start day of the week in Monday. This means that in the Month view Monday is the 1st column with the week-end, Sat & Sun columns on the right side of the screen. However, on my iPhone4 the 1st column is Sunday, follwed by Mon - Saturday.
Is there a way of changing th esettings on my iPhone so that the calendars look the same as on my Macbook (or iCloud)?

    Hi Brian,
On iOS this is taken from the Regional Format option in Settings > General > International. Mine is set to United Kingdom and Calendar.app has the week start as Monday. There may be other results of changing this setting.
    Best wishes

  • ICal Mini-Month View question

    A quick question.
Using iCal on Leopard...I noticed the mini-month view doesn't show any marks on it for days that have events. I seem to remember a little dot on the days, in Tiger. Or am I just spoilt looking at the month view on the iPhone, or iPod Touch?
Is there anyway of having it have little dots or halos or anything to indicate when I have an event on a certain day in the mini-month view?

Last thing about iCal which I think could be fixed, is that it would be easier to type down events and making line-breaks if one whouldn't have to hold 'Alt' in while doing it.  I make line-breaks much more often than I finish editing an event (in which case you just press enter or click outside the event you were editing).  It would be better to press 'alt' + 'enter' in order to finish editing an event, and reserve the action of just pressing 'enter' for line-breaks.  This, btw, was also this way in iCal 4.
Ok, last last thing: in the preferences of iCal one can add a default alert to all new timed events and invitations and one can specify how many minutes before one wants to be alerted.  I do not want to add a default alert to all new events/appointments, but I would like to be able to specify the default number of minutes put on all new alerts that I put on events.  It seems quite intuitive to me that the default number of minutes one can specify for every alarm added to events by defult (if that option is checked in the preferences), should be the defult number of minutes set to alarms one manually puts on events, in stead of the '15 minutes before' default that is in the system and which seems to be unchangable.
If it says '0 minutes before the start time' there, then all alerts that I manually put on events should have this value put to zero by default!

  • ICal monthly view 12 hour v 24 hour display

How do I get time displayed as (for example) 7.20am showing on Monthly view in iCal on Lion.  It shows in the event but not on Monthly view.

    JEG,
Do you have iCal>Preferences...>General>"Show Event Times" selected?
Additionally, go to System Preferences...>Language & Text>Formats>Region: and set/re-set your "Region.'

  • Can I show a color bar instead of a color bullet in iCal Monthly view for all my events in all calendars?

In the Monthly view of iCal the only events that show a color bar in the event is the Birthday Calendar. All other events in all my other calendars only show a color bullet next to the event (unless I click on that event which then shows as a color bar). I would like to know if it is possible for all the calendar events to have a color bar in the monthly view instead of just that tiny color bullet.

    Greetings Judith,
Before making any attempts at deleting calendar data, backup what you have just in case:
Click on each calendar on the left hand side of iCal one at a time highlighting it's name and then going to File Export > Export and saving the resulting calendar file to a logical location for safekeeping.
iCal has an automated function located in iCal > Preferences > Advanced > Delete events "X" days after they have passed.  By typing in a value for days you can tell iCal to delete all events before that time frame.
    Example:
    Today is 4-16-2012.
If I wanted to delete all events prior to 1 year ago (4-16-2011) I would type in "365" for the number of days.
Once you type in the number of days you want kept in iCal, close the preferences and then quit iCal.
Re-open iCal and check to see if the events are gone.  If not you may want to leave it open for several minutes and then quit again.
Once the events are removed go back to  iCal > Preferences > Advanced > Delete events "X" days after they have passed and make sure the check mark is removed to prevent future deletion.
    Hope that helps.

  • ICal year view colors

Is there a way to change the color of the calendar events when you are viewing the calendar in the Year View?
My wife and I both share each other's calendars. Her color is blue and mine is orange in the daily/weekly/monthly views it shows up with the corresponding colors. Yet, when I click on the year view I get this:
I can understand the days where we both have events listed being a different color, but it should at least display blue for the days that have events for her calendar and orange for mine but that's not the case. Any way to fix this? Or can someone explain to me why it shows these colors instead?

Anyone got any latest news update of this?
It makes absolutely no sense to me and makes year view poinless. I can't see multiple events.
I can't believe how awfully regressive iCal is to be honest. It's not the mainstay of what I do but every time I use it I end up saying, "why the **** won't it let me do that?" or "why have they done THAT?"
It's out of character with all the other Mac software that has always been useful and completely intuitive. ICal has been an orphan child for years and this Lion update has just papered over the cracks for me.
How about allowing scrolling from one month to the next? How about running the months of the year into each other, especially  in year view? We don't make a big distinction between 30th June and 1st July in real life so why treat then as a separate page and block them out? It's so frustrating it makes me angry.
I suppose it's like the arguments I used to have with PC users years ago. Yes it does everything, but it's not much fun doing it and fun has always been the Mac way.
Come on Apple, look into this. It's not 3D modelling. It's a bloody calendar!

  • ICal - Week/Month View Changes

    Hi there,
I recently moved my (small) company from a very ancient version of Now Up To Date (with server) to iCal with iCal server. Most of the people working here are pretty unsavvy tech wise and they don't like it one bit! The main issue seems to stem from the week view in iCal.
Basically, what the users here preferred from NUTD was a landscape week view with the event written line by line not blocked out. The problem wit the block style view iCal does by default is if there's more than one event at one time it is very tricky to see.
The month view is the style they want but there isn;t enough room per day. I can't seem to find anyway to make this view possible. Is there a way or an ical extension i can install?
    Thanks
    Ben

Okay, I figured out a simple remedy that was probably always intended by Apple. I had been pasting long text paragraphs from emails into the 'Subject' Header. When I paste the long paragraph of information in the "NOTES" area at the bottom of the dialogue box and just put a brief subject line in the header area this fixes the problem.
This might seem like common sense, but Palm Desktop did not require this. I figured this out by trying Entourage. Entourage synching with the iPhone however works through iCal and deleted all my color coded Calendars that I had not backed up. In Palm Desktop I had 15 categories each with a color code.
Now, when I put an address into the "Location" window why can't I tap that on the iPhone Calendar and have the GPS/Googlemap display this location on a map?

  • ICal and a BB8700 (v4.1) Month view?

I'd love to be able to see "Week" and "Month" views of my calendar on the Blackberry. I loved this option on my old Palm, and iCal is an easy enough transition, but I can't seem to find any view options on the handheld.
Is this somthing a Media card would help with? IS there even such a thing as a media card for an 8700? I've had it over a year now, but I only use it as a phone and for contact lists / calendar-sync with my Mac G4  (OS-X 10.4).
IS there a handy tutorial out there in the world I could get ahold of to help with these sorts of questions?
    Any help is appreciated!

    Snags40,
The "Today" highlighting feature in iCal is not user selectable, and admittedly dim. The only things that have improved the visibility for me have been to change the angle at which I view the screen, and by choosing a different color profile in System Preferences...>Displays>Color>Display Profile: Uncheck "Show profiles for this display only," and choose a different profile, or you can also use the "Calibrate..." selection to choose a user specified profile for your screen.

  • ICal:  How to hIghlight today in month view?

In the iCal 'month view' is there a setting to have it hIghlight the current day? I had been using Palm Desktop for years and found that feature useful for directing my eyes to the current day.

  • ICal's month view events are spilling out and overlapping making unreadable

iCal's month view events are spilling out of their day boxes and overlapping the events below them making it impossible to look at the month view and discern one's schedule.
What's really odd is it only seems really a problem with the current month. January 2009.
What can I do to remedy this situation?

  • Mini Month View in iCal

Can't say I like the new iCal running on Lion. One feature that I can't seem to find is the mini month view. I did away with my paper calendar for viewing full months because of the mini month calendars on my Macs.
Is that functionality gone? I've searched preferences and menus and can't find a way to turn it on.
So many things about this new iCal that I find I do not like. I sure hope updates are coming to fix it.

  • Is there a way to get iCal to put the time of each event on Monthly view without going in and editing each event?

When I enter a new event on iCal with the time, it leaves the time off of the Monthly view and in order for me to glance at the times of the day's events I have to click on each event or go into the event and edit it again putting the time on, for it to show.  Is there a way to get it to show without doing this?

Sorry.  Only after posting did I see that this question has been asked already and the answer given.  Please ignore this post.

The paths won't agree on the two OSs so a simple XML import isn't likely to work.
See Sync iPod/iPad/iPhone with two computers and, if needed, Make a split library portable. The techniques in the first link will work when moving the library between Windows and OS X as long as the library is "portable", but iTunes takes quite some time checking the database when the library is opened under a different OS.

  • In Ical (OS 10.4.10)  Month view

When in ical, the day and week view display but as soon as I click on month view the calendar disappears. Any ideas>

    mkaff,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Very often iCal display anomalies can be rectified by refreshing your iCal plist file. This can be accomplished by quitting iCal and dragging the com.apple.iCal.plist file which is located in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder to the Desktop. Then log out/in or restart and check iCal for normal behavior. You can delete the iCal plist file on your Desktop.
    Let us know what happens.
