Montior/display calibration for photography?

What is the best way to go about calibrating my MacBook display to give me accurate color representation while working with my photographs? When I get them printed, they don't look as good as they do on my screen.
All the tutorials for monitor calibration for photography purposes I can find have been for Windows.
Thanks in advance for any help,
Dave

Hi Dave.
Well, if you want to get really professional, a good idea is to buy some calibrating hardware. Pantone's Huey does a really nice job according to MacAddict magazine (now Mac l Life magazine).
http://www.electronics-batteries.com/digitalcamera_accessories_pantonemeu101.htm
If you want to go the "free" route, you can generally calibrate the display through the displays system preferences pane in System Preferences. Just click on the "displays" pane and then click on the color tab. You can then create a custome color profile by following the on-screen instructions.
Hope this helps.

  • My Mac Pro display setup for photography

I am a photographer and a recent refugee from Windows. I’m using my new Mac Pro to manage and process about 100K images and other digital assets. I’m especially pleased with my system’s display configuration. Here is what I’ve got:
I’m driving my displays with the NVIDIA GT 120. My main image viewing display is a 21” Eizo Color Edge LCD (CE210W). It has a wide color gamut and is more than adequate for my needs. I wanted a second display but was leery of the Apple Cinema units – a lot of comments on this forum and other places seemed to indicate a lack of quality control. Nevertheless, I got the 24” Apple Cinema Display and it is working perfectly.
I calibrated both units with the i1 Display 2 monitor calibration hardware. I ran the i1 Match software for calibrating the Apple display and the Eizo-supplied software for calibrating the Eizo (it stores calibration settings in the monitor’s hardware).
Opinions about monitor calibration settings are like belly buttons – everybody has one. Here are mine:
    white point – 6500 K; gamma – 2.2; luminance – 120 CD sq. m.
With both monitors calibrated using these settings, my standard reference image looks practically identical on both units. That is reassuring.
I do not doubt that some people are having problems with the Apple Cinema display. But mine is working perfectly… so far. It is an essential component of a very nice system.
BTW, if you want to hook a 24” Cinema Display to a Mac Pro then you will probably need a display cable extension (Apple picked a curious way to cut costs). I got my cable extension at MonoPrice.com for $6.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. Back up all data before you go.

  • Colour Calibration for 24" iMac and setting up an ICC profile

    Hi,
Can anyone recommend a way for calibrating the display of a 24" iMac (not too expensive)? I will mainly be using Photoshop, Aperture and web browsing (I do not need for business, but like to have the best set up possible).
Also, on a similar note, can anyone suggest a cost effective way of getting an ICC profile for use with Photoshop (CS2) and Aperture for an HP Photosmart 3210 please?
    Thanks

    Hi Kevin
As your based in the UK feel free to contact me with regards to obtaining display profiles for your 24" iMac, and possibly output profiles for your printer.
We are hoping to add a 24" iMac (or should that be BigMac to our studio as a training machine and backup to our other Macs in the very near future. As soon as we get our machine it will only be a day or so before I get it profile and I would be quite willing to email you a copy of our screen profile free of charge for you to test, this should get you pretty good results.
As part of our business we carry out colour management training and that obviously includes creating colour profiles. We use a Gretag i1 Pro to calibrate and profile our screens to a very high level so I think it may be worth you giving me a call soon. Feel free to call me on 01773 717446 or email me at [email protected]

My translucent CRT Apple Studio Display is with internal HW ColorSync calibration equipped.
In Tiger i have in Color tab buttons for Gamma, White Point, Ambient Light, Calibration and Profile. In Leopard is only Profile and manual calibration.
Automatic HW calibration for CRT Studio Display is no more supported in Leopard?

  • Calibrate monitor for photography

    Hi,
I am trying to calibrate my macbook pro 17 inch monitor for photography. Is there any software doing it automatic? I have heard of spyder3 but it looks to me that you put a tool on the screen. Is there any other ways avoiding that? I also have done my computer one from display and putting everything  in to the middle not shore is that corect.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Share same display calibration

I just got two Dell LCD monitors and I calibrated one of them using Apple's display calibration and saved it. For some reason the calibration doesn't show up in the other displays lists of choices. How can I get it to share the exact same calibration?

Have you tried restarting then trying again?

  • What Mac Pro specs should I consider for photography?

After years of putting up with various pc configurations, I've decided to take the plunge and go over to a Mac Pro system.
I have up to £4000 to invest on a system to use primarily for my work as a photographer. But which areas should I concentrate on when configuring my set-up? Given that Photoshop seems happy to suck up as much memory and processing power as one can throw at it, a sizeable amount of RAM and a decent speed of processor appears obvious. But how much RAM and what size processor, bearing in mind that my image file sizes are usually around the 300Mb mark and often go as high as 700Mb when containing unflattened layers? These file sizes have rendered my supposed powerful Dell to performing at a snails pace. Also, what else should I consider in my configuration?
My image library is stored on a separate drive, so I could probably live with a reduced hard drive capacity if necessary.
Incidentally, I am far from being a computer boffin, so I'd appreciate advice which isn't overly technical.
    Thanks in advance.

I'm in the UK and I use my Mac Pro for Video and Photography and I've had a few Mac Pro's getting to my ideal solution. If you are only using it for Photography I think you would be fine with 8Gb of RAM but if you fill out all 8 slots with 2Gb modules from Crucial it's not too bad to go to 16Gb. My advice would be to run the Mac Pro on a large Western Digital Caviar Black (their quickest) such as the 2Tb model. Then, I'd invest in a Tempo SATA card so you can purchase either a Drobo or a Hive for your Vault for Aperture so you have total peace of mind with your data. Display wise, just buy an Apple 30" Cinema before they replace it with a glossy version. They are absolutely superb for Video and Photography but beware, if they go wrong and they are in the bin, so buy AppleCare immediately. I've listed my setup below with where to buy and costs in UK pounds. Good luck and enjoy.
Mac Pro 8-core with the 8Gb upgrade from Apple as that will give you 4x2Gb allowing you to not have to bin the 6x1Gb's you would get as standard. Then also add the ATI Radeon HD 4870. Should come to £2798.00 inc. VAT.
Western Digital 2Tb Caviar Black (eBuyer, http://www.ebuyer.com/product/173388) for £173.86
Sonnet Tempo SATA E4P Serial ATA Host Adaper (Cancom, http://www.cancomuk.com/Brand/Sonnet/Product/59673?_Sonnet-Tempo-SATA-E4P-Serial-ATA-Host-Adapter-for-PCI-Express-(TSATAII-E4P)-TSATAII-E4P&ref=5681a404afd60a8d) for £232.00
    Apple Aperture 3 (Jigsaw, http://www.jigsaw24.com/product-details/mb957za/apple-aperture-3-web-updatable-t o-3.0.3) for £119.00
    Hive 4Tb Raid (Give's 2.8Tb of SAFE storage) (Cancom, http://www.cancomuk.com/Brand/Hive/Product/66109?_Hive-4TB-RAID-(4x1TB-drives)-5002) for £716.00
Apple 30" Cinema Display (Jigsaw, http://www.jigsaw24.com/product-details/m9179ba/apple-30-cinema-display) for £1115.08
All the prices are inclusive of the dreaded VAT so if you are VAT registered you can save. I would say that with Aperture 3 you need full Photoshop less than ever, I'd consider Elements to start with to save some cash. You could also look at a Drobo instead of the Hive but we bought both in our office and the Drobo is painfully slow in comparison to the Hive and the Hive uses a dedicated Hardware RAID where the Drobos use a software version and I've heard some horror stories from Drobo owners.

  • Thunderbolt display calibration factory profile not found

Hi, I have recently got a Thunderbolt display (attached to Mac Mini) and have opened the 'Thunderbolt Display' preferences tab and have noticed that under 'color' the setting was 'sRGB IE61966-2.1' rather than 'Display' or 'Thunderbolt Display' - is this normal and if not what should the default be?
Also when I hit the 'calibrate...' button 'Display Calibrator' states that 'The Factory profile for the display could not be found' and when I enter 'ColorSync Utility' it states that:
    /Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Displays/Display-756E6B6E-7669-7274-0000-000041DC9D0 1.icc
Tag 'cprt': Text tag has an incorrect length.
The file is locked. Could not be fixed.
When I go to the folder and try to unlock the file by going to 'Get Info' it doesn't state that the file is locked.
I also have Adobe CS5.5 installed so maybe that's installed some different ICC profiles?
Help please community, I'm pretty much a noob to this.
    Thanks

Don't feel bad. You are certainly not the first person to make that mistake and it is equally certain you will not be the last.

  • Display Calibrator Assistant: Too Blue?

Just brought home my third MBP, after swapping the second for the vertical lines issue.
I'm attempting to calibrate the display, but I'm running into problems with the Display Calibrator Assistant.
In Expert Mode, the luminance boxes don't give me enough adjustability to gray the image. The brightness box (left) is fine, but the color box (right) only has shades of blue. The bottom of the box is still slightly blue, and there's never a point at which it adjusts into yellow.
Net result, any Expert Mode calibration comes out overly blue-tinted. Non-Expert Mode is actually more accurate, just setting the native calibration to 2.2 gamma.
I'm pretty sure this isn't just perception. I kept a grayscale up, and you could see some blocks were yellow and some were blue, because the adjustability wasn't there to smooth the color curve properly across all the various luminances.
Anyone seen this? Anyone know a way around it, or an alternate (free) ICS creator? I'm not going to spring for a Spyder3, but I get a little concerned when the hardware doesn't work with the software--seems like in Apple's world, that means something might be out of whack.

Yeah, I'm aware of the danger here, but I'm pretty sure this isn't falling under perception. The range on the color side of the calibrator goes from extremely blue to just a little blue. The laptop itself is producing much warmer grays outside the calibrator, just not inside it. My desktop screen is also calibrator (Windows, using Adobe Gamma), so I have an independent reference point.
If I crank the right side of the calibrator down to "just a little blue" at each luminance level (which is the closest I can get the apple to match, even though it's still bluer than the background), I can see the problem in the ICS file.
The color curves on the resultant profile show dips for the other colors, and a straight diagonal line for blue. This corresponds with an extreme amount of blue push in the display, where the other colors are dropped out in the midranges and blue is not.
In other words, this doesn't come down to a "by-eye" thing. The calibrator itself does not have enough adjustability to make the foreground apple match the background target.

  • MacBook (6-bit) display OK for Photoshop?

I currently have a 1.67GHz PowerBook G4, but will most likely get myself a MacBook within a year to replace it, running Photoshop CS3 (or more likely CS4 when it arrives) as a student of photography.
A few weeks ago I came across some disturbing reading on the web: while Apple says that their laptops can all display "millions" (24 bits) of colors it has been revealed that this is not so and they can in reality only display 262 144 colors (18 bits) because their displays are of the cheap 6-bit type instead of 8-bit. Here's a site that describes the problem in more detail: http://peewaiweb.free.fr/
This might not pose a problem for most people, but how does it affect professional use, such as with Photoshop?
I've always had desktop computers in the past, but bought my first laptop 3 years ago and haven't looked back since. But paying a premium price for an Apple laptop which has a "cheap" display which isn't capable of delivering the goods seems pretty unfair to me.
The big question is: is it good *enough*? Good enough for photography use with Photoshop that is.
PS: as far as I know, MacBooks and MacBook Pro computers are fully able to display images with 16.7 million colors at once, but the built-in display isn't. If you attach an external display I believe you get a true 24-bit image, but then you're no longer looking at a "portable system", and you've forked out so much money already that you could just as well have bought a desktop computer to begin with!

I've never considered buying a MacBook. It's the MacBook Pro I've been looking at to replace my PowerBook G4 (just like I never considered buying an iBook but opted to a PowerBook).
Allen: you say that the MacBook display is better than 90% of displays in other branded laptops. How does the MacBook Pro display compare to other laptops?
PShock: It seems that there is no way past getting a separate display connected to a MacBook Pro, or buy a desktop Mac if I want really accurate color.
Actually my Powerbook is used mostly at home, with the AC adapter plugged in, but then there are those times I need to use it somewhere else and I've found a laptop to be invaluable! I don't think I could ever go back to a desktop computer again. I hate all those bulky boxes, wires, mouse, external keyboard etc.
Who knows what the future might bring, but for the next couple of years I'll be studying to become a photographer, so I won't be at the pro level just yet. But then again I like to invest in stuff I can really use well for a long time to come.
Would a 15" MacBook Pro along with an external high-quality monitor be a good choice if I want to get serious about photography?
I probably don't have to worry about that stuff just yet though, and according to the school it seems that a MacBook Pro and a Canon or Nikon SLR is what they recommend when studying there.
I mentioned having a Canon EOS-350D and someone there said it's OK to start out with, but I'll probably have to trade it in for something more professional soon.
Some additional concerns I have about trading in my Powerbook G4 for a top of the line MacBook Pro:
    1) While my 15" display is set for 1440x960 pixels, the 15" MacBook Pro has 60 less vertical pixels (1440x900). Anyone know why this is, and if this makes much of a difference?
    2) Unlike the PowerBook G4, the MacBook Pro doesn't have a built-in modem. I must admit that I haven't used it that much, but it has been critical for a few instances where I needed to fax something. Mind you, I know that a USB modem is available but one of the reasons I got rid of my desktop computer to go the laptop route was because I hated all those things dangling off the machine.
What are all of your experiences with the missing modem?
    3) You can't run "Classic" on Intel based Macs as far as I know. Being able to run Classic applications was a big deal for me before getting my PowerBook because I wanted to run all the stuff I had used on my desktop Mac. But when I eventually got the Powerbook I used OSX software anyway, except a small handfull of apps. Truth be told I don't think I've used "Classic" for several months, so I can probably live without it.
    4) The Powerbook has an S-video connector which the MacBook Pro is (as far as I know) missing. I don't know if this is a big issue or not, but I can think of a few instances where S-video might be useful. Perhaps there are adapters available to convert the video connector to S-video?
Other than that it looks like the MacBook Pro can replace all that I've grown accustomed to with my 15" Powerbook G4 (Firewire 800, PCMCIA card slot, USB, audio in/out, ethernet and wireless Internet :-)

  • Display Calibration Issues

    hi,
just upgraded to 10.6.8 and lots of issues.
the biggest is that my 30" cinema display now looks 15-20% lighter.
the screen image (especially in abobe indesign) doesn't look like it did in 10.5.8
and looks lighter than my normal print output.
I've played around with display calibration, but my new settings are really different
from my original settings. and of course, now all my indesign files are out-of-sync
with the abobe color settings and need to be updated, each and every one.
I also read that the new 'target gamma' is now 2.2 for 10.6.8 (as a default), but
when calibrating in SL, isn't not default and you need to know to manually change that.
has anyone else experienced these kind of SL display problems?
if so, how did you correct them?
in the back of my mind I'm thinking it's something with the video card, but
I'll try anything short of messing with that.
bottom line: all was well in 10.5.8.
now with 10.6.8, I've got issues that need to be fixed asap.

    my suspicion is snow leopard.
Nope, color works just fine. Something has changed in your setup. If you're using the exact same monitor and printer profiles you had under 10.5.8, color should come out the same under Snow Leopard.
While the default for Snow Leopard is now a 2.2 gamma, it doesn't mean you can't change it. It only means the long supplied Apple profiles are now built with a 2.2 gamma instead of 1.8. You can still build your monitor profiles to any white point and gamma you want.
Color matching is actually much simpler than it sounds. Though I should say the concept is simple. ColorSync is what controls color between devices. If you're trying to match your print to the monitor, ColorSync reads the monitor profile's color space. It does the best it can to make it fit and translate to the printer profile's color space.
That's the simple explanation. But in order for that to work, you need accurate profiles. You'll go through an awful lot of paper and ink trying one unrelated profile after another, and still get nowhere. By "unrelated", I mean using a profile that has nothing to do with the device. Such as choosing "Adobe RGB" as your monitor profile. That profile means nothing in relation to your monitor. It does not describe the white point, gamma or brightness you monitor is necessarily set to, nor the gamut or range of color it can actually display. Same goes for the rest of any profile the system allows you to choose as your monitor profile. They are all generic profiles that in no way describe the device you are looking at. I go into a lot more detail on monitors here.
So when you do use one of those generic monitor profiles, ColorSync can only assume, yes, this must be exactly how the monitor looks that you're viewing. Which of course it doesn't. So naturally, printed color is rarely even close.
The least expensive color management tool you can buy, and at the same time drastically improves your ability to match output to your screen is something like this. Of the two models, definitely get the i1Display Pro. Much faster, accurate unit. Also much better software with more control. Don't bother looking at older colorimeters such the i1Display2, Spyder, or any other previous models. They can't handle the output of today's wide gamut LCD or LED monitors. Gray rarely comes out gray. Usually very greenish or pink. These new models have bee completely redesigned to handle today's monitors. They also handle older monitors just fine.

  • Windows or Mac for photography and personal work

    Hi,
I'm new to mac and have been a windows users all these years. I'm looking to buy a new Mac for the first time. I have other apple products like Ipad & Iphone too.
I'm working as a IT manager as a main profession. But im a photography hobbist with more interest in landscape photography, travel and family pictures too. I do lot of Photoshop & Lightroom works. I dont earn money for my photography. I do spend a lot of the time in front of my computer online like internet browsing, social media..etc.
I need some advice. The below are my question.
    1. What is the best time to buy a new Mac? Should i wait till apple releases their new 2014 models?
    2. When apple releases their new Mac products every year?
    3. For my needs do i need to go for 13" MBP or 15" MBP?
    4. I shoot lot of pictures every week. Not sure will mac be good option to backup all my pictures from my camera just like a windows PC.
    5. Should i buy a cheaper windows PC (i5 with HD IPS display refurb for under $500) mainly for photography work and plus another 13 MBP retina for my regular light work? This will cut down the cost little bit.
    6. Should i just buy just one high end version of 15" MBP with i7,16GB & 512SSD for all my personal use ?
    7. If i buy a new MBP retina now, will i be able to uprade the SSD later? Does the new 2013 macs support upgrading the hardware?
I would Appreciate your valuable inputs and your time as well.
    Thanks in advance,

In order (for the ones I feel I can answer):
    1. Buy it when you feel it meets your needs. As an IT manager, I am sure you are aware how futile it is to chase the latest and greatest.
    2. No one here can predict when (or ever) Apple will make hardware or software releases. In fact, speculation on those things here is forbidden by the TOU.
    3. Matter of preference. Bigger screens are nice I had a 27" iMac and loved it.
    4. Backing up on a Mac is seamless (Time Machine). EVERYTHING is backed up. I am cautious so I also make bootable clones in addition to using Time Machine.
    5. I would not, but my opinion of "cheap" PCs running Windows is very low.
    6. Only you should make that decision. A recommendation here would be just another opinion.
    7. Yes. A friend of mine did that using a certified third party manufacturer. I always buy from Apple as I am hardware challenged.

Edit: about # 7 -Clinton is correct, I am sure. My friend has a non-retina model.

  • How best to calibrate monitor using Display Calibrator Assistant?

I have had my 20" iMac since January 2007, but have not yet calibrated the monitor which I understand is a good thing to do periodically. I would like to do this using the Display Calibrator Assistant available via Mac System Preferences.
My Internet research on this subject has uncovered some controversy on how to perform the calibration. For example, a preponderance of opinion seems to be that the Gamma setting should be 2.2 instead of the 1.8 recommended by Apple for Mac OS computers. There are also differing opinions on whether to use the Expert Mode when calibrating.
I would appreciate an authoritative response on how best to perform the monitor calibration. For your information my primary interest regarding calibration is making sure that colors are correct when I am viewing and editing photographic digital images that I store in iPhoto.

    Hey, Pete!
With my Nikon I can set the color space to either Adobe RGB or sRGB. Ken Rockwell (kenrockwell.com) is very knowledgeable in this area, and in his User's Guide for the D200, strongly advises the default sRGB setting unless the user really knows what he is doing with Adobe RGB and does his own printing. I don't agree with all of Mr. Rockwell's pronouncements, but on this issue I opted to follow his advice.
I don't find noise to be a significant issue with the D200 from ISO 100 through 1600.  Noise gets pretty bad at ISO 3200, but the Noise Ninja program is very helpful in reducing noise to acceptable levels. Noise is worse in underexposed areas, but on balance I still prefer underexposure--within reason--to overexposure.
I started out my use of the D200 shooting everything in RAW + JPEG (Large Normal Optimal Quality), but in most instances I didn't feel that RAW gave me noticeably better results than JPEG. Also, RAW images chew up a lot of hard drive space. I now shoot most stuff JPEG, but employ RAW in situations that might present a problem, like when shooting sporting events in school gymnasiums which typically have abominable lighting conditions. With RAW images white balance is easier to adjust than with JPEGs. On the Internet I have read a number of impassioned arguments in favor of RAW over JPEG, but I still consider RAW to be a digital image format and not a religion! Therefore, I don't fear consignment to hades as a penalty for shooting JPEGs!

  • MacBook Pro for Photography

I want to buy MacBook Pro for Photography i.e. for managing images and editing images through Photoshop or other photo editing softwares. I read in previous Q&A that for Photograpy, it's advisable to buy Anti Glare screen. Now with new MacBook Pro with Retina display, I am confused which one to buy - new MacBook Pro with Retina Display or the previous version MacBook Pro with Anti Glare. Please advise. Also suggest a acceptable configuration for Processor Speed, Memory and Graphics Card.

Before I bought my MBP as my platform to show my photos, I read many reviews. I found them to be most confusing because the reviews were using the same reasoning to support both screens.
In the end I took a CD of my photos to the Apple Store and told them what I wanted to do. They moved a pair of MBP next to each other, each with a different screen. I then examined the photos. I finially decided against the anti-glare screen. I felt that the anti-glare screen reduced the color and detail of my photos.
I think that is about the only way you can really be sure.
