Moodle on OS X

I've just run up an OS X 10.4.8 server on a dual processor G4 machine. I would like to run the educational package 'Moodle' on this machine.
Has anyone tried this before and can you offer any advice on setting it up?

We did. No problems. Running smoothly.
Having installed Moodle in about 5 minutes and found it was rather easy.
I created a test course (with 4 true/false questions), set it so guests can access the course wihtout a key (it's just a test course) and I can't get it to issue the test, I tried adding a page but this didn't help.
Maybe if you have some time you can log in as the admin and see if you can fix what I did wrong, document the missed steps so that we can generate some courses to be used in conjuction with this forum?
OMG, I'm asking for help.
I retain so much information that I can make anything work but using the software for anything is usually outside of the scope of my requirements.
Anyway, if you can help send me an e-mail off-forum and we can go from there.

  • Adobe Captivate Flash Buttons in Moodle

I am using flash SWF files to control Captivate Course in Moodle and I have trouble with CLOSE pop up window flash button. It works in IE and FIrefox but not in Chrome and OPERA when course is opened via Moodle. I have created simple html page with link that opens pop up window containing the same course and this way the button works in all browsers. ????? Again, in MOOdle it doesn't.
In Chrome Developer Tools I have tracked this error when clicking on close pop up window flash buttom: Ignoring cross-frame javascript URL load requested by plugin.
The button itself is using this AS3:
    pbcExit_mc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, myBtnClicked);
    function myBtnClicked(e:MouseEvent):void {
    navigateToURL(new URLRequest("javascript:window.opener=self; window.close()"), "_parent");
Does anyone have a clue what is the problem?
    Thank you,

We are evaluating the use of iPod touch devices to record best practice videos on our manufacturing floor and to post to an internal Moodle web site. How can you upload a video from the iPod touch to a site other than YouTube? The Moodle upload interface is expecting a file selection dialog box like windows or OSX. I do not want to have to go through an intermediary step of messing with a pc.
    Thanks!

It should be around 7 and a half gigs. In iTunes, across the bottom there should be a bar that show how much storage is being used and by what. (music, movies, apps, etc.) To make music take up less room, you can check the box to make it convert the music to 128kbps AAC. This lowers the quality, but with most earbuds and speakers, you can't even tell the difference.
The iPod touch has parental controls built in. You'll find them in Settings. I think they only work for enabling/disabling Safari, Mail, YouTube, and App Store. Here's an app that does more: http://www.mobicip.com/online_safety/ipod_touch

  • The password manager no longer works after a recent Moodle update.

I'm using Firefox 35.0.1, which used to remember my password at Moodle, but since an update to Moodle 2.8.1, I may briefly see the stored login info but the screen quickly moves to blank login boxes every time. Yet I can see that it is stored in Saved Passwords. (The password info will save correctly in Safari.)

  • The website I use for my online college work is Moodle. Firefox will not let me upload my documents on this site.

I have been using Firefox as my default browser because in the past it has worked best with Moodle. Moodle is what my college (University of LA @ Monroe) uses for online classes. We are required to upload documents and assignments for our course. This has always worked fine in the past. Now, it will not let me upload using Firefox. I can only upload using Explorer. The process for uploading is to "browse" our computer for documents and then "upload." I get the message on the bottom left "sending request to ulm.edu" but then it gives me an error (id not found) or just gets hung up. I have been emailing the ULM help desk and they can't see a problem from the ULM/Moodle end of it.

I have this problem too. It appears to have occured with Firefox 12 and above. IE will allow me to upload so it's nothing to do with firewalls and anti virus etc. I am loathe to return to the Microsoft product but will do so if a satisfactory result cannot be found.

  • Moodle grading works in IE6 but not Firefox 3?

I am new to Captivate, and I have conducted searches in Adobe's and Moodle's forums and have not found a resolution to this problem.
I have a quiz created in Captivate 4 that I am uploading to Moodle 1.9.1. The quiz displays, but the grades are not reported to Moodle when completed in Firefox or Safari. Interestingly, IE6 reports the quiz scores as expected.
I've seen some discussion of this problem, but no solutions. Surely others have used Captivate to create quizzes in Moodle? Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Hi Rob,
I'm trying out your settings as well as the settings posted on this thread: http://forums.adobe.com/message/892822#892822
My question is, in your instructions there are no checkmarks or visual marker to tell me whether these two settings should be checked or unchecked? (Maybe there is and it's not showing up on my browser)
    LMS Customization Settings:
    Never Send Resume Data
    Escape Vars & Session ID
Please let me know when you get a minute? And after I do the testing I'll report back whether this helps. For background, I'm having two issues with using FF:
    1. The sco data for interactions are not being stored if using FireFox as the browser. Worked on IE8.
    2. The scorm calls for FF/Opera take longer so user actions (like closing the course window) may interrupt these calls and so they are not stored in the LMS.
Thanks for the info in this thread btw!

  • Help with Moodle on Mac OS X server - PhP issue

I am a server newbie.  I am setting up a server on a mac for the primary purpose of running a website for my students to use.  I have a hosted site now, but the version of php they offer is not high enough to run moodle.  I want to install moodle 2.4 on my mac server (mountain lion) but it needs :PHP 5.3.3, MySQL 5.1.33 or Postgres 8.3.  I read that I should not try to update the native php (5.3.13)  any thoughts or workarounds?  I could install an earlier version of moodle, but it is no longer being supported with updates.

First off, ensure that local DNS services are working.  If DNS is not working, then various services offered by OS X Server can be flaky.  Launch Terminal.app and issue the following diagnostic command:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
It's common for folks to skip DNS setup or to reference ISP DNS services, which usually gets them in trouble, and have a much larger project fixing DNS-level errors.
OS X 10.8.4 should have php 5.3.15 and PostgreSQL 9.2.1, the versions of both appear to exceed the Moodle minimum requirements of 5.3.3 and 8.3, respectively.  To verify the php version, use the usual "<?php phpinfo() ?>" script.  For PostgreSQL, the brute-force command-line version check is "psql --version" command.
Put another way, I'm not sure why you're considering upgrading components — which can be problematic — if you're already running OS X Server 10.8.4 as implied by the footers of your posting.
Have a backup before starting the installation, as mistakes happen and having a backup of the whole disk means a faster recovery and an easier ability to start anew.

  • While in Edit Mode in Moodle - page content does not render at all, but I am able to display the underlying HTML code. Happens only after upgrade to Firefox 11.0.

While in edit mode in the Moodle course management system, the Page Content window should display the page as it will appear to the user. If you click on the "Edit" button, you are able to view the HTML code for the page. However, when you return to the normal display mode, the page is blank. This has occurred after the upgrade to Firefox 11.0. Page is normally rendered in Internet Explorer.

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • Preparing Captivate 5 SWF ready for Moodle

Hello - I'm a bit of a noobie with all things Captivate and I was wondering someone can advise me on what I have done so far:
I have 6 Captivate SWF exported movies, the final movie being a quiz. All the SWF's do not have reporting enabled except for the quiz.swf (SCORM 1.2).
I have created a Captivate Aggregator SWF that bundles all the files up into a Table of Contents fashion.
I now need to upload all the files to Moodle (in a ZIP file SCORM 1.2 compliant). This is what I plan to do:
ZIP all the SWF's and associated .js and the XML files (generated by the Scorm compliant quiz.swf) using a SCORM packager (as Captivate 5 does not include this it seems).
    Upload to Moodle.
Am I doing this correctly? My confusion occurs when saving out my quiz.swf as SCORM 1.2 AND the  .ZIP that holds all the files being SCORM compliant. Do they both need to be compliant or just the ZIP?
    I'm confused, please advise...
    Thanks!

If you're going to upload a SCORM package to an LMS you DON'T use the Aggregator.  You need to use the Multi-SCO packager instead.  Having all the individual zip files in the Aggregator SCORM compliant isn't going to help you in this case.
When working with SCOs in an LMS you have two choices:
Package each individual lesson as a separate SCO. You don't need the Multi-SCO packager for this route. Cp itself can create a single SCO SCORM. You just upload them individually to the LMS, and set each one up as a SCORM lesson in the course.  The LMS will roll up the scores to give you a total for the course.
Package all of the individual SCO lessons into one huge Multi-SCO SCORM package using the Multi-SCO packaging tool that comes with Cp4 or (in the case of Cp5) the ELS 2.0 suite.  You then create a course in your LMS that is ready to accept this package and upload the entire Multi-SCO SCORM.
Your description of how you've got some lessons with scoring components and others that don't score (no reporting enabled) makes me feel that there's no point bundling all lessons into a Multi-SCO. LMSs are designed for tracking modules that either report a score (Pass/Fail) or user interaction (Complete/Incomplete). So unless you have at least turned on SCORM reporting for tracking user interaction, the non-scoring modules will pretty much be ignored by your LMS for reporting purposes.
A Multi-SCO SCORM zip has to have a precise structure and an imsmanifest.xml file that lists all the content modules in the course.  You don't get all this just by zipping stuff up.  That's why you need the Multi-SCO packaging tool, unless you go the first route I describe above.

  • Has anyone actually got a Captivate 6 quiz (pref. HTML5) working in Moodle X.X ?

    Thats wbout it really.
The way that C6 punlishes to a gazillion folders rather makes the process difficult (and I do not want to create Moodle Quizzes and export via Scorm as there is n point in that - I want to create HTML5 quizzes within the topics pages of Moodle.
If anyone has - or is willin to try - theh I will be amazed franklt :-)
    John

My best guess here as to the reason for your issue is that you've removed some of the essential objects from the Quiz Slides and that is fouling things up.
Quiz Slides MUST ALWAYS have the default Question Title and Question Text captions present.  These are special caption objects that are ONLY found on quiz question slides.  If you remove them or replace them with normal captions your quiz slides will malfunction inconsistently.
The other thing you may have done here by the sound of it is to set Submit All and then move the Submit All button off the slide into the scrap area.  That's also likely to screw things up.  If you do NOT want the user to see the Submit All button until the final quiz question slide then just change them to Transparent buttons and move them ALMOST off stage, but leave at least a few pixels of the button object still sitting over the top of the stage area.  This will mean the user cannot see (and is very unlikely to click) the Submit All button except for the slide where you WANT them to see it.

  • I have a button that opens a PDF that crashes Moodle and Scorm Cloud. How can I fix this?

    I'm using adobe Captivate 5.5
I have a button that opens a PDF that crashes the course when in an LMS (I've tried moodle and scorm cloud). When I play the course in my browser, the file opens fine and the course continues. Does anyone know why opening this file doesn't work when I upload the SCORM package to an LMS?
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hi aperio_chris,
Thank you for contacting adobe support.
Please use the following steps and let us know if that helps:
    1. In the publish setting>>externalize resources>>check all the check box which are for attachment, widget, animation etc.
    2. Check the flash player version change it to version 9 or 10 when publishing the output through Adobe Captivate.
    Thanks and Regards

  • When downloading course materials from Moodle, why do new Firefox windows open repeatedly and indefinitely until I FORCE QUIT?

I use Moodle for my University courses. Moodle recommends using Firefox. Lately, when I download materials for my courses, Firefox begins to rapidly open new blank windows and will not stop until I Force Quit. I also am left with as many blank documents in my Downloads Folder as the amount of opened windows. Occasionally, when my required materials are successfully downloaded, the document will cause the aforementioned problem to begin again. I have removed Firefox and then reloaded and it is still occurring. I have attempted to use Safari and have not had the same problem. I would prefer to use Firefox but am reaching the limit of my patience and am about to say goodbye forever.

See [[Firefox keeps opening many tabs or windows]].

  • Captivate Scorm 1.2 with Moodle and max. apptempts

    Dear all,
I am the person who pushed Captivate in our company and now everyone is looking at me because its not doing as we are used by Articulate.
    The setting:
Moodle allows three tries to see if someone passed or failed a lesson.
After the third try the user can redo the course in Articulate, but all questions are greyed and no new try is reported back to Moodle.
That way the user stays always with three tries and is displayed as in review mode in Moodle.
    My problem:
Captivate is set to 3 tries and reports back to Moodle.
In Moodle the user has three tries and after these three tries the user is shown passed or failed.
If the user starts the test a forth time (Moodle shows review mode) captivate will 'crash'.
If started a fifth time, captivate will work and report back.
So if you try it a fifth time and pass, Moodle shows passed.
Where is my logical error. What setting did I set wrong?
Can Captivate not do the same as Articulate?
Can Captivate receive a variable to disable the questions (Could be done via Widget)?
    Any ideas?
    Best TD

You mention that you have the quiz inside Captivate set to three tries as well as Moodle giving the user three tries.  I make that a total possible 9 attempts at the same quiz.  If the idea is to only give the person three opportunities to pass a test then you should set Captivate to only one attempt each time launched and let Moodle handle the number of attempts.  Or give Captivate 3 attempts and 1 in Moodle.  Either way, the limit should be three, if that's what you're after.
However, that won't change the bigger issue that Captivate is crashing for some reason and Moodle doesn't prevent a fourth or fifth scoring attempt.  It appears to me like when Captivate crashes, it's because something has happened in Moodle, because theoretically Moodle shouldn't be allowing any fourth or fifth scoring attempt.  So I wouldn't immediately be blaming Captivate for the issue here.
By definition, a SCORM doesn't actually know how many times it gets loaded because it doesn't store any data after the session is closed. The SCORM standard states that the SCO should not require anything outside itself to function. It's the LMS's job to record data about the user interaction with the SCORM.  So if the LMS (Moodle in your case) allows the user to open the same SCORM after they've exceeded the maximum permissible number of attempts, then the LMS is supposed to disable further scoring capability somehow, either by only allowing the course to open in Review Mode (which allows the user to do the quiz but not get any credit for it recorded) or by not allowing the user to open the course modules at all, usually giving them a message that says so.
I think your problem is somewhere in Moodle, not Captivate, and you may need to find out why Moodle is still recording scoring attempts AFTER the maximum number permitted.  This sounds like a Moodle bug to me and it might also explain why Captivate is crashing.  (If by crashing you mean that the Captivate lesson seems to go unresponsive, this is most likely because it's SCORM API is waiting in vain for the proper response to come back from Moodle.)
I'm not familiar with how Articulate interacts with LMSs, so I'll have to take your word for the fact that it can read the fact that the LMS has exceeded permissible attempts and disable the quiz components.  That sounds like quite a cool feature, but Captivate doesn't have it (that I'm aware of).  I know of no widget that will do it for you either, though in theory it could be developed.

  • Freezing issues in IE8 with scorm 1.2 captivate 6.1 export in moodle 2.5

    Hi
I am working for a large commercial company where we have IE8 and a moodle 2.5, i am exporting multible scorm 2.1 packages from captivate 6.1, the issue i am having is that the scorm content loads fine, then it gets too a screen that says loading, it then just sits there, we have waited hours and it never loads, the scorm package is flash based no HTML5 as this does not work with IE8, we have tried lots of different settings i have even removed the swf from the scorm package after export, replaced with an image, and updated the IMS manifest, this worked with no problems when re-zipped and uploaded, which makes me think its the swf file.
We have all the right flash plugins and can play a uploaded SWF with no issues, so i believe it is to do with the swf in the scorm package and how it calls on the appropriate plugins to run.
my question really is has anybody found themselves in the same situation, i cannot update IE8 to a newer version as this is a site wide company policy.
i have been through lots of threads that sound similar to the issue i have had but none had resolved.
    hopefully
    somebody can help me.
    Kind Regards
    Craig Sumner

NNot tried it on scorm cloud but when it's ran on a machine from a different moodle instance and IE 10 works fine, we ran the scorm debug page on the machine as we access the scorm content on IE8 & everything loads psnd runs fine on the scorm
