More a comment. While on the road my iPad failed to recharge the battery. Prior to replacing we backed up to iCloud.  Restored to new iPad and to my surprise all my music was lost. Apparently iCloud doesn't consider my music files data worth saving.  Wow!

Title says it all.  Serious disappointment for me.  I even tried using iTunes Match to get a quick fix, using my wife's help with controlling PC at home only to run into about 1/2 of my music grayed out.  What a mess!

Your right assuming I can put the music back with iTunes is a bad assumption.  I'm months out on the road and not dragging my home PC around with me.  Very short sighted in my opinion and not like Apple who are the masters of easy.
Another rub is that iMatch doesn't match all of the songs from my CD and as of right now the unmatched songs are not loading.  I thought by purchasing iMatch my wife could give me a reasonable work around. Nope! Half of my music is grayed out and the solution is for me to wait until I get home, expand the column display, and touch half of my music collection which is huge.  Again, Apple Easy has escaped this design and I'm not seeing business necessity.  My music is all loaded from legal CDs.
As for needing too much iCloud space.  It's money in their pocket.  Not to mention, I can control the too much issue by setting a flag just like every other data source.  I'm paying additional fees for iCloud above and beyond the iMatch fee.  When I drop money I expect full service and Apple Easy.  For a very reasonable rate a wireless HD becomes the safer and more complete solution.

The simplest way to transfer everything is to copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from old computer to /Music/ on new computer.

I have just bought a new macbook and trying to add all my music to my new itunes from a previous version of itunes (iTunes 9) in my seven year old Mac. I can import all the MP3 songs but iTunes ignores all the m4a format files. What to do? I have copied them into the music file along with the mp3 files but they still dont open in iTunes.

    From your OLD computer...
Copy your ENTIRE iTunes FOLDER to an External Drive... and then from the External Drive to your New Computer..

    You cannot redownload ringtones.
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for this very occasion. Have you failed to do this?

The hard drive on my laptop died, so i have lost all my music. It is saved on my iphone, is there any way to transfer it across onto my new laptop? Or does itunes keep a record of my purchases?

    You should be able to:
Backup the device to the new installation
Transfer your purchases into a newly authorized library
Recover any other media using third party tools as suggested in this post from forum regular Zevoneer
Restore the device from the backup
This process should switch the association of the device to the new library, preserving the data and settings in your apps.
May also be prudent to attempt a backup to iCloud directly from the device before you start... Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > iCloud Backup > On. It won't save any media but it would preserve the general account settings and documents in case anything goes wrong while you are trying to extract your other data.
When you get it all fixed, make a backup!

I have a Windows 7 laptop using I tunes 64 and all my music files are
on an external disc. I rarely use I tunes and at one point moved all my files
(including the music files) from one external disc to another without
considering what affect this would have on the I tunes library. When I eventually
attempted to use I tunes, every selected a song from the library resulted in a
message stating that the file couldn't be located. After following some of the procedures
explained in this community I was able to reconnect the library back to where
the associated music files are presently stored. However, there are still 2
problems that need to be corrected. 1) Every song file now has a duplicate. One
file works and the other file will result in the same message stating that the
file couldn't be located. Before there were 4,000 songs in the library, now
there are 8,000 songs. I need to eliminate the 4,000 dead song files. 2) All
the playlists are still associated with the dead song files which makes the
playlists unusable. Can the playlists be reconnected to the usable files
without manually having to recreate them? Thanks in advance for the help.

    So am I understanding correctly?
You used your iPod as a hard drive (drag and drop) instead of having iTunes install the music?
If you used drag and drop your choices are different than if you used iTunes to transfer.
    Good luck!

In some case if you disabled the connection in Windows firewall inbound of

I am interested in purchasing a new PC and wanted to transfer all of the music on my Itunes onto my new computer's Itunes the easiest was possible. Any suggestions?

These are two possible approaches that should work to move the existing library to the new laptop.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase are reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your library or a backup of it then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • HT1349 I have recently moved home from the UK to the Cayman Islands, my PC in the UK has been destroyed as it was 240v but my ipod will now not sync with itunes on my new laptop can anybody help as my ipod holds all my music files

Now with a little more space, I believe this to be a simple fix just not for me! I have recently moved from the UK to the Cayman Islands and there lies the problem,  'voltage'  ....
My UK PC was 240v and has now been destroyed so when I secured a new laptop 110v and downloaded itunes I was told by 'itunes' as my ipod was linked to another PC it would not/could not sync to my ipod. As the ipod holds ALL my music files this is a major drag. Can anybody tell me how to unassociate my ipod with my old PC so I can sync with my new laptop.
    Regards Rob

All computers sold in the past 10 years are univeral insofar as voltage is concerned, so it may have been destroyed but not because of voltage. The right thing to do is to restore the backup that you must have made of your old PC to your new laptop. Then you will not lose anything when you sync the phone.

  • My music files etc were all located on my old laptop which was stolen. I have just plugged my iphone in to my new computer and it has deleted all my files. Has anybody got any ideas on how to retrieve the files?

My music files etc were all located on my old laptop which was stolen. I have just plugged my iphone in to my new computer and it has deleted all my files. Has anybody got any ideas on how to retrieve the files?

    WINDOWS?
Connect the iPod to your PC. If iTunes starts syncing (ie erasing) your music automatically, hit the X in the upper right hand corner of iTunes display, to the left of the search box, to stop it.
In Control Panel, Portable Media Devices, double-click your iPod.
In the Tools menu -> Options, in the View Tab, check "Show hidden files and folders."
Navigate to the Music folder. On my 'pod, the full path is
Portable Media Devices\NAME of IPOD (F:)\iPod_Control\Music
Select all the music folders, and drag and drop them into a folder on your hard drive, or directly into iTunes.
And you're done! The iPod music folder structure is strange and inexplicable, but once you move your files into iTunes you can set it to automatically organize your folder by artist and album to clean that up. (To do this, in iTunes Edit menu, choose Preferences and in the Advanced tab, check "Keep iTunes Music Folder organized."
might be out of date worth a try

New itunes is trying to wipe the ipod. But have many many playlists (many hours making) which I want to save. Any help would be appreciated.

If you want to just extract the playlists from your iPod, plug it in iTunes.  When it appears under devices, right->click on it and choose Export Playlists.  Save them to a location such as your desktop and them import them into your library once you have copied and imported all of your music back into it.
