More Airport Woes

Hi Folks, ive just registered in an attempt to solve the mystery of the unresponsive airport on my 2008/2009 ally unibody macbook.
Please go easy on me as this has seen me very much "in at the deep end" regarding the inner workings of my Mac
Like many others i am getting a situation where the "fan" in the top bar shows empty indicating Airport is switched off and then it won't switch on. After a lot of forum searching i managed to get it working again by removing the 3 Airport preference files, clearing the trash and restarting, as suggested on here and another forum. But this only works for a finite period of time, sometimes 36 hours, sometimes 36 seconds! every other suggestion has had no effect (PRAM? reset, SMC reset, deleting automatic location in preferences)
Can anyone tell me if im missing something as it appears to my untrained mind that the files are fine when OSX rebuilds them but they quickly get corrupted, necessitating yet another delete.
Many thanks in advance

Ok... I am thinking... only ten min?... hmmm... it should be on all the time.... ok... i think i have a reason... yes you are correct that if the network is reset from your computer if you delete the network settings, then re add it. It could also be the router I am using an airport extreme - time capsule (TC) but all routers are pretty much the same. But lets focus on the computer, and not mess with the router unless we really need to. I like Lion, but you are in constant use of a track pad on your computer - which I dont mind - and I own a laptop. The direction of the gestures on the trackpad threw me at first, and I had to change the default settings in the system prefs. There are a lot of under the hood improvements at the same time there are some liked and not liked visual improvements (but I am open minded and leaning more to liking it and learning new things all the time). If you dont have it, and thinking of getting it make sure your your computer has at least a system that has a core 2 duo processor. I have 3 gigs of ram on mine, I am not sure what the min for ram is but being the system has more under the hood muscle - I tend to (most time) keep my computer at my desk on a Griffin stand but some time use it on the bed or couch or at the dinner table. The machine runs the same maybe some warmer, which does not bother me. I understand the processors made after the core 2 duo are able to handle the muscle of the OS easier. I also religiously back up my computer using the built in hard drive in my router, but many of my friends just carry with them an external hard drive that they connect at least once a day and we all use the program Time Machine in the system prefs. If you have any applications that use the Rosetta archichetecher - they will not work anymore. I knew this was coming since 10.4.11 so it is not a bad thing. Apple is going all 64 bit and is 99 percent there (the third party apps have to catch up- although most applications have headed there  already) but the hardware is already 64 bit. Everything has to be 64 bit because the next processors ten to 15 years down the line are going to be 128 bit (just like the gaming computers revolutiionezed) To check your apps go to http://roaringapps.com/ If there not listed then your apps will not work. I use Office 2008 and I have not had any problems even though they say there may be few minor ones. I also use a lot iWorks '11 and more and more are using the latter. Overall I do like Lion, but see if you could play with it at a store before you buy it (it is similar in looks to snow lepard - some - but some people are complaining for nonsense or in their minds big reasons especially since the OS X (Lion) is a power horse, and it also has some getting use to as well as some under the hood changes are going on for the first week you have the computer
... Oh i looked for the system profiler but i think it is now called system Infomation in Lion ( not sure) ok ( it may not be the right reason for your dilema but ... try this go system prefs and and click network, click the advanced button check to see if you have to networks by the same name. If so delete one or both of them under the first tab (prefered networks - its the first tab for me). Also under the . TCP/IP tab click the Renew DHCP button. If this does not work, try resetting network again - delete the location, go to automatic, then go to assist me then hit apply... let me know. I am curious.
also have you run disk utility?

  • If an airport Extreme is combined with one or more airport expresses, what is the max number of connections? Is it just 50, or 50 plus 10 for each Express?

I would like to set up a wireless network with an Airport Extreme, plus one or more Airport Expresses to extend the range. I know an Extreme supports 50 users and an Express 10 users, but when they're combined does the number of users go up according to the number of Expresses combined with the Extreme, or is it limited at 50 no-matter how many Expresses are added?
    Thanks
    Steve

50 users + 10 users + 10 users + etc. I am assuming that each Express device will be connected using a wired Ethernet connection.
But, unless you have a truly fantastic Internet connection with your ISP, things are going to be mighty slow on the network since all users split up the available bandwidth.
So, if you have a 50 Mbps Internet connection, 50 users will have approximately 1 Mbps of bandwidth to work with. Few of us would consider having a 1 Mbps service in our home, even if we only had one computer....way too slow.

  • I want to install one more airport in my home to expand coverage. Will the two units still function independently?

I want to install one more airport in my home to expand coverage. Will the two units still function independently?

You can configure two AirPort Base Stations to operate independently if you so choose, but taken literally that will conflict with your goal of expanding coverage. Why do you ask?

  • 10.5.5 update for airport woes

A quick look around the various sections of these usergroups shows that 10.5.5 hasn't done much for most people that have airport woes BUT I can report that for me at least, 10.5.5 has cleared up all of my airport reconnection problems. A sure way to send my Macbook into a "password request infinite loop" used to be when I took my Macbook too far away from my airport express, when I brought it back in range it would require a shutdown, same when I closed the lid or it went to sleep by itself, getting it to find the airport again would require a shutdown (mind you iStumbler coud see the express the whole time)
So Apple must be doing something as my reconnection problems seem to have vanished with 10.5.5
Now they just need to figure out why my wireless sensitivity is now about 25% of what it used to be before I installed 10.5.2!
    Mark

    Worked great for me.
Have you repaired permissions with Disk Utility, tried resetting the PRAM or starting up in Safe Mode.
Reset PRAM - hold down Option-Command-P-R keys when starting until you hear the startup chime a 2nd time.
Safe Mode Startup - hold down the Shift-key at startup until you see the login screen.
Check your System Preferences after each - reselect your startup disk and reselect your wireless network (even if showing OK).
If the above does not work then a factory reset of your AEB might be in order. The setup manuals for all AEBs are here: http://support.apple.com/manuals/#airport

  • Airport woes...

so like many, since about the time of the mysterious two airport-related software updates, i've been having airport woes: internet connection randomly dropping. the woes escalated when i started getting hard freezes, where i would have to manually powerdown my macbook by holding the power button. i started noticing these freezes would occur when either i 1) turned on my airport for the first time after coming out of sleep, or 2) when my airport icon would gray out for a second, like it lost its connection. then the freeze would occur.
the woes have escalated: twice in the past three days, after coming out of a hard powerdown, i would click on my airport icon but it would say "No airport card installed." system profiler confirmed. but after resetting it would be okay.
    but the freezes continue.
so i don't know if this is hardware or software-related!

If this helps anyone. Finally got it to work I was connecting with wpa2 personnal which I dropped to wpa it logged in straight away and then went back up to wpa2.

  • Upgraded to 10.5.3 and then no more Airport - HELP !

    Hello,
I have WIFI LAN access issue after upgrading an IMac G5 to from Tiger to Leopard, and would appreciate your help.
    ISSUE :
Prior to Leopard, this IMac worked on 10.4.11 with access to my WiFi AN via an Airport Extreme Card.
After I installed Leopard 10.5 straight out of the DVD :
the Airport icon on the menu bar is grayed out as if it did not pick any signal, although I did not change location nor LAN settings
when I want to access to the LAN, it requests the 24 characters WPA password, but although I know the password is correct, I get a “connection failure” or “connection timeout” error message.
I get the same messages when I try to configure access from the Network preference pane.
A a result, I cannot get nor on my LAN, nor on Internet from the G5 iMac.
    UPGRADE HISTORY AND SOLUTION ATTEMPTS
I performed a simple upgrade from the DVD (ticked off the X11 option and languages translations though).
Then I also reinstalled the Airport Extreme Software form the CD, in case Leopard “erased” an Airport Extreme driver...
I also reinstalled Leopard with an “Erase” of the Hard drive,
to have a full clean start...
Last, I upgraded the system to 10.5.3 with the combo update that I downloaded from another computer, hoping that I would resolve this possible issue.
I tried to find firmware updates, but no success...
    SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
This is a LAN for home use for 3 Macs :
my Mac a Dual G5 1.8 MhZ under 10.4.11, works OK. I did not upgrade.
my wife iMac Intel Core 2 Duo 1.83 MhZ, upgraded to OSX 10.5.3, works OK
my kids iMac G5, bought second hand with Tiger, does not connect after 10.5 upgrade. I bought back then also an Airport Extreme card and updated the Airport Extreme Software (CD version 4.2, 2Z691-5417-A), since then it worked fine.
The LAN is managed by a wireless router from Italia Telecom (I live in Turin), here are some specs of the router :
    Alice Gate 2+ (http://aiuto.alice.it/informazioni/m.../alice_w2.html),
    - standard ADSL (these refer to the Italian telecom compliance)

    - WEP of 128 bits (13 ASCII characters)
    - supports WiSeConf (TM)
THANK YOU for any help, I would hate to have to switch back to Tiger...

I have the same self-assigned IP address problem on an old ibook which is connected to a Netgear modem via a Time Capsule. The problem occurs on waking from sleep and less often on startup. It's transient, but has been becoming a lot more frequent. Since it's limited to one of the four machines that connect to the network, I've been assuming it's about that computer and not the time capsule or the modem.
I've tried the fixes listed above (assigning a manual address, deleting preference files etc) as well as a few others (deleting the relevant passwords from the keychain and re-entering them in the hope that it was at that point the problem was occurring) and none of them have solved the problem.
I then came across a suggestion in another thread about this problem suggesting it might be the firewall. So I tried turning off the firewall (which is set to allow access for specific services and applications) and voila, the ibook received its IP address as it should the next time it woke from sleep. I tried putting it to sleep a few more times and waking it, as well as restarting it and repeating the procedure, and each time it worked, which was interesting.
Obviously having a computer with no firewall is not a great solution though, so I turned the firewall back on, and this is where it gets interesting. Because since turning it back on the problem seems to have stayed fixed.
I'm not enough of a techie to know what this might mean, but it might also be worth mentioning that the ibook throws up a pile of annoying incoming connection requests every time you start up - do you want to allow kp-something-something access etc etc, and a little while back I tried to stop this by creating an allow incoming settings for the kp-something-something request (since I've now deleted it I don't remember exactly what it was, but it's something other people have complained about). This didn't work, and I actually deleted the line in the list of File sharing (AP) settings while I was in the firewall settings trying to fix this problem. Even more interestingly, since I turned the firewall off and on again these requests on start up seem to have stopped.
I also have a suggestion for anyone who can't get the firewall trick to work, which is disable the password access for your machine and add use MAC address filtering on your router to try and get in that way. I don't know if this will work, but it might . . .

  • More Airport 101, I'm afraid

I just ordered airport express. I have iMac connected to Hughes.net (satellite). The first question is pretty stupid; the second is maybe a good question...
iMac has built in Airport card. Want to be able to bring home work Dell and access internet. Question: with Airport express, MUST the satellite modem be connected to the Airport express? In other words, I can't keep it connected to the computer, and expect the computer to "broadcast" to the AE base, and have that then share the signal with other computer? To restate; if I put the Airport Express adjacent to the stereo in my living room, the ethernet cord must be plugged into it if I want to use it for networking as opposed to just airtunes, and then I access internet on iMac in the den, and on Dell elsewhere? The reason I ask this is because the satellite modem is in the den, not the living room.
Also, anyone had any experience using airport express with Hughes.net satellite connection?
    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Although I am expecting the AE, on
iFelix's message I set my iMac for internet sharing
    through Airport. Never knew you could do that;
always thought you had to have a separate base. I
have set up my computer as a "base" and I get a
signal on my windoze machine but am unable to connect
    to the internet.
Did you password protect this software base station wireless network?
If so then you will never be able to connect a Windows client to it.
You have to have an open network (which is why I wouldn't recommend it).
I'm thinking that, even though it
establishes a connection with the iMac, it still has
to identify itself to my ISP?
Unlikely as the iMac will use NAT to share the single IP from the ISP.
I don't know how to do
that (they have people at work to deal with those
    machines)
More likely that the Dell is configured for the work network and therefore needs to be reconfigured for the home network.
It might also be worthwhile checking your internet settings
Start -> Control Panel -> Internet Options
    Click the Connections tab
Ensure that the Never dial a connection is checked.
    Click LAN Settings
and check that all the settings are unchecked (especially the proxy server settings)...
    What are your TCP/IP settings?
They should be Obtain IP and DNS information automatically.
What is your IP address now? If it is 169.254.x.x then it is not connected to the iMac wireless network.
Remember to write down the previous settings otherwise you won't be able to connect back at work.

  • More Airport Express Problems - its those flashing lights

I bought mine earlier in the year & eventually got it to work with my itunes. I had a problem today and ending up loading the latest firmware and then resetting. Now I'm back to square one. Flashing yellow lights - hard resets - error messages. Having gone through the set up I get the error message
"Airport utility was unable to find your apple device after restarting. The settings for this apple wireless device have been successfully updated, but there was a problem re-joining to wireless network or finding the apple wireless device. You may need to select your network in Manage Network Connections and try again"
I'm no PC wizz and I can't recall now how I fixed it the first time - probably more luck than judgement but I'm mega frustrated today. Anyone know their way round this? Many thanks

  • Need more Airport inputs. Use an old router?

Several months ago I replaced my NetGear WGT624 v2 wireless router with the Airport Extreme and added an Airport Express for bringing in my printer for both the Mac and Vista PC to use.
Everything works fine except I have more Macs and PCs than ports on the Airport. Two are connected with wireess but I need one more port to connect a sever used for back up.
I believe I can use the NetGear router by turning off the NetGear wireless radio portion and then connecting it "somehow" to one input port on the Extreme. Then the 4 input ports on the NetGear become available.
The help I need is how should I connect the NetGear to the Extreme? NetGear WAN out to one of the Extreme inputs?
If not, what is the proper way to do it?
    Thanks!

The help I need is how should I connect the NetGear to the Extreme? NetGear WAN out to one of the Extreme inputs?
I believe you would have at least two options:
    1) AirPort Extreme \[LAN port] > Ethernet > \[LAN port] Netgear
    2) AirPort Extreme \[LAN port] > Ethernet > \[WAN port] Netgear. With this option you will need to disable the Netgear's NAT & DHCP functions.

  • Cannot connect to AirPlay any more (AirPort Express)

I have been using AirPlay with my old AirPort Express for a few months without any problems.
After the recent iTunes update (I believe), it no longer works.
It shows this message for a long time:
    Connecting to "AirPort"...
    And then this:
An unknown error (-15006) occurred while connecting to the AirPlay device “AirPort”.
After that, the option to play from the AirPlay speakers disappears in iTunes:
And I can no longer access the AirPort Extress via the AirPort Utility (5.6):
I have tried disconnecting the AirPort from the power, resetting it twice, and restarting my Mac.
    What else can I try?
(I am running the latest Lion on my MacBook Pro.)

So I re-set it, the AP Express had a green light eventually, but it was taking FOREVER on this part, saying "Waiting for AirPort Express to restart...", even though it had already restarted and the light was solid green:
Then, after waiting so long, I get this error (-6753):
So now I can't even set it up properly...

  • Airport woes - suddenly stopped working

I’m unfortunately currently having Airport issues, and was hoping to get some help. My wireless network has been running fine for a while, but yesterday evening it suddenly stopped working. I could see and join my network, but it wasn’t working. When I connected my computer directly to my modem via Ethernet, it worked fine. I rely on wireless a lot though, so I unplugged and plugged everything back in, but it didn’t solve anything. Eventually, I decided to reset my Airport Extreme and Express (used as WDS) base stations and start over. I set everything up (standard set up, Extreme with Express as WDS), and my connection started working again. After about half an hour though, my internet went down again (just like before, I could see my network, but it didn’t work)
I tried unplugging everything again, but that didn’t help matters. I decided to try a reset again, but unfortunately this time around, that didn’t work either. When I check the network part in the system preferences, it says I am connected to the internet over Airport (green light shows), but I Safari loads for a few seconds and then tells me I’m not connected to the internet. I thought there may be something up with my DNS settings, but I checked them and everything is entered correctly. I reset everything a third time, thinking there might be something wrong with my Extreme base station (I even tried going back to default firmware but that didn’t help), and just used my Express station. Unfortunately, that didn’t work either (I get a green light on my Express base station, but it just won’t work). That is when I gave up. I tried again one final time this morning and am still getting nowhere.
The odd thing is, I haven’t changed anything…I don’t know why it would suddenly stop working. I hadn’t changed any settings, or messed around with the firmware or anything. I’ve been on the latest Extreme/Express software updates since a couple of months ago and have had no issues whatsoever. When connected directly to my modem, my internet connection works fine – so I’m assuming it’s not an issue with my ISP (UK Online). Since I can’t get both my base stations to work, I’m also assuming there isn’t a physical issue with them. FYI, these base stations are the old ones, not the new 802.11n ones.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what may be up and/or any suggestions as to what I could try?
    Many thanks.
P.S. I am on OSX Tiger, latest update.

It's always a good idea to completely power cycle the entire network after any changes or updates to a network.
If  you have not already done so.......
Power off everything....all devices....order is not important
Start the modem first and let it run for a minute or two by itself
Start the next device connected to the modem the same way
Start the Airport Express the same way
Start each computer and device one at a time about a minute apart
Check the network for proper operation

  • More Airport, Bonjour, Windows printing problems

I have posted about this before, about my own success in getting Windows 7 laptops to print via Bonjour through an Airport Extreme.  I thought I had it all figured out.  However, yesterday I replaced my older model Airport Extreme (first generation 1102.n) with the most current model (considered 5th generation). I configured the new Airport Extreme via Airport utility which allowed me to copy the exact settings of the old one.  Everything appeared to work fine until I tried to print from my HP laptop running Windows 7.  This laptop printed to our Canon Pixma MP490 (the Canon is hooked up via USB to the Extreme) via the older Airport Extreme and Bonjour without any problem. Interestingly, I had no problem installing the printer on the laptop using Bonjour--it shows it and appears to be in proper configuration.  I correctly put the Extreme's IP address as 10.0.1.1 as I have done before.   When I try to print, the dialogue box appears and shows the Canon 490 ready to go, but when I click to print, nothing happens, nothing appears in the que for the Canon printer.  I have tried the usual remedies, deleting and reinstalling the printer, restarting the Extreme and the laptop itself.  It just doesn't want to talk to the printer.  Any thoughts are appreciated.  I have done extensive web searching without any new ideas.

The cover page of the following document is unprintable. You get an  error message saying "no pages selected" if you start with page 1. You  can only print the report if you avoid page 1 and start on page 2. I do not have problems with any other PDF documents.
    http://www.bcauditor.com/files/publications/2011/report_4/report/OAGBC-Environmental-Asses sment-Office.pdf
I'm using Windows XP and a Laserjet 1000. This problem occurs with both Adobe Reader X or Foxit Reader 4.1.1.8005
Similar problems have been posted on http://forums.adobe.com/thread/392800
So it must be something peculiar about the way the cover page is designed.

  • More printer woes?

Hi, everyone - I have looked through the thread and seen that printing problems are common with Leopard, but I've never seen anything like this! I was able to get the library's new iMac printing perfectly - I just had to be sure it was recognizing the printer it was actually attached to! (We have 4 computers in the teen room, linked to three hp 810s - the eMacs are networked).
But, when I bring our lovely new macbook in there and hook it up to the very same printer the iMac uses, it simply won't print. I get a message saying there was a fatal error and the printer connection failed. All we can do is to save stuff onto a flash drive and bring it over to the iMac or one of the pcs (for adobe and word files) and print that way.
We'd love to be able to print directly from the macbook. Why on earth can't we?!!

What we've done is to unhook the usb cable from the iMac and hook it to the macbook. It's a stand alone printer, and we make sure the cable is firm. Then we open whatever file it is (we've tried in word and print shop, both of which are installed on both machines). And it won't print. We get the "fatal error" message I've described above. We can print those very same files from the iMac after we transfer them, though there I think I'm having the postscript problem. But the macbook simply refuses to connect to the printer at all. That's the problem.
Again, there's nothing wrong with the usb cable, it's firmly plugged in, and it's a standalone printer.
Thanks for your response. Can you think of anything I should try, like maybe looking for printer drivers on the macbook?
Unless we had out of date drivers, I've never come across anything remotely like this in any earlier version of OS X - or any version of the mac OS. Printers just used to work! I'm very frustrated that this doesn't seem to be so any more.

  • More AirPort Express problems and questions - sigh

I finally got my MBP to connect to the Internet yesterday, thanks to lots of help from Tesserex. This evening I tried to connect my partner's MacBook to the network and ended up having to reconfigure the AX because nothing worked again. Now the AX LED is flashing yellow again, and yet I am able to connect to the Internet wirelessly - I am typing this on my MBP. I am indeed confused as I thought the LED should be solid green, indicating good connections all around. Any ideas about this?
I also tried to secure my network with WPA, but this caused everything to screw up again, so here I am with no security and on the Web. Pointers for a newbie would be much appreciated.
I still need to get my partner's notebook to connect to the Web too.
My set up is DSL modem > Ethernet cable to Linksys DSL router > Ethernet cable to Apple Express (AX) port > wireless to MPB (in addition, I have two Ethernet cable connections from the Linksys routher to my two desktop PCs.)
Help would, as always, be much appreciated.

Ok, the Linksys is a non-wireless router, so we don't need to set up any of the wireless-type (WEP or WPA) on it, however, you may want to consider using MAC filtering. With MAC filtering, only the computer's MAC that have been entered into the filter can access the router. That would mean any other network device would not be able to use this router to access the Internet until their MAC address gets added to the filter. MAC filtering isn't hack-proof, but it will make it harder for amatuers to access your network. (Note: This will only be effective for computers that you will have connected directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Linksys, so you don't need to do this for your wireless computers.)
To setup MAC filtering on the Linksys:
    - Open a web browser and point to 192.168.1.1
    - Enter the Administrator username and password at the prompt. (The default username is blank, and the password is "admin.")
    - Click on the "Advanced" tab.
    - Click on the "Filters" tab to select it.
    - Click on "Edit MAC Filter Setting" button.
    - For each MAC you want to access the router, enter it's respective MAC address into the appropriate window in the following format: nn:nn:nn:nn:nn:nn
To setup wireless security on your AirPort Express Base Station (AX):
    AirPort tab (optional)
    - Create a closed network (checked)
    Change Wireless Security
    - Wireless Security: WPA Personal
    - Network Password: <create a password for your wireless network; this will be the same password that you will enter when you connect to the network>
    - Verify Password: <enter the same password you used in the previous step>
Base Station Options - WAN Ethernet Port
    - Enable SNMP Access (unchecked)
    - Enable Remote Configuration (unchecked)
    - Enable Remote Printer Access (unchecked)
    Wireless Options
    - Transmitter Power: 10% (Note: If you are having any trouble connecting to your wireless network, you should increase this value. The idea is to find the ideal power where only computers in the house can access the wireless network and not your neighbors.)
    Access Control tab (optional)

  • More camera woes (LCAB03VLNOD )

After jumping through all kinds of hoops I have set up Windows 7 under VMWARE (6.05) on my Mac. The problem is that the 'live view' does not show any image. I have installed the ActiveX plugin and I am running DirectX 9.x and all that. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? thanks.

Of course, right now I'm doing the web series both for creative fun and to get some road behind me. Since I'm weary of slinging code for a living, I wouldn't mind getting into the video world and following that path.
Chief among the things I don't know about making a living creating video for others is how to find the business and what it pays. Offering up post services could be fun, but that leans towards commodity thinking these days since every yahoo with a computer and some software (you know, like me) is offering post.
I would think that the ability to produce final product for clients would allow for more value add and perhaps make it easier to stand out a bit from at least some of the competition.
Ultimately, however, it all comes down to a) where is the business b) what does it pay and c) how do people go about getting the work?
