More camera woes (LCAB03VLNOD )

After jumping through all kinds of hoops I have set up Windows 7 under VMWARE (6.05) on my Mac. The problem is that the 'live view' does not show any image. I have installed the ActiveX plugin and I am running DirectX 9.x and all that. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? thanks.

Of course, right now I'm doing the web series both for creative fun and to get some road behind me. Since I'm weary of slinging code for a living, I wouldn't mind getting into the video world and following that path.
Chief among the things I don't know about making a living creating video for others is how to find the business and what it pays. Offering up post services could be fun, but that leans towards commodity thinking these days since every yahoo with a computer and some software (you know, like me) is offering post.
I would think that the ability to produce final product for clients would allow for more value add and perhaps make it easier to stand out a bit from at least some of the competition.
Ultimately, however, it all comes down to a) where is the business b) what does it pay and c) how do people go about getting the work?

  • Tethered shooting - more camera controls?

    It's great to be able to shoot tethered in Lightroom 3, but could more camera controls be included in the tethered panel? At the very least an image rotation tool would be useful; and controls for camera settings like aperture, shutter speed, ISO, white balance etc would be great.
    Right now I keep having to revert to the kludge method of using my camera's capture tool and having Lightroom auto-import the images from a watched folder when I need these controls.

    I have the exact same problem using Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit dual-core system with 4G memory on an Acer laptop running Lightroom 4.2
    Any help is appreciated.

  • Has anyone multiplexed 5 or more cameras?

    Has anyone setup a system using a lot of cameras? I have an application that will require either 5 or 9 cameras. Speed is not a critical factor (the part will not be moving) but I'd like the acquire rate to be on the order of at least a second or two for all 9.
    I believe I could use three 1409 cards and synchronize them. Would I have to synchronize all 9 cameras together as well as the cards or if I have 3 hooked up to each, can I just synchronize the 3 cameras hooked to each card and simultaneouly grab from all 3 cards?
    Does anyone know of a standalone multiplexer that could take all 9 cameras and output 1 video stream that would go into a 1409 or 1407 or other NI card? I heard of the video multiplexers that will t
    ake multiple cameras for recording to a vcr, but I'm not sure one of those would work.
    Thanks

    I totally agree - using firewire cameras will allow you to hang them all of the same card (only one card required, so you won't need to look at multiplexing anything), will be cheaper, and will allow up to 63 devices on the FireWire bus. As acquisition speed isn't an issue, FireWire would be perfect for your application. This option negates the need for framegrabber cards, although you will need to purchase (not very expensive) the IEEE1394 (FireWire) Vision Toolkit to extend MAX to see your devices, and perform IMAQ functions (more info on the toolkit is here).
    You can find more information on IEEE1394 and other vision techniques in my book: Image Acquisition and Processing with LabVIEW.

  • No more Camera RAW Love for us iPhoto '09 users?

    I guess all of us who don't like the new iPhoto are being held back by Apple from using our RAW images from the latest digicams. I thought RAW compatibility was system-wide and not a part of specific apps.
    It makes no sense that they would not let you handle RAW pics in iPhoto '09.
    Or Aperture 2.x for that matter. What gives?
    It's just irritating, I've been waiting to be able to work with my G12 pics in iPhoto '09.
    I really dislike the new iPhoto and have no intention of upgrading until places actually works and full-screen comes back among other more usability issues.
    Aperture is cool but, $200?
    Oh well, can anyone confirm that the Camera RAW is part of the OS and not just a add-on to the photo apps? If it is the OS then what the heck? Why wouldn't iPhoto '09 be able to deal with the RAW images.

    f it's system wide, then why won't it let me install it.
    It used to be System Wide but in recent times they've moved it more directly to the apps as otherwise they had to wait for an entire System Update to add Raw support for cameras. However, they also do get rolled into System Updates, AFAIK and so you might find it's added in 10.6.6 or whatever.
    Is a G12 RAW file that much different than a G11? They're both 10 megapixels.
    Megapixels have no relevance here at all. Yes, a G12 Raw is different from a G11 raw. By how much doesn't really matter - and you'd need to ask Canon that. But Raw support has to be added for each model individually, and remember the Camera Makers don't help that process in any way.
    Guess I'm just curious why they think iPhoto '09 shouldn't be included. It handles all the other RAW formats just fine. What gives?
    It does't handle "all the other Raw formats just fine", it handles the one that support has been written for only. WHat gives is that software makers stop adding features to older versions of an app when there is an upgrade available - it's an encouragement for you to spend money.
    Maybe I'll bite the bullet and buy Aperture...
    See?

  • More Wireless Woes [solved]

    There's a lot on these fora about wireless, but I haven't been able to figure this out.  So forgive me if someone else has solved this problem elsewhere, but I didn't recognize it when I saw it, I guess.
    I have a Broadcom BCM4306 wireless adapter.  I followed the instructions here, http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wireless , for the bcm43xx module, which I've added to /etc/rc.conf, and it shows up in lsmod.  Then, I set up rc.conf as follows:
    lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
    eth1="dhcp"
    eth0="dhcp"
    wlan_eth0="eth0 essid [networkid] key [likei'mgoingtotypeithere]"
    WLAN_INTERFACES=(eth0)
    INTERFACES=(lo eth0 eth1)
    The wireless adapter shows up as eth0 because the rc.conf module list runs before udev gets the wired NIC going, so wireless is always eth0.
    Unfortunately, nothing has worked yet.  Most of the time, iwconfig doesn't show an essid.  It usually picks up the wireless key, and sometimes shows the right essid if I give it the key first (by iwconfig eth0 key xxxxx then iwconfig eth0 essid xxxxxx).  Here is a typical iwconfig output:
    eth0 IEEE 802.11b/g ESSID:"" Nickname:"Broadcom 4306"
    Mode:Managed Frequency=2.437 GHz Access Point: Invalid
    Bit Rate=1 Mb/s Tx-Power=15 dBm
    RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
    Encryption key:xxxx-xxxx-xx Security mode:open
    Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
    Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
    Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
    Doing iwconfig eth0 power on gives this error:
    Error for wireless request "Set Power Management" (8B2D) :
    GET failed on device eth0 ; Operation not supported.
    ifconfig shows eth0 having a valid MAC address (00:0D:0B:CF:EB:0F), which I guess is relevant.
    This is my first adventure in the land of Linux wireless.  Can anyone help me out?
    Thanks,
    John

    I'm using a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop with an internal Dell wlan mini pci card (Truemobile 1390) that uses the Broadcom 4311 chipset.  I've tried to get this card working in half a dozen different Linux distros with the native Linux driver bcm43xx that's provided as a kernel module plus the firmware cutter software bcm43xx-fwcutter.  I've had no luck with this.  However, I've had good luck using a Windows driver running via ndiswrapper.  You may want to try that route.  For me it works well for 128-bit WEP encryption.  I haven't tried WPA encryption as yet; it may work for that too.
    Here's what you'd have to do.
    1. Connect your machine to WAN through the wired ethernet interface that almost certainly will be supported by Arch.
    2. Get the Windows driver for your wireless card, e.g. from the support CD that came with your card (it would be in the WinXP directory) or from the web if you don't have the CD.  To find it on the web, search  http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/medi … x.php/List  for BCM4306 or for the pciid of your card, or go to the card manufacturer's website.  The Windows driver consists of two files with extensions .inf and .sys.  Perhaps the widely available standard driver bcmwl5.inf & bcmwl5.sys that I use for the BCM4311 would be appropriate for your card.  Put the driver folder on your Desktop.
    3. Install ndiswrapper-1.26-1 and ndiswrapper-utils-1.26-1 by running
    # pacman -Sy ndiswrapper
    4. Bring down the wired ethernet interface eth0:
    # ifconfig eth0 down
    5. Navigate to the folder on your Desktop that holds the Windows driver files and run
    # ndiswrapper -i bcmwl5.inf    (or whatever the name is of the .inf driver file)
    6. To check whether the driver has been installed (it should be in /etc/ndiswrapper/bcmwl5, some two dozen files)
    # ndiswrapper -l
    If all is well, this should say: "driver installed; hardware present"
    7. To insert the ndiswrapper kernel module run
    # modprobe ndiswrapper
    The LED for your card should come on.
    8. To check whether the kernel module is running run
    # lsmod | grep ndiswrapper
    9. To bring up the wireless interface wlan0 run
    # iwconfig wlan0 essid name_of_your_wireless_access_point channel number_of_your_channel
        key your_WEP_key_in_hexadecimal open
    10. To get an IP address via DHCP run
    # dhcpcd wlan0
    11. To set up a route to the internet gateway run
    # route add default gw 192.168.0.1    (substitute you gateway's IP address here)
    12. To check the connection run
    # ifconfig   (do you have an IP address?)
    # iwconfig   (does everything look all right?)
    # ping google.com   (can you connect to Google?)
    You should have a connection now.
    To make this setup permanent and initialize the wireless interface on bootup, edit the following two files.
    /etc/conf.d/wireless
    wlan_wlan0="wlan0 essid name_of_your_wireless_access_point channel number_of_your_channel
        key your_WEP_key_in_hexadecimal open"
    WLAN_INTERFACES=(wlan0)
    /etc/rc.conf
    MODULES=(ndiswrapper)
    HOSTNAME="your_hostname"
    lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
    wlan0="dhcp"
    INTERFACES=(lo wlan0)
    gateway="default gw 192.168.0.1"         (substitute you gateway's IP address here)
    ROUTES=(gateway)
    Then run # /etc/rc.d/network restart or reboot.  You should be all set.  If you use the wired interface too (which should be eth0), you can add that later.

  • More printer woes?

    Hi, everyone - I have looked through the thread and seen that printing problems are common with Leopard, but I've never seen anything like this! I was able to get the library's new iMac printing perfectly - I just had to be sure it was recognizing the printer it was actually attached to! (We have 4 computers in the teen room, linked to three hp 810s - the eMacs are networked).
    But, when I bring our lovely new macbook in there and hook it up to the very same printer the iMac uses, it simply won't print. I get a message saying there was a fatal error and the printer connection failed. All we can do is to save stuff onto a flash drive and bring it over to the iMac or one of the pcs (for adobe and word files) and print that way.
    We'd love to be able to print directly from the macbook. Why on earth can't we?!!

    What we've done is to unhook the usb cable from the iMac and hook it to the macbook. It's a stand alone printer, and we make sure the cable is firm. Then we open whatever file it is (we've tried in word and print shop, both of which are installed on both machines). And it won't print. We get the "fatal error" message I've described above. We can print those very same files from the iMac after we transfer them, though there I think I'm having the postscript problem. But the macbook simply refuses to connect to the printer at all. That's the problem.
    Again, there's nothing wrong with the usb cable, it's firmly plugged in, and it's a standalone printer.
    Thanks for your response. Can you think of anything I should try, like maybe looking for printer drivers on the macbook?
    Unless we had out of date drivers, I've never come across anything remotely like this in any earlier version of OS X - or any version of the mac OS. Printers just used to work! I'm very frustrated that this doesn't seem to be so any more.

  • More PT880 Woes

    I not-so-recently assembled a system with this board and, of course, a 2.8 prescott and am having some trouble getting it up & running. I've perused the previous related threads and haven't found a solution yet.
    The system refuses to boot to either CD or floppy. The CD spins up while the floppy doesn't even sound like its trying, though both are recognized in bios. I tried using a friend's chip (2.6?) to flash to bios 1.4 but no go. So I RMA'd the board specifying a bios version error as the problem. Now, a month later, its back but it still won't boot.
    Specs:
    p4 2.8 800fsb
    1GB DDR400 Samsung Mem
    ATI Radeon 9500 Pro
    Recommended Big-Ass Enermax PSU
    Hitachi 120GB 7200RPM
    Samsung CD-RW 48x24x48
    Any help appreciated. This is only my second effort in pc-building so it could be something bone-headed.

    Well first problem is the Samsung memory.  I had some that I know worked and tried to use it with mine but I couldn't even get POST.  So I RMAed the processor because the D-Bracket said I had a bad proc.  Well I get the new one and still no post.  So I tried another stick of mem and it finally came on.  So I suggest that you try some memory that isn't Samsung.  It should come on.

  • More iPlayer woes

    I've now had iPlayer for 10 days or so and I've not managed to watch a single programme without it freezing and kicking me out.  I then have to start over, and the fast-forward is woeful at getting back to the right place.
    I've given it a chance and tried to persevere with iPlayer, I really have, but it simply doesn't work.  I'm now just going to have to record everything on BBC as I really can't be bothered putting the effort into trying to use a system that is quite frankly, rubbish.
    Someone in a previous thread mentioned that iPlayer was a retrograde step and I wholeheartedly agree.

    I have to say I'm becoming increasingly less impressed with Iplayer on BT the more I use it.  My main reasons why are:
    Freezing mid programme - this is happening more and more now it's been fully rolled out.  It normally sorts itself out in seconds
    Picture quality - frankly it's awful, particularly on a fast-moving image.  Examples of this I have seen are the animations on 'Total Wipeout' and crowd scenes on T in the Park / Glastonbury coverage where it appears to skip frames resulting in a 'jerky' image
    No resume option - the lack of ability to resume programmes from where you last got to is a big miss in my view when compared with the browser version of Iplayer.  Fast forward is unpredicatable so it's a pain to get back to where you were
    No 'Last watched' option - which is available on the PC version of iplayer.  Would help with the resume option previously mentioned too
    The thing is I don't know who's in control of this version of Iplayer - whether it's BT, the BBC or a bit of both so who do you go to.  Apologies if all this has been covered in other threads but I thought I'd try and get all my concerns down in one place.  It's a shame as Iplayer on BT Vision should be brilliant and I have no doubt it will be in the long run.

  • More JDBC Woes

    I am plugging along on this Foreign JDBC driver project (IBM AS/400 Connectivity). Through the answer of my previous question I have been able to create my Entity/View beans. When I try and test them by creating a module and using the "test" menu option through the IDE environment I get the error "No Suitable Driver".
    Is there a way to get around this? For kicks I created a JSP application using this business component to test. When I click on the items I get a JDBC connectivity error of some kind.
    I am fairly impressed with JDeveloper and would like to continue to use. If I can get through this then I will be convinced.
    Thanks Again
    John Brown
    null

    After working with this problem some more I did notice that the above error isn't the first error received...
    When I run the test option -- after getting a signon screen I get...
    oracle.jbo.DMLException: JBO-26061: Error while opening JDBC connection.
    Then when the error window is displayed I am getting no suitable driver...
    Hope this clarifies...

  • More Airport Woes

    Hi Folks, ive just registered in an attempt to solve the mystery of the unresponsive airport on my 2008/2009 ally unibody macbook.
    Please go easy on me as this has seen me very much "in at the deep end" regarding the inner workings of my Mac
    Like many others i am getting a situation where the "fan" in the top bar shows empty indicating Airport is switched off and then it won't switch on. After a lot of forum searching i managed to get it working again by removing the 3 Airport preference files, clearing the trash and restarting, as suggested on here and another forum. But this only works for a finite period of time, sometimes 36 hours, sometimes 36 seconds! every other suggestion has had no effect (PRAM? reset, SMC reset, deleting automatic location in preferences)
    Can anyone tell me if im missing something as it appears to my untrained mind that the files are fine when OSX rebuilds them but they quickly get corrupted, necessitating yet another delete.
    Many thanks in advance

    Ok... I am thinking... only ten min?... hmmm... it should be on all the time.... ok... i think i have a reason... yes you are correct that if the network is reset from your computer if you delete the network settings, then re add it. It could also be the router I am using an airport extreme - time capsule (TC) but all routers are pretty much the same. But lets focus on the computer, and not mess with the router unless we really need to. I like Lion, but you are in constant use of a track pad on your computer - which I dont mind - and I own a laptop. The direction of the gestures on the trackpad threw me at first, and I had to change the default settings in the system prefs. There are a lot of under the hood improvements at the same time there are some liked and not liked visual improvements (but I am open minded and leaning more to liking it and learning new things all the time). If you dont have it, and thinking of getting it make sure your your computer has at least a system that has a core 2 duo processor. I have 3 gigs of ram on mine, I am not sure what the min for ram is but being the system has more under the hood muscle - I tend to (most time) keep my computer at my desk on a Griffin stand but some time use it on the bed or couch or at the dinner table. The machine runs the same maybe some warmer, which does not bother me. I understand the processors made after the core 2 duo are able to handle the muscle of the OS easier. I also religiously back up my computer using the built in hard drive in my router, but many of my friends just carry with them an external hard drive that they connect at least once a day and we all use the program Time Machine in the system prefs. If you have any applications that use the Rosetta archichetecher - they will not work anymore. I knew this was coming since 10.4.11 so it is not a bad thing. Apple is going all 64 bit and is 99 percent there (the third party apps have to catch up- although most applications have headed there  already) but the hardware is already 64 bit. Everything has to be 64 bit because the next processors ten to 15 years down the line are going to be 128 bit (just like the gaming computers revolutiionezed) To check your apps go to http://roaringapps.com/ If there not listed then your apps will not work. I use Office 2008 and I have not had any problems even though they say there may be few minor ones. I also use a lot iWorks '11 and more and more are using the latter. Overall I do like Lion, but see if you could play with it at a store before you buy it (it is similar in looks to snow lepard - some - but some people are complaining for nonsense or in their minds big reasons especially since the OS X (Lion) is a power horse, and it also has some getting use to as well as some under the hood changes are going on for the first week you have the computer
    ... Oh i looked for the system profiler but i think it is now called system Infomation in Lion ( not sure) ok ( it may not be the right reason for your dilema but ... try this go system prefs and and click network, click the advanced button check to see if you have to networks by the same name. If so delete one or both of them under the first tab (prefered networks - its the first tab for me). Also under the . TCP/IP tab click the Renew DHCP button. If this does not work, try resetting network again - delete the location, go to automatic, then go to assist me then hit apply... let me know. I am curious.

  • More Xserve woes...

    Since I'm asking about the SATA card... I would like to know if anyone else has heard of the reason why it went out.
    Apparently, there had been a problem with certain Hitachi hard drives in the G5 Xserve (ours were purchased in 2004) frying the SATA cards when hot-swapping. We have two identical servers (itchy and scratchy) that have both lost the SATA cards. Scratchy began making a long, slow beeping when it got to the spinning gear in the start-up process, even when starting from the CD (at first it would run from the CD, while beeping, but finally wouldn't start at all). Before I realized what was happening, I swapped the start-up disk with Itchy and guess what? Itchy started doing the same thing!!
    I have Scratchy running right now off of a firewire drive, without the SATA card installed, and he is perfectly happy. I'm going to replace the cards and possibly the drives, but I would just like to know if anyone has heard of this phenomenon or if I am just an anomaly!

    This particular option does not fall into my area of scientific speciality.
    Tis a bummer though when troubleshooting and you move the trouble, no?
    Certainly someone with more knowledge about this will have some input to share.

  • More mail woes

    Hi all-
    I have been having a great deal of pain trying to get the "mail" to work on my IPT. I use Charter and have got to the point when I press the mail button, a screen comes up that says "Inbox". The little spinning wheel at the top spins awhile then I get the error message The connection to the server "mail.charter.net failed. If I press "Inbox" I get a message that says "load 25 more messages.... but no messages are ever displayed. What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks-
    DMitzelfeldt

    Hi!
    If you are using "other" on the IPT for MAIL then you are probably going thru the same frustration I was with the "connection to server" failure message right? So I called both Apple and my ISP and neither could figure it out, Apple said it just won't work with my ISP, case closed. Not so fast I figured it on my own, here's what I did and it works fine now:
    1. Connect IPT to your PC
    2. In iTunes go to the INFO tab on the IPT screen
    3. Scroll down to "Advanced" and check "Mail Accounts" on.
    4. Sync your IPT
    Disconnect IPT
    Now check your Mail settings on the IPT, there should be one account.
    Here's what I have and strange as it seems it works fine.
    POP Account Information
    Name: My Name
    Address: My e-mail address
    Description: e-mail address again
    Incoming Mail Server
    Host Name pop.ISPNAME.ca
    User Name: My ISP User Name
    Password: My Password (******)
    Outgoing Mail Server
    Nothing is filled in for any of those options - all blank
    Advanced
    Everything is off!
    Try that and good luck!

  • More iTunes woes

    I thought that if I synced a little more frequently I could avoid some of the problems iTunes throws up (eg wanting to wipe my iPad clean for a laugh).
    I plugged it in today and it's just spent ages transferring gigabytes of apps to my Mac .... that are already on my Mac and have been for ages!
    Why is it doing that???

    "If possible, I'd like a solution that doesn't require reinstalling iTunes or updating iTunes, because I get an installation error message with iTunes whenever I try to do that (great program)."
    That's not exactly a realistic expectation. Try and use Microsoft's Cleanup Utility and then reinstall Quicktime/iTunes:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
    Make sure it's a new and fresh download from:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    See if any of these help:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302538
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302386
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302775
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976
    If not mentioned in the articles, make a new user account in Windows XP and see if iTunes opens. That will tell you if there's something funky in your main account (if the new user works), or if you have a system-wide issue.

  • More localization woes - upside down question marks.

    With some effort, I am able to load variable values from the database based on the language the user has selected, and display those variable values in my column headings and the like (see thread How are session variables used for localization? for that process).
    However I can only display ASCII values!!
    I can load my translations with the strings "(ENGLISH)" and "(JAPANESE)", and based on whether the user selected English or Japanese, my column headings will in fact show the strings "(ENGLISH)" and "(JAPANESE)".
    Great!
    Except, when I load my database with what Japanese text, all I get in the UI is upside-down question marks.
    I'm using a tool to load this Japanese text into the DB written by someone else who swears(! ) this tool writes data into the DB in a format that is known to have worked for OBIEE Localization. On inspection I find this Japanese is in Unicode.
    I have written a Java app that reads the Japanese text back from the DB. When I inspect the String contents in the debugger, the data returned from the ResultSet does look like the Unicode data in the original text file. So the data looks good (?) in the DB.
    In the debugger, the character values in the String equate to these hex values:
    0x30B5
    0x30FC
    0x30D3
    (8 characters worth, 16 bytes).
    But now how do I turn these 0x30B5 Unicode characters into Japanese in the OBIEE UI?
    I am testing this in OBIEE with Japanese (Nihongo) selected. Most of OBIEE switches to Japanese just fine. It's not a local display issue. But my variables with Unicode values display as nothing but upside-down question marks. D'oh!!
    Thanks for any help!
    - OBIEE 10.1.3.4
    - Oracle DB 10g
    - DB is set to use UTF-8 charset.

    Never mind. I think it's working.
