More color labels

I like labels more than stars, and like to get lot of peoples opinion across many projects. wish had lot more color labels.
Check out the great application drag thing - he's got 17 color labels in that little app.

That's way to slow to type in keywords.
It's much faster to just press just one key to label an image on the
fly.
I can typicaly do a good edit of 500 to 600 images from a day shoot in
20 minutes. Just by labeling the images 1 to 9.
While Bridge has it merits its still not up to par with Iview. "YET"

It's possible to have more "label text" on one picture?
I have more "color label set" (category, portfolio, web....) but I can't join the same picture to more color label set.

No, you can only have one colour per picture.
Consider using Collections for "category, portfolio, web...."

Add more color labels?

Is it possible to add additional color labels? The existing ones are a bit... primary. It would be helpful to include other (well, secondary) colors as well. Also, black/gray/white would be nice.
Can I add them myself somehow, or do we need to fall onto our knees and cry out to Adobe? I hope not.
Using Lightroom 4.3 atm, considering an upgrade to 5.0. If this were a 5.0 feature, I'll consider it a selling point

Re keywords, there is a little problem. I have 2 keywords both with photos assigned, one is the right spelling and another has the wrong spelling. The process you described only works if I just have the wrongly spelt keyword, I cannot find an easy way to replace a keyword with another existing keyword.
Re labels, I don't want to hijack Thany2 thread, I can create another one if needed. In a nutshell I am looking for a way to map a workflow which in broad terms I would describe as follows:
1) Imported (not reviewed)
2) Reviewed (to be edited in Lightroom)
3) Reviewed (to be edited in Photoshop)
4) Edited in Lightroom
5) Edited in Photoshop
7) Exported to PDI
8) Printed
I do review my catalogue every 3 or 6 months and would like to have labels such as Reviewed 201501 (to be edited in Lightroom). I might need 2 or 3 more labels for other stages in the project but this tells 2 things, what I have done and when I have done it. I also want to somehow separate what I think is good photograph from what other people think is a good photograph (they are not always the same). I know this is long winded but data and systems are my profession and photography my hobby.

I would like to create custom color labels. I have created names for five colors, but the "custom" color (white) does not appear to be customisable
Any ideas? Ideally I would like two more color labels.

There are two versions of LR, a cloud-licensed version and a serial-number-licensed version.
It sounds like you’ve installed the cloud one which Adobe makes very easy to do, hoping you’ll signup for the cloud.
Assuming you have a serial-number from your purchase, you should uninstall the cloud-licensed LR trial, and then install the serial-number-licensed version from the Adobe Updates page and input the serial number:

Color label sets

Is there a way to create more color labels than just the ones that LR defaults to? Here's my use so you'll know what I'm trying to do. I use a different color for the "model" photo of a particular insect family. This allows me to search using this color and use the photos as my "easy cheat sheet" for making IDs. Since there are more than 5 insect families, I need more color options. Can I create them? Thanks for the help!

You are limited to five colors.
I would recommend using a keyword strategy instead.

Close all folders in Mail? Color Label folders? Find folder? And More!

Hi all.
I have a LOT of mail. They're all very organized, though. Heaps of Mailboxes (Folders) and Sub-folders.
I also have heaps of rules dutifully sending incoming mail to their appropriate mailboxes.
However...
It has reached a point where one of of the major bottlenecks in my daily workflow is sorting through all these mailboxes.
There are 5 primary mailboxes with perhaps 100-ish subfolders or sub-subfolders. Maybe more.
When they are all open, or a lot of them are open, it is difficult to find the a specific folder when I need it. It would help if I could close all open folder with a shortcut.
Is this possible?
It would also help if I could visually distinguish each level. Can I color label the mailboxes(not the messages themselves)?
Another help would be if I could run a search for a folder Mailbox name. Is this possible?
Lastly when I create a rule I would love it if there was an option to 'Create new Mailbox' in the rule dialog box rather than having to create the mailbox first. Am I just missing this? See link for illustration:

I just had a look and you need to create the mailbox PRIOR to asking the rules to move it into that.
Now, automator lets you create a new workflow, but not sure as to how to set that one up (might be possible; however, my mathematical brain tells what you want to achieve is flawed:
1) IF new mail equals "tangerine", create new mailbox tangerine, then move message to mailbox "tangerine. (FINE so far!)
2) the second "tangerine" message arrives, and the workflow should FAIL (because it cannot create a "new" mailbox "tangerine", as there is ALREADY a mailbox named "tangerine")
3) if automator cannot execute "If" and "and" and the "sort by" all together, then distinguish (a "tangerine" message might actually need to go to "pear" but refers to "pears and tangerines", so it ends up in the wrong mailbox), you may have to start and restart mail, until all stages of the script have been executed.
You see the problems?

Can not color label more than one file at a time

Hi,
I've had this problem since 10.6.6-ish, i can not color label more than one file at a time in the Finder.
Wether i select two, twenty or twohundred only one file gets color labeled.
It doesn't seem to matter if i assign a color label through the File menu or right click > label.
Figured a re-install might fix this but it hasn't (even a clean install without restoring any kind of backup).
Does anyone else have this issue and/or a fix for it?

Different colors for color labels - more visible for color blind folk like me

I would prefer any combination of these colors
Bright Red.
Yellow.
Light Blue.
Navy Blue.
Bright Pink
Dark Brown

Any progress on this one? LR2.1 color labels seem sort of washed out or too transparent. Something more bold and bright perhaps? User selected or different color sets as already suggested? This request has surfaced more recently in other LR forums.

Color Labels not showing across Network

I appreciate any help I can get with this...
We have a 4 macs on this network right now in our Art Dept.
2 are 1.6GHz PowerPC G5's 1GB RAM
2 are 800 Mhz Power PC G4's w/ 1GB RAM
All are running 10.4.5
We have a Buffalo Terastation as our Unix Server with Gigabit Networking.
It is very important for us to be able to see the folder/file color coding system. It is not working on one of our G4's. It will allow me to change the color, but will not be visible from other machines neither will it see the color if it is changed from another machine.
Has anyone else ever had this problem?
What can I do to fix this machine so it understands the color system?
Is there an alternative to the coloring system?
Is there a plugin or expansion for this to add even more colors?
This machine is worthless to us if this does not work...this is a very fast paced environment where we need real-time color labels to constantly know the status of our ads!

I have been having the same problem and I just discovered a solution. At least it worked for me. One of our computers was connected to the server using cifs instead of afp. Once I reconnected using afp the color labels worked fine.
Select your server on the desktop of the computer you are having problems with and get info. Under General info, see if the Server address starts with afp or something else. Under the Go menu in the finder select Connect to Server... and make sure you put afp:// before the server address and connect.

Newbie Question re stacks, import options, & color labels

I probably shouldn't just group together multi-topic questions, but creating a new topic for each one seemed wasteful. I'm just starting to migrate to Lightroom from PSE, so I have a few questions that I couldn't find answers to.
1. Can I change the color of the color labels? For example I find that the blue color label does not stand out very well with the gray background, so I'd like to make it a deeper blue.
2. Is there an import option (when importing from removable device) to delete the photos (automatically) after copied to disk and imported?
(yes, I know I can manually do it, I'm just lazy)
3. Is there a way to run the auto stack feature without losing already grouped/stacked photos. For example if I have photos A, B, and C and A and B are already grouped, then I run the auto stack with a time setting such that B would pick up C, I want it to add C to A and B, not create a new group with just B and C. AND/OR is there a way to run the auto stack on just the photos I have selected? I did a lot of testing and it seems like I can run it on an entire folder of photos or my entire catalog, but not just, say 20 selected photos.
4. Is there any option that I can turn on that will automatically put the virtual copy on top of the stack when I create one? (again I'm just being lazy)
Finally, sort of a general usage/workflow question .. I've done a bit of reading on virtual copies and snapshots and I still can't decide when one is better than the other ... they seem to basically have the same function - to create non-destructive copies of an original photo that can than later be exported or used. Any thoughts on how people are using them or when one is better than the other?

One more quickie, I was wondering if anyone knew how Lightroom 2 was going to be sold, ie for owners of 1.4 will it be a paid upgrade or free? I ask because I am still in the trial version of lightroom (was doing some testing to see if i wanted to stay in PSE or move to lightroom), and I have decided that I would like to move to lightroom, but there are some features in version2 that I already know I will want, so I'm debating about waiting for that release (to save money), unless it would be a free upgrade for owners of 1.4.
John - why is it better to copy from the card reader to disk then import into lightroom? Just curious as I have been doing quite a bit of research in last couple of days and it seems that a lot of people use that type of workflow (first copying to one folder on hdd, then importing, and then maybe moving later on). In PSE I used to always just use the Adobe interface to copy then import in "one step" (I say one step, but it was obvious that adobe first copied the images then imported them). Anyway I'll probably do as you suggest but just like to get into knowing exactly why I'm doing it a certain way.

Apparent bug in 3.1's handling of color labels

This ties is with [Applescipt manipulating color label|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2645193&tstart=15] posted earlier today.
If you set the color label of an image to have no color label via the pulldown in the metadata tab of the inspector (select the first circle which will display the text *No Label* when selected) the images color label is set to the string "No Label". Confirm this by looking at the browser in column view, the third column in the default view is Label. You'll see that for colors you'll get a circle of the color and the string name of the color. You'll also notice that other images that do not have a color label simply have --
The problem arises if you select *No Label* in the search field or Filter HUD. The images labeled as *No Label* rather then the empty string will not show up in the search.
The *No Label* string can be cleared out by setting the images label to No Label via the +Command 0+ keystroke.
The Applescript command to set color labels also exhibits this behavior.

Working with events can sometimes be interesting. I concentrated my efforts more on fixing the issue than trying to determine if this is a bug or not. I modified your code slightly to filter events based on click type and I think it is working the way you intended. Let me know it is not quite right.

Applying star rating/color label to "Current Pick" in Stack View mode

Is it possible to apply a star rating/color label to the "Current Pick" in Stack View Mode? Thanks.

is there a way of applying both the five-star rating, AND the green color label at the same time, with one keyboard shortcut, or otherwise?
If you need to do this in exactly one action, then I don't think there is a way to do this. Of course, if you want to accomplish this in two actions, you can select all the 5 star images, and then apply the Green color label to them all in one step, but that isn't what you asked for.
Is there any way to make my five-star rated photos more visually prominent in the grid view?
Not that I know of
ANother thought is to create a smart collection of your 5 star images, and then you can use the smart collection to view the 5-star images (none of the other images will appear)

Color label disappears

I put a color label (In Finder, File-->color label) on a document or folder but it stays only a few hours (I think that at midnight it disappears) Why ? (remind me of Cinderella)
All the other colors I made in the past stays.
There's probably no connection but the only change I made recently was upgrading Safari from 3.2.1 to 4.0 and after 24h or so I asked an exorcist to take me out of there ASAP, so he killed 4.0 and I went to Safari 3.1.1
Probably a coincidence.

I am confused.
This problem belongs to more people than just to me.
I thought that, if there were no solutions, after a reasonable time, someone from Apple will reply and try to solve the problem.
That has not happened.

Smart Folder not recognizing color labels

I'm trying to set up a smart folder for photos that have a particular color label. It's not working for some reason. It works with ratings, and with flags, but not color labels.
It's not a speed issue (I've come back to them hours later - still empty).
Any suggestions on how to correct this problem?

You'll need to describe what you're doing a bit more. I have multiple smart folders that search for color labels and it works.
Where are you setting the smart folder? Are you sure the scope of the smart folder is searching in the correct place? What if you search from the smart album attached to the browser?

Lightroom 5 color labels appear dark causing mac pro monitor(s) to go black, have to restart, get a kernel panic os 10.7 5

I have a Mac Pro 12 core, with a Nvidia Quadro Pro 4000 video card. I have been using lightroom with this video card since 2011 without a problem. I updated to os 10.7.5, which apple says it is the latest f and now when i use lightroom (after about 15 minutes), my monitor goes black, which i am sure is a video card issue which involves lightroom settings, and i have to restart my system. After restart I get a kernel panic report. I unistalled lightroom, and had no crashes. I reinstalled it and i started to get computer crashes again. (not lightroom crashes but computer -) When i open lightroom, the color labels appear saturated and much darker than usual. I took a screenshot www.jlanceimaging.com/lrscreenshot.jpg.
Since updating to 10.7.5 i have had this issue with lightroom and the video card.
I also went into photoshop an unchecked the graphics processor but still got the crashes.
and last;y, i opened up lightroom 4 and had no problems

You don't say what, if anything, you have done to test, resolve or rule out causes, so you can always assume hard restarts, freezes, and not safe shutdowns will make for more problems (corrupt files, file system, directory, etc).
Running Apple Hardware Test; Reset SMC; repairing your drives; ruling out cables, controllers, external devices, even drivers for printers and other devices.
If you are on a UPS, it should be 1000VA or larger (1300-1500VA). If there are other devices and you could be exceeding the load on circuit breaker, also worth looking into and sometimes requires adding a new circuit line.
