More confused than ever which HDV camcorder to buy

I do whitewater rafting videos. Have MacPro 2.16Intelcore2 duo, 1 gig memory with 111.47gig harddrive using imovie6. Super fast footage processing needed for quick souvenir DVD turnaround. Considering new 3chipHD JVC camcorder with 60gig harddrive for faster than realtime downloading(in theory!). 1)Will this GZ-7 work and if so, how much faster than real time will it download? Also noticed that it is much faster to record a DVD in realtime to a Philips DVD recorder than it is to export to iDVD and burn. I burn the video back to DV tape, rewind and firewire record the movie to the Philips DVD recorder (Since the Macbook doesn't recognize the Philips as a recorder) 2)Which DVD recorder would the imovie recognize? 3) Is there any way to beat real time recording with my current set-up? Here's the concept: Chase a raft trip and get 8 to 10 mins footage. Upload it to an imovie that already has stock shots and music, make a few quick edits and burn as many DVDs as possible before people leave. I have roughly 30 to 45 minutes to produce say six finished DVDs. The longer I look the more confused I am which camera to buy ($1500 budget) and the fastest way to get mutiple DVD copies finished. I've looked at stacked multiple DVD recorders and wonder if they will work to record at real time - say 5 DVDs at once using firewire from imovie or is it just another box of empty promises?

from a movie-makers point of view I'm more on tilmans side... (sorry, Kirk )
sure, Kirk's recommendation, DVDcorders, produce fast instant-dvds.. but including all errors while recording... no extras, no 'good lookin' '
I would:
* use any standard miniDV camera (you get water-proof cases for...)
* for superb quality, get a 3ccd with a large ccd ...
* I would create a 'frame' project in iM... that includes:
a nice intro, a standard message 'hi, I'm scc, and THIS is your ride of a lifetime..', add some 'stock' footage (=best scenes), perpare an iPhoto album of stock-pics (map of your canyon etc), an iTunes playlist (your Garageband projects )...
after recording, double-click on that 'frame project', and first step, save it under a unique name ('tour 12may07') ... that keeps your 'frame' intact for future use...
import your few minutes of fame, use the crop feature (oops, you're using v5? upgrade to v6... ), add the few scenes, save project. launch iDVD, add your ready-made backgrounds and DVD-intro animation, etc. and select iM project under media... burn disk.
to multiply that disks, use a copier as tilman recommend it, use Toast's copy feature, or use a HDD/DVD standalone (I'm owning a Pioneer DVR520), which also allows a very fast copying of DVDs...

  • I'm now more confused than ever about exporting!

    Hi there,
I have only ever exported now 3 movies from FCE to Quicktime for use on the web. Each time I get more and more confused! So I think so far I have just fluked it. I have replicated what I did (the process of exporting) on the last video about a month ago that video was only 5 mins long and took about 30mins to export and ended up being 23.6MB.
That said, this new video took 5 hours to export. Also, the file size is 760MB.
I am trying to export a 14 min FCE movie.
Does that sound right to you?
    Using Quicktime conversion.
    INTERNET/LAN
    compressor H.264
    Data rate Auto
    compression High
    Frame rate current
    SIZE
    Custom 480 x 270
    AUDIO
    IMA:41
    22.050
What have I missed this time that I must have done last time to get the file size down so much? or if there are any other suggestions on how to export it would be MUCH appreciated.
I have searched forums and watched endless how-to videos on this topic and I just don't get why the file size is so large compared to last time and I am getting more and more confused! I must warn you, I don't speak computer that well and this may be a really stupid question/topic so I'm sorry but, I NEED HELP!
    Thankyou in advance!
    Alana

It seems as though you are doing things OK from what you describe . . . . apart from the audio.
Maybe you didn't quite set it that way?
Was there any difference in the original video format from usual?
Simply choose Export>Using QT Conversion and select LAN/Intranet, leaving all the settings in their default position.
Make sure the audio format is AAC (not IMA 4.1) with a bitrate of 128kbps.

A basic MBA will be more than adequate.  Take into consideration that storage may be a long term issue unless you are not averse to traveling with an external HDD.

That may be a problem with the VLC plugin. VLC has never worked for me properly on the occasions that I've tried it on Windows and Linux, so I have stop using it. There are usually other plugins or media players available that work better.
What kind of media files are that?
For WMP files you can install the new Windows Media Player plugin you can also try RealPlayer and QuickTime if it is about media that those programs can handle to see if that works better.

  • Which HD Camcorder to buy to use w/ iMovie 11?

I have done hours of research to figure out what type of HD Camcorder to buy to work with iMovie (without using a conversion software utility). The world of HD video is VERY confusing to me. The best summary of all this I've seen is at Camcorderinfo.com.
    http://www.camcorderinfo.com/d/Reviews&level_b=Camcorder&level_c=HD.htm#
However I am still confused with all this. Seems like there are several key things to factor:
    I Type of HD:
         1. Resolution
         a. "Full" HD
         b. HD
         c. HD "Light"
         d. SD
         2. Scan rate:
         a. i (interlaced)
         b. p (progressive)
        3. Frame rate:
         a. 24
         b. 30
         c. 60
         x. native or not
    II. Compression (Codec):
         a. ACVHD
         b. mpeg4
         c. mpeg2
         d. HDV (old, so probably not recommended)
    So the question are:
    A. which of the above combination of types works well with iMovie 11?
    B. which camcorder meets these types the best (preferably a newer model, and preferably a Sony, Canon, or Panasonic)
Any help would be EXTREMELY APPRECIATED
    Thanks!

    a. "Full" HD
This is a marketing term. It usually means 1920x1080, but there is nothing inherently better in 1920x1080 or 1440x1080 or 1280x720. The sensor makes the difference not the format. Cheap little sensor that gives Full HD is worse than large sensor that shoots 720.
    b. HD
Anything that isn't standard definition. In the US technically anything larger than 720x486 is HD.
    c. HD "Light"
Another meaningless marketing term. I guess it means 1280x720. In the US CBS and NBC shoot in 1080i, while ABC and Fox shoot in 720p60, progressive frame, high frame rate, which is great for sports.
         d. SD
In the US that's 720x480 for DV and 720x486 for uncompressed.
      a. i (interlaced)
Media in the US is recorded and broadcast at 29.97fps, basically one frame every 30th of a second. In an interlaced recording half of the resolution is recorded in 1/60th of a second. During this recording the image is written as a series of lines from top to bottom, the first set of lines in the first field in the first 60th of a second might be the even lines, line 0 (actually half a line), line 2, line 4, line 6, and so on. In the second 60th of a second the other half of the image resolution, the odd lines are written, line 1, line 3, line 5, and so on. If there's motion in the image the two halves of the image, the two interlaced fields, are not identical.
    b. p (progressive)
This can be even more confusing. Theoretically it means that one complete image is taken 29.97 times a second. In most cameras this is not the case. What they actually shoot is called PsF or progressive segmented frames. This lets a camera shoot both interlaced or progressive. It shoots half the resolution, the single field of interlaced video, and then the second field. The difference here is that each field is the same. As there is no difference in the fields no interlacing appears on the motion.
    a. 24
Only film cameras and very few video cameras shoot true 24fps. Video cameras shoot 23.976fps, sometimes referred to 23.98 and sometimes simply called 24, which it isn't. To confuse things further many cameras claim to shoot 24fps but don't. They capture 23.976fps but record at 29.97 with what is called pulldown added to make up the difference of frames between 23.976 and 29.97. It uses a complicated method alternating interlaced and progressive frames in a 2:3:2:3 cadence. (There is also an advanced pulldown cadence that's 2:3:3:2, which can have the pulldown removed and be restored to 23.976 for editing.) Pulldown is the way movies are shown on television. The 24fps film is played back at 23.976, pulldown is added, and the result is broadcast at the standard 29.97 frame rate. This adds flickering to the image which we're used to watching. Those who come from Europe and watch US television often find the pulldown flicker quite noticeable. When an iMovie project refers to 24, it means something shot at true 23.976, not something shot 24 with pulldown added and recorded at 29.97.
    b. 30
No such thing, except maybe in computer animation. The correct frame rate is 29.97. iMovie calls it 30. It's not. An iMovie project is 30 when it's shot at the standard North American (and Japanese and Korean) frame rate of 29.97.
    c. 60
Again, no such thing. The frame rate is 59.94. Some cameras shoot this, quite a few professional cameras do. iMovie does not support it.
    x. native or not
No idea what that is, unless it's the frame rate they use in Borneo.
    a. ACVHD
Codec stands for compression-decompression algorithm. It's the mathematical formula that's used to calculate how the video is compressed. AVCHD (Advanced Video Compressor HD) is a format based on the H.264 codec using MPEG-4, which is another format.
    b. mpeg4
This is a format that can be used for acquisition or delivery. It's not a codec. MPEG-4 is used in AVCHD. It can also use other codecs.
    c. mpeg2
This is another, older format. It can be either HD or SD. It's most common usages are as the format for DVD disc encoding, and as the basis for HDV.
All of these formats, MPEG-2, MEPG-4, AVCHD, use what are called GOP structures or interframe compression. What that means is that a single frame is encoded, the I-frame, and the next (usually 15 frames) are made up of comparing the previous frames and also the next frame, the B and P frames. These long GOP structures are great for encoding, easy to compress, and widely used for acquisition in cameras, and delivery on the web and disc; they're horrible for production, because there are no individual frames. When you specify a frame you want to edit on, the computer has to do a whole lot of work to calculate and generate a complete actual frame where none really exists in the GOP structure, unless it happens to be that one in 15 frames at the start of the GOP. This is why most professional systems, especially high end systems, convert these interframe compression formats to intraframe compression formats. Here each frame is individually encoded and compressed. The files are larger but it's much easier for the computer and the application to calculate what you want to do.
    d. HDV (old, so probably not recommended)
    An MPEG-2 based HD format that's 1440x1080 or 1280x720. It's never 1920x1080.
    A. which of the above combination of types works well with iMovie 11?
    B. which camcorder meets these types the best (preferably a newer model, and preferably a Sony, Canon, or Panasonic)
No good answers to these. HDV tape and AVCHD work well with iMovie. All three manufacturers make cameras of these types. Though you can throw pretty much anything you want into iMovie (it's remarkably resilient), it prefers, like most editing systems, to work with I-frame based media. Both HDV and AVCHD get transcoded on ingest to the Apple Intermediate Codec. This is a high data rate codec used by QuickTime. It's pretty good quality by prosumer standards and easy for the computer to work with, but these are much larger files than the original media.
    Check here
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/cameras/en/index.html?lang=en_US
to see if the camera you're interested in works with iMovie.
I hope I have you thoroughly confused by now. Oh and by the way, it's changing every day. This answer will be obsolete probably by the time I finish writing it.

  • Recommendation on the best HDV Camcorder to buy?

I've just had my SONY TRV900 stolen and now need to purchase a new camcorder. I would like HDV, 3CCD and portability. I do some video work but don't need a full Ppr level camcorder yet. Can anyone recommend a good HDV camcorder with 3CCD and good quality output?

3CCD's is a must. Otherwise, you get a lot of chroma crawl, lower resolution, impossible chroma keys... etc... Progressive video looks a lot more like film, and it plays nice on computer displays which are also progressive scan. freeze frames look better too.
In reply to all here... if you can buy an HVX-200 instead... DO IT. Better picture, better post, better everything. Look of film is easily achieved with it too. NO capturing anymore either... backup on DVD's or FW drives if need be... it's a winner of a format, and just blows HDV out the door.
About the only HDV camera that competes is the Canon and only when you capture out it's HD port during the shoot and capture that material as something other than HDV IMHO.
The school I teach at part time, has 3 of these cameras, and abouty 6 HDV cameras, the students are fighting over the HVX's... they just work a ton better, and look a lot more like film. My favorite DV camera is the Panny 100a... this new HVX is it's big brother... same look, great balance to the camera, and all the manufacturers of the accessories of the 100a are implementing them for the HVX... It's the most exciting camera produced in the under 10k catagory in years I think.
HDV is so slow in rendering and workflow in post that it's a no brainer if your time's worth anything to you. FCP 5.1.1 is better at it than FCP 5.0.4, but it's still about 5 times rendering time longer than the P2 material is... P2 is a true HD format, where HDV really isn't... If you don't have a VERY fast mac, the rendering time will simply make it no fun to work with. Quad PPC or dual duo at least I'd think.
Prices are falling on this camera too now that there's a supply... check this: http://fotoconnection.com/vi-26412______Panasonic-AG-HVX200-1-3-quot;-.html?gclid=CJfZm6Omo4cCFTHTJAod8nhyJg

  • Which HD camcorder to buy???

I am looking to buy a new camcorder for HD recording. I see that Sony has new hard disk camcorder which is attractive (I have an old 8mm HI8 that has worked well for me), but I am looking for the best camcorder that currently works with FCE HD (tape or tapeless). I don't have an HD DVD burner yet, but would like some suggestions on the best HD camcorder for general use (family, around the house, and travel type applications).
    Thanks all!

XL H1 is nice, but for the price tag booo. I say the only real nice option is the interchangable lens. I'd maybe go with the Sony HVR-Z1U. I just got one and so far i like it. Anything that is 1/3 CCD or better is a great camera.
With the Z1U its big but not too big of a camera. The Lens hood is nice. You can quickly open and close the hood to protect your lens. The XLR inputs are nice and will come in handy.
As far as tapeless recording i would say NO. because i personally would like to have those tapes forever. With the hardrives you must keep the data on there and it does cost a lot. Nothing better than a raw footage tape. The 16:9 LCD screen is nice on the Sony Z1U.
I was using the Panasonic ADG30. It was great. So now coming from a 1/4 to a 1/3 CCD i can see picture quality increase. Along with the HDV.
The handle bar on the Z1U is nice too. great for action footage or low angles.
Again, i don't know a lot about cameras. If you get the Canon or the Sony, you will be happy. I just think the Canon XLH1 is overrated. Too big of a pricetag for the interchangable lens option.

  • Looking for the definitive answer on what Camcorder to buy!

Hello folks, I could really use your help.
I'm an avid Mac user in the graphic design world, and have an iMac as a home machine. I'm going out next week to buy a Digital Camcorder so that I can begin working with home movies of my family and such. I'm new to the camcorder world, and have discovered a wealth of information regarding the cameras available...and as a result am more confused than ever.
What I'm looking for is a Camcorder with a price tag not much over $600 that will allow me to shoot good indoor & outdoor video of my family and children, and that is easilly compatible with my iMac and the newest version of iLife on the market. I want to create DVD's from this, and store our home movies this way.
Can anyone tell me what camera fits all of these requirements? I'm looking at the Canon Elura 80 which I've found good things about, but would really like to hear from some of you with experience on the subject.
Any input or suggestions would be tremendously appreciated. My thanks in advance.

It certainly sounds like your harddrive is dying.  I would Immediately backup your harddrive to an external USB or Firewire harddrive Before doing anything else.  It just may save your data in time before you lose it all.
    Hope this helps

  • My Library has ten more songs than my iPod. How can I find out which songs are not syncing?

My Library has ten more songs than my iPod. How can I find out which songs are not syncing?
I recently had to purchase a new hard drive. Because the size of my music collection exceeds 140 GB, I stored all of my music on a separate external hard drive. When I exported everything back into my new iTunes library, I found that I had about 200 more songs than I had in the previous library. After deleting most of those extraneous songs, I was able to get my library close to where it was before. However, after syncing to my iPod Classic, I noticed that only 34,853 of the 34,863 loaded. How can I figure out which of those ten songs in my library did not sync to my iPod?
    Yellow12

It may be that the 10 songs are unchecked. To find them select songs view.
If there is a column Heading marked with a tick then click on it to sort by this column.
If the Column is not there then View > View Options and select the Checked column which will then display
Check the songs by putting ticks in the empty boxes and resynch. Now those tracks should go over as well

  • More Issues with 8.0.1 and 8.0.2 than ever had before

Since updating my iPhone 5S (T-Mobile) to both 8.0.1 and then 8.0.2 I've had more issues than I've ever had with any iOS in the past (with the exception of iPhone 4 running iOS 7, but clearly that is an older phone, not a 1 year old model like the 5S). Have tried resetting, powering off, etc too by the way.
Here is the list of things I've had coming up as issues:
    - Safari Video Playback (Constantly buggy, either never loads, or when it does scrubbing through video is like a broken record)
    - Graphical glitches with top screen (Clock / battery portion) always appearing layered over other programs when it shouldn't be.)
    - iMessage ( SMS and MMS to non-iOS users takes SEVERAL or MORE attempts to deliver even with 4G/LTE on)
    - Mail - When new mail messages arrive in inbox the Notification pops up DELAYED, along with the delayed alert sound (sometimes occurs in Messages/Texts)
    - Notifications pop up and sometimes stay on the screen longer than usual (is this a new feature / suppose to be helpful? It isn't.)
    - Keyboard Graphical issues (when typing in text boxes in emails or websites, the keyboard cursor becomes delayed and has to catch up with my keystrokes)
    - Overall slightly slower (again I know iOS 8 is optimized for whatever the newest hardware is out (iPhone 6), but is there really that much of a difference in hardware between the 5S and 6 that makes this version of iOS 8 so buggy on my phone?)

Hey Chris, thanks for responding, in my above post I mentioned my troubleshooting:
