More external hard drive woes.

Hi all,
I'm using an old Seagate U Series 5 (30GB) that I harvested out of an older computer along with an external hard drive enclosure. It's been initialized and formatted to HFS+ and is at the moment completely empty. However, when I try to transfer large files or large amounts of files (more than around 800MB), it stops at anywhere from 400MB to 1.2GB through and just keeps on displaying the progress bar with whatever estimated time it had left before. Nothing short of unplugging the drive will cancel the operation. This has actually happened with a different hard drive (even older, though) and I've used two different kinds of enclosures. Any ideas?

Shutting down your Mac without properly ejecting your drive (put icion in trash) can fry an external drive. I know, I did it! Maybe you'll have some luck with my tips.
Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that still didn't get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good! Also, here is Apple doc.#88338 on getting FireWire to work.
Here's some more FW tips.
 Cheers! DALE

  • External Hard Drive woes (possibly Time Machine related)

    Hello everyone,
I am using one of the partitions on my WD My Passport for Mac (1 TB) partitioned into two sepaprate partions (both Mac OS Extended Journaled)  of 500 GB each as my backup disk for Time Machine.
Now, Time Machine seems to work fine on it for some time. However, after a period of time (~5 hours) time machine stops working. Here are the relevant logs.

When this happens, the Hard Drive makes beeping noises (each time Time Machine tries to access it). It refuses to unmount, and Disk Utility refuses to either verify or repair the hard drive. Forcibly unplugging the hard drive and replugging it does not help either. It makes beeping noises for about half a minute and then goes quiet. However, neither is it mounted nor is it visible in the disk utility.
The only way I have managed to fix this is to plug the hard drive in another mac, where it mounts without any problem. I then run disk utility to verify the hard drive (on that mac) and then when I replug the drive to my laptop, it works. Until it breaks again.
The only other "error" related to my external hard drive that I have found in system logs is also pasted below:

I don't know what the problem is, but I would like to be able to use an external. I also have another external plugged in my computer (NTFS, and I have NTFS write enabled via http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/) and that hard drive works perfectly. Also, the problem was there before I enabled NTFS write so nothing was harmed in enabling NTFS write.
    System Info
OS X 10.7.3 (problem existed with 10.7.2) as well
    RAM: 8 GB
    Macbook Pro 15" (i7 2.2 GHz, 2011 model)

OSX is having trouble reading or writing to the drive.  That's usually hardware (the drive, port, or cable).
Try different ports, cables, and combinations of the two (a plug that works fine in one port may not make good contact in a different one).
Be sure it's connected directly to your Mac -- no hubs or daisy chains, and not a port on your keyboard.
Also, what Partition Map Scheme does the drive have?  (Check via Disk Utility - select the top line for the drive -- it should show at the lower right.)

  • ESATA external hard drive woes under Bootcamp

    Hi everyone,
I have just taken delivery of a early 2009 MBPro 17 inch and a WD MyBook USB/eSATA/Firewire external HD.
I am trying to use the MyBook with eSATA in bootcamp with a generic expresscard that utilises the Silcon Image Sil3132 chip. I'm only wanting to use it as a single drive with no RAID. The drive shows up and works fine when booting into Leopard but under bootcamp it is nowhere to be seen in explorer. I have installed the ATA controller driver and in control panel it shows up as it's own "app" (and even tells me theres a WD drive attached to it). It also shows up in Device Manager under SCSI/RAID controllers as "Silicon Image SIL 3132 Softraid 5 controller.
In the device info panel this is what i see:
Available controllers: SIL 3132 revision 1
Location: PCI bus 6 device 0
    IRQ number: 5 (0x5)
Device location: Channel 1 Target 1
    Type: Disk Drive
    Model: WD My Book
    Firmware revision: 01.00A01
    Serial number: blah blah
    ATA version: ATA/ATAPI-6
Current transfer mode: Ultra DMA mode 6
Host link speed: Generation 2 (3.0gb/s)
Device link speed: Generation 2 (3.0gb/s)
    Look Ahead: Unsupported
    Write Cache: enabled
But as for gaining access to the drive in Explorer, it isn't recognised.
    Am i missing something here?
I am really stuck with this, so if anyone can help i'd be very grateful.
    Cheers
    John

Where / how can i find that information?
When i "get info" in Leopard it just says it's formatted as "Windows NT File System"
It came formatted as FAT32 but i reformatted in NTFS. Leopard has read and write access thanks to Paragon.
Windows on the other hand can see it if it's plugged into the USB socket, but not under eSATA.
I was wondering maybe that the express card slot might not be fully supported under Bootcamp, meaning no matter what you plug into it the thing won't ever work properly?
The express card is an unnamed generic one with this chip: SiI3132 - PCI Express (1x) to 2 Port SATA300
    Drivers are here..supposedly: http://www.siliconimage.com/support/searchresults.aspx?pid=32&cat=3&os=4

  • IPhoto/external hard drive woes

I use a WD external drive to store my iPhoto library. iPhoto has lost the link to the library (I assume through a non-ejected disconnect), but also doesn't prompt me to find the library when I open iPhoto. I can get it to prompt find library by renaming the library it creates, but when I select the correct iPhoto library from my external drive, I can't click ok! It's positively nonsensical... I can create new libraries, I can select other folders, just not the correct one. Do I need to create a new library and just reimport everything?? How much data would I lose that way? Completely bizarre.

I can get it to prompt find library by renaming the library it creates, but ... I can't click ok!
The one thing you don't describe having done is moving the "com.apple.iPhoto.plist" file to the trash. Include that step with the above and you should be able to click "OK".

  • External Hard Drive Woes

I just the other day moved my 130+ gig. iTunes music folder to a portable external drive. I changed the itunes music folder location in the advanced prefrence, and restarted iTunes. Now, an apparently random, but quite sizable number, of songs won't play because of the exclamation point stating that the original file cannot be found. I know I could just re-import them all, but I would lose an extensive playlist library, as well as all of my import dates, ratings, and play counts. Is there any way to get itunes to recognize the files, or am I doomed to either "Find Song" for 10,000 songs, or have to lose all that info?

It would be wonderful if some way was invented to do track-file re-association automatically, but I figure it isn't easy..

  • Installation and External Hard drives.

    Hello,
I'm a newbie. I have installed Logic 9 directly on my I Mac. I have decided to buy one or more external hard drives and start saving. Is it best to reinstall logic on an external hard drive? Should I have a one external hard drive dedicated to projects only, Samples only? Any suggestions on configuration.
    Thanks!!
    Dave

    Hi
Logic has to be on your boot drive (which can be external, but... no real reason to do that, except for certain internal drive fixing operations via disk utility software.)
A 7200 RPM (or faster) drive is the way to go for working your projects. You can store your sample files externally also, but you'll need to learn the tricks and tips for doing that. When the time comes you can learn all of that here.
    Cheers

  • Mac external hard drive help

    Hey.........
I'm looking to purchase a 250 or more external hard drive for my mac. I really dont have too much money to spend on it. I've browsed http://eshop.macsales.com/... I found the following three can anyone recommend one more than the other?
OWC Mercury Elite Pro FireWire+USB 2.0/1.1 Oxford911+ Enclosure Kit - supports drives to 750GB!
OWC Neptune 3.5" Oxford 911+ FireWire 400 (1394A) Enclosure Kit
SIIG FireWire 800 2.5" HDD Kit - FireWire 800 hard drive enclosure for 2.5" IDE hard disk drives
Please help..I'm going to be editing videos using Final Cut Pro and I will be saving my videos on the hard drive I purchase.....Thank You

Edit to a dedicated internal SATA drive, not to a FW drive.
David, He can't use a dedicated internal SATA on a MBP, try as he might there just isn't room in that notebook for another drive.
OP, try the mecury elite or even better, an external eSata solution, that will free up your FW bus for your camera.

  • I keep my library on an external hard drive 4TB.  It's full.  Can I use more than one hard drive to keep my library on?

    Create a concatenated disk set
Increase storage space with a concatenated RAID set (also called “Just a Bunch of Disks” or JBOD). If you need one large disk, but you have only several smaller disks, you can create a concatenated disk set to use several small disks as one large disk.
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in Launchpad.
Select one of the disks that you want in the set, and then click RAID.
Click Add (+), and type a name for the RAID set.
Choose a format from the Format pop-up menu. Usually you’ll choose the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format.
Choose Concatenated Disk Set from the RAID Type pop-up menu.
Drag the disks you want to add to the set to the list on the right.
    Click Create.
    Exerpt from:
Disk Utility 12.x: Create a RAID set - Apple - Support
Note that the biggest CON to concatenated RAID configurations is vulnerability to volume failure. If either disk fails, the whole volume fails. If you choose this option, I would highly recommend backing up your music to a cloud service. There are very cheap per GB/storage, and some of the most reputable actually offer unlimited storage:

  • Can iTunes utilize more than one external hard drive at once?

A couple of years ago we had the bright idea to get a mac mini with an external hard drive and load it up with movies and such, so when we wanted to watch a tv show or movie, we could just scroll through the titles and pick without having to deal with the actual DVD (the mini is hooked up to a flatscreen tv). Needless to say, this monster has grown to epic proportions and we have since upgraded to 2 external hard drives (totaling 5 TB), and we now use another program that utilizes both hard drives without problem.
The issue I am having is that we bought an AppleTV tonight, and have not had any problems getting iTunes to see the movies in the "Movies" External HD, but the tv shows are on another External HD and they take up a little more than 345 GB of space. I kinda liked having the two drives separate, but was wondering if there was a way to make the mini think these two drives were just one? I know it is a strange question, but I can't think of a solution at this point.
Is there a way to tell iTunes to look in two locations for content?

I am wondering if this set-up will work if I daisy chain the external drives. My iTunes library is stored on a 1.5 TB external drive. I have about 350 GB of storage left. I have been trying to find a way to add a drive instead of replacing the drive with a larger drive. If I can daisy chain, this will allow me to add storage without losing another firewire port. I just want to make sure this all works before I attempt any changes. Thank you.

  • External Hard Drive(ERROR CODE 0) .DMG Back Up Issues. How to get more than 4gbs in .DMG back ups.

I am currently using a my external hard drive for my late 2009 Mac Mini, my brothers MBP and my sisters HP laptop. I have a Western Digital My Passport 1T external Hard Drive to back up all are information. I formatted it to work on mac and pc and its on the "MS-DOS(FAT) setup at the momment. Im trying to back up DMG files from my HDD hard drive in my computer to the External Hard Drive to pass them onto my brother. I understand the whole part of me getting the "Error Code 0" where i can only put 4gbs of storage for that. I wanted to no is there a way for me to format my external hard drive for it to work on a Mac and a PC but for me to also transfer my .dmg files with more than 4gbs of that storage to my external hard drive?
p.s Im running on OSX 10.6.8 and the DMG files are alittle more than 4 gbs. From 5-10gbs. Thank you for all the replys. It helps me out and others in the Apple community out!

Hi, Steve. Your proposed procedure is just fine until you get to this point:
...reformat the WD to be Mac friendly *and reformat in FAT32* ...
Reformatting the newly-reformatted Mac-friendly drive as FAT32 will, as you say, simply put you back where you were before, but with your data on a different drive. Omit that step, and you'll have a Mac-friendly drive that you can copy your data back onto.
If you normally work with files exceeding 4GB in size, you won't want any hard drive in FAT32 format. If for some reason you'd like all your external drives in NTFS format, download and install the NTFS-3G driver, which will enable your Mac to read *and write to* that disk format.

Yes, you have WD software installed  REMOVE IT !!
WD has warned its customers about their huge mistake that their software doesnt work on Mavericks and causes data loss.

Not without voiding the warranty. No publicly available device is officially supported by that USB port.

  • How can I open up more space on my external hard drive for Time Machine?

I have a 500GB external hard drive that I use with Time Machine. I believe I have half designated for Time Machine and the other half to use as an external drive to put whatever I want on it. My issue is that now my Time Machine back up needs more than 250GB of space.
How can I make more space available on Time Machine and less for the external half (maybe split it 400/100 for example) or just designate the whole 500GB for Time Machine?
Am I going to have to reformat the hard drive? I'm trying to do this in a way that I'm not going to risk losing what might already be on Time Machine...
I'm not sure how well I'm explaining this. Hopefully someone can help.
    Amanda

I would also suggest you get a 2nd, much larger hard drive, partition it if desired, move your data to it, and start a 2nd Time Machine backup on it. You can set Time Machine to alternate between the 2 drives by adding the new drive to System Preferences/Time Machine. If you want to make a copy of your current backup on the new drive, you can do that using the Disk Utility Restore tab. If you chose to do that, make the copy first since using the Restore tab erases all data on the drive or the partition.

Thanks Shootist007, by blockd files I mean files that I have changed to blocked and when I tried to move then for the first time, I had to unblock again. I am trying to backup my pictures, my songs and other files like word documents and excel tables. First I put all of them as blocked, what caused the first problems on trying to move them. Then, I've unchecked the block option and if I try to move one by one, there is no problem. The issue is to move all together, because it gets stuck in the preparing to copy files step. Anyway, if I cannot do all by once, I'll do it one by one, event though that was not suposed to happen if we are talking about technology, right? Anyway, I thank you again for trying to help me!
