More Filevault issues

Here's the history-
I have five accounts on my Mac, one for me (the administrator) and one for each of my four children. One morning I went to log on as I always do and the logon screen went into a feedback loop and never logged me on. I had to reboot to get out of my login screen. I tried to log on to one of my kid's accounts and had no problem. I had been getting a "startup disk almost full" warning, so thinking that this might be the problem, I cleared out a lot of music/photo files from my kids' accounts. Then I tried to log on again to my account. Still no luck. I went to the discussion forum for OSX and by doing some fancy work on Terminal, as suggested by a posting, I was able to log in to my account. But, my desktop is as if I just purchased my computer. There's nothing but the default applications on the dock and none of my files are to be found. I have been running Filevault for the past six months or so without a problem. I can't get Filevault to turn off. It goes through 15 minutes of decryption just to tell me that an error occurred in copying the files! I can find the sparseimage created by Filevault, but it won't mount. I've tried everything suggested on this forum but no luck. I tried to access the sparseimage file via another account using Pseudo and Terminal commands, but it didn't work. I just keep getting "file not found" in Terminal and Disk Utilities run through Pseudo can't get the sparseimage file to mount, so it won't verify or repair.
Anyone have suggestions for getting the sparseimage file to mount so I can get it open? How about help getting Filevault to turn off?
Thanks,
Fitmom

Hi mom, the best solution would be to create a new admin user account and restore your data from your most recent backup.
The damaged FileVault image is encrypted data within a disk image file. None of the repair utilities will be able to do much with it if you aren't able to enter your password and have the volume available in its unencrypted form for repairs. So if it won't mount then back-up the sparseimage to DVD or another hard drive just in case technology makes it possible to recover later and get on with your new <empty> user account.
System Preferences > Accounts > "+" to add a new user.
Click the Security button on the user account screen and check the box at the bottom "Allow user to administer this computer"
Because FileVault images are not generally recoverable, you should at least consider disabling it for all the other accounts on the system as well or setup a regular, frequent backup for each sparseimage file.
Live and learn.

  • Load More Messages issues

I saw some posts about load more messages issues, but nothing seems to be the same as my problem. I'm new to iPhone, so I must be missing something obvious.
I was looking at my emails this morning and deleted all but 5. I responded to an email, but didn’t send because I forget change the server port for outgoing mail that our server requires. So I went into settings and changed the port. I went back to my inbox but can no longer see the messages I saved, instead there's an option that says “Load More Messages” with a note below it stating “5 messages total, 0 unread”. I have no other emails in my inbox. When I click Load More Messages, nothing happens. I can’t figure out how to get to those emails. I tried cycling the power on the iphone, that didn’t help.
I'm getting new messages normally. My mail is set to show 25 recent messages. Even if I change this, it still displays the "Load More Messages". As an extreme test, I set it to show 200 recent messages, went back to my inbox, hit the "Load More Messages" option, but that didn't help. What's more, I have a full signal and I'm running 3G.

Hey man, your problem sounds similar to the one I'm having. I can't load more messages on both of my email accounts. But I think I might have figured out the problem. I recently re-installed my hotmail account and when I was looking through my,"Unread" inbox the, "Load more messages" command was working just fine. So I was continuing to go through my messages to make them read (because if your like me, I don't like to have any messages, "Unread." So when all my messages were read there was about 80 in total, and my setting was set to show the 25 most recent. So I backed out of the mail app, did a few more things and came back hoping that there would only be 25 showing with 0 unread and the ability to load more if i wished. Well, there was 25 showing but the box with the load more messages command was gone and no matter how many times I tried to refresh it would not come back.
So my theory is this; there always has to be an unread message in your inbox for the load more messages to work. Sorry about the long post. I'm going to test this theory out, knowing my luck, it won't work at all. Good luck bro!
    Peace.

  • From Tiger To SnowLeo With a FileVault Issue (Migration)

    Hey!
So, my old MacBook Pro's Logic Board/ Video Card ?? was melting down little by little. During that time (and for awhile before) I had been making bootable backups (CCC clones). I had made about 4 clones on 4 different drives - kinda ridiculous but... Due to some space issues with my original 120GB that came with the 15", I had started to save my iPhotos' database separately to free up more space HD (this will come in later).
While trying to build an all-in-one, all up-to-date clone I had suffered a freeze/ improper shutdown on multiple drives (LogicBoard freezing/ Video card over heating?). Why across multiple drives? Well, after I suffered a bad shutdown with iTunes and thought my library would be messed up... I kept mounting bootable clones to copy it's iTunes Library so I could save the most current iTunes Library I had along with most 'current work' bootable clone. I should have known better to keep mounting an encrypted sparseimage when the conditions where high that it would freeze up again and not log out properly. But maybe I am luck with FileVault...(read on).
Anyways, new MacBP - I connected a boot clone during the installation to migrate files over. Did it, then couldn't log into my account. There is no mistake with the FileVault password or the Master Password for that matter. What I then did is I a fresh install of Snow Leopard and just have been using a blank (non of my previous files/ settings etc.) to access my different boot clones and do various disk checks/ utilities with Data Rescue 3/ TechTools Pro 5 and DiskWarrior. I can't get any of my bootable backups to boot off of - even though I have performed a bunch of things like verify disk, volume rebuild etc. I thought I was effectively locked out but I then added the FileVault keychain master password certificate and using an admin account on this new Snow Leo allowed it to be trusted for this machine. So, now I can safely open my encrypted sparseimage - and I have verified a bunch of the files are there and I can read them, can even choose Snow Leopard's iTunes to use my old iTunes Library and play all current stuff. This is great because this is the latest bootable clone that I have and I can open up the sparseimage no problem.
Ok, so finally my question... in this situation, what should I do to create a new Snow Leopard install and migrate my old account over to Snow Leopard. I don't want to run into permission issues etc. Oh, with regards to permissions... I had copied over my iPhoto database to an unencrypted backup drive while I was logged into FileVault. So, my iPhoto database isn't encrypted but what about it's permissions?
Should I just do what I did last time (migration assistant at installation) but under a new admin account in the new Snow Leopard move over the FileVault certificate that allowed me to use master password to open the FileVault? I hear the best way to move over FileVault accounts is to switch off FileVault and do the upgrade... but that's is the thing... I can't boot into these clones and switch it off. I can see the file system when logged into Snow Leopard.... and I do repair permissions but I can't seem to boot from it. If booted in I would probably run into the not enough space issue. To solve the space issue of un-FileVaulting, you make a new sparseimage, move over your contents etc. I hear - but you can't do that in Snow Leopard because it uses sparsebundles right? I can't seem to boot from Tiger install CD on this new Mac either.
Sorry, long winded but trying to give the most information. I feel like I am so close... I have access to all these files I want to move over.. how can I move them over with out missing invisible files and creating permission hiccups? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
And I think I am done with FileVault.... too many close calls....

Yes.   I've found that works best.  Especially if the drive is external, since external connections are typically slower, and Spotlight loves to eat up space going back and forth.   Time Machine will eat up as much space as it can, and typically needs drives at least twice the size of the original hard drive that is being backed up, if being backed up in full.   So unfortunately there is a lot of empty space that is needed for smooth operation.

  • N8 Belle more of issue than fun

I am using Belle for more than a month now and came up with these issue.
    1. when i am using foursquare app with mobile data just connected, it hangs the device.
    2. Once I disconnect from a Wi-Fi network, after a second or so all the icons reinitialize for all the screens.
    3. Using app stop to kill all the apps excluding clock sometimes hangs the device.
Due to these issues i have to restart the device once a day to keep it working properly and which is very annoying. Are these normal issue with Belle or something terribly wrong with the device.
    Thanks.
If I have helped at all, a click on the White Star is always appreciated. You can also help others by marking 'accept as solution'.

Also i found concerns in the existing camera with worked great with Anna update. I have default camera then camerapro and cameralover.
    4. When using camerapro with 'single'  AF it shows red box for initial 2-3 tries and then focus correctly.
    5. The quality of autofocus for default camera has also decreased and gives blured snaps.
Not sure anyone facing the same issues, but these are major applications and feature for N8.
And if they perform like this then it is a pain.
If I have helped at all, a click on the White Star is always appreciated. You can also help others by marking 'accept as solution'.

  • More Major Issues with ZFS + Dedup

I'm having more problems - this time, very, very serious ones, with ZFS and deduplication. Deduplication is basically making my iSCSI targets completely inaccessible to the clients trying to access them over COMSTAR. I have two commands right now that are completely hung:
    1) zfs destroy pool/volume
    2) zfs set dedup=off pool
The first command I started four hours ago, and it has barely removed 10G of the 50G that were allocated to that volume. It also seems to periodically cause the ZFS system to stop responding to any other I/O requests, which in turn causes major issues on my iSCSI clients. I cannot kill or pause the destroy command, and I've tried renicing it, to no avail. If anyone has any hints or suggestions on what I can do to overcome this issue, I'd very much appreciate that. I'm open to suggestions that will kill the destroy command, or will at least reprioritize it such that other I/O requests have precedence over this destroy command.
    Thanks,
    Nick

To add some more detail, I've been review iostat and zpool iostat for a couple of hours, and am seeing some very, very strange behavior. There seem to be three distinct patterns going on here.
The first is extremely heavy writes. Using zpool iostat, I see write bandwidth in the 15MB/s range sustained for a few minutes. I'm guessing this is when ZFS is allowing normal access to volumes and when it is actually removing some of the data for the volume I tried to destroy. This only lasts for two to three minutes at a time before progressing to the next pattern.
The second pattern is categorized by heavy, heavy read access - several thousand read operations per second, and several MB/s bandwidth. This also lasts for five or ten minutes before proceeding to the third pattern. During this time there is very little, if any write activity.
The third and final pattern is categorized by absolutely no write activity (0s in both the write ops/sec and the write bandwidth columns, and very, very small read activity. By small ready activity, I mean 100-200 read ops per second, and 100-200K read bandwidth per second. This lasts for 30 to 40 minutes, and then the patter proceeds back to the first one.
I have no idea what to make of this, and I'm out of my league in terms of ZFS tools to figure out what's going on. This is extremely frustrating because all of my iSCSI clients are essentially dead right now - this destroy command has completely taken over my ZFS storage, and it seems like all I can do is sit and wait for it to finish, which, as this rate, will be another 12 hours.
Also, during this time, if I look at the plain iostat command, I see that the read ops for the physical disk and the actv are within normal ranges, as are asvc_t and %w. %b, however is pegged at 99-100%.

  • Network printing, more driver issues

A simple HP990 connected to an IP print server is a disaster under OS X.
    1) HP provides drivers that work wonderfully - as long as it's USB (wired)
    2) HP drivers dissapear if ADD PRINTER cannot physically find printer during install
    3) GIMP drivers are latest - and they are almost 2 years old
    4) No 2-way comm w/printer - this is NOT an IP issue
    5) Dozens of printer features are unavailable to OS - show ink etc
    6) Duplexing is just plain broken
    7) Although HP drivers are installed, they will NOT be available to you if printer is not connected via a WIRE. This is rediculous.
    8) IP "Find Printer" does not work. Cannot even find Linux printers, much less Windows, netBeui, or Wireless printers.
    9) If you force printer model, you cannot use proper HP drivers. Must use GIMP.
    10) Once printer is installed/configured, you CANNOT change ports. Again this is redic.
I was told OS X was VERY problematic with printing. It's the achilles heel in an otherwise wonderful OS environment.
Come on, Apple. Fire the printer guy over there and get this stuff straight.

THe HP deskjet driver does not support printing to a DeskJet 990 connected to a generic TCP/IP print server.
In Mac OS X 10.0 and 10.1 the printer drivers had to enumerate the communication protocols that they supported. This requirement was removed in 10.2 but many of the printer manufacturers still provide drivers that are tied to specific protocols. The HP provided DeskJet 990 driver support USB and AppleTalk. It may also support printing over TCP/IP to an HP JetDirect server but I've never tried that.
The Gimp-Print drivers are written so that they are independent of the communications protocol used. The Gimp-Print drivers will work over USB, Bluetooth, LPD, IPP, AppleTalk, socket, SMB, and other protocols. The Gimp-Print project is very active. It is currently closing on the release of version 5. The project has been renamed Gutenprint. You can find more information here: http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/
    1. HP drivers work over USB and over TCP/IP depending upon the printer model. For example the Photosmart 2510 driver works great over a wireless connection using TCP/IP to that printer.
    2. I'm not sure what is being described in this bullet item.
    3. The latest version of Gimp-Print is v5.0rc2. As noted above the project is now called Gutenprint.
    4. The HP drivers support bidirectional communication. The Gimp-Print drivers do not support bidirectional communications yet but they will likely do so soon.
    5. Some drivers support low ink detection and some do not. The drivers that do support low ink detection show it in the print dialog and in the desktop printer. Most drivers also come with Utilities for checking ink levels and these are linked to by the desktop printer.
    6. Duplexing works fine using the HP drivers. Are you having a problem with duplex and the Gimp-Print driver?
    7. As discussed above the HP drivers can not be hooked to a communications protocol they do not explicitly support. This has nothing to do with wired versus wireless.
    8. The Add printer browser shows locally attached printers, AppleTalk printers, Bonjour TCP/IP based printers, and printers shared from Linux CUPS servers. Other printers can be found by hitting "More Printers."
    9. Again, yes, the HP drivers can not be used over a generic TCP/IP connection such as LPD, IPP, or socket. The Gimp-Print drivers do work over these connections. So do the HPIJS drivers. The HPIJS drivers can be found here: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/9979.
    10. This is true. If the TCP/IP address changes on a printer then you need to re-add the printer.
    I hope this is helpful.

  • Serious FileVault Issue....  Please Help!!

    Hi,
I have found FileVault very useful on my G3 PowerBook, not only for security, but also to save the time and effort of using disk utility to clear up unused space on the hard drive (from time to time when you shut down, filevault prompts you if you want to clear up the unused space).
I mentioned this to my dad and suggested he used it on the G3 iBook, using Tiger 10.4.5 (we have had a number of hacks, nothing too serious, but people using the internet connection etc). He proceeded to set it up and it worked fine, but for some reason required a login password on start-up. This machine had never had a password and was annoying the people who used it as they had to spend half a second entering it and wait for it to fully load from there!! (Time is precious!)
For some reason, the option that allows you to 'automatically login as XYZ user' was greyed out. We thought this might be to do with the FileVault application, so preceded to turn it off. This appeared to be fine, it produced the screen that said it was going to take 16 minutes to switch it off, the time counted down (fairly randomly) until it got to 5 seconds, it hung for about 2 minutes and then automatically re-booted. This was expected, but the issue begins now. The standard log in screen appears, with the only account (lets call it XYZ) and asks for the password, on entering the password a message appears saying 'You are unable to log in to the user account "XYZ" at this time' the only option being ok.
So you click ok and get returned to the log in, I know the password is correct as if I enter anything else, the screen shakes at me (as it does if you enter an incorrect password). My only other options from here are to try again (the same thing happens) or click back and then sleep, restart or shut down.
As I said, there is only the one user (this is also the Admin user) so I can’t even log in on another account.
Does anyone have any idea why this might be? Or any suggestions of what I can do to access the computer or bypass the log in screen?
G3 PowerBook (FireWire), G3 iMac, G4 Tower, iPod Mini, 60gb iPod Photo, 60gb iPod Video   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I've been using FileVault for a long time with no problems whatsoever. As with any software package, there are going to be problems from time to time - that is why you BACK UP any and all important data. FileVault is not intended to back anything up or keep is safe from any failure other than security. FileVault keeps the data from prying eyes - that's all it does. It does it very very nicely in that you can copy the "username.sparseimage" file onto another computer and use the password to open it!
I do not want to see people learning about Macs and FileVault's capabilities to get the wrong impression here. This is a fantastic utility that works wonderfully. If you have data that you cannot afford to lose and do not have it backed up - then that is 100% your fault. If you really needed that data, you would have backed it up on an external drive (copying the sparseimage file) or one of dozens of other methods to keep the data safe. I recommend laptop users to turn on FileVault (remember to set a Master Password!) if they have any sensitive information on their computer - but you have to take responsibility and make sure that data gets backed up. Any protection you take is nullified when a drive fails, or you get a power spike - unless you back up.
Please remember the role each piece of software has and not expect it to do something it was not designed to do.

  • More Crashing Issues

I posted this on September 12th, and concluded I needed a new power supply.
I purchased an Enermax EG475P 470W PSU, since that seemed to be the likely conclusion of my problems.
I went from my old PSU with these specs:
Ultra ATX Switching 400W, Model #WIN-400PS
    +3.3V = 15.0A
    +5V = 30.0A
    +12V = 17.0
    -5V = 0.6A
    -12V = 0.6A
    +5VSB = 2.0A
    To these specs:
    Enermax EG475P 470W
    +3.3V = 34A
    +5V = 40A
    +12V = 33A
I am still getting the crashes that I explained in my first thread.
Before buying the new PSU I had tried everything I knew to do.  When I got these crashes even after installing the new PSU, someone told me to try underclocking my card to see if it might be a heat issue.  I underclocked it more than 10%, with no changes.
It isn't a CPU heat issue either; I ran Motherboard Monitor 4 while stress-testing with a game and the temperature never went past 61C.  That isn't ideal, I know, but I read threads on this board from people saying their Prescotts are running 70C, 80C, or even higher.  According to Speedfan, my four case fans are all running at 100% RPM.  At idle, the case temperature is 34C.  Under load, it never goes past 37C.
I don't really know what to do.  Any ideas?
    Intel Pentium 4 Prescott 2.8GHz HTT w/ 800MHz FSB
    MSI 865PE Neo2-PFISR motherboard (BIOS ver. 3.8)
    2x512MB Kingston PC3200 DDR SDRAM @ 400MHz
    Maxtor 6Y120M0 120GB HDD
    Diamond Viper Radeon 9600XT 256MB (Catalyst 4.9s)
Creative SB Live 5.1 (driver ver. 5.14)

I included them in my first post, but here they are anyway.
    Intel Pentium 4 Prescott 2.8GHz HTT w/ 800MHz FSB
    MSI 865PE Neo2-PFISR motherboard (BIOS ver. 3.8)
    2x512MB Kingston PC3200 DDR SDRAM @ 400MHz
    Maxtor 6Y120M0 120GB HDD
    Diamond Viper Radeon 9600XT 256MB (Catalyst 4.9s)
Creative SB Live 5.1 (driver ver. 5.14)
    Enermax EG475P 470W
    +3.3V = 34A
    +5V = 40A
    +12V = 33A
    And here's the problem:
    Quote
Sometimes it will crash as I described in the other thread, the video and sound locks up, nothing responds, have to hit power button.
Other times it does something different. For example, while playing BF1942, when the server changes maps, each client does a CD check during which my screen resolution changes to some low resolution, then back to normal resolution (which is 1280x960x85, btw). Every few times* it does this, my system restarts itself. Back to the POST screen. My computer restarts normally after this happens. When I get back to Windows, I get a popup message saying "Windows has recovered from a serious error. Please send an error report, blah blah." I got these crashes before upgrading my PSU as well, but thought that the PSU was causing it. I thought that the resolution changes + CPU load from loading a new map was putting too heavy a load on my system, which my cheap PSU couldn't handle, and thus shut itself down. But these crashes are continuing after upgrading to a PSU which should be able to handle just about anything.
*It isn't a consistent pattern. Sometimes it will restart during the first map change. Other times it works fine for four or five or six times, then it will crash.
I also listed the Blue Screen error message in this thread too.  You sure you read the right thread?

  • CS3 Web Prem - Leopard w/ FileVault Issues

    All,
Be aware that there are update issues with CSEWP when running on Leopard if you have FileVault enabled. I use FileVault for corporate security purposes but suffice it to say, this has become a significant pain in my side because of the following:
    - Adobe Auto Updater cannot run for some reason. Adobe isn't sure why and they apparently are aware of this but they don't have enough information internally to isolate the issue and resolve it.
    - Some updates hang and potentially can corrupt the program. After manually applying the Acrobat Pro update 8.1.2, I was no longer able to disable the Acrobat PDF plugin for Safari so now I'm stuck with having to launch Acrobat every time I view a PDF in Safari as opposed to Preview.
BE AWARE: Adobe stated to me that CS3 is actually not fully compatible with Leopard and even though they've had updates, the core of CS3 Web Premium was not created to support Leopard. They are basically just porting over legacy apps and tweaking them with updates to "run better" on Leopard. They probably should not have said this to a customer but, the cat is out of the bag and I thought everyone should be aware.
As far as updates are concerned, It appears to be a permissions thing with Auto Updater but here's the work around...
Run the "Auto Updater" as usual and when it starts to hang during the update, just select the 'stop and resume later' choice and it will retain all the updates in the folder: [Macintosh HD]/Library/Adobe/Updater5/Installs/... (product folders) > manually apply each update from there.
Also note that Adobe is aware of this as being a problem and their recommended solutions (trial and error) have been the following:
Uninstall and reinstall - ineffective due to permissions issues with Auto Updater
Uninstall as Root then reinstall as Root - ineffective, my FileVault impedes this.
Run in "safe mode" has no effect on the permissions issue
Manual updates are the only solution and if you run into bugs along the way, the torture is to completely uninstall and reinstall using the CS3CLEAN scripts so you eradicate all traces of Adobe from the Mac before reinstalling.
    And the fun begins...

Jim this is all old news.
Adobe software has never worked with file vault and it is recommended that you turn it off to update your software. This has been a fact of life ever since file vault was introduced with Tiger.
Unless you are out on the road and are carrying sensitive material on a laptop I see no reason to have file vault on constantly.

  • More skipping issues...

i'm so upset with dvdsp, i feel like every dvd i make ends up skipping in the clients' dvd players. i shot hdv, edited in native hdv 1080i60, used compressor to make a best quality 150 min ac3 and m2v, and used dvdsp to burn and it plays fine in my macbook pro but skips and stops playing in my ps3 AND xbox 360. what is my issue here? bad dvds? all my software is up to date and i'm using a hv30 and lacie 7200 external firewire 400 drive.

Don't jump to conclusion . Meters on players are terribly innacurate. Beside 3.7 is really low - you couldn't be happy with the quality Im sure at that rate! Re-do the encode again but make sure you've set the correct bitrate based on the length of your source. use a good bitrate calculator to get your target anf peak bitrate settings. Try another batch of good media and play the disc again. Try more than one player if need be.
    here's a good calculator:

  • Filevault Issue!!!!!

a few months ago I accidentally turned filevault on. A large amount of disk space has been encrypted. I currently have 6 gigs left on my hard drive. I really want to turn off filevault but it gives me a message saying it requires 4092.06 gigs of space. I never had that much space to begin with. For christmas i got a 320 gig hardrive and i have moved some data (over 10 gig worth) to the ext. hardrive and deleted the original data. However when i restarted my computer, my hardrive failed to recognize the free space it should have acquired. I did not run file vault when i restarted b/c i did not want more files to get encrypted or the files on my ext. hardrive. How can i free up space and turn filevault off without loosing my files? any help would be much appreciated...

Follow the instructions in this article to turn off FileVault when that error appears.

    (1) *Only applications* can show the "_Open in 32-bit mode_" option.
If you are using "Get Info" on some other filetype, not seeing 32-bit is expected. However, you should still see the Get Info window.
    (2) Test as follows: select any application's iCon by clicking once on it in your Mac's "Applications" folder. Then hold down the "⌘" key and tap the "i " key once. The Get Info window should open.
    (3) Having used the process in (2), if you still see "... nothing comes up ..."
Does that mean that no Get Info window opens?
If you are uncertain that you are seeing a Get Info window, here is a picture of one:
      (Yours will contain different information.)
    (4) If you do not see any "Get Info" window, try using the *File > Get Info* menu command instead of the "⌘ i" keyboard shortcut.

    I do not understand this.
    (5) If this paragraph is still related to your +Get Info+ problem, see the suggestions above.
    (6) If this paragraph relates to "download issues", please provide some explanation of the problem.
    (7) If this paragraph is still about help with More iChat Effects problems, my best suggestion is you carefully follow the developer's uninstall instructions to remove this third-party add-on if it will not work with the Mac OS.
If you want keep trying to use MiE with SL, take a look at this recent thread about the same 32-bit and color-inverted problems you mention for other suggestions:

  • HP ENVY 6t has many issues with USB headphone, Bluetooth and more serious issue

HP ENVY 6t doesn't work with USB headphone, unfortunately. could u let me know how to fix it?
Bluetooth mouse has been working for a day, it suddenly stopped working. Having checked the PC bluetooth connection, which said "Working properly".   Could you let me know how to re-connect, or re-work?
"Not complete shut-down" blue screen issue right after receiving the HP PC when I closed display to be in sleep mode.
I see the "Safe mode" "...." or "Normal mode" screen always.
The HP PC is not stable UNFORTUNATELY.
Even if just brand new HP PC, there seems to be many issues.

I would recommend using this document for your mouse: http://goo.gl/XDRRy
And using this document to troubleshoot your headphones issue: http://goo.gl/hV9fu
Most of the time with USB headphones, you have to download the driver from the manufacturer before they will work properly.

  • Who wants to have fun problem solving a more complicated issue?

My main problem is I don't have permissions to access a Time Machine back up of all my files.
Here's what happen: I was looking one day at how much space I was taking up with my 2009 MBP. I had about 209 GB of "other". Curious as to what this "other" was I ran Disk Inventory X to find out, but I ran into a problem. I inherited this computer from my mother who at some point turned on FileVault. Well FileVault wouldn't let me find out what that "other" space was, so I decided to try to disable it. But I could not disable it without 117 GB of free space. Unfortuantely all this "other" space took up so much that I couldn't free up enough space. I'm not exactly sure how, but somehow I finally figured out that it was a Sparse Disk Budle Image that was taking up the space. I did some research to try and figure out what this was and in my research determined it was a copy of basically everything on my computer. I had a back up of everything so I thought I could delete it all and be fine. So I did. When I did that it basically made my account unuseable because my info was wrong and all kinds of crazy stuff started happening. So I jut decided to re-image it with Mountain Lion. Now that I have re-imaged it all everything is new again I am trying to get my information back on. I understand that if I back up from Time Machine it will probably put back on FileVault, thus throwing this situation into a loop, so I don't want to do that. I really just want my 20 GB of photos back from my iPhoto library, but everytime I try to access my User account on my external hard drive it tells me I don't have permission. I tried to go into Disk Ultility and and repair permissions but it is greyed out. I'm out of ideas... I'm not computer illiterate, I actually work for an Apple reseller so I know my stuff on this. But i think I messed everything up when I deleted the Sparse Disk. I don't know. Can someone help me?

The sparsebundle was the backing store of your FV home directory. When you deleted it, you destroyed all your data. Legacy FV has poor compatibility with Time Machine. The sparsebundle is backed up only when you log out. You'll have to find the last such snapshot and restore from it.
