More Home Sync woes

I pretty much gave up with Home Sync before we even got Snow Leopard. Automatic syncing is still a complete disaster and so I adjusted the prefs in WorkGroup Manager so that those managed Macs have it available, but only manually. In that way, I can (in theory at least) sync any Mac to its network home which makes it easy to set up that user on another Mac, which will then get the latest files.
This has worked for a MacPro, but a couple of MacBooks still insist on trying to sync automatically. Of course I cannot change it on the client Macs themselves and in WM the settings for all the Macs are the same, Always control but everything is set to manual. As I said, this is fine for the MacPro, but as I type this, the MacBook Pro is busy trying to sync umpteen Gb of data I just don't want. Of course there's no obvious way to simply tell it to stop either.
Undoubtedly the most useless and fundamentally flawed service of OSX Server, but has anyone had this same problem of not being able to get the client to understand that it should NOT be sync'ing? Any solution?

You wont connect at more than 150mbps unless you have 40mhz enabled.
On 20mhz the max my HH3 puts out is in reality about 144 but more often than not 72.
Channels 1, 6 and 11 near me are full of BT WiFi , Sky and other subscribers.
I find the HH3 (mine is also the B) rubbish. I'll be ditching it for a Netgear WNDR router soon enough.
If 1,6 and 11 are congested then I wouldn't even consider 40mhz mode.
If you understand how this works by requiring an additional channel you can see why.

  • Home Sync Error

    Hey Guys,
My users are receiving the samw error "Home Sync Error" with their PHD set up. It not all of them, but I haven't found a pattern that is causing it though? No relation in workstations etc.
There are various errors like "Unknown Error:[1]rename('/Volumes/...." and also one for deleting a file. Most of them seem like temp files but the .GlobalPreferences is also in there?
Has anyone else had any experiance with this issue, or can shed any light? Any help would be greatly appreceated.
    Regards,
    r00tb00t

Well I posted here not giving to much info so I should probably give some more. This is a post I posted else where I have copied!
    Here are some more details:
It would seem that when a user logs on their Portable Home Directory is mounted under the /Volumes directory (in my case /Volumes/groupname/username/). We all know this already. We also know that with stuff like this and mobile homes etc clients make preferences (like .GlobalPreferences) on a per-computer basis, if you look in myhomefolder/Library/Preferences/ByHost we can see many .GlobalPreferences files each ending with the MAC Address of a machine we have logged onto. So for my students there are many entries for the different machines they work at.
It would seem (as far as I can tell) that when a student logs on we create a temporary .GlobalPrefernces file in our mounted home directory at /Volumes/teachers/james/Library/Preferences/ByHost/.fstemp.PHD-R-R9FKAzSqm_-james52hfaStqfe4.noindex
(Note here that during the time I or anyone else if logged on, this file doesn't actually seem to exist its not in the folder?)
And when we logoff we rename the temporary file to replace the actual .GlobalPreferences file located on the server, which for my example user was /Volumes/teachers/james/Library/Preferences/ByHost/.GlobalPrefernces.0011223344 5566.plist
So, when my students logoff they get:
    "Unknown error:[1] rename('/Volumes/teachers..../.fstemp.PHDR_R9FKAzSqm-james52hfaStqfe4.noindex', '/Volumes/teachers...Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist')".
So my question is, why would that be? Am I on the right lines? Does any one have any idea why this is happening?
All input is greatly appreciated. Thanks for the help so far.

  • Home sync thinks there are duplicate names when there are none

Home sync keeps complaining about some directories having the same name except for some capitalized letters which is complete bogus.
Example: I have a directory called "W3C Css geniales layout" and there is no other directory or file with the same (stupid ) name anywhere on my computer. The other example is "Moviessamlonlab". in this case there is another directory called "Movies-Tony". I suspect that homesync has problems with Spaces and hyphens in directory names. Renaming the directories helped. I still think this is a bug since any directory name that I can create (without the os complaining) is valid and should be considered valid by any other program! I have an intel core 2 duo macBook with OS X 10.4.10

    Hello there,
I'm having the same problem here,
    tried deleting ~/Library/Mirrors/*,
tried changing/resetting to "me":wheel the user/group of the files on the client AND on the server,
tried changing the permissions to 775,
tried a "touch" on every file
    tried a chflags -R nouchg
all of these amounts to the more files are touched on the server, the more conflicts occur.
The weird thing is that files ARE synchronized both ways correctly,
I just keep getting a Synchronization conflict on EVERY file (59014 files) at every background sync...
    Any help here ?

  • 10.5 portable home sync rules not being respected on the client...

Portable home syncing is working great for me on my Tiger server and clients, and I'm an old hat at Apple server and OD.... However in my test environment for 10.5, my client machines reuse to respect the rules that I've set in 10.5 Server Workgroup Manager for portable home syncing. I was hoping 10.5.2 would fix this for me, but no luck....
I can tell that the clients are bound to the OD and are reading the MCX settings from the server, because I can change the sync time interval, and that is being reflected on the client. WGM is set to NOT allow settings to be merged with user's settings, so I can eliminate the client settings as a variable.
Both Login/Logout and background sync are effected by this problem.
Is anyone else having this issue?

Bruce's solution above does indeed work. However, I must have stared at his answer for 20 minutes trying to figure out what he was talking about. Undoubtedly, my inability to initially parse his solution comes from my more basic understanding of OS X Server. Since there are likely others out there with this same Home Sync problem and my same level of experience with OS X Server I wanted to give Bruce's answer again but with more detail.
The problem, as explained by the original post, is that Home Sync settings for a user or group aren't necessarily respected. For example, if I were to open Workgroup Manager (WGM), select myself as a user (Berylium), click Preferences, select Mobility from the Overview tab, and select the Rules tab I would be in the Home Sync preferences. If I tell the Login & Logout Sync tab to Always do what I select and then I uncheck the Sync at login and logout checkbox one would expect that when I log in or log out I would not see a Home Sync dialog popup and perform a sync operation - but I did.
The issue as Bruce explains occurs because of another setting I have enabled, Background Sync, and a quirk (bug?) in Leopard Server. I have Background Sync enabled, set to Always, and told to sync in the background my ~/Documents and ~/Desktop folders. Leopard Server, it seems, performs the following operation when I login or logout:
    1. Is Login & Logout Sync enabled? No, ok skip this part.
    2. Is Background Sync enabled? Yes! Ok, sync the background sync items now even though this is a login or log out.
Clever, Apple. Ok, now that the problem has been explained let's get to the solution.
    1. Open WGM, select your problem user or group, click Preferences, and select the Details tab
    2. Click the +, navigate to /System/Library/CoreServices/, select ManagedClient, and click Add
    - At this point, at least in my installation, several more items appeared in the preference editor list.
    3. Select Home Sync in the preference editor list then click the Edit button (looks like a pencil)
    4. Expand the Always list item
    - Obviously, this is where some people's solution could begin to differ from mine. You may want to edit items in the Once or Often list items.
    5. Click the New Key button, a New Item will be created and selected, click New Item and select Sync Background Set During Login from the list.
    6. Change the Value item for Sync Background Set During Login from automatic to dontSync
    7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 but select Sync Background Set During Logout
    8. Click Apply Now followed by Done
Now you should be all set. Thank you Bruce for the solution to this problem and I hope someone else finds my more detailed explanation helpful.

  • PHD and Home Sync Error

I am running Snow Leopard server 10.6.4 and all clients are running Snow Leopard 10.6.4.
When a user with a PHD network account opens a datafile such as Word or Excel, a home sync errors ocurrs. As soon as the file is closed the error disappears but it is very frustrating to have these messages pop up whenever a file is in use by the user. I don't recall this being a problem under Leopard.
Is there a setting which can disable these pop ups when the user is user the file?

  • Mobile account settings & home sync

I've learned recently that introducing a MacBook into a corporate Windows world is easier said than done, but I've been fairly successful. One problem that has occurred recently (maybe due to a recent update) is that I can no longer access the Mobile account settings in my Accounts preferences. I setup the first MacBook Pro around the first of March. I successfully assigned a networked location as my home folder, and it synced just fine.
Now I've setup a second MacBook Pro today and found that I can't access the Mobile account settings in the Accounts preferences. Going back to my original MacBook Pro, I get the same thing... greyed out. I click on the Home Sync button in the toolbar and I click on "Sync Now" and I get no response. I see that it shows my last Home sync was on 3/4/10.
I don't have an OSX server here, we're using Active Directory on a Win2008 server. No specific rules have been assigned to these machines, but the accounts are Active Directory accounts.
Anyone have an idea why I can't use the home functions? These are new 15" MacBook Pro models with 10.6.3 software.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
I got the same problem with our second Mac. But after activating it in: System -> Library -> CoreServices -> Menu Extras and then HomeSync.menu, it became editable.
Does someone know how to change the server folder that the mac will sunc with?

  • Mobile Account Home Sync Duplicate Files

We use profile manager, with an OSX mobility profile with home sync, for management of our OSX devices, combined with AD sign on with "create a mobile account on sign on.
For many of our users, they are experiencing files are duplicating with .network extension on the end, and that deleted files are being re-synced back to their device.
Setting the keep most recent option with the sync conflicts appears to fix the .network file issue, but the returning of deleted documents, appears to be repeat occurring.
I haven't found any documentation regarding the issue on how to resolve it, and I am currently in the process of trying to replicate the issue myself.
Is there a work around or fix to this issue?
Appears to be happening across different versions of OSX. 10.8 - 10.10

Hi, the only workaround I know of, is to uncheck the library folder from syncing, ANYTHING running live while the home folder is syincing (MS office for example, it's DB is in your docs folder, will cause a sync error, as well as iphoto.. etc.. the only other way to fix this, is to set it to sync manually at login & logout. I wish my issues were that easy

  • Home Sync Not Working! Please Help!

    Hi Everyone,
So I have a Mac Mini running Snow Leopard Server and two clients three clients all running Lion. Everyone has Portable Home Directories with File Syncing which syncs up documents and the desktop folder This seems to be working fine except I am running into one problem. I have a iMac and a Macbook Pro and i often will do work on my laptop and then want to swtich to my iMac and pickup where I left off with my work. I have used file sync and portable home directories to keep my iMac and MacBook Pro in sync and this seemed to be working fine up until a few days ago. For some reason, If I make a change on my Macbook pro like say I add a folder and have it sync, it will often times not sync that file and rarely it will, however if I were to drop a file onto the network volume, it would appear on my MacBook Pro right away. My iMac seems to be working fine however. If I create a file, it will show up on the server, and vise versa so I am wondering if there is a way to reset home sync or what I could to make it work correctly. I have tried going into workgrop manager and telling it to never sync and then reenableing the sync but this didn't work and I have also tried deleteing all the files and then bringing them all back and again the same probelms happen. Also repaired permissions on all machines. Any suggetions on how I could fix this?
    Thanks,
    -Mike

Tried reinstalling windows 7 and iTunes on a brand new SSD disk. Also updated iPhone iOS to 6.1
    I am getting desperate.

  • Home sync not working

I have problems with my snow leopard server, 10.6.8.
The student folder permissions show that the owner has read & write but the home sync fails. Says the share isn't available.

I have the same issue on the Lion 10.7.3 server.  Still working on a solution.  Got me stumped so far.  I can see the share and access it for read/write through finder - however, when I try to sync the home folder through the menu item I get the same error.  Weird.

  • Home Sync errors with Chrome files

Recently a bunch of users in our office have been getting constant Home Sync errors, most commonly with Google Chrome files. File Sync opens and lists a number of errors syncing files including:
    Favicons
    History
    History Index 2012-02
    History index 2012-03
    Network Action Predictor
    Shortcuts
    Web Data
among others. Any idea what's going on? Are the files locked by Chrome or something so Home Sync generates errors? Did something change in Lion or Chrome in the last few weeks because this never happened previously?
    Lion 10.7.3
    Chrome 17.0.963.65

I ended up having to enforce this from our Open Directory server. You could uncheck "Library" from your homesynced folders on a per machine basis but that will have other consequences because things you would like to have backed up/synced won't be.
From our mac server: Workgroup Manager->(Computer group name you want to manage)->Preferences->Mobility->Preference Sync->At logout+manually
So I don't have it sync on login or in the background, only when they are logging out, hopefully warnings won't show up or it will be less intrusive.
Homesync still has a lot of rough edges, I wish there was a cleaner option

  • Home Sync never completes on a logout from OSX Server

I have a Mac Pro running 10.6.4 and MacBook running same rev level. Seemed to have successfully configured Open Directory on the Mac Pro to manage mobile accounts. Mac Pro OD also is configured with AFP file sharing turned "on" and /Network share for storing portable home folders for the mobile accounts.
When logging into a managed mobile account on the MacBook, Home Sync fires up fine and completes its work. Created a file and saved it. Log out and Home Sync places file back into the Mac Pro repository for the Home Folders (under /Network). All seems well, until....
I decide to do some work on the MacPro with the managed mobile account. The login completes fine. I work with the file I originally created while on the MacBook. The problem occurs when I logout from this session. A message pops up indicating, and I paraphrase, that a Sync would not be necessary if I were to use /Network location. I click ok and the system proceeds to perform a Home Sync that then runs forever (ok all night or 8 hours after which time I click cancel).
Any ideas on resolving this problem? Thanks!

Please disregard my earlier post. I found what my problem is. I had the incorrect IP address setup on my client (long story).

  • Mobile Home Sync damaged my settings. iCloud Keychain only partially restored. What can I do?

Mobile Home Sync (I'm using Mobile Accounts from OS X Server) on my desktop suddenly started syncing what it should not, all stuff that is normally excluded from a PHD sync, such as contents in Library. I stopped it, but not fast enough to prevent all damage. One thing that was damaged was the 'lock screen with password on sleep' setting and apparently as a result of that (or a combination of that) the iCloud Keychain was gone.
I was able (after some trouble, the Security & Privacy tab of System Preferences came up blank at first) to set the password on unlock from sleep, then I reattached the iCloud keychain. But the keychain only has a small part of what was in there and many passwords of web sites seem to be lost. Also interestingly, when trying to login to this community, some sort of iPhoto/Flickr login/password was suggested.
I also have a laptop that was not damaged. Is there a way I can get the keychain from there and use it to repair the keychain on the desktop?
PS. Apple: can you please after years and years of neglect repair Mobile Accounts and Portable Home Directories? iCloud is not only far from complete for that (a half-ready solution if at all) and it also means your data is synced outside of your domain (which is not always legally allowed). Mobile Accounts is so broken that I have started to use Synk to make sure some parts (such as the iPhoto Library) still can be synced to the server. And (as the above shows) it is quite capable of damaging the data on your system (rather a definite no on my list).

Adding to  this: the autofill information in Safari is lost as well. Can I copy that over from another machine?

  • Mobile Home Sync Issues

I just setup a 10.5 Server and 10.5 client - Home sync is working, however my login sync is set to do ONLY ~/Library - it seems to search the entire home folder, and syncs what ever has changed - I've tried reseting this and haven't had any luck. It seems to happen on any of the 3 accounts I've created so far. Anyone else having this issue? I'm in the learning process, but have to roll out a similar setup for a client pretty soon - I can't have my login/logout times this long .
    Homes are setup via AFP

There's a bucketload of new preference keys in com.apple.HomeSync.plist that affect what syncs when:
    <key>syncBackgroundSetAtLogin</key>
    <string>dontSync</string>
    <key>syncBackgroundSetAtLogout</key>
    <string>dontSync</string>
    <key>syncPreferencesAtLogin</key>
    <string>sync</string>
    <key>syncPreferencesAtLogout</key>
    <string>sync</string>
    <key>syncPreferencesAtSyncNow</key>
    <string>sync</string>
    <key>syncPreferencesInBackground</key>
    <string>dontSync</string>
I think that you want to set syncBackgroundSetAtLogin and syncBackgroundSetAtLogout to dontSync.

Hi.  I understand that you need help playing videos on your television from your Droid X and I will be happy to help you further.  From your homescreen go to Menu-Media Share-Start to guide through the steps to connecting it to your television.
Please let me know if this works.
