More iTunes woes

I thought that if I synced a little more frequently I could avoid some of the problems iTunes throws up (eg wanting to wipe my iPad clean for a laugh).
I plugged it in today and it's just spent ages transferring gigabytes of apps to my Mac .... that are already on my Mac and have been for ages!
Why is it doing that???

"If possible, I'd like a solution that doesn't require reinstalling iTunes or updating iTunes, because I get an installation error message with iTunes whenever I try to do that (great program)."
That's not exactly a realistic expectation. Try and use Microsoft's Cleanup Utility and then reinstall Quicktime/iTunes:

Make sure it's a new and fresh download from:

If not mentioned in the articles, make a new user account in Windows XP and see if iTunes opens. That will tell you if there's something funky in your main account (if the new user works), or if you have a system-wide issue.

  • More iTunes-Credit Card Woes

Having searched the forum but for a similar problem, but not finding it, I'm hoping maybe someone else has experienced this and can point me to a solution.
The problem: Can't register for an iTMS account.
The reason: When registering, after entering my CC # and billing address, I get an error saying that "...the credit card is not valid in Canada."
My twist: My CC is issued by a US bank, but my billing address in in Canada (I'm living in Canada while I attend graduate school). Of course, I use my CC here regularly without a hitch. I even used it to purchase my PB from the Apple Canada store online. I don' know for sure, but I'm thinking that Apple's database sees my CC as a US card, and thus won't let register an account for iTMS Canada.
The kicker is that I can't register an account for iTMS US either, because my billing address is in Canada. I've emailed iTunes support, but it's been of no help at all. I get a canned response about my billing address needing to be in the country I'm trying to register an account in.
So, to summarize: US credit card + Canadian billing address = no iTunes account for either country. WTH?
Anyone else had this problem? Any ideas? Thanks...
    PB G4 Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Sorry, but the iTunes Terms of Sale for the Canadian
iTMS say that they cannot accept cards issued by a
bank outside of Canada. So I think that unless you
can get a credit card issued by a Canadian bank,
you're going to be out of luck and will have to buy
prepaid cards (they're apparently available through
Walgreens in Canada) and use those.
Hmmm. Thanks - I read the iTMS Terms of Service, which doesn't mention the requirment that the card must also have been issued in Canada, but never read the Terms of Sale, which as you pointed out, clearly state that non-Canadian cards are a no-no.
Alas, that does leave us trans-nationals in a bit of a pickle, but maybe I'll try the prepaid card route.
    Cheers...

  • Sharing two or more iTunes library

    Hello,
I have just bought an Apple TV2, but I have all my films in an external hard drive.
I have created a new iTunes Library on the external drive, and I tried to make a second shared library (my Mac and now the external hard drive). How can I see both libraries in the Apple TV, so I can have the music and all videos and films?
Is it possible to share more than one iTunes library in the same Apple account?
How can I solve my problem? Put all the iTunes stuff in the new library (external drive)?
If its the only way, how can I export the actual mac iTunes Library, to the external drive?
    Best regards
    Tiago B

You can only view one iTunes library at a time on Apple TV. So moving all your iTunes files to one library would enable you to view all your music, videos, and films.
    http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/easiest-move-itunes-library-external-drive/
To move your collections to another location, open iTunes “Preferences”. Use the menu “Edit – Preferences” (Windows) or “iTunes – Preferences” (Mac). You can also use the shortcut key combination: “Ctrl + Comma” (Windows) or “Command + Comma” (Mac).
Go to the “Advanced” tab and click the “Change” button for “iTunes Media folder location“. While you are at it, check the “Keep iTunes Media folder organized” and “Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library” boxes.
Browse to the new location where you want to put your collection. Create a new folder if you have to.
After you click “Create“, iTunes will update the library.
Now you have assigned a new location to store your collection, but the multimedia files are still in the old location. To move them to the new location, you have to consolidate them. Go to “File – Library – Organize Library” menu (similar under both Windows and Mac).
Check the “Consolidate files” box and click “OK“. If you’ve organized your files in the iTunes Music folder before, the second box will be greyed out.
Then the waiting game will begin – iTunes will copy all the files inside the iTunes Music folder to the new location. The process could take a while depending on how large your collection is.
Now that your collection is safely stored in the external hard drive (or another location that you chose), you can delete (some of) the files at the old location to free up some space in your hard drive. You can keep your favorite songs/movies so you still can play them even without the external drive.
Another point to remember: Even though the multimedia files are in the external drive, iTunes stores the information about them in the iTunes Library file in your local hard drive. So don’t delete the iTunes Library file.
    What Will Happen Now?
With a larger empty space in your laptop’s internal hard drive, you are convinced that moving your multimedia collection out was a good idea. But you also realize that bringing an external hard drive everywhere you go is a bit impractical. The question is, what will happen if you open iTunes on your laptop while the external drive is unplugged? You will get this error message every time you want to play a file that doesn’t exist in the local hard drive. Then an exclamation mark will appear next to the item.If you still keep the items that you want to play inside the local drive, click “Locate“, browse to the location, and you can play them without any problem. If not, click “Cancel“. You don’t have to do anything because this issue will be automatically resolved the next time you plug in the hard drive. If you add new music or movies during the unplugged period, you can always consolidate those files to the external storage later.Another possible path to take is to create another iTunes library for your local multimedia files. You can do this by holding the “Alt” button when you open iTunes, You will have the option to create a new library.
Give a specific name to the library so that you can easily tell the difference between the one that points to the local files and the one that points to files stored in the external drive.
Pressing “Alt” while opening iTunes will also let you switch between iTunes Libraries easily.

  • I want to take my ipad to hospital, but its only a 16gb can i use an airport to watch more itunes content?

Ive gota 16gb ipad 3 with wifi and cell, but I cant justify data at $10 a gig for watching tv and movies while im in VA hospital. Can I use an airport with a drive attached to store more of my movies or am I relegated to using a laptop and syncing every few hours...
I thought NAS might be an answer but my browsing suggests that Its not simple. I just want to watch want I own on iTunes already. the hospital has a 50mb a day wifi you can pay for but that's no where near enough for any video etc
on previous visits I've taken a small tv and my apple tv and streamed from the laptop but that's a lot of stuff to take and the hospital doesn't like you using too many electronic devices at once. I thought maybe the ipad could stream stored stuff from an airport if its iTunes? but I don't want to spend $400 to buy a 3tb airport if it wont work

No, it won't work.. the Airports are not media devices.. they have no brains .. no media extensions.. and itunes must be running on a computer.
You can however watch movies from storage but not with itunes..
See how people use tools like VLC to get around Apple's built in iTunes limitations.

  • More iTunes Store Issues

Last night I tried to download a free TV show from ABC's Million Hit Lowdown (Desperate Housewives / Remember) - it downloaded 1.9 MB within the first few seconds and then stopped. I tried pausing the download and restarting a few times, restarted iTunes several times, then gave up last night and tried this morning and it is still stuck in the same place. Last night I was curious as to if I could download anything else with any problems, so I purchased a song and it downloaded fine (yet at the same time, the TV show download was still stuck). I have a cable modem and generally TV shows download fairly quickly. Last night was the first time I used the iTunes store with iTunes 7.

I noticed tons more memory getting chomped by itunes 7 than ever before, esp. during downloads. Could that have been the issue here? (though I notice you're running G5 dual, so probably not)

  • No More iTunes Store?

I read an article on HipHopDX.com that Apple may be forced to give up a larger percentage of their iTunes Store sales to higher up music companies/corporations, which would force Apple to raise their current prices in order to still be a profitable company. Apple has threatened that they would shut down the iTunes Store before raising the prices for their customers. So this will be interesting to keep an eye on to see what happens. I hope the iTunes Store is not closed, and I know Apple doesn't want to close it either because I'm sure they make a lot of money from the store. If anyone hears or see's any updates on this, please reply with the information because I would like to know what's going on if I miss the news about it!

    Hey Phil,
Believe it or not, there was a resolution to this issue roughly 24 hours after this story was first mentioned by a good number of news outlets.  I'm still rather surprised though that the follow-up story wasn't given nearly as much attention as the initial "knee-jerk reaction" made by the press.
Based on information that I've found, it looks as though the federal Copyright Royalty Board froze the royalty fee due to songwriters at 9.1 cents per song for the next five years.  Neither party involved (Apple or the Recording Industry Association of America) appears to have been overly pleased with the decision, but spokespeople from both sides seem to have admitted that the ruling should prove to be beneficial.  A good compromise means that no one involved gets everything that they want, I guess.
If you'd like to read more on this story, you should be able to find the official Associated Press article by searching for "Copyright board leaves royalty rate unchanged."
    Hope this helps you out!

  • I cannot make more iTunes Accounts.

I've done many iTunes Accounts for family members with the same computer and today, i wanted to do one, and it always gives me the same error to conact support. I do not want to go to the website because i've gone before and it's sh*t. How can i make an iTunes account without any problems from errors? I use Paypal as the paying method.

        Nelcris,
We want to welcome you Verizon Wireless. The iPhone 6 Plus is a great phone. You can contact 2 people at the same time and then merge those calls. If they call someone and then merge those calls you can have more people on the line. The most that you can call out is 2.

  • More mail woes

    Hi all-
I have been having a great deal of pain trying to get the "mail" to work on my IPT. I use Charter and have got to the point when I press the mail button, a screen comes up that says "Inbox". The little spinning wheel at the top spins awhile then I get the error message The connection to the server "mail.charter.net failed. If I press "Inbox" I get a message that says "load 25 more messages.... but no messages are ever displayed. What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks-
    DMitzelfeldt

    Hi!
If you are using "other" on the IPT for MAIL then you are probably going thru the same frustration I was with the "connection to server" failure message right? So I called both Apple and my ISP and neither could figure it out, Apple said it just won't work with my ISP, case closed. Not so fast I figured it on my own, here's what I did and it works fine now:
    1. Connect IPT to your PC
    2. In iTunes go to the INFO tab on the IPT screen
    3. Scroll down to "Advanced" and check "Mail Accounts" on.
    4. Sync your IPT
    Disconnect IPT
Now check your Mail settings on the IPT, there should be one account.
Here's what I have and strange as it seems it works fine.
    POP Account Information
    Name: My Name
    Address: My e-mail address
    Description: e-mail address again
    Incoming Mail Server
    Host Name pop.ISPNAME.ca
User Name: My ISP User Name
    Password: My Password (******)
    Outgoing Mail Server
Nothing is filled in for any of those options - all blank
    Advanced
    Everything is off!
    Try that and good luck!

  • Itunes woes

It's getting to the point were I am scared to add any more music to my iPod 5g.
I've had so many problems with syncing that I have done resets on numerous occasions, even going back to factory settings, three times. The problems started on my PC in iTunes 10, and have got gradually worse, and is no better on my brand new Macbook Pro, things like: stuck in steps 1, 2, 3, 4, and so on (this happens consistently), songs missing, album art missing.
People have been complaining about syncing problems for many months now. Why aren't Apple doing anything? Perhaps they are trying to force people to buy all their music from them.
I have been using Apple products since the 1980's; I never thought I would grow to hate them. Perhaps it's time to move on.

Did you already repair permissions using the Disk Utility program on your MacBookPro?
Did you already consolidate the iTunes library?
File -> Library -> Organize library -> Consolidate files?
How much space is left on your device before you are trying to sync? Is the "other" section bigger than 2GB? If yes, try to restore the iPod to get it back to a normal size again. This is the place where damaged files are stored as well.
Did you set it up as new device to rule out a software issue?

  • Ios7 beta - no more itunes radio

I have ios7 on my iphone 5 and was able to listen to itunes radio before, but it recently disappeared. There is not longer a tab for it at the bottom of my music app, and does not appear in the more tab.  any ideas how to get it back? (it seems to have been replaced by the Genius tab.

  • More ITunes 5.0 problems

when i upgraded to iTunes 5.0 i ran in a few problem.
First of all i can not add some mp3's in to the library, i recieve an error message stating i do not have privledges to add music, however i have checked all priveleges and they are fine. I only get this message with some music, not all. My iMac at home has iTunes 4.9 and it allows me to add these mp3's.
Secondly, i am having trouble altering album info, such as album names, album art and changing some track titles. This only began when i upgrated to 5.0 also.
if anyone can help me with either of these issues it would be very appriciated. thank you.

I am having the same problem as above, I have uninstalled itunes, and erased all the files i could find that seemed to have anything to do with it, i went into safe mode, and tried to set permissions. i have 5.01, and it worked for a few days, and then just started having the message, The iTunes Music Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file. I can write to that part of the disk, i have done it. When i reinstall the program it works fine untill I add my music again. If I create a test account it will load fine, but there is no music in it, so That is not a good test, and my music is not on that account, so i cant add it to test it there, Please help me.

  • Ipod and itunes woes

"Attempting to copy to the disk 'ipod' failed. The disk could not be read from or written to."
iTunes 7 on my G5 keeps giving me this error message when I transfer music to my ipod. However, if I remain persistent and continually drag and drop the perceived "trouble song" the ipod eventually accepts it. I never have had this problem before iTunes 7 and my ipod is a 30gig photo ipod. It's really frustrating since I'm trying to move 70 songs over and I have to do it one-by-one. iTunes tells me that the iPod is up-to-date. any suggestions?

i had the exact problem as you. have you tried using a different usb port? these were the steps i took:
    1) reset iPod.
    2) restore iPod on my laptop iTunes (because it wasn't working on my g5).
    3) then i kept trying to sync the iPod with iTunes on my g5 (because that was where my main music library was), but i kept getting the message: "The disk could not be read from or written to." i was using the usb port at the front of the g5.
    4) then i tried a different usb port. the first one i tried was on a usb hub. i manually added a few songs to the iPod. IT WORKED! then i switched to another usb port on the back of the g5. IT WORKED there, too!
    5) so i sync'ed the iPod to iTunes on the g5. a few times during the sync, i would receive that same message: "The disk could not be read from or written to."
    6) so i would safely eject the iPod, then reconnect, and re-sync all over again until the iPod was completely updated. a little bit of a pain, but at least my iPod is functioning again (after being dead for a couple of weeks.)
    hope this helps.

  • Is it possible to use the account details on 3 or more iTunes accounts? e.g. if giving 2 iPads as presents, each iPad having it's own appleID but with the same payment/card details?

I bought 2 x iPad 1 as a gift and already have one myself. I want to be able to provide them with the means to use iTunes.
Is this possible or does each account need its own payment/card details?
I don't want to assume that its currently possible as this could flag up as a fraudulent event.
    Thanks

For what it's worth, you posted this in 2011, and here in 2014 I am still having this same issue. Over the last two days, I have had to unlock my apple account 8 times. I didn't get any new devices. I haven't initiated a password reset. I didn't forget my password. I set up two factor authentication and have been able to do the unlocking with the key and using a code sent to one of my devices.
    That all works.
It's this having to unlock my account every time I go to use any of my devices. And I have many: iMac, iPad, iPad2, iPad mini, iPhone 5s, iPod touch (daughter), and my old iPhone 4 being used as an ipod touch now.  They are all synced, and all was working just fine.
I have initiated an incident with Apple (again) but I know they are just going to suggest I change my Apple ID. It's a simple one, and one that I am sure others think is theirs. I don't want to change it. I shouldn't have to. Apple should be able to tell me who is trying to use it, or at least from where.
    Thanks for listening,
    Melissa
