More jpg file corruption

I've had another jpg file corrupted in the same manner as before and this time the file hasn't been touched recently by anything but LR. My second copy was also corrupt because I "back up" too often. Fortunately, it's easy for me to get files back from my internet backup, which is written only once. To get to my CDs or DVDs would require digging in a closet.
To me this brings a lot of issues to the fore with jpg handling, both what I do with them and what LR does with them. First, if you are going to rewrite files frequently (I only write metadata on demand, not automatically) then you have to know how to do it safely! On my side, it may be stupid to write it out -- nope, not, because I have to in order to edit in PS and retain the metadata. I have almost innumerable LR backups and the metadata is in there. I have considerable experience now in plopping in an absolute original file and LR happily applies everything to it. Hum. I'm forgetting the PS edits which would not be backed up with this plan.
The existence of 1 to 1 previews makes it very slow to SEE a problem in LR. I haven't used these files for months until the 9th when I started working on them. The first day or so it was grinding a lot, obviously making previews. So the good preview of this file had to be made on the 9th or a bit after so the file was OK at that time. In fact, everything looked fine until I decided to edit a copy of the file in PS. It stumbled and flickered the screen and then created a preview with only the top third or so of the file intact and the bottom part "faded." These appear to still be (almost) valid jpg file, but the content has been damaged.
I have used jpg files for years and I don't remember a time when I've had jpg file corruption. I may have forgotten an instance, but it doesn't come to mind. I've had 3 or 4 them now with LR.
These jpg files were created from scans and I have manipulated them to put the capture date, date digitized, and some global type information. I use exifer, a product that's been used for many years by many people (and not updated recently). If exifer is a problem, why only a handful of corruptions in thousands of files?
It's difficult to have a sensible backup plan except to keep the originals somewhere really safe. Even with metadata writing turned off by default, these files churn. I cannot keep every version of jpg files. And keeping the old files for a short period does not help because bad files don't show up in LR under many circumstances because of the preview files.
I don't know if this is relevant but I never had this happen with LR 1.0.
This is very worrisome and I'm going to get grouchy soon! You guys with RAW are really lucky that LR doesn't write to your files! I'd now love to have an option of a sidecar file which I could write to the jpg only when I'm ready to and have a way to check that the resulting file is still intact.
Of course I haven't proven there isn't an issue with my disk drive, but I've now proven it to myself that there's a very high probability that LR is corrupting jpg files when writing out metadata. I would like to hear if others using jpg files have had corruptions.

Hi, I too also have just experienced jpg corruption. It was a jpg that had been taken several years ago and had not been edited at all. The bottom left hand corner had been transposed from the right hand side. The result of this was the whole bottom 1/5 of the picture was shifted to the right. Also the color of the shifted portion was slightly different from the rest. This is the first jpg corruption in Lightroom I have seen. My backup was the same but fortunately I had a copy on DVD. I am using Windows version of Lightroom 1.2, tried 1.3 and decided to go back to 1.2
Does anyone know if this type of corruption only happens to jpg files. Would it be worthwhile marking them all read-only. I plan to check my other jpgs to see if there are any more corruptions. I mainly shoot RAW now and convert to DNG

  • Jpg files are becoming corrupt

I am a photographer with thousands of photos on my external hard drive. Over the past month or so, I have lost access to many of my jpg files. The icon no longer appears with a thumbnail of the photo... only the icon appears with the title of the file. I can't open these files with the Preview, and my Photoshop can't open them either. The message I get is, "Couldn’t open the file. It may be corrupt or a file format that Preview doesn’t recognize."
    Questions:
    1. What can I do to stop this from affecting more of my photos?
    2. How can I recover the jpg files that are lost?

Leopard should be able to read and write to the Fat32 drive. However some programs like Aperture do not support Fat32. Not sure if that's also a problem then for Preview.

Were you successfully reading and updating over a period of time and then noticed you had a problem with 'empty' files or has it been this way since you attached the PC drive to your Mac? If it just started happening, what were you doing with those files or any files on the drive? It may not be the files, but possibly the directory that is at fault and can't find the file content.
Just for your information if you ever add a new drive or reformat the drive to be the recommended Apple format, ensure it is partitioned GPT (GUID Partition Table) and formated HFS+ (Mac OS Extended Journaled). Of course you'll want to copy everything somewhere (do you have a PC that might successfully access the files?) to back things up before you reformat!

  • JPG files become corrupt after Exporting in LR 3

Does anyone have any idea what would cause
my JPG files to be corrupt after I export my edited Raw images in LR3?  There are no problems with the Raw file, but once I edit them, apply what ever settings to them in LR I need, I export them as JPG to the same hard drive but in a sub folder where the raw files are, they will not open in photoshop or anywhere else. They are corrupt or lacking data????   When I upload them to my proofing website, there are colored streaks all through the image.  Now, I noticed that when I go into that folder of RAW images, and delete the .xmp files, I have to start over, but it fixes the problem.  So, now, I can't use .xmp sidecar files to save my editing. I'm fairly new to LR, so any suggestions would be great. I did recently upgrade my system to OS windows 7.  Everythign was fine till I had to reinstall everything on my computer...and I also changed hard drives. I upgraded to a Terabyte drive moving all my images from a 500G to the terabyte.  Could that cause my sidecar files to be corrupted?????
    Thank you!!!!!

I doubt that the XMP files have anything to do with this, as Lightroom doesn't use these files when it creates an exported file.
It sounds like your hardware may be the culprit; these types of corrupt files are often caused by a failing hard drive. Some corruption may have happened in the transfer from one hard drive to another; or the new hard drive has some sort of problem.
Can you hook up the old hard drive again and see what happens to the photos there? Open one of them and compare it to the photo on the new hard drive.

  • Bridge CS5 is Corrupting Raw and JPG Files Right Before My Eyes

I am using Bridge CS5 on a Mac to work on Raw files from a Canon camera.  The files all looked good in the cameras review, and looked good when downloaded to the computer then the files started to corrupt and become unusable one at a time as I watched.  They became all white or lines of color.  Not all of them corrupted yhough (about 225 of 1100 did though).  I eventually worked the uncorrupted files and even turned them into JPGs and sent them out.  The next day I pull up the pics in bridge to see if they are still bad.  All of a sudden files I opened and worked on yesterday started to corrupt one after another.  Both the JPG and Raw files are corrupt and unusable even though they worked yesterday.  It only happens when in Bridge.  What is going on?  This is riduculous.
    Terry

Thanks for responding.  What happens is I highlight a large group of files then click on open with Bridge or in Bridge I go to the subdirectory with the files.  All the files are in a filmstrip on the left side of the screen.  All of a sudden the file that I am viewing becomes corrupt (that is it turns into multiple horizontal lines of colors.  Then I can watch as it happens to one file after another.  I would compare it to when you quickly view film strips that were just uploaded and the initial thumbnail is blurry and then slowly all the thumbnails get clear as they process.  But here they appear to already be fine thumbnails but then turn into the files with horizontal lines or sometimes just 30% or so so of the pic is visible and the rest is white or gray.  When I try to open it the file cannot be opened because it is corrupt.  It happens to both the RAW and the JPG file (I shoot in Raw+JPG).  The first day it happened to about 200 of the 1200 files.  So I was able to process the 1000 good ones in Raw convertor and create JPGs with no trouble.  The next day I open all the files in Bridge again to see if the bad ones are good now and files I had already opened and were perfectly fine in RAW converter start to corrupt one after another like the ones did the day before.  So I doubt it is the card or hardware it only happens in Bridge.  Bridge must have the capability to do something to the files.  It isnt making XMF files so thats not it, it is actually corrupting the RAW and JPG files.  Have you ever heard of that.  I found another forum with what sounded like the same issue to someone who had a Canon:  http://forums.adobe.com/thread/645620
But this happened to Windows and I use MAC.....but I do use a 7D like them.  I still wonder if Bridge just doesnt work well with Canon 7Ds or something like that.  The above thread never found a solution.  Maybe someone from Adobe has heard of this from others and discovered a reason or solution.  Until then I cant trust Adobe products at all....which really sucks after how much it cost me, but whole shoots lost is worse, I guess.

  • Fixing corrupt JPG files

Is there any good software out there for fixing corrupt JPG files?

Corruption damage in a .JPG entails data loss and the JPEG format does not contain redundancy, so there's no way to recover what's lost. Usually if the damage is found towards the end of the file, you can "recover" the good part by truncating it. If you want to do it interactively, you can try using software such as [The Gimp|http://www.gimp.org>, or its (very) expensive brother, Photoshop.
To do it automatically (batch mode) you can investigate if any of the tools in the [Image Magick package|http://www.imagemagick.org/script/index.php] helps. Note that these are command-line Unix tools.

  • JPG Files not more see by Lightroom

I've LR5.71 installed on windows 8.0 and is working fine , catalog is ok and I can see both raw and jpg files in folders , if I re-synch it LR reports 0 files missing
Now I'm reinstalling LR ON the same PC BUT in another boot OS windows 8.1 which sees the same disks
I then opened the catalog and found all my pictures , apparently.
I Made a re-sync to a folder and LR WARNED me that X files were missing, all the "missing" files are JPG and obviously they are still there
    anyone knows what's happening ?
    thanks

Why all this re-synching? Seems totally unnecessary.
If Lightroom thinks the files are missing, then it means it can't locate the files on your hard disks.
I am thinking the cause is that the drives that contain the photos are identified with different letters in your two different OS. Is that the case? Can you make the drives to be the same letters for each?

  • [SOLVED] GIMP doesn't open .jpg files

Hello, I installed GIMP with pacman on my arch x64 and noticed it can neither open .jpg files nor save images as .jpg. First thing that came to my mind is that some codec or plugin is missing but I can't find anything. And as my image viewer is able to open .jpg files I think, it's a gimp specific problem. Hope you can help me.

  • Unable to open JPG file, getting "unknown or invalid JPEG marker was found", help needed

    Info:
    MS Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1
    Adobe Photoshop 64bit CS5 etxended (Version 12.0 x64)
So downloaded some JPG files from the web and trying to use some of them as wallpapers. I am able to open them in Windows viewer and some other prgrams but they are the wrong size for my screen so I wanted to change the resolution and opened them into CS5 and sound that some of them would not open. I am getting the following error "Could not complete your request because an unknown or invalid JPEG marker was found" and yet there does not seem to be anything I can do to resolve this to open them into CS5.
    Any thoughts or advice?

Open them into another viewer, copy, then FIle-New in Photoshop and Paste.
Photoshop is picky and a file that does not properly follow the JPEG standards could cause this kind of problem.  Other apps are sometimes more forgiving.

  • Print module - exporting to a .jpg file - borderless printing

I'm attempting to export a picture as an 8 x 10 .jpg file in the Print Module - I want the image to be borderless. I have gone ahead and changed my page setup to reflect the same dimensions, I've removed margins and I've also gone into the Layout section and adjusted my cell size dimensions and removed margins...I can't seem to get two borders to disappear - if it's a portrait image, the sides have white borders and if it's landscape, the top and bottom have white borders.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. If more information is required, let me know. Thanks!

If your image is not in exact 8x10 (4x5) aspect ratio, you'll need to select the "Zoom to fit" box.

  • Is there a cure for persistent file corruptions across the suite?

i am having terrible and consistent problems with file corruptions across the suite. for example…
1: i collected for output (indesign) – corrupted over 100 small images that were linked.
2: opened an indesign job and all linked files failed to update and could not be imported (simply would not import those files and were all corrupted).
3: had a hang in photoshop followed by a 150:30 error (would not open any of my applications). this prompted a clean install of system and adobe cs4 see below
4: most recently, had a hang in photoshop (photoshop will also no "force quit") whilst indesign was open. two of my image files corrupted and, most surprisingly, all my illustrator files that i had placed also corrupted (will not even open in illustrator any more). illustrator was not even running at the time, so, get this – a hang in photoshop destroys illustrator files simply because they are placed in indesign.
this last event has made me more certain than ever that there is a fundamental problem at the cs4 core.
    can anyone help?
    please note the following:
i am running a macintosh imac, 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (latest imac), with 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 ram.
before this last disaster, i had reloaded the system software (archive and install), and updated it all the way to version 10.5.8
i then uninstalled the creative suite, ran the cleanscript from adobe, reloaded the creative suite, downloaded all the cs4 updates
(so, latest mac, latest system, latest cs4 – all clean installs).
is there something i can do? or is this just a very unstable and disappointing upgrade – i have had nothing but problems from day one!
many thanks if anyone has any advice.

    Re: 150:30 error:
Please try this KB article's solutions, and report back on how it went for you. If you can provide details about any recent OS updates, backups, or migrations, that would help is nail down the root cause of the new rash of this error for Mac users recently:

  • Problems with exporting .jpg file in Indesign CS3

Hello! I've used Indesign to create a memory book I would like to now place in another program to have printed (blurb is the company I'm using). Now that I have created the spreads I need to export each page individually as .jpg files, so that I can place them in to this other program to have them printed. (The program does not read .pdf files...they have to be .jpg). I exported each page and noticed that about 20 out of 90 have pages that have black bars over some of the pictures. I'm not sure how to remedy this problem and have tried changing some settings but unsuccessfully so. I've also had problems with Indesign crashing when I've tried to export the entire book as a .pdf. Thanks for the help!

I think I've seen that reported before, but don't remember if an answer was found.
HOWEVER, InDesign's jpeg export leave a lot to be desired under any circumstances, and the best method is to export a good PDF (Use one of the presets intended for printed output) then open that in Photoshop using appropriate settings (if you have body copy sized type, I'd recommend using 600 ppi to keep it realtively crisp, but the printer will probably complain about the size of the file) then save as a high quality jpeg in whichever color profile is recommended by the printer.
I know you said you had some trouble exporting the whole book as PDF, but maybe we can solve that if you give some more details.

  • Error displaying a jpg file loaded into a table with blob field

This may not be the correct forum for this question, but if it isn't could someone direct me to the correct one.
I have created a table with a blob field in which I have loaded a jpg image. This appeared to work correctly, but when I try to display the image in internet explorer it comes back and tells me that it doesn't recognize the file type. Enclosed is the table create, load, and display pl/sql code. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong. Thanks. For the mime/header I used owa_util.mime_header('images/jpg') because my image is a jpg file.
    The database is 10g

When I enter owa_util.mime_header('image/jpg') it displays the file, but in the format

  • Can No Longer Drag JPG files From Finder Directly Into .fla Stage?

For the past six months I have been following a manual process to convert JPG files (exported from InDesign) into SWF files for display advertising assets.
Using pre-built FLA files as templates (configured with clicktags):
Open FLA templates (3 separate files for 3 IAB ad sizes)
Drag JPG from Finder directly into stage of FLA file, aligned to
Publish to output folder for renaming
Today, for no apparent reason, I can no longer drag anything into the stage of any FLA file.  Not just the pre-built templates.  Nothing will drag & drop into an FLA stage.
    What I have tried:
    Restarted Mac
    Reset Flash preferences
What I know I can still do:
Drag files from Finder into the Library, and drag into FLA stage from there
    "File > Import to Stage..."
This works but because of my naming convention it prompts to import them all each time because Flash sees the sequence
This is not another step I am willing to contend with for my manual workflow
Me and my creative team need to process hundreds of assets like this each week, so I'm very anxious to discover why functionality that was working, suddenly stopped.
    Running:
    MacBookPro Retina OS X 10.8.5
    Flash CS6 v. 12.0.2.529

just want to add my annoyance to the pile here. I can't see any logic behind removing the drag and drop function, especially when adding a new folder is now a multi-step process that is far from obvious. to start a new playlist with local folder content you now need to:enter settingsclick into advanced settings (basically all settings now seem to be "advanced"?)manually find and add the foldergo through the adventure of finding the files in your library.
-- because they may or may not be listed under "local files" - you won't know because Ctrl+F is also removed. so you have to remember/know what the album you added is called and search for that. if you have a mixed bag of file names from various albums, you're basically shafted; there's no way to find them all with a single search.then you can add them to playlisteta: but wait! there's more! if you have more than 15 files? you're **bleep** out of luck, because the search will only display the first 15 hits among your local files, and then show you spotify library tracks.I can't help but feel as though spotify is doing everything they can to stop us using spotify to listen to local files, as bugs that make it more or less impossible persist through multiple versions - and now features that seem to me to be basic functionality are being removed?mega minus points from someone who's been using spotify since 2008.
