More Library Confusion

Hello:
I've just purchased Aperture 3 and moved over my iPhoto libraries (2), which I first merged using iPhoto Library Manager.
In Aperture import, I selected that merged library, then 'Store Files in the Aperture Library' and 'Do Not Import Duplicates'.
After backing up everything, I intended to delete the two libraries that I merged, thinking that they're now duplicated in the Aperture library. But when I look in my 'Pictures' folder (253GB), the Aperture library only shows 11GB.
The merged library shows 118GB, and the individual libraries I merged show 87GB and 36GB.
So now with 253GB they must be duplicated somewhere. I thought they would appear in the Aperture library, but that's not the case.
What am I not seeing here?
Thanks for any help. Aperture is fantastic.

Yes I have tried installing 7.1.1.5 and still have the same problem. I tried calling support and initial response was "it is Windows XP SP2 problem". After I asked for a supervisor I got another tech on the line who spent 1 1/2 hours with me on the phone formatting ipod, deinstalling and reinstalling all Apple apps as well as renaming drives. Nothing helped. He said he would file an issue with Apple engineering team. I hope they will come up with something. It is very unfortunate that I already has killed so much of my time trying to troubleshoot this issue.

  • Iphoto Library confusion- removing duplicates - photo appears too small now

I have a massive mess in my Iphoto library so please excuse the confusion of this question but I can't simplify it any more
    1) I had many duplicate photos so I recently started deleting duplicates manually through the Iphoto window.
    2) I also have two photo libraries. I made a new library awhile back on the advice of this forum as I had Question Marks instead of pictures. I never removed the old library and now not sure what to do with it. Should I trash it?
    3) After deleting duplicates and rebuilding thumbnail cache as it prompted me, now when I look at some of the photos they appear very small in the Iphoto viewer window and others appear fully. When I try to make them bigger in the Iphoto window they become fuzzy..
    4) However, when I look at the actual files in the library in the Finder, I see I still have these photos in quadruplicate plus I have backups on other drives..
5)When I look at each copy of the same exact photo all of them appear in Preview as the same size as they do in the Iphoto library window. All except one - this one appears full screen...and very clear. The one that appears clear is actually visible in the finder menu where as the others all just have the jpeg icon...
    6) How do I get my photos to appear as there full size in the iphoto library...Thank you....

  • Multiple Library Confusion

I am a the sole user on my computer. I have 50 items in my User Library and 51 items in my Boot Drive Library (many folders have duplicate names). I don't know which Library is the appropriate destination for the utilities, support files, Plug-ins etc. for all the software I use. I also wonder if the install wizards I have used over time may have misdirected misc items to the "wrong" Library. I realized this was a potential problem when I recently installed the Flash Plugin & found that it was installed on the Boot Drive Library, not the User Library. I'm not really sure whether my software apps in general are associated with User or the Boot Drive. My guess is there is not a single answer to all this, but I'm not sure when to start. Any guidance appreciated.

You're talking about two very different things.
Backups are not normally used to transfer data between computers. They're "insurance" against hardware failures, software problems, or user errors that damage or destroy your OS, apps, data, etc. In some cases you can use your backups to set up a new computer like an old one (but not Mac to PC or vice-versa).
For backups, your best bet is to do full-system backups, including all your system libraries and applications. You don't have to, but it's much faster, easier, and more reliable than reinstalling the OS, all 3rd-party apps (individually), copying data, re-entering configuration and preferences.
On a Mac, simply copying the libraries via drag and drop won't make a proper backup (and there are other, hidden system folders on your Mac). If you drag and drop everything on your Mac to an external drive, then replace your internal HD and copy it all back, the result will not start and run your Mac. You need Time Machine; or the Restore tab of Disk Utility; or 3rd-party "cloning" software such as [CarbonCopyCloner|http://www.bombich.com> or [SuperDuper|http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html].
    |
Copying data between computers, especially with different operating systems, is a whole different thing. PCs and Macs normally use very different file systems. Natively, they can only both read and write in the MS-DOS (FAT) format (although ExFAT is supported on OSX effective with 10.6.5). There are some 3rd-party programs that will let a PC read/write to Mac-formatted drives, and vice-versa.
You could use a single drive for a "bootable clone" of your Mac, and copy data from it to a PC, if the PC has the 3rd-party software, but that's a bit dangerous -- it would be fairly easy to do the wrong thing on the PC and damage your backups.
You could use two separate partitions on a single drive, one formatted for a Mac for backups, and the other in a format you can use to transfer data back and forth between the Mac and PC. But that's also a bit dangerous.
Your best bet would be a separate hard drive (or USB stick, etc.) to use for copying selected data files. You could use NTFS if you have an app on your Mac that will read and write it; or you could use HFS+ if you have an app on your PC that will read and write that; or you could use MS-DOS(FAT) with no 3rd-party apps at all (but there is a 4 GB file size limit).
You could also transfer files between Mac and PC over a network.

  • Use My Places in Aperture in more Library

    Hi.
Is it possible to use the same My Places in different Librarys in Aperture 3?
I did try to find where Aperture save this data but don't find. And also no possible to export this.
    Can anybody help?
    Thanks

The places are located inside the Aperture Library Package. There you find a file
          ~/Pictures/ApertureLibraryName.aplibrary/Database/Places/4DnDGA9WQnaUBa%Tx%eu2w .applace
with a cryptic name for each place.
I tried to copy these files from one Library to another, but that does not suffice to make the places available - there must be some additional index file in  the library.

  • More 'Versions' confusion

    I'll be doing a complete nuke&pave soon (don't ask).
How do I save all my docs if they're in Versions?
Do I open every document and 'export' them one at a time? None of my documents are showing in my Documents folder. When I open a document there's no 'Save as' option any more.
Why doesn't Apple just simply put the Versions folder in the Documents folder?

    krbusby wrote:
Anyway, I don't use Time Machine, and I'm nuke & paving because I've decided to not unencrypt my drive, which would take much longer than reinstalling the system which only takes a couple of hours seeing as it was a recent insatll anyway and there isn't much to backup.
I strongly suggest you reconsider Time Machine. You would be up and running in a few hours if you had a Time Machine backup.
Since you are happy with your machine's configuration, a better alternative right now might be a clone. A clone, partition, and restore will be faster than doing that via Time Machine. Clones are inferior to Time Machine for regular backup purposes, but they are ideal for situations like this.
Your last comment "To keep people from messing with it, scrambling their systems, and then having to "nuke & pave" for whatever reason." seems like you assume scrambled my system some how. I assure you I did not. Feels like you're trying to flame a little bit. Try being helpful. If you have nothing to add then maybe you shouldn't.
In this forum, pretty much everyone has scrambled their systems. Otherwise, they won't be here. I always try to keep the pilot light burning in case people are only here to rant and complain. If you want a solution, I will give you one. If you want a fight, you'll get that too. I try to provide both and let you pick which one you want.

  • No more library

I updated to the latest version of iTunes last friday. I have used it on and off since then. Today I opened iTunes and it has a new empty library. It did not ask if I wanted to open a new library as if I had held shift, It did not say that my previous library was corrupted.  My music still in its folder on another drive, but I have no library  for it.
There is only one set of ITunes library files in mydocs/my music/iTunes. The library file is 4kb and the xml is 12. There are severl backups in the previous libraries folder, but the latest one is from March. The temp files that look like backups of the library XML file are ~30meg up until the middle of april, then they skip to a few days ago and those are ~4meg.
I think there was a windows update done recently that restarted my computer. iTunes may have been open at the time. Has an automatic update ever messed up an iTunes library? I tried doing a restore, but it did not restore my library.
I dj so am constantly adding and sorting music, so going back to the beginning of may is just not acceptable. This is days of work I've lost. I have some of the recent changes in Traktor, but it would still take forever to copy all that into iTunes.
    Ths *****, help.

  • More library woes

After scrubbing the forums for an hour, it seems like there are one hundred different variants of my problem but nothing exactly like it. Apologies if this is a repeat.
All of the sudden my iTunes music started showing exclamation points. Usually this is only after I try to play them. The library loads on iTunes launch, and I've tried both option-clicking to select the library location and changing it in prefs.
The advanced prefs shows the correct location for the music files, but for some reason when it actually has to go and play the music it pops up an exclamation point.
I just upgraded to Leopard. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.
iTunes library index files are still on the internal drive.
What's the best way to get back in synch?
    Thanks!

Never mind...I found another poster with the same problem so will move the discussion there. Sorry for the dupe, but this seems like a recurring issue for many folks!!!

  • More library problems!

I recently clicked on the menu in iTunes that asked me if I wanted to download the most recent update for my iPod. Having connected my iPod, this I did and it was successful apart from DELETING the whole of my library.
I have all my media on my iPod, so how do I transfer or import all the files back to my library?
This is not an isolated problem as staff at a nearby Zavvi store report that their iPods were wiped by the update process only last week; so, perhaps there is a glitch in the recent updates that is causing this and all the other similar problems.
    Help, please.

Just wondering, which iPod model is doing this?
Forum regular Zevoneer has some great posts on getting music off your iPod.
Also you can look in the iTunes folder for previous iTunes libraries.
See the Tip in this article:

Do I understand correctly, just the iTunes library is blank, but the actual music files on still on your PC's hard drive?

  • Can itunes make a second library?

    Hi..
I have a music library and I make animations. When I make animations I need to listen to sounds from the sound library, but itunes adds these to my main library. As these come in as various names, these are getting confused with my music library. Is there any way of separating my music collection from my film making sounds?
    Anita

To create or access a second (or more) library, hold down the Option key (or Shift key in Windows) when launching iTunes. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to the other Library.
Note: You can only have one Library open at a time and iTunes will default to the last library opened if you don't use the keyboard command to choose one. The new library will be empty until you add content to it. You need to close iTunes and open it again while holding down the shift key, this time choose to open an existing library and navigate to your original library: Using multiple iTunes libraries -Mac

  • Where is username/library??

I'm so fed up with this. Trying to copy any recent mail and other recent personal data since getting this new iMac, I'm stonewalled once again right at the beginning. I am trying to follow some instructions for copying Mail preferences and it says: "q1uit Mail; open Finder window; navigate to username/library/preferences..." This is such a routine thing yet on this new iMac, in Mt. Lion, no such Library file shows up.
Can anyone tell me where it is and how come it is not simply where it always used to be?
I'm serious. This is nuts. I even restarted, then made sure to double click on the Macintosh HD icon on the desktop to be sure I was in the right place - I am never sure anymore since the sidebar is totally confusing as far as having other networked devices and external drives connected.
    Anyway...where is it?
Or was this an incorrect instruction? Of course I see a Library when I access the HD; but once I then go to Users, no more Library folder.
    Anyone?

Well, after more time on phone with tech support I am told that folder is "hidden."
    It's hidden!!!???
Have to use Main Menu > Go > then hold option key...and low and behold, there's the Library Folder.

  • How to use more than one ipod from one computer

I've got my 30gb ipod set up and working fine from my pc. I've got my wife an ipod nano and want to set her's up totally separately. How can I do this?

When the iPods belong to different people, there are basically three ways of using multiple iPods on a computer and these involve:
    a) Sharing a single iTunes library
    b) Creating Multiple Libraries in a single Mac or Windows user account
    c) Creating multiple Mac or Windows user accounts.
Note: When you are sharing an iTunes library, you don't have to set each iPod to update in the same manner, you can mix and match from the options below as each iPod has it's own update settings
Sharing a Library and/or User Account
If you want to share the one library, you can set either or all of the iPods so that they only get updated with only certain playlists (you can update from more than one if you wish): iPod - Syncing Music
Choosing the update option "Sync Music - Selected playlists" allows you to create a playlist specifically for the iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used some other time if you choose. You can read more about playlists at these links:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
Or you can choose to update any or all of the iPods manually and just drag whatever content you want to them: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
    Multiple Libraries
It's also possible to have multiple libraries in a single account. To create or access a second (or more) library, hold down the Shift key in Windows when launching iTunes. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to the other Library.
Note: You can only have one Library open at a time and iTunes will default to the last library opened if you don't use the keyboard command to choose one. This can prove tricky when using multiple iPods, if you don't use the keyboard command you can risk syncing to the wrong library: Using multiple iTunes libraries -Windows
    Separate User Accounts
Another option is to create a separate User account for each person on your PC or Mac. Different accounts by definition would give you completely separate libraries. Each account has it's own iTunes folder, Library and iTunes Music folder and you load it with CDs etc just as you did with your original one. The iPod can be set to update however the owner chooses, sync all, manual or sync specific playlists
I don't use Windows so I can't give you a step by step on that one, however I can point you to another web page which should help you out. You can read about Windows user accounts here: Create A New User Account In Vista

  • More than one iTunes for one computer.

I have a brother and a sister, and we all have iPods, but only one computer. We have a windows XP so, several different accounts. I already have iTunes set up, but my brother and sister don't. Is it possible to have 3 separate iTunes for each of us? If so, how? And if not, what can I do?
    Windows XP   Windows XP Pro

There are basically two ways of using multiple iPods on a computer and these involve:
    a) Sharing a single iTunes library and or user account.
    b) Creating multiple user accounts and having separate libraries.
Sharing a Library and/or User Account
If you want to share the one library, you can set either or all of the iPods so that they only get updated with only certain playlists (you can update from more than one if you wish):
Loading songs onto iPod automatically - Windows
Choosing the update option "Sync Music - Selected playlists" allows you to create a playlist specifically for the iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used some other time if you choose. How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
Or you can choose to update any or all of the iPods manually and just drag whatever content you want to them: Managing content manually on iPod
Loading the iPod shuffle differs slightly but it can still be used with the others, for details have a look at this page:
Loading songs onto iPod shuffle - Windows
It's also possible to have multiple libraries in a single account. To create or access a second (or more) library, hold down the Option key (or Shift key in Windows) when launching iTunes 7. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to the other Library.
Note: You can only have one Library open at a time and iTunes will default to the last library opened if you don't use the keyboard command to choose one. This can prove tricky when using multiple iPods, if you don't use the keyboard command you can risk syncing to the wrong library:

    Separate User Accounts
Another option is to create a separate User account for each person on your PC or Mac (which it appears you have already done). Different accounts by definition would give you completely separate libraries. Each account utilises the same iTunes program located in the Program Files folder but has it's own iTunes folder, Library and iTunes Music folder and you load it with CDs etc just as you did with your original one. • Library Item Conflict

Hi. I'd appreciate any help people can offer regarding this
problem. I am creating some animations using Flash 8. Some work
just fine. Others give me the following message when I try to add a
new movie clip: One or more library items exists in document. It
gives the choice to replace or not replace the items. Both choice
are bad. If I replace the items, one of the original animations
gets messed up. If I don't replace, the new animation gets messed
up. I'm unclear about which items are overlapping. The problems
don't seem to make sense. For example, if I say "don't replace" my
new animation will suddenly have additional moving parts that were
    not part of the original.
Any ideas for solutions or workarounds?
    Thanks.

This is one area of flash in desperate need of some
anhancement - it's blind work and flash would be
better if it listed the offending symbol names and allowed
you to auto-append a prefix to the names
    of each.
Anyway - you need to rename all symbols in one of the
libraries with a prefix or something - not the
best option but it is the only way - combining FLAs is not
    easy in this situation.
I believe somebody may have made a JSFL extension to correct
this (or maybe they will upon reading
this). I will look around to see if i can find something.

  • My i photo library has disappeared!!!

This morning I realised that my I photo has disappeared. The message said "we can not open i photo because you have no more library"
I tried to find it by the Research in the menu folder but it was not exist.
    So I went to: User/pictures:iphotolibrary:originals folder but it says that I have no application to open the folder;
    Thank you for your help.
    Vahine

    Hello Vahine,
Could you please explain this message "we cannot open iphoto because you have no more library".
This is not a message that is generated by the iphoto program. If the library is missing then iphoto will offer to create a new library or let you search for your current library.
I would consider running a search of your entire hard drive using the File > Find command for any folder with the name "iphoto library".
Once you locate those folders you can then tell iphoto to use them as its library by launching the iphoto program with the option key and then selecting the desired folder.
    Hope that helps.
    Cheer!
