More Logic Express 7.2 questions

I've used Cubase for some years (and Cakewalk before that) so I consider myself pretty au fait with DAWs, but I have a few basic questions about Logic (I would RTFM from cover to cover if it was paper, but online is not an acceptable substitute in a program of this complexity):
If I record a take in an audio track, and I want to record over the top of it without hearing the previously recorded take. Actually, all I want to be able to do is record into the track. Do I have to set punch points? Can I manually drop in? I don't know how to record over an existing take.
Although the documentation mentions that the FW-1082 can set punch points and locate points, there's no way I can do this. In fact, how do I set locate points, in/out points, etc. either with or without the FW?
Is there any audio scrub function when editing a track? And on the subject of editing, are the edits destructive or non-destructive?
How do I return to my previous start position automatically when I'm not in Cycle mode?
I'm willing to forgive Logic a lot of things - the latency on this system is much better than it is with Cubase, but so many obvious (to me, anyway) things are buried, and the Environment is confusing to the point of driving me to drink.
Many thanks if anyone can answer some of these questions.

Yes, I know about the manual... I've just bought the Martin Sitter Training Guide, though, and I find it incredibly useful - much more than the online PDF (I have enough printed-out manuals from other software lying around the place that I don't necessarily want to print out another 500+ pages). But your point is well-made. I actually write pro audio technical manuals for a living, and I know how difficult it is to get the user to read them.
Of course I searched in the on-line manual, by the way - but the problem is that I sometimes don't know what I'm searching for - Logic's terminology is confusing if you come from another DAW ("markers", "locators", "location points", "song positions" - you get what I mean?). Also the manual is not accurate in places (Audio Input objects, anyone?) and the section on punch-in didn't give any answer at all to my question. In any case, I still didn't find what I'm looking for (to quote U2) in the manuals, but in less than an hour's reading of the Sitter book, I found what I wanted. That must mean something...
Whatever, having found out some things from the book, I am basically a lot more confident about knowing the underpinnings of Logic (the manual is very little help in explaining these - and yes, I did read the first sections - they're mainly "how", not "why" or "what") and I feel I can move forward.
Thanks for your help on the location, anyway. Now if I can only debug the FW-1082's EQ command set to make it work properly...

  • Logic 8 Pro Installation/ Logic Express 8 uninstallation question

Is there any reason I need to keep Logic Express 8 installed after I install Logic Pro 8 ? I was hoping to free up some space...
I am installing Logic Pro 8 as I type this. I can hardly wait to use it.
    ; )

The easiest way is just to drag the LE folder from Applications into the trash.
There may be some preferences but it doesn't matter if you leave them. Ditto for files in Application Support. There may also be jam packs, templates and other user data lying around but there is no simple way of locating and deleting the lot.
If you're paranoid, use spotlight to find anything with Logic Express in the filename and trash that. Still won't be complete, however.
    Think about this:
You use MS Word. You create lots of docs, download templates, perhaps clip-art and word-art. You create your own dictionary and add auto-correction tables. You customise the program and store things all over the hard drive. No installation program is going to find all the things that you've dotted around. Ditto for Logic Express. Just trash the app and leave the rest to rot. It's a small number of megabytes (unless you've installed Jam Packs) and that's peanuts compared to your likely storage.
    Don't worry; be happy ;o)

  • More AirPort Express problems and questions - sigh

I finally got my MBP to connect to the Internet yesterday, thanks to lots of help from Tesserex. This evening I tried to connect my partner's MacBook to the network and ended up having to reconfigure the AX because nothing worked again. Now the AX LED is flashing yellow again, and yet I am able to connect to the Internet wirelessly - I am typing this on my MBP. I am indeed confused as I thought the LED should be solid green, indicating good connections all around. Any ideas about this?
I also tried to secure my network with WPA, but this caused everything to screw up again, so here I am with no security and on the Web. Pointers for a newbie would be much appreciated.
I still need to get my partner's notebook to connect to the Web too.
My set up is DSL modem > Ethernet cable to Linksys DSL router > Ethernet cable to Apple Express (AX) port > wireless to MPB (in addition, I have two Ethernet cable connections from the Linksys routher to my two desktop PCs.)
Help would, as always, be much appreciated.

Ok, the Linksys is a non-wireless router, so we don't need to set up any of the wireless-type (WEP or WPA) on it, however, you may want to consider using MAC filtering. With MAC filtering, only the computer's MAC that have been entered into the filter can access the router. That would mean any other network device would not be able to use this router to access the Internet until their MAC address gets added to the filter. MAC filtering isn't hack-proof, but it will make it harder for amatuers to access your network. (Note: This will only be effective for computers that you will have connected directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Linksys, so you don't need to do this for your wireless computers.)
To setup MAC filtering on the Linksys:
    - Open a web browser and point to 192.168.1.1
    - Enter the Administrator username and password at the prompt. (The default username is blank, and the password is "admin.")
    - Click on the "Advanced" tab.
    - Click on the "Filters" tab to select it.
    - Click on "Edit MAC Filter Setting" button.
    - For each MAC you want to access the router, enter it's respective MAC address into the appropriate window in the following format: nn:nn:nn:nn:nn:nn
To setup wireless security on your AirPort Express Base Station (AX):
    AirPort tab (optional)
    - Create a closed network (checked)
    Change Wireless Security
    - Wireless Security: WPA Personal
    - Network Password: <create a password for your wireless network; this will be the same password that you will enter when you connect to the network>
    - Verify Password: <enter the same password you used in the previous step>
Base Station Options - WAN Ethernet Port
    - Enable SNMP Access (unchecked)
    - Enable Remote Configuration (unchecked)
    - Enable Remote Printer Access (unchecked)
    Wireless Options
    - Transmitter Power: 10% (Note: If you are having any trouble connecting to your wireless network, you should increase this value. The idea is to find the ideal power where only computers in the house can access the wireless network and not your neighbors.)
    Access Control tab (optional)
    - + <add the computer(s) that will access this wireless network>

  • Can you install logic express on more than one computer

can you install logic express on more than one computer ?

Be sure to read the End User Licensing Agreement for questions of this nature. You are allowed to install Logic on two computers that you own, for example an iMac and a MacBook Pro. You cannot, however, use the two computers at the same time if they are on the same network. You can use one computer as a Logic Node to shift some of the processing load (which you would likely do with an ethernet cable) but you don't need to have a full installation of Logic on the Node  machine, just the Logic Node installation. The idea of allowing two installations is so that you might take advantage of a portable  computer in the field for on-site recording then later transfer those files to a desktop studio set up for further editing.

José, if you buy and download Logic Pro in App Store now, the best option would be to buy an upgrade to Logic Studio. I don't think Jam Packs are available any more in Apple Store, besides it will be more expensive buying them one by one than upgrading to Studio.

  • External MIDI device, can't get more than one sound, Logic Express 9 & Korg N364

Hi, I just beginning to use Logic. I trying to get Logic Express 9 to work with and use my Korg N364 keyboard/workstation as an external MIDI device. I can only get one sound at a time even though I create multiple tracks and assign different programs (or patches) to them.
Each time I do the following: I add a new external MIDI track, change the Channel to new number, put a check in the Program box ( as well as the Volume & Pan), and choose a instrument or patch from the Program drop down menu. What happens, though, it changes the sound to that instrument alright, but ALL THE PREVIOUS EXTERNAL MIDI TRACKS HAVE THE SAME SOUND NOW. I've followed the tutorials I found on the web and it seems like I'm doing everything correct in Logic. I hooked up the MIDI cables, added a new device and connected virtual cables in the MIDI studio window of my Mac OS, and have added the proper Korg multi instrument in the environment window of Logic and "un-slashed" the 16 channels. I get the sounds from the Korg no problem, it's just that I can only assign one sound and no more to the external MIDI tracks. Is there something in my Korg I need to do? Or am I missing something in Logic?

It's not Logic, it's how you have the Korg setup.
I'm not familiar with that model but it is a workstation so I'm pretty sure you can set it to a "Multi" mode.
Right now you are running it in single patch mode.
In single patch mode only one sound is available on a single MIDI channel, your Korg probably has a Multi or Combi mode, this is where multiple sounds can be played, each sound has to have it's own MIDI channel.
You will need to set this up on the Korg first.

  • Logic Express 7.2 Crossgrade Questions???

    Hello,
I just picked up the Logic Express 7.2 Crossgrade and had some questions:
Being that Apple was so generous not include a single lick of paperwork (installation guide or manuals) and the Installer and Content disc are dated Jan. of 2006 (everything is almost a year old, read me's, manuals etc..) that are on the installer disc! I'm a little confused.
First: My original version of Logic Express is 7.0 and I do not have it installed on my computer (see specs below). So, will the serial # that came with my original 7.0. version work with this 7.2 crossgrade?
Second: Is the 7.2 Installer disc a full installer or will I have to run the original 7.0 disc and then run the 7.2 installer disc to upgrade the Logic Express application? Or is the 7.2 disc a full installer?
Third: Being that there are no physical manuals, etc... and as I stated above the PDF Manuals are almost a year old, where do I find all of the most current Manuals, Read Me's, etc...?
Fourth: is anyone using Logic Express 7.2 with a Digidesign Pro Tools LE system, which consists of a Digi 002 (Console) with Pro Tools LE 7.1cs10. I'm using it with a Power Mac G5 Dual-Core 2.3 with 4.5 GB of Ram, running Tiger 10.4.8 (PPC). If so, are you having any problems using Logic Express 7.2 (or what ever the current version of Logic Express is) and is having Logic Express 7.2 installed on the same computer as Pro Tools causing any problems with Pro Tools running properly (or to be blunt, breakin Pro Tools)?
    P.S.
I know I might get slammed for this and I know that the Logic Express 7.2 Crossgrade was only a lousy $29.00 plus Tax but is it too much to ask for actual physical manuals, installation guides with the crossgrade? And most importantly, at least the most current version of Logic Express 7.2? As I said above, the 7.2 disc is dated almost a year ago! The current version I now see is 7.2.3 and was released September 2006. What's the deal with that?. I guess Apple is trying to save a buck or make one, who knows?
    Any help would be appreciated!

    Thanks for the reply SynterX,
I'm glad to see that someone is on the same wavelength as me. I agree 100 percent that Apple "could have at least supplied a single sheet of paper in there that says how to install and what to do". I happen to be one of the people that like to look at the actual printed documentation (call me crazy). And yes, I did have to send them my 7.0 Disc. Thanks for answering the mysterious full installer/serial # question that I had. Just curious, when did you get your crossgrade and is it the same version that I just received, 7.2 (which is almost a year old).
I also just ordered the Soundtrack Pro upgrade to Final Cut Studio. I can't wait to see what that mess looks like!
    P.S.
Where does one find the current Logic Express Documentation, etc...?
    Thanks again!

  • Question about logic pro 7 & logic express

I have been working in Logic Platinum 4.7 for several years & need to upgrade - I work mainly in MIDI for new Age music and add 1 or 2 live audio tracks - I don't use a lot of effects and never use loops - a salesman at Sweetwater suggested that I might only need logic express rather than Pro 7 - does anyone know if logic express can do all that logic 4.7 did? I particularly need to edit MIDI notes in the score format - and is it true that I dont' need a mixing board any more even though I still want to use my Kurzweil sampler, PC 88 MX and Proteus modules? Also need suggestions about audio and MIDI interfaces to use with an IMac 2.16 intel dual processor computer that I will buy at the same time - thanks for any input - jazznow

I do not know about 4.7 but I do have Logic Express which
I used for about 6 months before upgrading. I would think
that you will be fine if all you are doing is what you described
here. You really dont need a mixer but you might want to
look at a control surface which gives you the feel of a mixer.
I suggest the Behringer BCF2000, Only 200 and it emulates
a Logic Control. As far as interfaces you are going to find
alot of different opinions here so you should check them
all out. It comes down to how much you are willing to spend.

  • Question about Selling Logic Express 9

I gave my macbook pro away as a gift and am now going to sell Logic Express 9.
I realize I won't get much for it, but how do I go about selling this regarding registry transfer?
    thanks for any help!

You can start by checking the EULA (http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/logicexpress.pdf), but basically you just need to make sure that LE9 is deleted from the MacBook Pro and you give all the installation discs, manuals, and serial numbers to the buyer.  This is the proper, legal way to do it.
Registration is optional and doesn't really play any legal role in purchasing or transferring a license.  Having said that, if you have registered LE9 and the buyer tries to register it after purchasing from you, Apple will have questions.  If you think the buyer will want to register LE9 then you will have to call Apple support to confirm the sale & transfer.  Again, registration is optional and not required for a legal sale/transfer of a license (as long as you delete your copy).

  • MicroKORG in Logic Express questions

    Hey there!
I'm thinking of upgrading to Logic Express (from GB'11) within the next few months, and I just had a couple of questions as I also would like to purchase a MicroKORG in the near future as well.
From what I've read the MicroKORG sends audio signal via the 1/4 inch connection- so that'd just be a Real Audio track, right? If I wanted MIDI it'd need a MIDI cable, yeah?
But- what if I love the sounds on the synth, but want to be able to tweak and edit a recording (bum notes, timing issues etc)? Is there not an official plugin instead or...?
Does the MicroKORG COME with a plugin? I've looked everywhere and can't figure it out
    Thanks in advance

Q1- 1 gig of RAM is the minimum amount if you want to be safe. RAM is golden in Logic, but 1 gig is just safe.
Q2-I don't even see EXS24 on my copy, so there can't be a huge difference.
Q3- Yes, they should be but put that question in the logic PRO forum just to be sure.

  • Logic express and pro 7 to logic studio 9 upgrade question

I have logic express 7, logic studio 7, and just upgraded to logicstudio 9, but my serial number is not recognized. All my copies should be registered with apple already, so how should i best remedy this?

Hi again and thanks for the reply.
I tried to follow your instructions but isn't working still. I think I did something wrong. Here is what I did:
    1. Went to Midi Setup, double clicked on IAC driver and then checked the "device is online" box. It says its on Bus 1.
2a. In pro tools, went to peripherals, at the synchronization tab I left MTC reader port: ANY and put MTC Generator Port: IAC Driver, Bus 1
2b. Then went to the Machine Control tab, enabled MIDI Machine Control and set it to IAC Driver, Bus 1.
3a. In Logic Express I went to preferences>Midi>Sync and selected listen to MMC Input and took Midi Clock off. I see where it says MTC but there isn't a place to make it the slave.
I know I'm not doing this right because I hit play on Pro Tools and Logic Express just laughs at me
Can you help me through this. I'm a novice with Macs and Syncing.
    Thanks again friend.

  • Question of process after producing a song on logic express

Hi, so i've recorded a track using the produce preset in logic express. Now I don't know how to get it into the mastering preset for polishing and limiting using plugins. I'm not sure how to get from point a to point b. i've entered the preset and have tried to open my project but it always opens up in the produce preset only. How does one go from to producing to mastering in logic pro and also how do you apply compression and hard limiting to voals in mastering mode.
Thanks for your help in advance, the feed back would be useful.

    Hi,
You will need to bounce an uncompressed stereo track of your Logic project. Then open a new logic project, from the template section choose the mastering preset and then bring in your stereo track. The Mastering suite can only be used on an audio track, not a Logic Project.

  • Logic Express - poof! no more...

i am quietly furious that Lion has rendered my version of Logic Express unusable.
    If Logic Express 9 wasn't £166 i wouldn't be so miffed.
If Apple could ever be accused of being arrogant, i think this is the time. i'm really dissappointed.
It seems i can downgrade, but it's going to take time - time i'd prefer to spend doing something else, like being creative, which is what Macs are supposedly all about.
The people in Cupertino are certainly very inventive.

1st of all, check cables, connecting the interface to your equipment (both speakers/mixer and musical instruments).
2nd, check audio prefs of Mac OS. Alternatively, Audio/MIDI Setup utility. Does your interface work with iTunes? Quicktime? If there is an input for Quicktime, then Logic should also work.
If your interface has a software control console of any kind, check it as well. Inputs might be muted or anything like that.
Since GarageBand is working with Tascam OK, I guess it is most probably Logic settings or faulty/incorrectly connected cables.

  • Logic Express 7 Update/Upgrade Question

    Hello,
I posted this once before but I'll try again...
I have Logic Express version 7.0.1 and never did get the "paid" upgrade to Logic Express version 7.1 (or was it version 7.2?). I'm wondering what the latest version of Logic Express 7 is and how I would go about getting the update/upgrade to 7.1 (or 7.2)?
I use GarageBand most of the time and don't use Logic Express a lot so I don't really want to fork out the cash to move to version 8 but it would be nice to see it updated somehow. Logic Express 7.0.1 seems to work fine on 10.5.6 for me, by the way.
I just can't seem to find any info on Apple's website about the version 7.1 (or 7.2) update/upgrade.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
    Thanks so much,
    Gerard

    It was 7.2.3 (961.9). I still use it along side 8.0.2 (1502.22)…
Because the files in both LE7 & LE8 get huge when they are edited, but unlike in LE7, there is no way to bring the file back to it's proper size. A 350 KB song in LE8 can get to be many MBs, so I'm forced to build the song in LE7 where I can save the final version twice, which brings the file back to it's proper size. I can then open it in LE8 and edit only the few parameters that I've learned don't increase the file's size. The amount of extra work this made transferring 700+ files from Cubase is beyond belief. I needed to get software to preserve LE8 file creation dates for the many files I had to make small changes to in LE7 and import a 'new' file into LE8. And after every 5 times I open LE7, I'm asked to register the application. I had to click that box off the screen over 2500 times.
