More Mac Sound Problems
I have lost sound on my Mac. All of it except for the startup tone. That means iTunes, DVDs, and even alerts. I have tried zapping the PRAM as suggested elsewhere on this forum but I am not sure that is happening. I shut down the computer, wait ten seconds or so, startup, and get to the Option-Command-P-R keys before the gray screen, but I never hear a second tone. The computer just loads as usual. I've tried numerous times and, of course, I still do not have sound. On my old MDD Mac G4, there was a little button on the motherboard that you could push to achieve the same end. I tried locating on the MacPro and "think" I found it in the far top, right hand corner of the machine. Anyway, pressing it causes the computer to restart. I have pressed it and then scrambled to get to the Option-Command-P-R keys before the gray screen but still get the same results - in other words, no results. Any ideas?
Hold the PRAM keys down BEFORE you restart and keep them down until after the second tone. This requires long fingers and strategy, or a second person!

Ok so all of a sudden a problem turned up on my mac. I can hear audio from iTunes but from nothing else... Garageband, Quicktime, Firefox, Safari... nope. I can hear system sounds and anything in iTunes works perfectly. Also apps like Hear from Joesoft have no effect.
Newbie, Thanks for your help!You should try to use the guest account and see if this issue occurs also in the other account. If it does then it is the entire system. If it doesn't then that means its only your current account. If its only your current account then the easiest solution is to transfer all your files to the other account and delete your current account. If its both accounts then try an archive and install. That's to install the OS again. If that doesn't work then a trip to the Apple Store is necessary because that means its mostly a hardware issue. Try those our first. Reply if you need details on any of the steps.
Also, can you back trace as what you did out of the ordinary right before you notice this happening if there's any. -
when i capture footage from my camera to imovie hd the sound is off sync, sometimes by a few seconds sometimes almost a min, i heard it needs time to render after you import or something, but im in a bind, i have a full length movie and a deadline, so im in kind of a situation here... there hasnt been one clip that has imported proporly, it seems ridiculous to have to go back and sync up the sound for each clip for over two hours of footage.
but is there any other info or things im overlooking?

These are the takes that I will use,
If I have to sync the sound to 1200 clips, and I have a week for the deadline, I obviously won’t make it. I’m used to it taking a full day of work to edit but, I’m hoping there is an easier way… I was thinking the sound extract might automatically fix it for me… but there doesn’t seem to be any reason why it would fix them all instantly after pressing a button… but there also seems to be no reason for a program that is usually simple and straightforward to have such a huge malfunction that would be so daunting. I know I can fix this by using the program by hand on each and every clip but I don’t really have the time to do this 1200 times over.
It would be great to hear any other approaches or information I’m not understanding toward solving the problem.

I am running iTunes 8 on my Acer Aspire One. The sound is terrible--vocals are not audible, regardless of what speakers or headphones I use or equalizer settings. This is a big problem with the video of course. I think that the audio drive is Realtek (sorry I have more mac than pc experience). Sound quality is fine through other source, i.e. streaming.
Any help would be great!Ok, something weird just happened to my movies in my collection - the ones that were imported as mp4 have all been corrupted too.
Previously, they all worked fine - sound tracks perfect. Now, they have no vocals at all just background music and some background noises.
The rental I purchased was unaffected.
I am running iTunes 8.2.

Desperately need some help!! iTunes/Quicktime/iChat/Sound problems....
So, yesterday, I was online, on google video, and when I pressed play on the video, there was no sound, but the video worked...the same was true on every video site i checked. My computer volume was at max, and I even tested the speakers to make sure they were on, and they indeed were.
I thought that was odd...but then the problems really started.....
After that, I clicked on my iChat icon. It bounced once, and did not open. The same thing happened when I clicked on iTunes. 1 bounce, and then nothing. I checked to make sure all of my iTunes mp3 files were on my computer....they indeed are all still here, bit nothing I can do opens iTunes. I've run disc utilities, and disc repair...according to that, everything is peachy-keen on my computer.....but iChat and iTunes STILL will not open, and there is still no sound on anything.
Now, i'm leaning towards the archive and install option....or even just backing up what I want to save, wiping the drive, and starting from scratch.....but i'd really like to not have that happen.
(and, as a side question, if all I want to save are images, several documents, and many mp3 files, would everything be okay if I just backed them up on an external drive, and then loaded them back on to my computer after reinstalling OS X?)

I got rid of Flip4Mac to see if that affected my sound problems, but it did not. So, as of now, my problem remains the same... -

I have been having the same sound problem with my Mid 2010 Mac Pro tower ever since I got it. I have been in touch with Apple and have been told that they are familiar with the problem, but that they are still working on a fix. The problem is that I have external speakers, and every time I shut down and then start up again, I have to go to preferences and physically change the sound output to go to the speakers. I have also been tole that the Mac is supposed to sense the external speakers and go directly to them.
Is there anybody else out there with this problem, and has been able to resolve it?
Thank you.I have a 2010 Mac Pro and use the stereo line out jack in the back of my machine for my speakers with no problem. I don't recall any problems setting it up. But check the Audio MIDI Setup (in your utilities folder) to see if you can set it from there (should be able to). Not sure why the preference wouldn't stick. And I don't believe there is automatic detection of an attached sound output device where the sound preference switches to that (unless maybe the front jack which I never use).

I'm having a problem with my Bose USB sound system that has just recently developed. The system is plugged directly into the back of my Mac Pro desktop so it's not going through any hubs or secondary systems. When I first start my computer the sound works just fine. But after about 10 to 15 minutes of use the sound stops completely - as if the sounds have been turned off. If I boot into Windows 7 using Boot Camp, the sound system there works just fine with no problems at all, so I do not believe this issue is hardware related but is something associated with OS X.
This all started recently after installing Tinker Tool and then realizing that their latest version is not compatible with Snow Leopard. I followed their directions and told Tinker Tool to restore the previous settings and then I removed it from my system. Now, I'm having this USB sound problem. I think it's highly probable to be the cause of my problem.
Is there anyway to reinstall the USB drivers in OS X without reinstalling the entire OS? Or, is there something else I can try to restore the USB function to Snow Leopard? Many thanks for any tips or suggestions.They are plug and play.
I did try unplugging all of the USB devices and then powered off the computer and unplugged it for about 5 minutes as I heard that that sometimes solves USB problems. However, upon reconnecting the problem returned. All other USB devices seem to be working normally - it's only the Bose sound system. I tried plugging it into a different USB port in the back of the computer but the problem continued after about 10 minutes. Therefore, I am convinced this is not hardware related.
At this point I am thinking I need to reinstall OS X Snow Leopard to undo whatever Tinker Tool damaged. Is it possible to just replace the USB drivers in OS X without reinstalling everything? -
Pismo Sound Problems after Sleep in Tiger
Hi all. New to the forums and returning to Macs after years of cursing Bill Gates. Picked up a Powerbook Pismo from a friend and have been having some fun with it, but I have one problem I can't solve. I replaced the hard drive (saved the old one) and installed Tiger and 1GB of memory on the machine. All seemed well until I noticed that the sound would not work sometimes after sleeping. The sound will usually return with a reboot, but sometimes I'll have to actually turn the machine off, and clear the PRAM to get the sound to come back. Sometimes, the volume and screen controls will both not work at all (pop up doesn't even appear when the keys are pressed), sometimes it's just that the sound doesn't work, but everything looks right on the screen. I've also had the sound and screen buttons not work only to have pop ups suddenly appear and the adjustments happen several minutes after I pressed the keys. So far I've tried:
Clearing the PRAM
Checked the Pram Battery (ok)
Reinstalled Tiger (Still loses sound)
Downgraded to 10.3 (problem persists, and seems worse)
In system information on Tiger it says "there was an error when retrieving that information" when you click on the sound hardware.
The machine is a 500mhz Pismo with a 48gig drive and 1 gig of Memory (133mhz, would that cause this sort of problem?)
I have not tried going back to OS9 to see if the disappearing sound resolves as I don't currently have an OS9 disk.
This sure seems like a software problem, but I'm starting to wonder. I really like this machine and want to get it to work! Help!Maxstang, welcome to Apple Discussions.
Did you repair permissions after you installed Tiger? Have you updated Tiger to 10.4.11?
Here's the Sound troubleshooting info in the Pismo Service Manual.
No sound from speaker(s)
1. Verify mute mode is not enabled (F6 on the keyboard).
2. Check the volume setting in the Sound control panel.
3. Verify no external speakers or headphones are plugged in.
4. Reset PRAM.
5. Make sure speaker cable is plugged into sound card.
6. Replace sound card.
7. Replace speakers (part of the top case).
8. Replace I/O logic board
Startup sound is heard, then no sound from speaker(s)
1. Remove sound preferences from System Folder, reset PRAM,
then restart.
2. Perform clean installation of system software.
Had the Pismo previously had OS X installed. There's a firmware update (Boot ROM version 4.1.8) that should be installed prior to installing OS X. However, when I got my Pismo with Tiger installed, the firmware was not updated (have since updated). However, I don't think this could be the cause of your problem, since I had no sound problems when the update was not installed.
The PC133 RAM (which runs at 100MHz) should not be the problem. I have PC133 RAM in my Pismo.
Since you replaced the HD, could you have disturbed the connection to the Sound Card. The Sound Card is located to the upper-right of the HD. Here's a helpful laptop site.

Massive sound problems in Yosemite
Hi,
I have been experiencing massive sound problems with Yosemite. It basically effects everything except the sound control in the control centre.
What happens:
I can't control the sound volume anymore. Key board sound control does not respond (sound symbol is struck out), sound bar in menu bar in greyed out.
If sound symbols are not greyed out, the sound will stay on the level it currently is. Neither key board nor menu bar icon can change the volume.
When it happens:
When I plug/un-plug headphones.
When I use iTunes. iTunes will even stop playback... the only chance to get iTunes back to normal is restarting the app.
When I use Skype.
Occasionally on any incident... there is no app in particular linked to this.
What I do to get around it:
Restarting the mac... this will help until I sent my Mac to sleep or do any of the things above.
Accessing sound control via the control centre (which is work around, yet very annoying).
Killing sound via terminal does not do anything.
Btw. there is only one thing listed in the sound input/output menu.
This problem is very annoying and occurs several times daily, especially since I work a lot with sound and music. I know this an weary argument, but considering what I paid for this machine ... bla bla bla... I need a fix.

Yes, I have. It works pretty much like any re-start does. As soon I use headphones or send my Mac to sleep, it goes back to unresponsive sound control.
Edit: Just tried it again and it didn't do anything. Key board sound control is still greyed out...

Have you checked the settings in System Preferences > Sound?
There is a switch inside the audio jack that may be stuck. Try gently inserting an audio plug, gently wiggling it, and then removing the audio plug.

Sound Problems after Flash 11.3 Update
This reply is to the post by Ortho_Fan, number 28, which references a Firefox forum and "Firefox Hates New Update." This thread is specifically about problems that Flash 11.3 is causing with Firefox but the problem isn't with Firefox, it is with Flash Player 11.3.
I have no sound with Firefox, Chrome or Safari. I do have sound with IE9 but some people do not.

For the sound issue you're experiencing, I would recommend that you follow the advice in the threads you've referenced above.
Flash Player 11.3 included new sound enhancments to facilitate support for low-latency audio, to facilitate more repsonsive sound in complex Flash games. While we try to test a wide array of hardware, and conduct months of beta testing, it's impossible to hit every device, OS, browser and driver combination.
Please ensure that you have the lastet drivers installed for your sound card/chipset. If the problem persists, please post details of your configuration to that forum thread so that we can track down that hardware/driver combo and investigate the problem.
As a workaround, you may wish to roll back to Flash Player 10.3, until a new version is available. Flash Player 10.3 contains up-to-date security patches (we maintain one major version back for Enterprise), and will revert the sound change that is causing problems for you.

Problem: I was watching a movie a night before, and I muted and forgot to turn off my laptop, today I found out the sound did not work, so I tried restarting and still no hope, i tried disabling and enabling the IDT High Definition Audio CODEC and still no hope, windows says that this device is working properly, but oviously its not I really need help, I dont know anything advanced about technology yet, so im helpless.

Hi,
Try the following.
Download the IDT Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.

When done, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers. Right click the IDT device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow thisand then proceed with the uninstall.
When complete, shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery. Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds. Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter.
Start the notebook and let Windows fully load - it will automatically load an audio driver, but just let this complete. Then open your Downloads folder, right click on the IDT installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation. When this has completed, right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select Playback Devices. Left click 'Speakers and Headphones' once to highlight it and then click the Set Default button - check if you now have audio.

For last more than 8 months I am having this problem. First problem started with skype call. My laptop lost its speaker and showed a red X mark next to sound icon. I couldn't find any thing to fix the problem, so I did system recovery to factory setting. After that my computer downloaded windows update and security updates for vista. It upgraded my vista service pack 1 to service pack 2. In middle of this downloading stage several times I lost sound and then again got back it and again lost. I couldn't find any good solution. It is so frustrating that I can't view any videos in internet explorer which is upgraded to 9 now . I tried to watch videos in FIREFOX or Google Chrome. But no sound after few minutes watching. Every time I lost sound I tried to fix with microsft system restore or sound hardware restallation or total system recovery to factory setting. Nothing solve my problem permanantly. I contact with Microsfot vista forum, but no solutions actually fix my audio problem. At this moment my sound icon has red X mark .
This morning when I started my laptop it was ok with sound, I watched one news on Yahoo. But after that the same sound problem. In the mean time my computer downloaded vista updates automatically and installed it. When computer restarted my sound icon got red X mark. I don't understand why with some windows updates take my sound off. If I don't want to install those updates, still the sound went off when I watch videos on yahoo or Youtube. It says Yahoo is not responding, sometimes it says internet explorer is not responding. I followed all kind of solution that I got from microsft vista forum but nothing worked out. I don't know how I can fix this problem.

View Solution.Quick and easy fix is to buy a cheap USB sound card (it resembles a flash drive). Just do a google search and you should find one for $2 to $3.
I had the same problem where my sound disappeared and would intermittently work when I rebooted until finally it quit and rebooting wouldn't help. It seemed to have happened after a windows update AND after having errors with the QuickTouch On Screen Display. Upon research, I discovered many people had the exact same problem with this model.
I used Restore Manager to restore the drivers for the QTOSD and for the sound card and although I stopped getting errors for the QTOSD, it did not fix the sound. My quick and easy resolution to my sound problem was to purchase a USB sound card online for $2.49 at Overstock dot com. I also bought one from a local computer store, MicroCenter, that I liked better (because it had a long cord) for $10. My sound works perfect now; HOWEVER, I just realized tonight that I NO LONGER HAVE A DIAL UP MODEM EITHER. You should check to see if yours is still visible in Device Manager or in your dial up connections if you have one. I suspect the problems I had also killed my modem beyond detection because it's also a Conexant HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP (the sound card driver is also Conexant HD). The Restore Manager won't reinstall the drivers because it doesn't see the device. It's too expensive to repair the motherboard and I don't have to have the dial up modem so for now I will just enjoy sound and my laptop for as long as it continues to live.
Again, just buy a cheap USB sound card (it looks similar to a flash drive) for a quick and easy fix. I hope this helps. Good luck. I hope you don't have other issues resulting from this as I did.. -
My ipod touch don´t have much sound on music tracks (i already go to settings-music-sound limit unlock), i really need more power sound for using ipod to teach fitness classes what can i do!?
I imagine that... a limit of sound because ears problems understand that...but in my case i need power i´m not buying a better surround for the gym (the owner must do, but everyone use cd´s and i not see me record cd´s again) ...its the only problem for this iPod to be perfect.... My IMac is from late 2010. But right after I instaled lion i've been having a weird sound problems. so programs that I open when my mac frist starts up the sound works fine but any program i open up later i can't hear any sound from it!!!
Go into your sound preferences and take a look at the output tab and make sure the internal speakers are selected.
