More no. of column Vs. 1 CLOB Column

Hi,
I had an requirement like, I have to store 28 attributes. [id, time, flag....etc]
Initially I have created 28 columns in the table and storing the data.
Meanwhile, I got fired and thinking that to implement 1 CLOB Column to store all the data and can retrieve as required.
Here, I am looking for guidance to execute the above requirement in DB.
Shall I keep the table with 28 column? or
Shall I create one column with CLOB Datatype to store all the data which exist in 28 column? or
Any other suggestion to achieve this requirement?
Kindly guide me on this.
Thanks,
Orahar.

Please, please, please store the separate data elements in separate columns.
There is no possible good to storing 28 columns of data in a single CLOB. You could not index the separate columns. You could not query the separate columns without having code that you wrote parse the data in the column. You would have to deal with all manner of bugs related to delimiters and escape sequences (oh dear-- someone entered a comma in some field which caused my parsing code to think that column6 began in the middle of column5). And the poor guy that had to maintain this system after you're fired would not be able to use any of the "normal" approaches to analyzing the data structures.

In the Source section of the report definition choose 'Use Generic Column Names (parse query at runtime only)' and then specify a suitable value for 'Maximum number of generic report columns:'

  • How to create combobox to display more than one columns

I need kind help with the following question. As the combobox includes two pieces--textbox and the combobox list. Then how to create a combo box bean, which is based on table EMP(empno number(6), ename varchar2(40)) records for example, to achieve these features:
    1) allow more than one columns to be displayed in its records list--e.g., I need to show these records:
    empno (value) ename (label)
    103 David M Baker
    104 David M Baker
    105 Kelly J Volpe
    106 Krista F Carpenter
    107 Michelle P Silverman
The two 'David M Baker's are different employees, but unfortunately, with the same name.
    2) allow combo box list to return the column value 'empno' even though it shows both columns as above. i.e., if user picks the second record above, then the combobox list returns 104 to the textbox in the background, but the 'David M Baker' is displayed on the textbox. Of course the combobox list may return 'David M Baker' if needed when there is only one column in the list as the current standard feature.
3)allow partial match search by typing in some letters. i.e., if user types in the textbox of the combobox letter 'K' or 'k' then the partially matched records
    105 Kelly J Volpe
    106 Krista F Carpenter
should be automatically displayed in the combobox list, not the whole list as above; then user may double click to choose one of the two or if user continues to type in 'R' or 'r', then the uniquely matched record 'Krista F Carpenter' is displayed in the textbox and the 106 is returned to the textbox.
    4) as a bonus if it's doable, allow combobox to return values to different textboxes when its records list has more than one columns.
The reason I need these features is that I am working on the project migrated from Microsoft Access applications to centralized Java version web application. We at beginning promised to users community that Java swing will provide all the GUI user friendly features Microsoft Access has, but now we got stucked--we ate our words and got tons of complains from our users community. This is just the most needed component I posted here. I really hope that Java would add all the default GUI user-friendly features to compete with MS since its Win95 GUI has been accepted as industry standard. And most users are used to it. They claimed that they don't know and don't care what tool you use the newly created application should be more user friendly, not the opposite.
I would be very much appreciated if any one would help me with this item.

Thanks for your comments. I think nobody expects Sun to write everything including special features for its components. But I do think Sun should provide at least those standard user-friendly features for the GUI components because most users have been used to the GUI user-friendly features provided by Win95 and Access/Excel applications. Then this will help us to productively create applications to beat MS applications.
Other wise like me, to get the existing GUI features, existed in old MS Access application, for our migrated Java application, I must re-create the GUI components library first which is a big burden to me at least, for others it might be fun for coding on their own from scratch, but I have to focus on the timing of project.
If you really can pass the request to Sun and push them move a bit, please pass these words: before Sun starts to revise them, please play around window GUI, e.g., Access/Excel applications, then plan what to do, the bottom line is to equally match or better than them in FUNCTIONALITY(Look and feel is not my focus here). Don't ignore the influence of Windows regardless of you hate it or love it, the reality is most users are so familiar with windows GUI features which are accepted as industry standard. Thus the choice is to match or better to beat them. Don't make your car by closing your door, don't assume users will like what you come out in a closed room.

  • One Key FIgure in more than one column with different restrictions

    Hi,
I am using a key figure in more than one column with different restrictions, but restriction in one column is affecting the result in other column. What shall i do to make it independent from one another??

    Hi Pravender Chauhan,
If you want in Single column different value for different Rows based on same Key Figure, you can create Structure where you can define different logic for each row but using same key figure.
If you want to use different Key figures then you should have to Restricted Key Figure and for any calculation you can use calculated Key figure.
    Assign points if Useful.

  • Is there a way to open CSV files with more than 255 columns?

I have a CSV file with more than 255 columns of data.  It's a fairly standard export of social media data that shows volume of posts by day for the past year, from which I can analyze the data and publish customized charts. Very easy in Excel but I'm hitting the Numbers limit of 255 columns per table. Is there a way to work around the limitation? Perhaps splitting the CSV in two? The data shows up in the CSV file when I open via TextEdit, so it's there. Just can't access it in Numbers. And it's not very usable/useful for me in TextEdit.
    Regards,
    Tim

You might be better off with Excel. Even if you could find a way to easily split the CSV file into two tables, it would be two tables when you want only one.  You said you want to make charts from this data.  While a series on a chart can be constructed from data in two different tables, to do so takes a few extra steps for each series on the chart.
For a test to see if you want to proceed, make two small tables with data spanning the tables and make a chart from that data.  Make the chart the normal way using the data in the first table then repeat the following steps for each series
Select the series in the chart
    Go to Format sidebar
    Click in the "Value" box
Add a comma then select the data for this series from the second chart
    Press Return
If there is an easier way to do this, maybe someone else will chime in with that info.

  • How do I get to have more than 20 columns in a table in adobe form?

I see that there is limitaion to not have more than 20 columns in my table in adobe form, Is there any way I can have more than 20 columns in a table in adobe form in landscape mode.

    Hi,
That only relates to the Table Wizard. Once the table is placed on the page, you can add columns manually, from the menu or right-clicking on a column.
You can also use fields within a repeating subform (instead of the table object).
    Good luck,
    Niall

  • How to create a table with more tan 20 columns

I created a A4 landscape document to make a calendar for the next year.
To add the date information I need to insert a table with 32 columns (name of month + 31 days). It should be possible to create a table with a over all width of 29.7 cm (consisting of 1 column of 4.9 cm and 31 columns with 0.8 cm)?
Remark: Yet reduced all indention's (? German: Einzug) and other spacers and the size of used font of the table.

    Hello Till,
unfortunatly Pages connot create a table with more than 20 columns. This is no question of size or place.
But you can create two tables, set the most right border of the fist table to "no line" and align the second table (with the other 12 columns) at the right side of the first table. Now you have "one" table with 32 columns.
I have done this with my driving book (Fahrtenbuch, um es korrekt zu schreiben and it works fine.

  • Table with more than 35 columns

    Hello All.
How can one work with a table with more than 35 columns
    on JDev 9.0.3.3?
My other question is related to this.
Setting Entities's Beans properties from a Session Bean
bought up the error, but when setting from inside the EJB,
    the bug stays clear.
    Is this right?
    Thank you

    Thank you all for reply.
    Here's my problem:
I have an AS400/DB2 Database, a huge and an old one.
There is many COBOL Programs used to communicate with this DB.
My project is to transfer the database with the same structure and the same contents to a Linux/ORACLE System.
I will not remake the COBOL Programs. I will use the existing one on the Linux System.
So the tables of the new DB should be the same as the old one.
That’s why I can not make a relational DB. I have to make an exact migration.
Unfortunately I have some tables with more than 5000 COLUMNS.
    Now my question is:
    can I modify the parameters of the ORACE DB to make it accept Tables and Views with more than 1000 columns, If not, is it possible to make a PL/SQL Function that simulate a table, this function will insert/update/select data from many other small tables (<1000 columns). I want to say a method that make the ORACLE DB acting like if it has a table with a huge number of columns;
I know it's crazy but any idea please.

  • ORA-24335 - cannot support more than 1000 columns - How to solve this?

    Hi,
I got error message 'ORA-24335 - cannot support more than 1000 columns ' when i try to insert x no of rows for a table with following code:
    INSERT ALL
    INTO tableA Values ('A', 'B', 'C', 1, 2, 3)
    INTO tableA Values ('D', 'E', 'F', 4, 5, 6)
    INTO tableA Values ('G', 'H', 'I', 7, 8, 9)
    SELECT *
    FROM DUAL
    How to solve above?
What does it really mean? It's not as easy as if my table has 10 columns than I can't insert more than 100 rows (1000 columns divided with 10 columns = maximun 100 rows to insert), or?
Is there a better/more appropriate way to do insert many rows?
Should I do my inserts with an OracleTransaction (My application is developed with C# and asp.net), as ~follows
    BEGIN
    INSERT INTO tableA Values ('A', 'B', 'C', 1, 2, 3)
    INSERT INTO tableA Values ('D', 'E', 'F', 4, 5, 6)
    INSERT INTO tableA Values ('G', 'H', 'I', 7, 8, 9)
    COMMIT
    END
    Thx in advance!

    Hi,
So how did you solve the problem? Can you please give an example?
I have the same problem inserting over 1000 values into my Oracle DB. The table only has 51 columns but to speed up the insert command, I use bulk inserts via insert all command. I need to insert 100 rows at a time for a total of 5100 values.
    Example:
SQLCmd = INSERT ALL INTO MYTABLE (VAL_ID,VAL_NAME,VAL_NUM,VAL_TIME,VAL_CMM,VAL_TIME1,VAL_TRIP,VAL_REMAINING,VAL_AGE,VAL_COUNT,VAL_RSTS,VAL_VOLT,VAL_RF,VAL_DC,VAL_HOPS,VAL_STATUS,VAL_ELAPSED,MODIFY_TIME) VALUES (?,?,?,TO_DATE(?,?),?,TO_DATE(?,?),?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,SYSTIMESTAMP)
    INTO MYTABLE (VAL_ID,VAL_NAME,VAL_NUM,VAL_TIME,VAL_CMM,VAL_TIME1,VAL_TRIP,VAL_REMAINING,VAL_AGE,VAL_COUNT,VAL_RSTS,VAL_VOLT,VAL_RF,VAL_DC,VAL_HOPS,VAL_STATUS,VAL_ELAPSED,MODIFY_TIME) VALUES (?,?,?,TO_DATE(?,?),?,TO_DATE(?,?),?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,SYSTIMESTAMP)
    INTO MYTABLE (VAL_ID,VAL_NAME,VAL_NUM,VAL_TIME,VAL_CMM,VAL_TIME1,VAL_TRIP,VAL_REMAINING,VAL_AGE,VAL_COUNT,VAL_RSTS,VAL_VOLT,VAL_RF,VAL_DC,VAL_HOPS,VAL_STATUS,VAL_ELAPSED,MODIFY_TIME) VALUES (?,?,?,TO_DATE(?,?),?,TO_DATE(?,?),?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,SYSTIMESTAMP)
    INTO MYTABLE (VAL_ID,VAL_NAME,VAL_NUM,VAL_TIME,VAL_CMM,VAL_TIME1,VAL_TRIP,VAL_REMAINING,VAL_AGE,VAL_COUNT,VAL_RSTS,VAL_VOLT,VAL_RF,VAL_DC,VAL_HOPS,VAL_STATUS,VAL_ELAPSED,MODIFY_TIME) VALUES (?,?,?,TO_DATE(?,?),?,TO_DATE(?,?),?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,SYSTIMESTAMP)
    SELECT 1 FROM DUAL

    Then I call: &DBInsert($sqlCmd, @sqlVals);
This is the error I get: ORA-24335: cannot support more than 1000 columns.
I need to insert about 879,500 rows (51 cols per row). The values I read from a text file in sets of about 48,000 and put them into a hash. I tried inserting one row at a time, but it takes too long, about 28 hrs! Then, I tried the bulk update with only 6 rows and the total time was about 25 minutes. Which is acceptable to us.
    Thanks!

  • Group by on more than 2 columns in SharePoint List

    Hi,
Is there any way to use Group-by on more than 2 columns? I know there is a way using SPD which I have implemented as well, however it makes the page READ-ONLY.
Any other way? May be using custom code?

  • Report with more than 30 columns

    XML Pub Gurus,
I have a requirement where I need to create a table layout with proper spacing for more than 30 columns and I asked this question in Open World XML Pub team and they responded to my question as "The page size in word has to be increased to allow to add those many columns". I was satisfied with the answer without knowing that Word will not allow more than 22" long in landscape. So, I am puzzled with the answer in Open World.
So, could somebody please give me guide lines to create this type of report for more than 30 Columns. This is very common requirement for us to report some of the stuff from the db.
    Thanks in advance
    Ram G

What do you want your final destination format to be? I'm thinking you'll probably want to go out to HTML or Excel. I would think that would be the only place where you could read and use a report with more than 30 columns.
Here's an idea if you want to go to excel and if you are using the 10.1.3.2 Enterprise (standalone) version.
    1. Create your query with as many columns as you want.
    2. Don't create a layout at all
    3. Launch Excel Analyzer.
    4. From within Excel, build your report based off the downloaded data (for example add a pivot table).
    5. Upload your excel Analyzer template back to the server
This template can now be scheduled and delivered like normal templates or updated with current data directly from within Excel.

  • ALV to select more than one column by row using set_table_for_first_display

    Hello everyone,
I am developing an application (ALV OO) to select more than 1 column by row ( one ). This is an a holiday application so the idea is:
-One column will be the day, and the row will be the user.
So I am trying to select more than one day by user (that would be the row).
I am using the method set_table_for_first_display but when it shows the alv, doesn't let me to select more than one column with a click of the mouse.
Does anybody know if I can do this (select more than one column, by row) in somehow?
Please let me know if you need more clarification about this.
    Thanks in advance
    Diego

    Hi Diego,
    it's all in the documentation.
set different selection modes through the value of the field u201CSEL_MODEu201D in the layout structure.
    SPACE
    same as 'B'
    see 'B'
    Default setting
    'A'
    Column and row selection
    Multiple columns
    Multiple rows
The user selects the rows through pushbuttons at the left border of the grid control.
    'B'
    Simple selection, list box
    Multiple columns
    Multiple rows
    'C'
    Multiple selection, list box
    Multiple columns
    Multiple rows
    'D'
    Cell selection
    Multiple columns
    Multiple rows
    Any cells
The user selects the rows through pushbuttons at the left border of the grid control
Beyond setting this option, you can set u201CNO_ROWMARKu201D option to hide the mark column which is normally visible when the selection mode allows multiple row selection.
One point to notice here is that if you set your ALV Grid as to be editable, it may override your selection mode regardless of your layout settings.

Attachement table has a strucutre SOLISTI1 which can contain only 255 characters BUT you can use the CL_ABAP_CHAR_UTILITIES=>CR_LF for the new line  and CL_ABAP_CHAR_UTILITIES=>HORIZONTAL_TAB for the column separater.
You need to concatenate this Separters in the attachment table.

I understand the basics of GROUP BY clause. I have a question on why we have on more than 1 columns in GROUP BY clause.
In the below example, the course name by itself does not make up a group. A Course name plus its BeginDate make up a group. This is the whole point of having more than 1 columns in the GROUP by clause. Right?

Thanks Dmorgan. I am just learning the basics of GROUP BY clause. I have noticed that all Non-aggregate columns in SELECT list have to be present in the GROUP BY clause. I thought it was a "syntactical requirement". Now, i realise that these columns are present in the GROUP BY clause because only a combination of columns make up a group.Well, it is a bit of both actually. It is a syntactic requirement that all non-aggregated columns in the select list must appear in the group by clause. However, the non-aggregated columns in the select list is what defines your group. Your two examples define two different groups, and would answer two different questions.

  • More than 1000 columns

In which database i can create more than 1000 columns in a table

    Hi.
I can´t imagine a problem in the real life where you need such number of columns.
I can´t imagine how you will administer such object.
I think that you don´t know the database normalization concept.
There are a lot of documentation out there about this concept, search in the web "database normalization" and take a minute for reading.

  • More than one column retrieved in "report and form" page

    HELLO!
let's see if anybody can help me with this... i'm sure it's a stupid problem but i really don't know how to solve it.
when i create a new application with APEX, i want to add a "report and form" page. i select the table where de data is, and then click on add page. then i go to the page definition for the form that just has been created but there's no option for selecting more than one column as the link column...
i mean, i want to show a report with all the columns from the table and then, by selecting one of them, the form should display that column but the problem is that the primary key of the table is formed by 6 columns and i always receive the "more than one column retrieved" message as it's trying to retrieve the information using only one column. is there any way to make the link column be composed by 6 or 7 columns??

APEX can handle 2 primary key for one table (if you are using the automated fetch row and the automated process row).
In your case, you'll have to create your own "fetch process (page rendering)" and "DML process (page processing)".
