More of a general question but

i just ordered a macbook pro tonight so i figured with the lack of a general discussion area, i might as well post this here.
i kinda have a big problem with the order i placed. i didn't save the order number(browser crapped out on me). and i've yet to receive a confirmation email. i DID get to complete the order before the browser quit because i remember SEEING the order number, i just didn't write it down because i figured it would be in an email. an email i haven't gotten yet.
so i'm worried something is wrong with the order. this especially ***** because tax free weekend ends in a few hours and i'm wondering if i need to place the order again or not. i can't call customer service on a sunday night and i have nowhere to go on here for quick answers.
i apologize for the misplaced thread but i really need a hand here...

Hi davey2k10 - welcome to the discussion forums. If you bought on line, it seems you can just log back in to verify your order???

Hope this solves your problem.

  • A bit of a general question but...

This may have nothing to do with my motherboard, but I'm trying to rule out hardware/software causes.  I play Guild Wars and just before I switched my 17" Dell Trinitron for a refurbished 19" NEC FES991-B (ranked very high for CRTs) my screen went blank and the system rebooted.  The only thing I had changed was to substitute two sticks of 1GB of Corsair XMS for the 2 sticks of 512mb I previously had.  I set the timings at the specs of 2-3-3-6 1T and upped the voltage from 2.65 volts to 2.75 volts.  Less than 2.75 volts resulted in no post.
Now I'm periodically having one of the following problems:
    (1)  Screen freezes with the colors looking strange and only shutting off the PSU allows a reboot.  I e-mailed ATI, who manufactured the card, to ask if it could be the culprit.  I did put an Antec blower fan under the card and turned it on high.
    (2)  The screen goes blank and the speakers emit a repeated popping until I shut off the power and reboot.  No clue.
    (3)  The system reboots.  In this instance, there's usually an error logged in the Event Viewer.  I haven't submitted a code yet to Microsoft because they give you two questions and then charge you--not surprising, it is Microsoft.  My assumption here is that I shut down one two many processes in the Task Manager.  You have to shut off Norton dues to its greed for memory.
I did MemTest 86 twice for several hours at a time and there are no errors on the RAM.
I updated to Catalyst 6.6, including the NET framework file.  My bios is the most current version and I updated the driver from my sound card.  The motherboard temps per Core Center never get about 37 degrees for the CPU and 42 for the system during gaming.  The CPU fan is cranked to maximum.  The temps are higher though, since I put 2GB of RAM in the system and tightened the timings.
FYI for noise Northbridge fans, MSI will send you a new one free of charge if the board is still under warranty and maybe even if it's not.
Could my motherboard possibly be the culprit here?

Sisu, You could try to relax the timing on the ram to see if it helps. Also in your sig you state....."BIOS:  Phoenix - AwardBIOS v. 6.00PG" ,FYI that is not your bios version - when you first boot @ the first screen it will say towards the top of screen 7125.xxx - 7125 is the model of mobo [Neo4 series] and the xxx is the revision of bios - 1.0 up to current 1.D revision.

  • This is more of a computer question, but help is welcome!

Okay. So I downloaded the program to get movies from a personal collection on an iPod, but my computer isn't reckonizing that there is a disc in the drive. I put the DVD in the drive, and it says to insert a disc into the drive. Can anyone help me?

Here's one from Best Buy for about $80
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7962038&type=product&productCatego ryId=cat01042&id=1153336527713

  • Every time I try to get on the ipod, it says I have to add more security questions, but none are listed, just two buttons that say submit.

Every time I try to get on the Ipod games, it says I have to add more security questions, but no questions are listed, just two buttons that say "Submit" and places to put the answers to the unstated questions.  It also asks for a second email address.  It then proceeds to lock up.  Is this a scam of some sort.  There is nothing on the apple website about having additional security questions other than the one, or having a second email to operate the ipod.

You need to contact Apple to get the questions reset. Click here, phone them, and ask for the Account Security team, or fill out and submit this form.
Whichever method you use, you probably won't get a response until the 26th. If you absolutely must make a purchase before then, create a new Apple ID; you won't be able to transfer previous purchases or iTunes Store credit to it.

  • HT5312 I want to change my security questions, but the option" forgot your answers? send reset security info email to" doesen show even if I answer mor than 3 questions, it's bloked for 8 hours

I want to change my security questions, but the option" forgot your answers? send reset security info email to" doesen't show, and after I answer 3 wrong questions, it's bloked for 8 hours, how can I change the answer to this questions If the link doesen show on the aplle wb page?

The 'send reset info' only shows if you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) set up on your account. If it's not showing then that implies that you haven't got one on your account, and you won't be able to add one until you can answer 2 of your security questions - in which case  see if the instructions on this user tip helps you get the questions reset : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4551

  • General Question re logical workflow (Multiple Products/Sales Teams)

Currently we are upgrading from a highly customized CRM environment developed in CRM 4.0.  We are hoping to move to an out of the box solution with 2015.
But I have a general question. We are a service company with different sales groups for each of our products.
Currently we have customization for each service so a Sales person is assigned to a specific product for the customer.
So my question is, how is this handled out of the box.  I am sure there are many many many companies in the same situation.
So say 10 products with sales group for each product.
Then a customer with multiple departments.  Each sales group needs to contact the specific department.
So a customer could potentially have 10 different sales people contacting different people in the customers organization.
How do you know when someone has already made contact?
If we just look at the activities it is not very clear that contact has been made for a specific product.
Even with our customizations, there have been many situations where 2 sales people contact the same person at a clients office and we end up looking very unorganized.
Any thoughts or comments are appreciated.
If this is not the right place to post this type if discussion, please redirect me.
    Thanks

As an example, for 37-minute sequence of footage (made up of multiple clips) it's taking 50 minutes to first export a non-self-contained, time-code-reader-filter-added Quicktime.
Did you render fully before you exported? That helps. But this is also a GOP format, and it takes longer to do pretty much everything, as it is a processor intensive format.
    1) How much more memory would help this work flow go faster, and approx. how much faster??
None. RAM doesn't come into play here. PROCESSOR speed is all that matters. What will make it go faster is enabling QMaster to have Compressor access all cores of the processor. Or getting hardware to help with the compression, like the Compress HD from Matrox. But that only boosts encoding to H.264.
    2) Has anyone else done this type of work-flow, and been able to do it more quickly? Is RAM the issue? Any suggestions for a more efficient work-flow?
RAM isn't the issue. Faster Processors, hardware boosting...converting the footage to ProRes before you begin editing...all help.
RAM isn't what is hindering you here.

  • I have a handful of general questions about Firefox OS as a consumer..

I couldn't find a better place to post this, so I'm trying on here.
I'm in the market for a tablet (high-end), and I'm holding off on getting an Android-powered one because of Firefox OS. However, I have some general questions and concerns regarding performance, software and hardware. Here they are.
    1. Is the Firefox OS interface as responsive as a native experience on say an iPad or an Android tablet? (Is there any lag on swipes between screens, button presses, etc?) If not, will it be in the future?
    2. Will I miss the Android marketplace or the Apple app store, being restricted to only HTML5 apps? Do you think this will become an irrelevant question as the HTML5 app ecosystem grows?
    3. Do you think the quality of HTML5 apps will be inferior to those from existing app stores because they are free?
    4. Will the Firefox browser be the only one available in Firefox OS? (i.e. will there be the option to use Chrome, Opera or any other browser if the user so wishes?)
    5. Will Firefox OS include useful utility apps, such as an alarm clock, a calendar, a weather app, etc?
    6. I read a lot, both on the web (news, video game reviews), as well as ebooks. Will Firefox OS on a tablet be a pleasant experience conducive to e-reading? (Will it include a good ebook reader app?)
    7. Will there be a high-end Firefox OS tablet that is comparable in specs to the Nexus 10? (i.e. impressive screen resolution, powerful CPU/GPU, lots of inputs/outputs like USB, HDMI, microSD, etc) When do you think such a device might become available?
    8. Would it be possible to flash Firefox OS onto say a Nexus 10 or other tablet or phone if one wanted to use it as their OS instead?
    Thanks!

    1. Depends on the phone but a avererage power android phone would likely cost the same as a high end firefox os phone.
    2. HTML 5 is really the future of the web, I've heard that Firefox will let you package apps to be playable offline, but not sure if thats true.
    3. I '''think''' Firefox OS may have paid apps that will be restricted to users who buy them.
    4. I think Mozilla will be nice enough to let Google and Opera make browsers. Google let Mozilla do that with FF for android.
    5. See the simulator https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/firefox-os-simulator/
    6. too early to say
    7. too early to say, but Foxconn (helps apple) makes some apple products, so yes in the future is see a high end Firefox OS tablet 2-3 years down the road.
    8. not sure
NOTE: Please note that we are only contributors, we dont develop firefox os.
You can ask more on the IRC channel as there are likely devs there.

  • Migrating from procmail to sieve, general question

    Hi,
I want to migrate a Mail-Server from 10.5 (postfix, procmail, cyrus) to 10.6 (postfix, sieve, dovecot) and have a general question about sieve.
The current setup on this server is quite complex with procmail-rules.
But there is only ONE procmailrc which delivers the mails as wanted (about 120 Pages of rules).
It looks like procmail isn´t maintained any more and I want to use sieve.
I read a lot of infos about sieve but can´t find an answer to this question:
"How to setup sieve to use only one sieve-script-file for all incoming AND outgoing messages?".
The above mentioned procmailrc handles incoming AND outgoing mails (e. g. Mail TO AND FROM customer X is also delivered to all users being in the group X (these groups are maintained in a FileMaker-solution and the procmailrc is created via a Script in FileMaker)).
With procmail I only had to set up the /etc/procmailrc to include "my" procmailrc. I didn´t need to setup procmailrc-files for every user (about 80 user with a quite high fluctuation, so this is not an option).
Where is the config-file I need to add an "include "my" sieve-script" with all rules (as I did with procmail)?
Does Sieve also handle outgoing Mails?
    Many thanks in advance
    Sven

  • Validation General Questions

I have a couple of general questions on validation.
    1) I have a text field defined as a "Required" field (it is using the form_required template). Must I also create a NOT NULL validation on this field as well? It seems that I should not have to do this. However, if I do not create this NOT NULL validation, then clicking on a Submit button while this field is empty is not generating any error message. But when I include a NOT NULL validation, then I do get an error message.
    2) This question is related to the first. I tried creating a regular expression validation on my field in which I use the pattern
    [[:alnum:]]{1,}[|$#&_?]+
The field should allow the user to type-in a string consisting of 1 or more alphanumeric characters (it could be a foreign language characters as well)
and 1 or more special characters like $ or #.
I thought this would also generate an error message if the user clicks the Submit button while leaving the field empty. But, again, I get no error message. Why?
Thank you in advance for any insight on this.

    Thanks very much, Justin.
When I saw the regexp_like() function in your reply, I am wondering if, perhaps, you might also have some insight into how I can ckeck if a field contains non-English type characters (i.e., mult-byte characters). I already posted a question about this an hour ago but have not gotton any replies as yet. In my post I asked about using the regular expression pattern [[:alnum:]] since the docs state that this will check for mult-byte characters. And so, I thought if perhaps there is some function I might use to return a boolean TRUE if a field contains non-English characters versus a FALSE if it contains only English characters.
Any insight in this would be most appreciated.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Asking general questions about 'computing' matters.

    Hello
I'm new to the Mac world - I posted my first question on the forums today!
I have reviewed the discussions site - everything seems very specific to apple products. Where, if anywhere, could I post a general question - like this one:-
I have a notion that when one connects to a server directly (Usenet newsgroups for example) one makes a deliberate 'hole' in one's firewall, be it software or simply because one is using a NAT router. Sending messages to and receiving posts from Usenet is far quicker than using email, so I'm fairly confident that this is so.
I am well aware that any URL one visits can instantly determine much information about the connecting machine. (see http://www.browserreport.com/ as an example).
Anti-malware programs can only detect known viruses and spyware - I see no reason at all why, once one has granted a direct connection facility, between a group on a private server to
one's own machine, malware could not relatively simply be injected onto one's computer.
If the malware was currently unknown, how would one ever know?
Thanks in anticipation of a helpful response

    Excellent!

Unfortunately, not in this forum. This forum is specifically about the discussion forum itself. It is kind of like a meta-forum. Hopefully, the moderators will just move your post somewhere more appropriate. (As indeed they just did!)
I have a notion that when one connects to a server directly (Usenet newsgroups for example) one makes a deliberate 'hole' in one's firewall, be it software or simply because one is using a NAT router.
Kind of and kind of not. Firewalls are greatly misunderstood. But essentially, yes, any internet connection you establish has some risk involved. However, the risk of making an outgoing connection is infinitesimally smaller than setting up a server to let hackers bang on 24x7.
Sending messages to and receiving posts from Usenet is far quicker than using email, so I'm fairly confident that this is so.
    Really? I don't think so.
I am well aware that any URL one visits can instantly determine much information about the connecting machine. (see http://www.browserreport.com/ as an example).
Not really. It depends on what you are doing. You always give away your IP address, unless you are behind a proxy. In that case, you give away the proxy's IP address. But the proxy still knows who you really are.
If the protocol in question supports such information, then it can be determined. A web browser does send some information about you, but you can easily change it and masquerade as some other browser. With other protocols, it isn't so easy to tell what kind of OS or software is being used.
Anti-malware programs can only detect known viruses and spyware - I see no reason at all why, once one has granted a direct connection facility, between a group on a private server to
one's own machine, malware could not relatively simply be injected onto one's computer.
If the malware was currently unknown, how would one ever know?
    You wouldn't
Don't grant anyone direct connection to your machine.

  • Sorry - very general question

I have been playing with flash for a while on a Mac but I
have been dissatisfied. It is a pre-intel version and 1) it is very
slow, 2) it does not support Soundforge, which I hear is quite
popular and easy to use. Anyway, I'd like to get a PC but I'm not
sure whether I need a standard computer or a suped up version with
lots of memory, graphics capability, etc. Basically the sites I've
seen have divided computers into those suitable for standard office
tasks and net surfing and those suited for "hard core gaming." I am
basically planning to use the computer just for flash animation and
sound clips. Is a standard PC (that exceeds Flash's minimum
requirements) going to do it for me? Sorry for the general
    question. Thanks.

First of all, no need for the apology, there are no stupid
    (or general) questions.
Second of all: sorry to all Mac fans, but PCs are the way to
go. After all, you get to choose what company makes your computer.
So you can get either the high-end model from HP or Gateway, or get
something a little more affordable from eMachines or Compaq. With
the Mac, you can only choose, well, a Mac.
While computer shopping, look for the following features:
(This is the BARE minimum of what your expectations should
    be)
    Windows XP Home Edition
    AMD Athlon+ 2.1 GHz Processor
    800x600x16-bit or better screen
32 MB Video RAM (For the occasional game here and there)
    512+ MB System RAM
    Sound Card, Speakers
If you get a computer with Windows Vista (which you probably
will), turn off the Vista visual styles, use Windows Standard.
(Flash has a BIG problem concerning Windows Vista visual styles,
which is the problem I'm having now...see first page of "Flash
General Discussions" for my post, please help! Thank you.)

  • General question: mail

Hi, this might sound like a noobish question, but here I go anyway:
I have setup my email account in my itouch and can view my emails (haven't tried sending out though). Now I'm wondering which process does the itouch do:
    1. The itouch just connect to mail server so that we can view our emails or
    2. The itouch downloads our emails from the server, and save them (kind of creating a replica) in itouch. Thus, we can view our emails.
I'd like to know the answer because if no 2. is true, then wouldn't that mean it will then eat up some space for our email replica?
    Thanks

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    1. Emails are generally downloaded but emails that are more than a few tens of kb may not be right away until you select the option at the bottom of the email.
    2. You should also check in Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > {account name} > Advanced and see if your +iPod touch+ is set to delete mail from the server or not.
Assuming you don't have the iPod set to delete mail from the server, if you use a POP3 mail service then deleting an email on the +iPod touch+ will not impact you ability to read, reply or delete the same email on your computer or web-mail. If you have an IMAP mail service then reading on the +iPod touch+ will mark it as read on your computer/web-mail. On IMAP deleting an email will also be reflected elsewhere.
When you connect to iTunes you'll see a small amount of space as "other" which will include your emails. Most emails can be read when you don't have a WiFi connection.
Many ISP email accounts won't allow you to send email if you aren't connecting to the Internet using that ISP.
    regards
    mrtotes

  • General question regarding "parallelism" of iPhone execution

I've got a general question and hope somebody can shed some light on this.
While I'm relatively new to iPhone development I've been in software programing for more than 15 years now and have a solid background in Java, C, C++, C# and other languages. I've created a couple of applications for the iPhone, easy and complex ones, some using UIKit, others using Open GL and Open AL. With that said I think it would be fair to say that I know pretty much what I'm talking about.
For those who tend to refer everybody back to the Apple Samples or PDF guides, please believe me, I've read them all.
    Here's my "question":
I occasionally ran into a situation where I got the impression that code on the iPhone got executed in a "non sequential" or "parallel" manner even when I did not explicitly created threads. I'm not referring to code buried in a framework or so, I'm talking about code I've written. (English is not my mother tongue, so please excuse me if my explanation might be somewhat difficult to understand.)
I try to give an example. Assume a code snippet like this:
    _gameEngine = [GameEngine alloc];
    [_gameEngine initSomeStuff];
In my understanding the second statement (the initSomeStuff) gets executed once alloc returns and _gameEngine for sure is a valid pointer. Is that fair to say? I sometimes got the impression that the iPhone starts executing code without waiting that a method returned.
I had similar issues when I tried to show an ActivityIndicator while another method was doing a lengthy operation. Pseudocode like this:
    [_activityIndicator show];
    [self longLastingOperation];
    [_activityIndicator hide];
In code like the one above: Can I be 100% sure, that the hide message is not sent until longLastingOperation returns? I ran into a situation where I had the impression that show and hide got called immediately without waiting until longLastingOperation returned.
    Final example:
    [self performSelectorOnMainThread:@selector(doSomething) withObject:nil waitUntilDone:YES];
    [self nextStatement];
    -(void)doSomething {
    [self longLastingOperation];
1.) In the above code, I understand the idea is that doSomething will be executed on the MainThread and that nextStatement will in no way be executed before doSomething has returned. Is that true?
2.) doSomething is supposed to run on the MainThread but does this hold true for longLastingOperation, too? Or could it be that longLastingOperation WITHIN doSomething gets dispatched to another thread and doSomething returns PRIOR to longLastingOperation been finished?
This might all sound pretty wired but as I said from time to time I ran into a situation where I got totally confused as to how stuff executes in – or out of – sequence. I helped myself with using NSNotificationCenters etc. but I'd like to understand what's going on in detail and crystal clear here.
Your help is more than appreciated.
    Thanks,
    R.

It is never safe to assume that any allocation was successful, and while it's incredibly unlikely that you're running into any such situation, it's entirely possible for a formal protocol to declare that a given message send should return immediately without waiting around:
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Cocoa/Conceptual/ObjectiveC/Articles/ch apter13_section_8.html#//appleref/doc/uid/TP30001163-CH9-BAJIGHAF
An "impression" doesn't prove much unfortunately, so I'd recommend getting friendly with the debugger to see what's really going on.
