More on syncing libraries

I have two laptops, each with an iTunes library. I use both laptops, one for travel, one as a home computer. Unfortunately Apple doesn't allow syncing to multiple libraries. But is there a workaround, so I don't have to back up everything, and erase and replace everything every time I switch computers? I was hoping cloud would solve this but doesn't look like it has yet. So annoying.

If the iTunes libraries are different on each computer, merge or combine the two on one of the computers followed by transferring the combined iTunes library to the other computer per the instructions included with this link.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1751?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Or place your combined iTunes library on an external drive connecting the external drive to whichever computer you are using at the time.

    Hey lindsay146,
Home Sharing lets you to stream or transfer music, movies, and more with up to five authorized computers in your household. You can learn more about it in this link:

  • Merging and Syncing Libraries

So with this new version, it said that you can merge and sync two or more libraries by simply dragging one Aperture library into another. Is this done from the desktop or from within the application itself?
Thanks in advance for your help!

You open your main library in Aperture, and then either drag your second library into the Aperture window, onto the projects icon. Then press the "Merge" button to merge the second library into the first.
Or use the File menu : File > Import > Library   and select the second library in the File Chooser.
Merging will update matching content; adding will import the complete second library.

  • Syncing libraries only

Hi, I've read lots of other threads on this issue but cant get a thorough answer on this:
I recently moved all of my music files and my wife's music files onto a 1TB external drive, attached to the back of my time capsule. Using an automator script, we can each mount the drive from wherever. So, we have deleted music from our individual macbooks. I was able to create one large library.xml file out of our new music folder (I reatined metadata from my music).
My understanding was that if I moved the library to the external drive, we could have corruption issues if we both try to access and change the library at the same time. So, I have retained two separate LOCAL library folders....one on each laptop. In theory, these should be identical though.
Keeping the actual music files together is easy. Either of us can drag/drop music into itunes, and as long as the drive is mounted, itunes will suck it onto the external. But keeping the libraries in sync is the issue.
    My questions:
    (1) Assuming we continue to place the actual music files into the correct external drive, is keeping the local itunes libraries in sync as simple as using syncing software to sync between our two laptops the itunes library.xml, itunes library, itunes library extras.itdb files?
(2)Would it just be easier to keep the library on the external as well? If so, how can we both access the library at the same time?

If you are saying that you have 80 Gb of music in one library and 10 Gb of movies in another and they both take a minute to load as sharing libraries then no this isn't normal.
It sounds about right for your music since your database file will be large, but 10 Gb of movies may only be a handful of movies and hence a very small database and should load much quicker.
The time your library takes to load should depend roughly on the number of items it has and not on the total size.

  • Can I organize my bookmarks without Pc syncing? Can I organize my bookmarks on mobile WITH Pc syncing? Can I organize my additional bookmarks added on mobile, after Pc syncing, without going back to more PC syncing?

(Perhaps tell us about the 255 character limit in the above question before we type it there please!)
1.It is very irritating and frustrating that the only way you allow users to provide feedback requires the process of installing a beta ... not many people want to do this, therefore we are not as able to provide feedback!
2.Feedback - It would be fantastic to be able to arrange my bookmarks in the order I want, it is very annoying having a random list, I want to bookmark things but avoid bookmarking because I know the list becomes more disorganized as it gets longer. If I were to sync my PC's bookmarks there would be thousands, perhaps organized because they are on my PC, but how will this change if i add more bookmarks via mobile, will I only be able to fit them into an organized list if I sync to PC and HAVE TO DO IT there?

The only way to organize bookmarks is on the desktop machine.

  • Sync Libraries across multiple Macs

I have an iMac which is my primary machine as well as a MacBook Pro. I want to be able to work on my images ubiquitously across both machines. Does anyone know of any sort of utility that would allow me to work on one machine then have a daily sync to the other so that all changes are replicated across both computers?

Aperture has some of this ability built-in. If you make changes in one library, and attempt to import it to a second library, Aperture will just sync the changes. I'd encourage you to read up on the documentation on this area.
I have a little trepidation recommending it for a solution for everyday sync. But it's certainly something I encourage you to check out and investigate it, though if it were me I'd do initial experimentation on some trial libraries.
And I have much trepidation about using something like ChronoSync to do this. They simply don't understand Aperture's library structure, and frankly I think the chances that you'll eventually corrupt the database (say if you forget to close Aperture on one machine and then sync) over time are very, very high.

  • Sync libraries on Mac and PC

Trying to figure out how to sync the libraries on my sisters iMac G5 and her Dell Windows 7. The Mac is running 10.5.8 with iTunes 10 on both. She wants to be able to plug her iPhone 4 to either one without losing the songs. The Mac has her music collection, but the Windows has those few songs that ship with PCs. I can copy the folder from the Mac to the PC, but can I sync them so that as a song is added to one the other syncs up. They bare both on the same wireless netowrk. I had just gotten them to share a printer which went so very smoothly.
I Googled the info, but it hasn't been much help. If I turn on Home Sharing can this prevent the Windows machine from erasing the songs from her iPhone when she plugs it in?

    Troubleshooting Home Sharing - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2972
No way to do it automatically I know of, certainly not with music other than iTunes purchases.  The only "automatic" way I know if is to have them share the same library file on a common drive.
Dragging should work.  It works in neither direction?  Mac iTunes does not support WMA format.

  • More Home Sync woes

I pretty much gave up with Home Sync before we even got Snow Leopard. Automatic syncing is still a complete disaster and so I adjusted the prefs in WorkGroup Manager so that those managed Macs have it available, but only manually. In that way, I can (in theory at least) sync any Mac to its network home which makes it easy to set up that user on another Mac, which will then get the latest files.
This has worked for a MacPro, but a couple of MacBooks still insist on trying to sync automatically. Of course I cannot change it on the client Macs themselves and in WM the settings for all the Macs are the same, Always control but everything is set to manual. As I said, this is fine for the MacPro, but as I type this, the MacBook Pro is busy trying to sync umpteen Gb of data I just don't want. Of course there's no obvious way to simply tell it to stop either.
Undoubtedly the most useless and fundamentally flawed service of OSX Server, but has anyone had this same problem of not being able to get the client to understand that it should NOT be sync'ing? Any solution?

On 20mhz the max my HH3 puts out is in reality about 144 but more often than not 72.
Channels 1, 6 and 11 near me are full of BT WiFi , Sky and other subscribers.
I find the HH3 (mine is also the B) rubbish. I'll be ditching it for a Netgear WNDR router soon enough.
If 1,6 and 11 are congested then I wouldn't even consider 40mhz mode.
If you understand how this works by requiring an additional channel you can see why.

  • Saying iPhone has free memory, but needs more to sync?

My iPhones always been full. When the last update came around (iOS 8.1.2) I had to take off my music so I could update my phone, and then put it back on. But it said I needed alot more memory than I did before so I deleted a load of apps to make room for my music.
Ever since then, when I plug in my phone the bar at the bottom says I have free space (currently it's at 1.68GB) but when I try to sync my phone to add only 10 songs it says it can't add the items I'm trying to add as additional space is required (currently 27mb).
How is it I can have all that free space but not have enough to add 10 songs.
I'm getting tired of having to find music I don't want on my phone any more to make room for the new stuff. And I can't delete any more apps as I use all the ones on there =\
    So can anyone help please?

You generally get that error code on a jailbroken phone ?
If it is Jailbroken then I am afraid you will get no help here.

  • Is there a facility to more easily sync music my four Apple devices and my wife's three Apple devices without the horrid iTunes error messages when there is nothing wrong with our connection?

We’ve been using iTunes Match pretty much since the beginning, but recently my wife has turned it off and refused to re-subscribe. I’m fast getting to the same place. It just seems so unstable, wishing Apple would invest some of their billions into it. I read with dismay how many people find Google Play to be so much better. As I write this I see a “Cannot connect to iTunes store” on my iPhone. Noting wrong with our connection … it’s alive and well.
Bearing in mind that I have two Macs, an iPhone and an iPad and my wife has a Mac, iPhone and iPad what we really want is the following.
I want all our music to go up to one location (iCloud or even better our own server). I want an app or web app that I see on the right hand side a list of artists or albums (or playlists) and columns for each device. I want to be able to tick the “matrix” to specify which devices the artist/album/playlist should be downloaded to. When the device is switched on, it must download (no fuss no bother and no stupid I-can’t-do-anything-about error message). A nice enhancement would be to specify three options for each entity (Download, Stream, Not Available). There must be options to easily bulk select.
So … is there such a thing out there?
In my immediate family plus spouses and kids girlfriends/boyfriends there are 11 Macs, three iPads and 10 iPhones. My brothers are very similar. I have nieces and nephews that use Apple. My parents also use Apple. Collectively, we have a bunch of Apple equipment.
Did I mention I'd like it to be stable?

Unless you have EE 4G service the UK 3G networks are the base of your problem - they are just far to variable in download and streaming speeds.
Add to the fact that use can/will eat into your Data usage !
ITunes Match as a service is pretty experimental at best over 3G and really i think so long as you have a 32GB or larger iOS device sync'ing via iTunes on a PC/Mac remains the best way to transfer music.
Remember even with iTune Match your music is STILL ON your own PC/Mac HDD !
Usng the devices tab in iTunes you can customize each differing identified iOS device and load as you please.
When we have a competitively priced stable and extensive LTE network in the UK then reconsider Match at that point.

  • Ipod touch syncing libraries

My wife gave me an IPod Touch for Christmas, I am 53 years old and still learning. So here is my question, remember I am old and do not have a great deal of knowledge or experince with these; My wife set up the IPod on her computer at work and downloaded music and photos prior to giving it to me. I have gone to the IPod Store on line and purchased a movie and when I attempt to sync it to my IPod I received a message that my device is synced to another library. I am assuming that because the orginal downloads were done from my wife's computer that is why I am getting this message. I do not want to loose what is currently on my device but I do not know how to tell the device that I want to download my purchase from my computer to the device or make my computer the main library without erasing what is currently on the device.

Greetings and welcome to Apple Discussions...
With all due respect to previous posters--who are not incorrect in what they say--give your wife a kiss and say thank you for the great gift. Then, get you music etc content onto YOUR computer, or your shared HOME computer, no one else's.... and especially not someone's computer at work. The day will come when that connection--and your content--is gone, and the hassles of trying to maintain your iPod content on someone else's computer (owned by your wife's business, not your wife, presumably) is difficult, at best.
Regarding what is already on your iPod from your wife's work computer: she would need to somehow copy the specific files from work and get them "home" if you catch my drift. There are also 3rd party applications that will transfer content from your iPod to a different "home" computer.
    Good luck!

  • More Outlook syncing issues

I know that this issue seems to be beaten to death on this forum, but I haven't been able to find another topic that's explaining exactly the problem that I'm seeing. I have tried all of the tips that I could, both directly from Apple's articles and on this forum. I've uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes and the Apple Mobile Device Support, disabled all other Outlook add-ins, deleted all of my recurring events in Outlook, created a new empty Outlook .pst file, and probably a few other hints that I've seen here.
No matter what I do, when I click to the "Info" tab under my iPhone in iTunes, I get the message that says "OutlookSyncClient has encountered a problem and needs to close." I can close the message, but as expected I get the same thing when I try to initiate a sync. I believe that it will actually bring up that message twice - once when it tries to initiate a contacts sync, and again when it tries to do a calendar sync.
I do not have iTunes set to automatically sync. As with many other users, syncing used to work for me, and then it stopped a couple of months ago (I think around the same iTunes update that seems to have broken the others). I'd love it if someone has anything different for me to try; I feel like I'm out of ideas at this point. I don't think that it would make any difference, but I don't have any problems syncing to my Mac at home. This Windows PC is my work machine. Thanks!

Although this doesn't really go towards solving my problems, I did try going back and installing iTunes 7.3.2, which some people have said is the last version where Outlook syncing worked. Unfortunately, that version won't connect to my iPhone with the latest firmware; it gives me a message that I must have at least version 7.4 installed. So, I'm "stuck" with the most up-to-date iTunes.
Any ideas on the problems in the original post?

  • More outlook syncing problems

Everything seemed to be working fine between my iphone and outlook. The diary was syncing with my outlook calendar and recently (may coincide with recent itunes software update but not sure) all of my iphone diary items now have the wrong times. Every first appointment of each day starts at midnight and the others follow from there.
    All is correct in outlook.
I've read various discussions and have
    1.reset the iphone sync history
2.backed up the phone, manually deleted all diary items on the iphone and reset factory settings
    but I can't solve it.
    Any ideas gratefully accepted.
    Thanks
    Jon

    Problam sorted.
Sonehow when I had updated the i-tunes or iphone software, the timezone for the calendar in the mail settings had changed to a different zone.
