More on the ipod skipping phenomenon

I have some rather strange behaviors occuring. I looked to see if this had come up here before, but I couldn't find this exact diagnosis.
Until recently (possibly the very latest upgrade of OS X 10.4.7 or iTunes 6.0.5 [20]) everything was fine. Now I have a problem. When I plug my ipod into my G4 powerbook and play songs from my ipod over Airtunes the songs skip randomly, like a dirty CD skipping. Most songs simply don't play through to the end at all.
BUT there is no problem with the ipod itself. If I play the playlist direct via my earphones, or into my speaker system direct, instead of through iTunes / Airtunes, there is no problem — no skipping, nothing.
So this issue is something to do with the interface now between my computer and the ipod, or something in iTunes or something to do with Airtunes.
I'll be darned if I can work it out! No resetting procedures seem to make any difference, nor does a computer reboot.
Any suggestions???
Again, the ipod is fine. No problems. DiskUtility gives it a clean bill of health. It's only when I try to play songs on it via iTunes and my computer (via the firewire connection) over Airtunes.
Any help much appreciated

I have a similar problem when I try listening directly to the iPod. When I select a song it will then skip randomly to another song before the one I selected starts playing? Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

  • What makes the iPhone cost $ 400 more than the iPod?

An iPod costs $ 199, an iPhone $ 645 (unlocked). Thats more than $ 400 in difference and 200% in ratio.
I know that keeping-carrier-signal mechanism eats a lot of power, there is a need for stronger battery, but a 200% up in price.

You need to create a user account for your wife (or yourself depending on who has the current user account). When syncing, each of you should sign in as a separate user, login to iTunes and then sync. I had this problem when my sister got an iPhone. When we did her initial sync, everything on my iPhone showed up on hers. Apple gave me this solution.

  • Ipod skipping to the BEGINNING of a song

Hey i bought my ipod classic 120gb about 11 months ago and sometimes it skipps to the beginning of the song i'm listening to as if i would press backwards. I usually have my ipod in a case in my pocket so it can't be me accidentally pressing any button!!! I think it doesn't have to do with particular songs, because it's always a different song and in the beginning, at the end or anywhere in the middle of the song. What i realized is, that when the ipod skips back to the beginning of the song i'm often accidentally pulling on the earphone cable. For example if im standing up or moving while sitting (like today), but it also happened while i was standing at a bus stop. Did anybody ever have the same problem or knows how to solve it? I'm grateful for any help!!! (my warranty runs out in a month and i need to know if i should send my ipod in quickly!)

Mmmmmm. Works OK for me. I've tried every variation I can think of. Play from playlist, play from library, shuffle on, shuffle off, single song repeat on/off, playlist repeat on/off.
WAIT !!   Now I've found it  !!  It happens when I have the sidebar hidden and play a playlist from the PLAYLIST pane. Hitting Enter then takes me to the FIRST song in the playlist.
WAIT AGAIN !!! In the time it took to write the above, it changed again and works properly. Well properly is not really true. It works if I stay in the PLAYLIST pane. If I switch to the SONGS, ALBUMS or ARTISTS pane, enter does nothing. BUT, if I switch to the GENRES pane, enter starts the first song there. AND, if I've switched away from the PLAYLIST pane and switch back, enter then starts the first song in the playlist.
WOW !! That was a crazy ride. I think we can safely say that there is something awry.

  • HT1459 My Itunes library has 700 songs.  The Ipod Shuffle is 2 GB.  How many songs will that hold aproximately.

My Itunes library has 700 songs.  The Ipod Shuffle is 2 GB.  How many songs can I get on the Shuffle...aproximately?

To see the exact size of your library, simply look at the status bar at the bottom.  If you don't have a status bar, enable by going to View > Show Status Bar.
If you want to fit more on the iPod, use the capability to "Convert higher bit rate songs..." as shown below.  If you set this to 128, you can fit around 500 4-minute songs in 2GB.

  • Batt went dead, recharge. Now ipod skips over only itunes songs

Hello and thanks for taking the time to read my problem. My laptop has now had multiple hard drive crashes. 4 to be exact. This last time around I have not downloaded itunes again. My ipod had all my previously purchased music on it as well as copied from CD's. Well the ipod sat for a while and the battery went dead. I recharged the battery and the ipod skips over the itunes songs but not those copied from CD's. Can this be fixed?
I don't want to download itunes and reconnect the ipod because the ipod is already on 4 different hard drives(that no longer exist). I would prefer a different media player than itunes. Any compatible with ipod?
    Thanks.

Authorize your iTunes then sync the iPod.

If you have DRM protected songs, no.

  • Ipod showing up as sunk but audio/ apps not on the ipod

I recently got a new computer (dell) and want to use itunes on it so i download everything from my old desktop onto my new laptop. So i sunk my ipod to the library and it worked for a few days. When i bought the new doodle jump app it showed it as on the ipod but was not acctually on the ipod. the steps were backing up, determining apps to sync then finnishing sync and it said there was 4 steps but i think it skipped a step. Now i cant download anyhthing on my itouch and im really angry that this all of a sudden happened. I have tried using different cords and reinstalling itunes but nothing is working. How do i get my ipod to sync?

it is authorized, the ipod goes to sync and it says it did sync on the computer but never downloaded the app onto the ipod from the computer. I can download apps from the itunes store from my ipod but bought the app on the computer before i realized it wasnt working. • Why won't my iPod work on iTunes or my computer?  It shows up (not on iTunes) and the iPod shows connected but it has to be "formatted." And why are half my songs unable to play on it anymore?  It just skips them!

I've read through several discussions and I've seen a lot of similar issues but none that were quite like mine.  Every time I plug my 3rd gen. iPod nano in it shows it connected on the iPod screen and iTunes opens up but the device does not show up in iTunes.  The icon on the iPod shows connected and gives the arrows circling showing syncing even though it still says connected.  But it won’t show up in iTunes.  It shows up on my windows computer but I can’t click it or make it do anything.  It keeps saying “You need to format the disk before you can do anything.”  And when I hit cancel it beeps and says "Location not available.  Dara error (cyclic redundancy check)."  As if I know what that means!!  And I have 800 songs on it but they aren’t all on my computer and some are on my parents’ computer but I can’t get to that one.  It shows it is a “FAT32” which I have no clue what that means but I’ve never noticed that before.
Windows "can't access the disk" and I don't know why.  It gives me that notification if I try to check the drive or disk or device for problems.  And if you click it on Windows it pops up a screen with formatting things (which I don't know anything about).  And then it closes and says that it CANNOT format the device.
The iPod works almost okay when it isn’t plugged in, but I’ve noticed that half my songs won’t play.  You click on it and it plays the next one in the album.  And it isn’t always the first song in an album but random songs.  And songs I listen to a lot.  You can’t go back (you can only go forward and you can’t skip over the ‘missing’ song) or even click to select those songs.  But other songs play normal, just not half of them that are on the iPod but all of a sudden no longer work.  And I don’t know why.  I have another 3rd gen. iPod nano that doesn’t have ANY of these problems.  It hooks up, it doesn’t need formatting, and all its songs play.  I don’t know what is wrong or what to do.  I’ve tried re-downloading iTunes and everything.  I don’t want to have to reset my iPod and lose everything.
I’ve tried locating the device in iTunes and it shows the iPod but it gives this weird symbol and I can’t select it.  It’s like a white box with a box that is outlined in blue with six random icons in the middle.   I’ve seen it before and it always means something is wrong or a file (which is where I have seen it before) is corrupted.  And like I said I have a second iPod nano of the same generation and it does not give this weird symbol.  Plus it connects just fine.  It’s this one iPod.
I don’t understand what is going on.  It worked just fine and then all of a sudden I noticed songs wouldn’t play so I went to plug it into iTunes and nothing has worked.  I’ve searched discussions and none of the tips help.  But I want my songs to play again and I want my iPod back.

  • My iPod seems to not skip songs, like the iPod is jammed.

I try to skip songs on the right side of the iPod, but it's not working. The button seems to be jammed, although the others seem perfectly fine. Anything I can do?

If it seems your iPod is frozen and doesn't respond to your on-screen touch, your answer is here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3281
The last step says to contact Apple if it doesn't fix your issue, but you can always look up your warranty status, set up service and more here: http://selfsolve.apple.com

  • I tried to sync my iPod Classic but if I try to sync more than 700 songs, everything freezes and the iPod gets corrupted, and I have to restore it. Can I fix this?

I recently bought a new Mac laptop. When I tried to erase all the songs on my iPod and sync it to my new library, 700 songs synced before the sync froze. I could still play songs on iTunes but no more songs would sync.
It wouldn't let me stop the sync and safely eject my iPod, so I just unplugged it. I plugged it back in and iTunes said the iPod was corrupted, so I restored it. I tried to sync it again, but the same thing happened, and it still happens every time I try.
Is there a way to fix this?

Are you running any sort of AntiVirus or security software on your system?  If so, try disabling it temporarily and then resyncing your iPod.
Otherwise, try sync content to your iPod in smaller batches to see if that heps.

  • How Can I Update More Than One Ipod on the Same Computer?

I've had my 30G Ipod since April 2006. For Christmas 2006, I bought my sister a 2G Ipod. I cannot figure out how to put songs on her Ipod as we both share the same computer and Itunes Library. I've already asked Ipod Corporate for help via their FAQ section regarding more than one Ipod operating with the same computer, but their advice (which told me to create a playlist small enough for her Ipod and checked as a shared playlist) did not work for me. I'd really appreciate any help with my problem. Owning an Ipod but being unable to listen to it, as I'm sure many people would agree, is quite annoying.

There are basically two ways of using multiple iPods on a computer and these involve:
    a) Sharing a single iTunes library and user account.
    b) Creating multiple user accounts and having separate libraries.
    Sharing a Library
If you want to share the one library, you can set either or all of the iPods so that they only get updated with only certain playlists (you can update from more than one if you wish):
Loading songs onto iPod automatically - Windows
Choosing the update option "Sync Music - Selected playlists" allows you to create a playlist specifically for the iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used some other time if you choose. You can read more about playlists at these links:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
However since you seem to have a problem with that method you can choose to update any or all of the iPods manually and just drag whatever content you want to them: Managing content manually on iPod
    Separate User Accounts
Another option is to create a separate User account for each person on your PC or Mac. Different accounts by definition would give you completely separate libraries. Each account has it's own iTunes folder, Library and iTunes Music folder and you load it with CDs etc just as you did with your original one. The iPod can be set to update however the owner chooses, sync all, manual or sync specific playlists
If you are unfamiliar with setting up Windows user accounts you can read more here: Using Windows XP User Accounts

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.  Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If you have failed to bakup, then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod: File>Transfer Purchases
