More Panther to Snow Leopard Struggles.

I have avoided upgrading from Panther to Tiger for a long time. Never felt the need. I finally bought a New Macbook pro. I can't get my files to transfer to my new laptop. I bought the Powerbook G4 in August 2004. I don't have it in front of me to give any specifics, sorry.
SL won't recognize Panther's files. Not in Target Start with the powerbook acting as a hard drive. I was told by a Mac Expert I need to get Panther to 10.4 and I will be able to transfer.
Tiger is selling for about 200 dollars these days. I refuse to pay that. My uncle sent me his old copy of Tiger to install but I can't get it to load. On the install it gets as far as Verifying the Disk Location but always errors. It gives me no clue as to why. I repaired the disk before doing anything, but not in it's Install start mode.
Can anyone help me get Tiger installed on my Powerbook G4?
Or does anyone have any other ideas for getting my files from my POwerbook G4 running Panther to a new Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard?
I really am only concerned about the music and pictures. These files are so standardized that there shouldn't be any trouble transferring them between the operating systems, right?
Thanks!

Using A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs will move everything you need from your PPC to your Intel Mac. Boot into Firewire Target Disk Mode with your PPC Mac as Target and your Intel as Host. Create two folders on the Desktop (Command + I) of the Intel one for the PPC Mac (Source) and the other for the Intel (Destination). Place them one above the other with the Source above and the Destination below. Navigate to the location of the files you are moving on the Source and find the location on the Destination before dropping and dragging. It works pretty easily. I used this system when I migrated and even things I had not thought about, were moved. I was about to look for a Sticky note on my PPC Mac and thought, let's see if it is on the MBP, and sure enough, there it was.
This should work for you fine. Please post back if you have further questions.

  • How do I totally remove the 'ghost' of mountain lion from my ibook G4? I erased and restored to panther then Snow Leopard but ML still causing problems

    I am not very tech savvy but work from home and have used Macs for about 18 years, so know the basics. Have had iBook G4 for almost 5 years, it came with Panther Discs and later added Snow Leopard. Never had even the slightest issue until about 2 months ago. Kept getting "browser no longer supported" on websites and eventually could no longer edit my own Jimdo website or publish on YUDU, so downloaded Mountain Lion and installed it on my iBook.
    Straight away it was much slower to start up,  wasn't that keen generally, but used it for 6 weeks hoping I would get used to it. At that point my older Mac Mini (also running on Snow Leopard) died and as I wanted to continue using my printer and scanner (neither had drivers to work with Mountain Lion) I went to Time machine and restored my iBook to the day before I installed Mountain Lion.
    iBook was better immediately and started faster again, everything fine for about 3 weeks and then last wednesday my iBook would not come back on. The grey start up window showed the apple and whirly wheel for between 5 to 10 minutes, then just a blank blue screen. I could move the cursor but that was it. Tried to start up again many times, eventually the grey apple was taking up to 15 minutes before the blue screen. Refused to go beyond that blank blue screen when holding down C and starting up from either Panther or Snow Leopard discs or from Disk warrior disc. Disc Warrior and Utilities said nothing was wrong with the hard drive but always showed the HD icon with a yellow exclamation sign over it.
    Because of work pressure, after 48 hours with no improvement, I wound up buying a new iMac, so can work but still would love to have my iBook back, plus use of my Printer and scanner again. Last night finally managed to Panther reinstalled after erasing 4 times and many failed attempts at install. Everything seemingly fine but Snow Leopard first reinstall failed so erased once more. Second time SL installed but gave a warning in red saying something to the effect that as I am installing an older OS over a newer one, there will be issues. This leads me to believe that somehow, despite Time Machines and now 5 separate Hard Drive erasures through utilities, Mountain Lion is STILL on there? How on earth can I get rid of it and return just to Snow leopard. Any help really welcomed as I am at the end of my tether but don't want to give up on my old faithful (until now) iBook
    PS: Sorry if I post in the wrong section

    First, that cannot be an iBook G4 as that machine cannot run Snow Leopard let alone Mountain Lion.  To run Snow Leopard it has to be an Intel processor, not a G4.  What does it show as the Model Identifier in About This Mac, More Info, System Report, Hardware, Model Identifier?
    Second, if you have erased the hard drive there should not be remnants of any prior content.  Even though Disk Warrior is saying nothing is wrong with the hard drive, it sounds as though there are problems.  You may want to consider simply replacing the hard drive so there are no questions about faults.  A good source is OWC, http://www.macsales.com where they also have on-line videos showing how to do the replacement.
    Third, you could also try again to restart using the Snow Leopard DVD/CD and use Disk Utility on that install disk to erase again, and do it a couple times, then try to install.  If it continues to refuse, then it sounds as though there is a fault with the hard drive.

    Since loading Lion, I've experienced much more instability than Snow Leopard. In particular, Mail crashes with regularity, full-screen apps seem to run slower and show the beach ball more often for longer, etc. I love the features, but I'm disappointed with the performance. Any help coming from Apple?  I've been sending them so many reports after crashes, that their file must be full!

    Summoning max. courage, I did what you advised. Here is the result. What does this tell you? My Lion 7.2 (mid 2011 iMac) has several annoying glitches (which I have so far tolerated through gritted teeth) but none that have actually stopped me working.
    BTW, I see several items involving CleanMyMac which I did not know I had. It is generally villified as a trouble-maker. Spotlight can't find an app. or a utility of that name. How can I get rid of what's there please? Just delete?

  • Many more files in Snow Leopard

    I recently cloned my Leopard 10.5.8 drive, and then upgraded the new drive to Snow Leopard, and applied all updates etc., on a first-gen Mac Pro.
    Checking the file count on the Snow Leopard volume, it's just under 1.9 million files, whereas the Leopard volume had/has right around 1 million.
    Any ideas on why so many more files under Snow Leopard? I've checked the file count of various individual folders, even using Onyx to check the hidden folders, and there's only around 600-700K files visible.
    Storage footprint also went up maybe 10-20GB, but not that significant on a 1.5TB drive.
    It doesn't appear to be causing any problems, but is certainly strange, and causes me to wonder if something went wrong in the upgrade, or if I have some subtle long-term issue.
    Any ideas on what could have happened, and what to do to correct the situation? Or should I just ignore?
    Thanks for any thoughts.
    Ken

    No, David--the top-level directory structure looks the same as the old drive. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

  • More problems with Snow Leopard - won't restart

    Ever since I installed Snow Leopard, my Pro Mac has been acting like a Windows PC - problem after problem after problem.
    The latest problem is the "Restart" function. If I want to restart my computer (or even if another program has to restart the computer), the system freezes. Example: I go to the Apple icon, click "Restart" and the computer goes into the blue screen with the whirling gray wheel (as if it's going to actually restart). But that's all that happens. If I leave it alone, it will sit like that for hours. It NEVER restarts. If I shut it down, I can turn the computer back on with no problem, but the "restart" function only serves to lock everything up.
    Anyone have any suggestions on fixing this? Not a workaround or a band-aid... a real fix.

    Usually when I run up against a problem it has a known solution - if I start up the computer and see a flashing system folder I'm going to look at the hard drive. But sometimes the problem is less obvious - like yours. I'd start by unplugging everything but the keyboard, mouse and display and boot into a new user account as I've said before. I'll run hardware and disk diagnostics and if everything checks out I'll move to the new user account for an extended test.
    At this point I've learned that you've installed 10.6 more than once and that you've apparently created a new user account at least once and had that appear to at least temporarily solve your problem. What I don't know is whether you've performed the hardware test yet and if you've run the disk utility application on all three drives. Also, while it seems that you have reinstall the OS you haven't indicated how. This info would be helpful.
    As to your question about a 'bad installation': Snow Leopard by default performs an upgrade which installs the new OS and deletes the old OS. Incompatible applications are supposed to be moved into a folder marked incompatible. For whatever reason every once in a while things go awry and when I've run into this issue I've attempted a reinstall using the upgrade method first. This has worked often enough that I continue to do so and recommend it. When it doesn't work I erase the drive, reinstall the OS and then use the migration assistant and again, this is my typical recommendation. Only once have I run into a situation where the problem persisted and when I did another erase and install and then manually installed the user's software and manually moved her documents etc the problem didn't reappear. I concluded there must have been some incompatible program that the installer didn't catch.

  • Upgrading from Panther to Snow Leopard?

    I recently acquired a new iMac G5, which unfortunately runs on panther. I need to use this computer straight away as my old MacBook isn't available for me to use anymore.
    After looking a bit online, I found that Snow Leopard was the newest version of Mac so I bought it...
    Trouble is, when I insert the disk and click to install...nothing happens. Please help?!
    I really need this computer to work so someone please tell me what I should do.

    First, you're "threadjacking"... just because iSunny2010 posted a similar question does not mean that you should ask your own question on her topic. Circumstances, and thus answers, are almost always different.
    Second, you didn't provide any information to help us help you.
    Third, it's almost a guarantee that any machine that is running Panther will not be capable of running Snow Leopard. Panther was replaced by Tiger before the Intel machines (which SL requires) were introduced.

  • HELP! More Tiger to Snow Leopard

    I still run Tiger on my MacBook Pro, so I purchased the Snow Leopard Boxed Set, just like Apple wants us to. Studied up to know what to expect, cleaned up my computer, popped in install disc, and immediately something's wrong: When I click on the Install Mac OS X button, instead of the set up installation menu, I get one that says I need to restart my computer to begin the install process.
    Not what anything I've read says is supposed to happen, but I go ahead and restart. So ... I continue following instructions until I get to the Choose the Install disk part: I get an icon with my hard drive and an exclamation point, and a note that says I need to use Disk Utility and repartition my disk using "GUID Partition Table", and that I will lose all my data by repartitioning my disk!
    I really, really, really want to avoid a clean install. I just don't have the time for it. Even so, I opened up Disk Utility and can find no mention or explanation of "GUID Partition Table."
    Can someone please enlighten me. PLEASE!
    (After further reading - Apple needed to be more clear about this - I realize my old Core Duo process will limit the ability to take advantage of 64-bit processing and Open GL. But what does that have to do with installation?)

    Adding a bit of background info to baltwo's replies, all Intel Macs come from Apple with their drives formatted with the *GUID Partition Table* (GPT) partition scheme. Moreover, if you repartition the internal drive of an Intel Mac with Disk Utility, it defaults to this scheme. Thus, the only way it could be changed to Apple Partition Map (APM) is if you (or someone else besides Apple) repartitioned it & purposefully selected that scheme with the "Options…" button, or repartitioned it while it was connected to some other Mac as an external drive (including with Target Disk Mode).
    This may help explain why Apple doesn't mention this in the instructions that come with Snow Leopard. It is an unusual situation & should apply mostly to those with the necessary equipment to backup & reformat the internal drive again.
    A bit more info: Intel Macs will startup from disks using the Apple Partition Map scheme -- in fact, the Snow Leopard DVD itself & essentially all other Apple-supplied bootable DVD's use that scheme. In that sense, it is a more universal one because PPC Macs can only boot from APM. However, GPT is more modern & flexible & a much better match to the capabilities of Intel Macs. For instance, the drive must use GPT if it is to support Boot Camp dual booting into either Mac OS X or Windows, or support most non-Apple file systems like Microsoft's NTFS & many others.
    Thus, the only compelling reason to format a drive with APM is if it must be used with both PPC & Intel Macs. This obviously does not normally apply to the internal drives of Intel Macs. Sooner or later, you will probably need to return the MBP's drive to the GPT scheme, so it is a good idea to make time to do so as soon as it is convenient.

  • How To Transfer Files From Panther to Snow Leopard

    I have a new MacBook with Snow Leopard.
    G4 Powerbook with Panther.
    Migration assistant does not recognize Panther.
    Does anyone know the best way to get files (music, pictures, some docs) off of the Panther and into the Snow Leopard?
    THANK YOU!

    you can boot the powerbook in target mode. reboot and hold "t" at the chime. then connect it by a firewire cable to the macbook. the PB should show up as a mounted external drive on the MB. in Migration Assistant select to migrate from a hard drive or TM backup, not from another computer. see if migration assistant recognizes PB then. if it doesn't at least you have it mounted as an external and can copy what you need by hand. also be aware that using Migration Assistant to migrate from PPC to intel may lead to some problems even though it works well for most people

  • Does Moc OSX Lion use more battery than Snow Leopard?

    Ever since I have updated my MBP Early 2011 (2.2 Ghz Radeon 6750) to Lion, my battery life has gone down tremendously. I used to be able to get a solid 7 hours in (light workload ei. web browsing) and now I'm only able to get 3.5 hours MAX. I'm currently running 10.7.2 and the problem is still there. I have gone through around 200 cycles so it's not like 1000's of cycles or anything. Is this just me or are other people exeriencing the same problems? I plan on going back to snow leopard soon if there is no fix to this.

    I have had my MBP since July 2011, and am at 22 cycles.
    You must run soley on battery charge, almost never plugged in.
    Are you running your battery very much down (10%-20%) before re-charge , or recharging at about 40%?
    Running Lithium-Ion batteries almost dead create a "memory" that can make your MBP unchargeable.

  • More ram with snow leopard?

    can a late 2008 MBP 2.53 hold 8 ram if snow leopard comes out?
    right now my top is 4 gigs....it would be nice if this were possible

    The limitation was hardware, not software. Snow Leopard won't change that.

    Apple Insider had published a great article explaining it in detail, but I cannot find it right now.

  • Once I updated to Firefox 11, I can't open pdf's. This is on more than computer, snow leopard and lion and more than one website.

    I've updated to Firefox 11 and now I can't open online pdf's. This has happened on more than 1 computer, using both OS 10.6.8 and OS 7.0 and on more than one website. I tried unchecking "block pop-ups" under preferences but that didn't help.
    When I use Safari to open the same pdf's, they open up fine. Everything worked fine with my Firefox until I did the upgrade.
    I'd prefer to continue to use Firefox, but I can't figure out the root of the problem.
    Has anyone else had this happen as well?

    I found a recommendation in another thread:
    ''If using a Mac, go to the Firefox Plugins and disable the Adobe Acrobat NPAPI Plug-in, Version 10.1.3. This is a recent plugin update, and as soon as it was installed I noticed that PDFs wouldn't download.''

  • OS X Lion spends more battery than Snow Leopard?

    ¿i'm the only one that has this problem?
    Please respond this post if you have this problem

    Hello from Spain.
    Updated a couple of hours ago and am having the same problem. But I can't understand (and I am a computer scientist) how an update can shorten your "battery-life" (not the real life but the timing) from 5-6 hours (mi MBP is new, 2 weeks) to 2 hours and a half.
    On the other side, I think is a software problem, because although my percentage has decreased (of the battery) I am having 2 hours of battery in the label for a long time (so maybe is a little bug?).
    Let's keep in contact (this has to be submitted to Apple in any way). Tomorrow I'll try to call to the Spanish Suport Telephone.
    RE-EDIT: I continue monitoring my battery and now it says 3 hours (69%). The percentage decreasing rate seems to be normal so I think there is only a little software bugs, but what about you guys? Have you monitored your bat. more?.

  • Why does Lion need to be rebooted more than Snow Leopard?

    After upgrading to Lion I have noticed that I need to reboot Lion  more often than Snow Leopard. Is this just me or is this something others have seen?

    I think this is just you. Nevertheless I would install the 10.7.1 update if you have not yet done so. This will improve the stability of Lion somewhat. But before you do that I would reinstall Lion. You may find this will improve things quite a bit especially if you upgraded from Snow Leopard. This will not erase the drive so you won't lose any of your files.
    Reinstalling Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
    When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
    Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Battery discharge: Lion 10.7.2 vs Snow Leopard 10.6.8

    Has anyone noticed that Lion consumes more resources than Snow Leopard thus causing faster battery discharge?
    YMMV, but it would be interesting to see of others can get similar results. Do you suppose Lion 7.3 will increase or decrease resource usage and what affect will it have on battery life?
    I called Apple about the battery discharge issue on my 2 week old MacBook Pro with Lion 7.2. I was only getting about 1/2 of the 7.7 WIFI hours advertised. They gave me the usual "if depends" on WIFI, system settings, applications, etc., i.e. such things as cpu and memory load (paging/swapping=>disk i/o), other disk activity, and a few other things.
    My large expenditure on the new MacBook spurred me to investigate what was going on using the Activity monitor. I configured my old MacBook Pro (mid 2009) and my new MacBook Pro (late 2011) with the same system preferences. I reset both the PRAM and SMC on both machines to maximize the battery charge (documented elsewhere).
    Obviously, a direct hardware comparison would not be meaningful but when you look at the operating systems there is a significant difference between Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8 and Lion OS X 10.7.2. Lion uses much more resources than Snow Leopard.
    My Observations:
    The first value I list is for OS X 10.6.8 and the second for OS X 10.7.2. I tried numerous other combinations but these nicely summarizes my results.
    1) I started with only the Activity monitor, iTunes Helper, and Epson EEventmanager manager running, No WIFI or any other user processes
    CPU % idle               : 98.75 vs 99.4 (i.e. both machines were literally idle)
    No. of threads           : 179   vs 277  --> + 55%
    Kernel threads           : 60    vs 82   --> +37%
    Processes                : 41    vs 54   --> +32%
    Wired Memory MB          : 480   vs 864  --> +80%
    Active Memory MB         : 198   vs 407  --> +106%
    Memory Used  GB          : 0.808 vs 1.32 --> +63%
    Percentage of 4 GB       : 20%   vs 33%  --> +65%
    Virtual Machine size GB  : 96    vs 149  --> +55%
    2) With WIFI and Safari added
    CPU % usage              : 72.9 vs 91.02 (i.e. both machines were not very busy)
    No. of threads           : 253  vs 376 --> +49%
    Kernel threads           : 60   vs 82 --> +37%
    Processes                : 51   vs 63 --> +24%
    Wired Memory MB          : 669  vs 1007 --> +51%
    Active Memory MB         : 600  vs 1190 --> +98%
    Memory Used  GB          : 1.57 vs 2.47 --> +57%
    Percentage of 4 GB       : 39%  vs 62% --> +59%
    Virtual Machine size GB  : 131  vs 191 --> +46%
    Look especially at the percentage of memory used. In either case, I measured no paging nor swapping. But, as you can see, with the increase of memory used with Lion when WIFI and Safari were added you could quickly push the memory as more process are added and start paging and swapping to/from disk hence use more battery charge.
    The increase in number of threads, processes, memory usage, virtual machine size, and WIFI activity would imply that Lion would have to consume more battery charge than Snow Leopard as you use more cpu/memory to chase more threads.
    I looked at WIFI usage and it involves a lot of chatter between the computer and the internet. Over time a lot of packets are sent/received even when no data is being passed and would be a drain on the battery. There would be a greater drain when there is data passed because of the additional CPU and memory needed. But, in todays world, you cannot run without an ethernet or WIFI connection because of the dependency on the information/data on internet cloud.

  • New computer, transferring files, G4  10.4.11 to imac Snow Leopard, 10.6

    Hi,
    I have a new computer and need to transfer files. The old one is an imac Power PC G4 1 Ghz running 10.4.11 to a new imac 3.06Ghz Intel i3 running Snow Leopard, 10.6.
    Which cable do I need, the 400 to 800 FW?
    I understand I get only one shot to run Setup Assistant. Do I load iWork and the new version of Office onto the new computer FIRST or AFTER I run Setup Assistant?
    My printer will no longer work ( Epson RX 580, not supported ) and programs like Quickbooks Pro Version V9.0.6 R7, and Quicken might need upgraded. Should I contact these companies first to see if they are still capable of running on 10.6? If I need new software, should they be loaded on the new computer BEFORE transferring files?
    Can I back up Home Folder, Documents, iTunes, iPhoto etc to my external HD, then disconnect the HD before the transfer? Exactly which files need backed up externally?
    Its been 7 years since I switched to a new computer and am rusty, plus everything has changed. Hope these questions make sense.
    Thanks in advance.

    Not sure that I can answer all the questions...
    If your old computer has FW 400, then you need a FW 400 -> 800 cable or a FW 800 -> 800 cable with a 400 -> 800 adapter. They're available in Mac stores or online.
    If you have already gone through the setup on your new Mac, Setup Assistant will no longer be available - that is only available during the initial setup. What is now available is called Migration Assistant (Applications -> Utilities); the difference between the two is that the Setup Asst. will initially create one account - if you wait and use the Migration Asst, you have already created an account, so there could potentially be some problems. I used it and it took me quite a while to get rid of duplicate folders, permissions problems, etc.
    Also, since you're moving from a PowerPC to an Intel, there will be certain apps that may or may not work with the new OS - have you checked all your third party apps to make sure they will work not only with an Intel, but, more importantly, with Snow Leopard? If they will work with SL, you may still need to install Rosetta (you will automatically be prompted and it should then download and install) - that little app will allow you to run the PowerPC apps.
    And yes, you should make a complete backup before attempting to transfer - just in case. You could, if necessary, just drag 'n drop some of your own files/folders. I would also do the transfer first and then update individual apps.
    Here are a couple of threads/articles to help clarify:

    http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20070117075034219
    Because I've read that Migration Asst isn't the best way to transfer from PowerPC to Intel, I'd say either start over with your new machine (reinstall and use Setup Asst when prompted) or, if possible, use the drag 'n drop method which might be safer.
    Can't address the Office or Quickbooks questions because I have neither.
