More "Power light  on but no reboot" issues.

Hi everyone,
Sorry if this is a redundant topic. I have scoured this topic over the last few days and have see that this is quite the issue. Same problem as everyone else...turn on the power button...light comes on...computer does not boot...after a few minutes, the fans run at full blast. The consensus offered on other post seems that this is a power and maybe a logic board issue. No? My main concern is where I will lose the data on my HD once this is fixed?
What's amazing is that there is another thread on this forum discussing what may be a related. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=537819
Anyway, my G5 2.0ghz is a late 2004 model. I've done the tutorials as suggested from other post and Apple articles. From my research, I gathered that by resetting the SMU, this would fix the problem, but it has not. Have not opened the side panel yet, as this solution seem to apply only to late 2005 models of the G5 as indicated by an Apple article it read. Could I try this on my late 2004 model? I also unplugged the power cord from the computer for about 30 minutes and tried to restart, but same problem.
Here's some other info that may have led up to the problem. A few hours before the G5 went out completely, the computer became non-responsive. Solution, Press the power button to restart. Then small transparent black window appeared out of nowhere on screen I was viewing indicating that I should restart my computer. I did this and it rebooted fine. Shortly after the reboot, some technical data that where random tech words and characters and number appeared on my screen in a scrolling manner. I pressed the restart button on the G5 and that's when the problem of the computer not rebooting, but the power light coming on.
Thoughts anyone.

Sounds like you had a kernel panic, something is wrong.

If your machine has a PMU or SMU, it's the same process. Push it firmly just once for a few seconds.

  • Satellite P300 - power lights on, but nothing happens on screen

    Hello,
I have a Toshiba Satellite P300-1F0, yesterday it was working fine, I turn it off without nothing extraordinary happens.
Although later when I wanted to turn it on I pressed the power button but the screen wasnt working, I tried to connect an external screen but nothing was shown on it, although the power lights were on, the cd reader opened and closed like normally does, and I could hear the fans working.
Than I realise the windows 7 welcome sounds weren't playing even after some minutes with the laptop turned on, and that the mouse laser only worked for some seconds before it turns off.
This was when I started to belive that it wasnt a screen problem but something else.
I read some forums, and I tried to disconnect the power cable, take out the battery, pressing the power button for 60sec and turn it on, and it worked, everything was working fine, I used the computer for some hours without any issue.
Today the same problem occured, and I tried to fix it the same way I did yesterday, holding the power button for 60 sec, but this time it didnt work. I retried this for 3 to 5 times and nothing.
After some hours letting the computer turned off, resting, I retried the process and now it worked.
Now I'm afraid to turn off the laptop, because to turn it on I need a lot of pacience and time.
What could be the problem, and how I solve it?
    Can you help me?
    cumpliments,
    Adriano

Yey, sometimes this workaround is helpful to bring the unit back the life.
    > What could be the problem, and how I solve it?
Its difficult to say what cause this. The Satellite P300 is an old notebook model therefore it could be possible that one of the hardware parts starts to malfunction.
It would be interesting to know if usage of different RAM modules would change the notebook functionality. If you have some spare compatible RAM modules you could test it.
In worst case it could be possible that notebook motherboard start to malfunction.
This would be the worst case I hope for you that its not mobo related issue.
PS: check if your BIOS is up to date. In case its not the latest version, try to update the BIOS.

  • Toshiba AT 100 Tablet - Power light on but cant turn on or off

I have a tablet that has been working fine since new. Just today it went to sleep while on charge. The power light and battery lights are both on and white. I cant get the power button to turn off or back on again. the screen is black.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what might help?

    Dear Sallyamci,
most certainly you either solved your problem or sent your tablet back in the past weeks. But I just wanted to tell what I experienced with the Toshiba AT200 (different tablet I know). Perhaps it is of help for someone.
What I have experienced could be described of a stall of the android OS. On a PC you would press the Reset Button or turn off/on the system. On a smartphone you might remove the accumulator to force the system being reset. This is not possible on the AT200 (and I'm unsure about the accumulator in the AT100).
My AT200 recently went black (or did not return from stand by) while in use. In my case the lights weren't on and also did not go on when connecting the power supply.
I put the tablet back into the box planning to bring it back to the dealer on the next day. In the evening I took the tablet back out the box (for one last try) just to recognize that it was warm so I thought it was still running.
The next morning the power led lit when I connected the power supply. And after some time (30min) the tablet could be switched on again.
So probably the battery drained during the night forcing the tablet to turn off (hopefully before the battery was completely empty). That led to a reset.
So one could leave the tablet alone (with no power supply connected) in such case and hope that after some hours (or at most some days if it really was in standby) the low battery forces a power off.
If there's any hard reset possibility (hidden switches) for the tablets I would be happy to know about it. Just in case this happens again.

  • Satalite Pro Power lights come on but nothing else ??

    Hello All,
A quick question. Have been given a Satalite Pro. The Power lights up but nothing else.
I've tried the HDD in my Portege m200 and its running XP Pro. The Satalite Pro has 1 > 512 ram stick inside.
The overall condition is good and i'm tempted to spend a few shillings to try and bring it back to life or are we talking major surgery.
My knowledge is basic so would have to pass on to get fixed.
Would welcome your thoughts / suggestions.
    Thanks
    Neil

    Hi
I dont know which Satellite Pro you have exactly but if your Portege M200 uses the same RAM modules, you should try this to exchange them. Sometimes the notebook doesnt start due faulty RAM modules. They are exchanged in few minutes and not expensive.
I doubt that the HDD would be the problem. If the HDD doesnt work, you able to access the BIOS at least.
In worst case its related to other expensive parts like CPU or mainboard. :(

  • Won't power on, but power light blinks.. eh?

    Howdy all,
I was just on my machine, just turned it on and was getting ready to launch a game, when it locked up.  So I reboot... Nothing.  Try again... nothing.  Unplug the PSU, plug it back in, hit the power button... nothing but a blinking power light LED.
I've looked all over the site to find any info on this but can't seem to locate any.  Does anyone have any ideas as to what is going on?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Ok, just got the Enermax 550w PSU w/ 36A on all pos rails, and I'm getting the same issue.  When the PSU is plugged in and switched on, the power LED slowly blinks.  When I hit the power button, absolutely nothing happens.  Nothing powers on, and that darned power LED just keeps on blinking away!
I've cleared the CMOS, verified and reverified all the connections within the case.  I've even played with the power/reset/LED/etc headers (such as making the reset button the power switch), but nothing seems to work.  I'm starting to think it's time to RMA the board.
Any other ideas or tricks?  This is, to say the least, quite annoying!    However it was a great reason to get a fantastic PSU, hehe.
EDIT: I just installed a system speaker, and there are no audible beep codes.

  • My lenovo g510 shows black screen every time I power it on but the power lights are on .

Every time I power on my laptop it shows black screen.but fan is running and power lights are on. After detaching and reattaching battery several times onece screen turns on and laptop then works smoothly.but after shutting it down again on next day same problem persists. I have already tried power drain out method.but on the next go same problems arises.what to do.

    Hi Anish1,
    Welcome to the Forums
As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with black screen in your Lenovo G510 laptop.
As you have mentioned that black screen when turned on, can you hear the windows login sound?
Remove the battery and connect only adapter and check for the issue also connect only battery and check for the issue.
Connect an external monitor and check if the display appears in the external monitor then its a issue with the LCD, if there is no display in the external monitor then it might be issue with the motherboard, hence suggest you to visit the nearest authorised service centre.
Click here for the service centre and select your region.
    Best regards,

  • Power Mac G5 turns on, but no power light

Today I turned on my G5 to recover some files off an old iMac hard drive (can't very well read HFS+ using Windows), and my G5 refused to boot. Your press the power button, the power light flashes normally when you press on the button, but it powers on but the power light never comes on and there isn't a "bong" sound. The fans come on normally, but after a while the fans start picking up speed until they are at full speed.
I tried swapping ram, no change. Pulling ram, no flashing lights, pulling air deflector shield, full speed fans and red light (tells me something is working at least), swapping the video card, pulling the video card and still nothing. The 17" Studio Display power button works to turn on the system, but it has no light either saying the computer is on.
Based on the full speed fans after a while, I'm willing to say I have a failed processor, but that is just a wild guess as I don't normally work with Macs (although I do want an Intel Mac, but they cost more than my mom makes in a month).
The system is a Dual 2 GHz Power Mac G5 with 2 gigs ram, 80 GB hard drive, Plextor PX-712A DVD burner (I got this with a DVD-ROM), stock Radeon 9600 Pro and an Airport Extreme card. It runs Mac OS 10.5.8 and has worked great up until today.

Hi, the fans going full speed is just a safety feature when no OS loads to check & control them.
Well, especially since it seems it's been off for awhile...
Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange startup problems...
See which one your G5 has...

I have a power PC that makes abunch of noise when plugged in but the power light just blinks when I press it and shows no graphics wht is wrong

Click here for information; if the computer beeps three or fewer times, remove and reinsert the computer's RAM. If it beeps four or more times, it needs to be repaired. If it's a G5, it will ignore RAM modules that aren't part of a matching pair.

  • I have bought the wireless keyboard for my iPad.  I was working for a day but now the power light won't stay on and as such won't connect to the iPad.  I have changed the batteries but still no difference.

I have bought the wireless keyboard for my iPad.  I was working for a day but now the power light won't stay on and as such won't connect to the iPad.  I have changed the batteries but still no difference.

Not knowing which wireless keyboard you bought, it is difficult to be specific.  but ...
it is quite normal for the keyboard's power light not to stay on - it is a way of conserving battery power.
    Try this:
    turn you keyboard off
on your iPad go to Settings > Bluetooth
if your keyboard is listed under Devices, then touch the little blue i to its right and choose Forget this Device
now reset your iPad:  hold both the Home and Power buttons down for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears, let go promptly when the Apple logo appears and wait another 30 seconds for your iPad to turn itself on
After your iPad is back on again go back to Settings > Bluetooth
now turn your keyboard back on and see if it appeard under Now Discoverable
if it doesn't read your keyboard guide to figure out how to put it into Discovery mode
touch the listing for your keyboard under Now Discoverable, it should now appear under Devices
touch the listing for you keyboard under Devices, and choose to pair with it.

  • My mac book pro is on, but the power light indicator is not on, the battery charging light is not on, and the computer is making a whirring sound, what is wrong

My mac book pro is working, but my power light is off, the battery power light is not on and my battery power symbol is a black x. My computer is making a whirring sound sort of like it does when  loading a CD. I had a hard time getting the computer to turn on, used the command, option, P and R buttons to turn in on. I have tried restart, but I still get the whirring sound. What is wrong and what do I do?

Didn't do an SMC reset. But in attempting to find out about what that was I found some things to try first. Also, when I went to system preferences - hardware, I couldn't find anything regarding power and battery info. Finally, I unplugged the computer for several seconds, then shut it down, removed the battery, put the battery back in. Then I turned on the computer, plugged in the power cord. Problem solved- no whirring sound, battery charging light is on.
Thanks for getting me in the right direction.
