More Power

Hi Everyone
Im planning to buy a Mac Pro (The Monster), according to the tests on graphic cards that you can see on http://www.apple.com/macpro/features/graphics.html. It shows that the ATI Card is lot better then the Nvidia Card.
So my question would be will 3x NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB GDDR3 be stronger then 1x ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB GDDR for 3D Softwares as maya?

Future specs for DisplayPort show it will become possible eventually to drive as many as 4-6 displays off one card, or once more bandwidth.
DisplayPort 1.2 spec doubles bandwidth, adds features
http://techreport.com/discussions.x/18328
ATI showed off a card with 6 but of course we never know if, let alone whether, a feature or technology will find a place, though adoption of DisplayPort does seem to be moving in that direction.
I think you meant Nvidia GeForce, and while on PC you find they are powerful cards, on Mac, Apple's drivers never or rarely unleash the power and potential; hence, ATI for 2D and most Apple's programs is the better choice; but just not 3D where GTX shines.

  • Laptop-mode draws more power than no laptop-mode

    Hey all,
I finally took the plunge and installed laptop-mode-tools. I edited the main configuration file to my liking and enabled those extra powersaving features I need. The other ones I have disabled. However, when I enable laptop-mode my battery is drained faster than without! I am pretty sure this is not what it should do
I'm clueless as for where to look though, because I didn't change any critical setting (AFAIK) and I didn't enable any 'extra' features: i just enabled those found in /etc/laptop-mode/conf.d that I need and disabled those that I don't need. Can you help me pin-point which feature of laptop-mode-tools draws more power out of my battery?
Here's the list of features I have enabled:
    auto-hibernate.conf
    dpms-standby.conf
    ethernet.conf
    intel-hda-powersave.conf
    intel-sata-powermgmt.conf
    lcd-brightness.conf
    nmi-watchdog.conf
    runtime-pm.conf
    sched-mc-power-savings.conf
    sched-smt-power-savings.conf
    terminal-blanking.conf
    usb-autosuspend.conf
    wireless-power.conf
    Those that I have disabled:
    ac97-powersave.conf
    battery-level-polling.conf
    bluetooth.conf
    configuration-file-control.conf
    cpufreq.conf
    eee-superhe.conf
    exec-commands.conf
    hal-polling.conf
    start-stop-programs.conf
    video-out.conf
    wireless-ipw-power.conf
    wireless-iwl-poweac97-powersave.conf
    battery-level-polling.conf
    bluetooth.conf
    configuration-file-control.conf
    cpufreq.conf
    eee-superhe.conf
    exec-commands.conf
    hal-polling.conf
    start-stop-programs.conf
    video-out.conf
    wireless-ipw-power.conf
    wireless-iwl-power.confr.conf
    Thanks in advance!
PS: if you need any files, please tell me. As I said I am clueless what could cause this, so I could give you a list of all the laptop-mode files I have edited but I don't think this would help anything.
EDIT: I have disabled the cpufreq one because I use cpupower and have that setup without any laptop-mode-tools interference. I use the on-demand governor all the time. An extra question: do I need those sched-{mc,smt} features in laptop-mode, if I have configured those in cpupower as well? For now I left them in, but I was gonna figure this one out still.

Finally had the time to do some testing with powertop. The highest result I get are these:
    Top causes for wakeups:
    35,8% (309,7) [Rescheduling interrupts] <kernel IPI>
    28,8% (248,8) PS/2 toetsenbord/muis/touchpad interrupt
The first I have also without laptop-mode, the second I don't have. However, it does seem to drain a little slower now. Anyway, any hints to persue to get those wakeups down?
    PS: powertop also suggested this:
Suggestion: Enable the CONFIG_INOTIFY kernel configuration option.
This option allows programs to wait for changes in files and directories
instead of having to poll for these change
Does the Arch kernel have that by default or do I have to build my own kernel for this?

    Pro Tools 10.3.7
    Interface Apollo 16
Pro Tools is curretnly not compatible with Maverick.   Also, I believe that Pro Tools 10 only allows 4GB ram to be utilized (not sure )
I know Pro Tools 11 allows more, but not sure how much more.  Also not sure if the upgrade to Pro Tools 11 I will have to purchase all new plug ins or if my existing ones will continue to work in it.
The platform changes from 32 bit to 64 with the upgrade to 11
If it is as simple as adding more ram, what mode-part #l would you recomeend.  Can the processor be upgraded also ?
The new tube like Macs are non compatible with UAD Cards.  Those cards a must my sessions

You can use Activity Monitor to check if apps run as 32 or 64 bit - simply look at the "Kind" column (you may need to select it under View -> Columns) and see if the app in question is listed as "Intel" i.e. 32 bit or as "Intel (64 bit)".
While in Activity Monitor you can also check if Pro Tools is close to the 3-4 GB limit of a 32 bit app - if you aren't you will probably not benefit from more RAM.
Your MacPro (it appears to be a Early 2009 model) should have come with a small booklet showing how to install RAM and what kind of RAM that you need. Any RAM that fulfills the requirements should work but your safest choice is probably to buy from a retailer/online store that supports Macs as they will usually know what kind of RAM you need for your mac model.
Upgrading the CPUs should be possible, but I haven't seen Apple document how to do this, so you will probably have to google around a bit to find instructions and CPU part numbers.
Your choice of CPUs will also be limited by the motherboard and CPU socket so you may be limited to faster version of your current CPU chip and some slightly newer versions.
Going from your current CPU to the fastest version included in the 2009 MacPros would be going from 2.26 GHz to 2.93 GHz. This would only give a modest 30% speed boost. Using newer and highly clocked CPUs might boost this somewhat more maybe to 50% ?

Hi Since updating to ios 7.04 i have noticed the phone consumes so much more power. I have to charge the phone twice sometimes 3 times a day. WHY?

    Hi,
Thanks! I forgot to add, I have debonded and rebonded the bluetooth in car and phone and have carried out 3 restores on the phone in my ITunes. All to no avail. I have also jsut spent £40 on a lead from Ford that has made no difference too! I went to them today to request a software upgrade on my car as I though perhaps the lack of connectivity in the car was down to the car being behind the iOS5 software but was informed there was no need for an upgrade and this problem is purely an apple problem! Is there any way around the downgrade? Or are apple gong to resolve this problem at all??

  • Faces Has More Power in Aperture vs. iPhoto

I came across this on Apple's site for Aperture:
The popular Faces feature in iPhoto comes to Aperture 3, where it has even more power.
What added power does Aperture bring that iPhoto does not?

Well ... does the Apple site say anything?
    Aperture takes Faces further.
Aperture 3 expands on the power of Faces in iPhoto. Not only can you view the people you name across the entire library, you can now see them in individual projects. And the new Show Unnamed Faces pane displays all the detected-but-not-yet-named faces in a project to help you easily add names
I don't use iPhoto, so I can't comment on whether this has changed in the interim for iPhoto.

  • KDE 4.6 more power hungry?

    Hello there.
Just upgraded to the latest KDE release, which worked greate, only thing I noticed is that through Powertop KDE 4.6 seems more power hungry. It seems to draw around 3~4 watts more, does anyone else notice something along the same line?

occam wrote:I see in 'System Activity' that dbus-daemon uses 32% and nepomukserver 22% of the total CPU capacity when running KDE 4.6
In KDE4.5.* those percentages were less than 2%.  Maybe this has a bearing on your observation?
Thats the strange part, my system is behaving like with 4.5, nothing is using excessive amounts of CPU or Mem.
locke87 wrote:Well, I had this as well. I removed all files from Nepomuk and akonadi (After stopping both), that solved the issue.
Could you post how you did that? I have turned off Nepomuk, don't know about akonadi.

  • Why my ipad (4th Gen) consume more power when reading books in ibook than surfing over wifi

when i m reading my books in ibook it consume more power .I notice that power decrease 1% per 4 minutes

Power consumption increases significantly when the screen is set to a high brightness. If you are using your iPad ins a bight environment, for example, outside, flourescent lights, etc. and have auto-brightness turned ON then the iPad will automatically increase screen brightness resulting in higher power consumption.
Also using small changes in battery percentage to predict total power reserve is not very accurate.

  • More power with a USB 3.0 cable?

I have an external drive that uses a y-cable to get enough power to operate. Would a USB 3.0 cable deliver more power to my external hard drive so I don't have to use the y-cable?

No. The power is determined by the port, not the cable. Besides, there is no USB 3.0 hardware in the MBA.

My ipod touch don´t have much sound on music tracks (i already go to settings-music-sound limit unlock), i really need more power sound for using ipod to teach fitness classes what can i do!?

I imagine that... a limit of sound because ears problems understand that...but in my case i need power i´m not buying a better surround for the gym (the owner must do, but everyone use cd´s and i not see me record cd´s again) ...its the only problem for this iPod to be perfect.... I´m in Portugal, by the way!!! and thanks again for you helping!!

  • Does scheduled startup shutdown use more power

Hello. I have a computer that the power supply is starting to go out on. I've seen it multiple times and it's in it's early stages. My question is does using the scheduled startup and shutdown require more power and should I turn it off? Thanks.

Check all of your settings and make sure you have optimized them all, sometimes when you do an upgrade it changes your settings. ie, notifications, location services, date and time auto, etc.

GO ahead and lyao, he asked about raising vcore for more power. not raising vcore to clock higher for more power. I should have posted: Raising Vcore alone does not give you more power. My bad.

  • 9600M GT: 5W more power-draw after wake up from sleep?!

    Hey Ladies!
I measured the wattage of my Macbook Pro with both the 9400M and 9600M and found that the 9600M GT draws 5W more power after wake up from sleep than before sending the MBP to sleep.
Looks like a bug to me?!

  • How to get more power/capacity from my G5 2GHz DP, PPC?I own a fully max'd

I have a max'd out G5 Dual 2 GHz PPC w/2GB DDR SDRAM. Have 2 hard drives but are also max'd out - now effecting performance speed. I use the mac 99% for editing Video and Audio. Movies and files are stored on external HDs. If I am reading my specs right, I have 8 slots, of which 4 are incorporating 512MB RAM sticks - does this meran I can add more RAM? For some reason I thought 2 GB was max??? If this is a "can-do" - will this increase my speed-power? Keeping in mind I'm at near total capacity on the HDs (using HD2 as start up drive, because HD1 has less space on it)can I add a third internal HD and make that one larger and designate it as the start up drive? Upgrading to OS 10.5 won't help it right? Thanks for helping me out, still getting the "bugs out" but I always seem to want more, more, more....(Geez, I sound like Billy Idol huh?) Thank you for your kind responses in advance.

I think you are on the right track. I would add 2 gig
of ram from either Crucial, or OWC. I would replace
one of your 250 gig drives with a 500 gig, they can
be had for about $150 now. You don't really have any
option to upgrade your video card right now...the
only one better than your 9800 is an X800 and they're
not available without paying an extreme price. For
whatever reason ATI isn't making them and no one
knows if they will in the future. I understand that
the nVidia 6800 is a great card but they're hard to
find and also expensive. I would stay away from
    inexpensive flashed PC cards.
On a maintenance note, have a backup strategy.
Download and run a utility like Onyx or Cocktail on a
regular basis. I'm hearing good things about
AppleJack...I think I'm going to give it a try but at
this time I don't know anything about it and I use
Onyx. Repair your permissions regularly and for sure
after any upgrade or install. DiskWarrior is my one
    can't be without utility.
I'm sure there are going to many other good
suggestions, there are several knowledgeable people
here and all are willing to help a fellow mac user. I
do believe that you're doing the right things to
extend the useful life of your G5 until you someday
buy a Mac Pro if that's your plan....I know that's
    mine!
THANK YOU VERY MUCH - I FEEL ENCOURAGED NOW. WILL TRY THE ADD-ON'S AND UPGRADE THE HD & REPORT MY FINDINGS TO THE FORUM. I BET THIS IS GOING TO "FIX IT UP" UNTIL I GET MY HANDS ON A NEWER, FASTER, BIGGER, & BETTER (WHICH DAY IS IT?) MAC. THANK YOU - I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR HELP!

  • Need more POWER?

    Few things...
I just unlocked my athlon xp 2400 now is running as xp 2600.
I had it running at 2200mhz but I think my ram is causing some problems (I have cheap ram) new ram is coming monday 1 oxz performance ddr2700 512mb
    Specs:
    Windows XP SP1
    K7N2 MS-6570
    Athlon XP 2400 unlocked @ 2088mhz FSB @ 333mhz multi @ 12.5
Ram brand no idea type -> ddr2700 2 sticks of 256mb slots 1 and 3
    52x Creative cdrom
    PlewWriter
    Barracuda 20gig hd
    Geforce4 TI 4200 overclocked.
    Anywho,
I have everthing set for the time being at fsp 166
So basically ram and front side bus are running at 333mhz.
    multipler is 12.5
    1:1 ratio with ram.
Now when im playing raven shield It will play like a champ and then just crash..
I had also some weird problems with the system just rebooting.
I am wondering if it could be my power supply ?
It is a 330watt power supply I thought would be plenty.
But after doing some guesstaments :P I may be running pretty close to the max of it.
Also in the PC 4 Alert voltages don't look like where they should be for example I have the vcore set at 1.70 volts
PC 4 Alert shows 1.66volts? it jumps alot
    3.3volts shows 3.22volts 5volts shows 5.05volts and 12volts shows 11.88volts
I would imagine that those should not be fluxuating that bad.
    Any help would be great.
    r00t 3:16

Your probably doing too much Ocing...your problem is probably with your memory since you know its cheap...
You probably only get a few more FPS in Raven Shield...which isnt really intense...just go with defaults till you get OCZ...not OXZ btw....and if its cas2, you should have much better ram for OCing...
Im assuming this is the tbird core as well...the 2400+ is stock at 266mhz fsb...your probably pushing that high as well...what kind of cooling are you using for that?
Although Im pretty sure you have a memory problem, dont overclock and see if you still have problems...sometimes you can only go as far as your weakest link...
If that OCZ memory is cas2...then you should be doing better....dunno how much of a perfomance gain youd get though since your running dual channel right now, but you should be able to OC it much better...or at least to the point where you are now and be stable...
