More Ram or X1900 Graphics Card?

I ordered my MacPro with the stadard graphics card and added 1Gb of Ram from Crucial. The question I have now is if I should opt for the upgraded graphics card (X1900) or an additional an additional GB of Ram?
My main use for the computer is web site design/development, graphic design and personal use. Main programs are Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, Word, and all of the iLife programs.
I don't play many games on the system now but am interested in doing so (hense the graphic card consideration).
So the question is... is the money best spent on the upgraded graphics card or Ram if I were to buy in the next couple of weeks?

I would put better graphic card at the bottom of the list with RAM and disk drives (and backups) coming first. You can also do graphics card later, but you might benefit from another 2-4GB RAM; couple hard drives to work with.
Getting optimized drivers for graphic cards can also take time, up to a year in some cases, so I wouldn't be in a rush, you aren't doing 3D games or environments. If you do the others and still feel like it, definitely. Or wait for the next video upgrade. I expect some "games" like X-Plane will take full advantage of a 512MB card, and 1GB are on the horizon.
Now if you were using Motion or something that is more highly dependent on the X1900, or if CS3 off loads some of the work to GPU. Supposedly HD quality is one of its selling points.

  • Can you add more RAM and a graphics card on T430?

I currently have 8gb of ram and onboard intel HD 4000 graphics on my T430.
I'm trying to play some games on my computer so, I would like to know if there is a slot to install an aftermarket video card plus ram expansion capacity of T430.
    Thank you.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Yes for the RAM - T430 will accept up to 16GB.
No for the graphics card, there is no upgrade path for that.

  • 10.5.5 + PowerMac G5 w/ ATI Radeon X1900 Graphics Card (256MB) Bad combo.

10.5.5 is not displaying video properly. Elgato seemed to have narrowed it down to a specific computer setup with an OpenGL change from the 10.5.5 update.

My screen shot is the one used in the knowledgebase document. I now see that Apple DVD Player and flip4mac in quicktime have the same look. The audio is fine. VLC can play all of the files with no problem.
If you have the same setup:
PowerMac G5 tower (single or multiple processor), with a ATI Radeon X1900 Graphics Card (256MB) please post if you are having this problem or not.

The fastest way (which will take a while) is to:
    1) Make sure you have an up to date backup with time machine.
    2) Boot from your Leopard install disc or disc that came with your computer.
    3) When choosing an install method you can choose an archive and install or erase and install.
    4) After the OS is installed it will ask you if you want to restore files from another drive, partition, mac or time machine.
    5) Choose time machine and get your files restored.
    6) Once the mac is started up.
    7) Go here http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1054comboupdate.html and download the 10.5.4 combo update.
8)You then need to use software update to install all of the updates that came after 10.5. UNCHECK the 10.5.5 Combo Update. You can even select to ignore that update by checking the box next to so that it is selected and then selecting ignore update from the update menu in the menu bar.
I have not tried using Time Machine to go back an OS version. I will experiment with that.
I can also tell you how to clone your drive to another drive using the same DVD as above and two hard drives.
    I hope this helps.

  • X1900 Graphics Card and Cinema Display

I was wondering if anyone else had issues with their cinema display and the x1900 graphics card. I noticed that when the screen is black, there are lots of white pixels dancing around. Can anyone confirm if they also have this issue? Any solutions?

That sounds like a defective video card to me.
I have a x1900 (but hooked up to a dell monitor) and I've not seen any artifacts dancing around. Either on boot up, or waking up from sleep or when I'm running any software.

  • After Effects CS5  Ram, Codecs and Graphic card

hi im using AF CS5  with all latest updates. I have few questions
i have problem with codecs included in CS5. could please someone tell me why when i try to "render  que" and i tried every possible codec included in AF cs5 the output is rubbish like hell. i been reading googling etc some on Adobe forums, some people say use 32bit instead 8bit, other say use this codec instead that one another say maybe maybe hmmm maybe .../.. let me think ahhh this codec isnt supported in AF cs5 yet it will be in next 2025 release.
could please someone tell me what codec should i use to make output look like standard video instead crappy sh**t?
ram preview work great no problems when i save on my desktop ram preview, it use auto  AVI WRAW (1gb/min)  and the video look great im satisfied.
when i checked add to render que codecs under avi, wraw isnt included so i cant use it but why the hell ram preview use this codec?
when i use quick time mpeg avi etc codecs included in cs5 the output look like i dont even know how to describe it look very bad. i tried also encode the shi**y output trough media encoder tried h264 etc tried to use other third party software to correct AF bad output and nothing helped and im tired.!!!!!
how can Adobe sale something crapp that doesnt work ?!!!
    where is WRAW ?
what codec should i use to make my 2 min clip look good ?
another thing i got with AF thing called media encoder could please someone tell me why the hell i cant encode AVI movie in it ??? and then make out of it FLV or MPEG etc ?
the result after making out of avi flv or mpeag etc  is that the sound disappear probably everyone in Adobe know it. could you please sort it out ?!!!!
why when i use free encoding software such as mediacoder etc no problem with AVI decoding encoding etc?
Another Question i have 4x ATI HD4850 installed so i would like to use it right ?? why? cuz everyone on earth know that normally graphic cards are designed for graphics.. not when you use Adobe products. Adobe preffer to make people buy 280gb of ram and 20 x Q9000 quad core.
why the f***K open GL After Effects doesnt work ???? just dont ask me what opengl ver do i have !!!! when i use open gl the rendering is slower with Gpu than than using the CPU whys that? why it isnt in MAYA ??? etc
people buy product people expect it to work right ?not install it then install all plugins you need, then try try and try to make AF work. AF remaind me Linux  still use it sometimes, when you install ubuntu you need a bit of time to make your graphic card work sound etc many of your devices wont never work cuz they arent supported no drivers or buggy drivers. the thing about linux is that it is free.
Adobe cost money so people expect it to work i dont have time to wait or try to make it work for the next 5 years !!!!!

If you're looking for help this is a great place to be. Just maybe dial back the "adobe sucks" rhetoric a bit. The folks here are  extremely helpful but I think they're all volunteering their time so try to keep that in mind. Nothing wrong with complaining and/or suggesting improvements. Just try to respect the process and be patient. If you ask one or two specific questions (i know you did re: sound in .avi files) you'll get help faster.
wish I knew why OpenGL for rendering was still so bad. I was told long time ago "just don't use it for rendering" and I've followed that advice ever since. Maybe someday it'll be useful. Meanwhile it works great for everything else inside AE so I don't condemn the whole idea of OpenGL in Adobe products. Every CS release supports it more and more...they'll get there. For now just don't use it for rendering and you'll be fine.
At least you're using CS5 and can take advantage of all your RAM. just think, a few short years ago...
Sorry I can't help you with your missing audio in .avi. I generally render to QT or an img sequence and then layer my audio on top of that.
If you find an answer post back - I'm sure it will help someone else.
    Good luck!

  • Freezing Macbook Pro. Graphical glitches and occasional 3 tones on start up. Hardware test shows no errors. Is it RAM or a graphics card on the way out, or software?

Recently my MacBook Pro has been freezing and showing bad graphical glitches. Multiple restarts eventually fix it and a couple of times the three tones break, three tones break warning has occurred on start up. From what I can find this is usually a RAM error but after doing a hardware check I get the response all is OK. This still happens after the check and I am unsure what the problem could be. Can anyone help? Could it be a memory issue, a hard drive issue, Graphics card issue (drivers are up to date) or is something up with the software. I also have a Bootcamp partition running Windows 7 too and this is a problem that presents itself there too.

    Most likely to be RAM:
    Beeps on startup:
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images.
5 beeps = processor is not usable

I would suggest you take it to an Apple Store for a free diagnostic.

  • PC with ATI X1900 Graphics card - Can't drive my 23" Apple display

I recently assembled new PC with A8N-SLI mobo and ATI X1900 All-in-Wonder card (with DVI-I out) driving a new Apple Cinema 23" display. I've not been able to get the display to come up on boot except for a few occasions when I disconnect and reconnect the ADC cable to the power supply after boot. I'm guessing this problem has to do with mixing Apple and PC (OK, it was a gamble).
Any ideas on how to get this combination working?
    Thanks.

  • How can i allocate more RAM for my onboard video card on a 2011 macbook pro 13 inch running windows 7 via bootcamp

I noticed that since Macbooks.. macs in general use an EFI instead of BIOS.  . .. Now i need to allocate some more RAM for the onboard video card since its currently running with an estimated 50mb.. I would like to increase this to 512  and cut the 3.95 down to 3.5 MB for the rest of the system ( allowing me to run more graphic intensive games and the such ... ) I know this could slow down the entire system.. ( i am aware of this ) and have gotten a 3rd party application to control and close out uneeded processes during gaming.. I just need more ram for my onboard video card.. Any help?

You don't allocate more RAM towards your video card, you put more RAM into the machine and hopefully some machines will bump the CPU graphics RAM allocation up a little.
The problem is you bought a integrated only graphics computer, if you want to 3D game you need a dedicated graphics computer with it's own or dedicated VRAM.
If your this serious about 3D gaming, your on the wrong platform.
Get a Windows 7 64bit i7 8GB RAM expandable 3D gaming tower with a good power supply and video card upgrade path, this way every few years you buy and stick in a new video card to play the latest games.
Mac's are not gaming machines and never will be because they would last too long if we could upgrade them.

You have shared RAM you don't have dedicated Video RAM that is shared with your regular Computer RAM.

  • Allocating more memory to graphics card on HP Pavilion dv7-6157cl

The graphics card in the laptop is AMD Radeon HD 6520G which has the 512mb dedicated and up to 4gb shared, but wondering if there is a way to change that 512mb to 1g or so dedicated and then the rest. It's pulling that 512 from my system ram which I have a total of 8g any insight would be great! thanks!

  • X3100&NVS140M graphic card, which one can take more quickly in ultiboard Show 3D?

anyone can tell me,X3100&NVS140M graphic card, which one render speed more quickly,in ultiboard show 3D?
Actual,I used nvs140m graphic card more slowly than x3100 graphic card obviously. It's right or not?

I don't think anyone will be able to definitely tell you that one particular graphics card will be better than the other. There are just too many factors. The only way to tell would be to test over and over, and even then, you may not get consistent results.

  • Processor v Ram v HDD v Graphics Card

I'll be purchasing a 27" iMac in the next few days.
My ideal config is a little over my budget, so I'm deciding which would be the best to go.
    I was planning on
    27" i7
    16MB Ram
    1 TB Fusion
    NVIDIA GeForce Card 4GB
Dropping either the Processor, Ram, HDD or Graphics Card to the level before brings be back within budget.
I use Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign professionally.   For fun I do a little video editing, but I'm talking about our holiday not a major production!  No real gaming.   In the next year I'd like to start playing with 3D printing, but not professionally.
    Any suggestions?

    Drop the ram.
The 27in iMAc still allows you to add ram after you get it from Apple. Doing that will save you both money up front and money when you buy the ram from a source other then Apple.
The system will run OK with 8gb and if you have the need to upgrade you can add  it in yourself later. at a much lower price.
Message was edited by: Frank Caggiano 4gb for the graphic card is a but extreme also IMO. Unless you're doing a lot of high end video processing not sure it will get you much for image files.
