More space for documents is needed?

Hello Community
    Using Sharepoint 2010 Server and the UI, since a web application
has shared documents they are stpred on the SQL Server WSS databases.
    But when there is no more space on the SQL Server content databases to
store anymore documents when more documents are created where will those
documents get stored?
    Fyi, RBS is not being used but at what point do you convert to RBS and where
is RBS stored?

Running out of space on your SQL server in a SharePoint environment would be a very bad thing. If you are running out of space you need to either move to a new SQL server with more space or add additional storage to your existing server. If
SQL runs out of space SharePoint will stop operating. Third party RBS solutions provide some flexibility on where to store document BLOBs but the built in version uses FileStream so it will store document Blobs on the same drives as the SQL databases. So
if you are running out of space on the server RBS won't help.

Recently, our mail server crashed at about 7pm one night, with the error 'There is no more space for virtual disk ServerName_2.vmdk. You might be able to continue this session by freeing disk space on the relevant volume, and clicking Retry. Click Cancel to terminate this session.'
When we click Retry, the server starts up OK.
There are no snapshots listed in Snapshot manager for any of the virtual machines on the host.
There is also free disk space available on the host and for the VM with the disk errors.
This happened at least three more times, often at bad times. Each time, we were able to click 'Retry' and the disk/system would allow the VM to start-up successfully.
I checked the Forums, the VMware support articles and the internet as I had not seen this problem before. I have completed the VSphere 5.1 - Fast Track course and this issue was NOT covered in the training.
Most of the advice on-line and even that on the VMware web-site was pointing to snapshots being the cause of this issue. There are no snapshots enabled and I cannot see evidence of snapshots ever being used.
- We are running VMware vsphere (5.1.0) and there are (were) 4 virtual machines running on the ESX host. We are using the free version of VMware/ESXi.
- The Hard disk types we are using for this Virtual Machine are 'Thin Provisioned'.
- There are 4 [Thin Provisioned] Hard Disks for this virtual machine.
- There are 6 CPUs
- There is 20GB of RAM (memory)
- The VM is running Windows Server 2008 R2 as the guest/VM operating system. It is an Exchange 2010 SP1 mail server. There is plenty of available disk space on all the drives. The [Exchange] log files are cleaned out regularly (automated).
I decided to move one of our non-critical servers off this host and on to another host to see if this helped the problem. This took quite some time, as we are not using HA or vmotion, nor do we have VCenter Server...nonetheless, I finally managed to get the non-critical server on to another host (n.b. This was a much smaller machine with less virtual resources assigned to it).
After moving the non-critical server off this host, we decided to monitor the Host and see if the issue resolved itself.
I checked the host about 6-10 times a day, from first thing in the morning till last thing at night - monitoring the performance of not only the Virtual Machine, but the ESXi host also.
There were no adverse performance issues. The only thing I did note, was in the Summary page on the ESX Host, under Storage, was If I right-clicked on the datastore and clicked refresh, then the free disk space would drop (ie from 140GB to 125GB).
After monitoring the host and VM for about 2 weeks, we did NOT have another instance of the above error.
Sorry for the long winded post, but I wanted to give as much detail given this error has been raised before and snapshots are usually blamed as the cause.
My question is this:
If the ESX host had plenty of available disk capacity and there were no snapshots enabled on the VM (or any other VM's on the same host), then why did our Virtual machine crash with the error that 'there is not more space for virtual disk Servername_2.vmdk'?
How do we prevent this issue from happening if we don't know the underlying cause?
I would greatly appreciate any advice or suggestions.
If I have not provided enough info on the specs or environment, please let me know and I will provide more information.

The type of storage is really based on your requirements, and your ability to withstand downtime.
iSCSI as you are using with a NAS such as Synology or QNAP. NAS Selector - Support - Synology - Network Attached Storage (NAS)
I wouldn't use iSCSI for Exchange or any database. It's a bit slow.
Do you have a single physical host? Then I'd probably to an external direct attached storage. This would be a card inserted in your host server that gives you multilane SAS/SATA connectivity (www.techcable.com/SAS-SATA/SAS-SATA.pps) and an external disk enclosure/array.
For multiple hosts to a single array, I recommend a fibre channel connection to a FC capable switch, and on to a FC connected array.
We used to use a HP P2000 (on old G1), but it's since been retired. Worked pretty well once firmware was upgraded. http://www8.hp.com/us/en/products/disk-storage/product-detail.html?oid=4118559#!tab=features. They can be connected via iSCSI, Fibre Channel or 6GB SAS so they are flexible and reasonably priced.
Recommendations:
     Use RAID 6 with your large disk arrays. With large disks there is a measurable failure rate when rebuilding a failed RAID5 array based on MTBF.
     Use smaller 15K disks in RAID 0+1 for speed on databases/Exchange.
     Use slower 7.2K disks in RAID6 for file storage.
We are a small hospital and we have 3 VMware servers with dual CNA (FC and Ethernet in a single twinax cable) connections to 2 redundant Cisco Nexus 5K switches and then 4 Fibre Channel connections to an EMC VNX 5300. It's extremely fast with about 50 virtual servers, but was quite an investment. One thing we don't have to worry about is down time. If there ever is an equipment failure, we have redundant everything, including power split between two UPSs.
Our VNX has 3 tiers of performance. 3 100GB SSD "Fast Cache" in RAID 1 with hot spare, to keep the most used data ready, but it's not really a tier, however one could be built utilizing the same disks. A second tier is performance tier with a 8 600GB RAID 0+1 and hot spare. The third is a bunch of 7.2K 3TB disks in RAID6. The VNX autotiers, placing data on disks depending on where it's needed. The volumes are sliced and diced automatically in the background to make this happen and we never have to touch it. I used a demo of Solarwinds Storage Manager to monitor performance for a while and the utilization was always low, meaning all data access was fast, througout the day.

"Your Mac OS X Startup Disk Has No More Space For Application Memory"

I've been having a problem in the last few days with my Mac. I would be surfing the net, or doing whatever, and an error message would randomly pop up on my screen. It would say: "_Your Mac OS X Startup Disk Has No More Space For Application Memory_". Then the dialog box would give me the option to PAUSE or *Force Quit* applications. But instead of letting me click these buttons, my Mac would just automatically freeze after the dialog box popped up!
The odd thing is, is that I truly was NOT using that much memory...much less than I usually do. Plus I have 4 GB of RAM, and I know I wasn't maxing it out.
Does anyone know why this error message would be popping up like this (especially since there was no way that I was using all my Application Memory)? And does anyone know why my Mac just freezes instantly when the error message pops up?
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! It's quite hard use my Mac right now, since I never know when it's gonna freeze up on me!

I assume that means no backups? That's a problem you need to fix next.
You might be able to start your Mac in "Target Disk Mode" while connected to the other Mac. You do this by holding down the "T" key while booting. And I was wrong: you must use Firewire, not USB.
The other Mac will see your HD as an external F/W drive. You may have to "mount" it via Disk Utility, if it doesn't show up on the desktop and/or Finder sidebar.
You probably need to do a lot of examining what's not needed, and perhaps some maintenance, but you don't want to do that under pressure.
To get it running and buy just a bit of time, your best bet is to copy some big stuff (like video) either to the other Mac's hard drive or to one or more DVDs, then delete it from your HD.
Once you get several GB free, you should be able to boot it. Then get started cleaning it up. There are many threads in this forum with links and suggestions for how to do this. Just search for +Disk Full.+
Did this happen all of a sudden? If so, it's possible you had some sort of runaway or continually failing process, filling up some logs and/or caches. If you don't do routine maintenance, either by clearing your browser cache, etc., manually, or via an app like OnyX, that's another thing you might want to investigate.

Startup disk has no more space for application memory - itunes using 19GBytes!

I am having intermittent but recurring issues with the dialog "Your Mac OS X startup disk has no more space for application memory" and iTunes is listed as not responding. Activity Monitorsays iTunes consuming on various instances 16 and 19GBytes etc.
Any ideas??
System is a ~ 6month old 27" late 2012 iMac with OS X 10.8.4 32 GBytes RAM and 3TB disk with 2TB free. App Store says no updates.

Read this whole message before doing anything.
Back up all data.
Quit iTunes if it’s running.
Step 1
Hold down the option key and select
Go ▹ Library
from the Finder menu bar. Move the following items from the Library folder to the Trash, if they exist:
Caches/com.apple.iTunes
Caches/QCCompositionRepository-com.apple.iTunes.cache
Saved Application State/com.apple.iTunes.savedState
Leave the Library folder open. Try iTunes again. If it works now, stop here. Close the Library folder.
Step 2
If you still have problems, quit iTunes again. Go back to the Finder and move the following item from the open Library folder to the Desktop:
iTunes
Note: you are not moving the iTunes application. You’re moving a folder named “iTunes.”
Test. If iTunes now works, delete the iTunes folder on the Desktop. Otherwise, quit iTunes again. Put back the folder you moved, overwriting the newer one that may have been created in its place, and continue.
Step 3
In the Preferences subfolder, there may be several files having names that begin with either of the following strings:
com.apple.iTunes
com.apple.mobile.iTunes
Move them all to the Desktop.
Also in the Preferences folder, there's a subfolder named "ByHost". Open it and do the same thing.
Test again. This time iTunes should perform normally, but your settings will be lost. You may be able to put back some of the files you moved to the Desktop in this step. Relaunch and test after each one. Eventually you should find one or more that causes iTunes to malfunction. Delete those files and recreate whatever settings they contained.
If the issue is still not resolved, quit iTunes again and put all the items you moved to the Desktop back where they were. You don’t need to replace the items you moved to the Trash. Stop here and post again.
If you later decide that you don’t like the results of steps 2 and 3, you can undo them completely by quitting iTunes and restoring the items you deleted in those steps from your backup.

The same pictures in iPhone utilises half the storage space than in the iPad.

Photos on the ipad should take up little more space than It does on The iPhone because of the screen resolutions size.
Keep in mind If the photos are being stored on the device by Photo stream they will Take up less Space or if The photo Are being store by itunes syncing they may take up a little more.

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
4. Get an external hard drive on which to store some of your files after which you can
erase the data from your internal drive to free up space.
5. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
6. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
7. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

More space for widgets

Dear All,
Problem: Toolbar at the top of the screen has a finite size. It is populated as follows from left to right:
1) Apple icon on the top left
2) Drop down menu headers for current application
3) Miscellaneous other useful things such as the date, a battery charge indicator, spotlight etc, some standard and some that can optionally be added such as a network throughput monitor.
If there's insufficient space for all these the menus for the current application (2) have precedence over the miscellaneous widgets (3) and some of the latter are hiddden.
Is there a way of showing widgets obscured in this way?
I can get half way there: If I select a visible drop down menu on the top right of the screen and then press the left arrow, the next drop down menu to the left appears even if the icon at the top is obscured. The problem is that say with the network activity monitor the activity is shown in the icon which is obscured and not in the drop down menu.
I wish it were possible to click on the inch or so of blank bar between the application drop down menu headers and the miscellaneous widgets and have the hidden icons shown.
Otherwise is it possible to make the bar wider or put the widgets somewhere else, e.g. the dashboard?

Thanks for your response. Menu extras - I'll make a note of that. However:
I don't buy the argument about third party menu extras being the problem, taking up too much space. I ran a search under system settings to see how many entries I could find offering to put one or more icons in the menu bar. Here's the result:

Battery Status (external power and battery charge)

BlueTooth Status
Keyboard - national setting
Volume
Modem status
Bluetooth status
PPPoE status
Apple icon (top left)
I haven't checked that the synchronisation or bluetooth or PPoE search hits correspond to menu extras but all the others do. I don't have blootooth (yet) and haven't subscribed to .Mac but I could so they should be counted.
In toto (by the primitive mechanism of ruler on screen and assuming that the menu extras that I don't have up already are the same size as the smallest of those that I do have) that leaves me with 14.5 cm (6") in which to put the application specific menu entries on a 24.6 cm (10") wide screen, default resolution. That's 59% of the screen width, and insufficient space for the Safari menu items (with my language settings anyway).
I know the argument about an item on the edge of the screen being easier to select than one in the middle, but getting to an item at all must surely take priority over getting to it easily.
Besides this is software - it's meant to be easy to change. The default answer to most customisation questions should be: sure, just change this bit of code - it's so superbly documented that it won't take you half an hour to get the hang of it.
I'd pay a small sum - maybe 5 USD - or do half an hour of programming for a nice solution to the minor irritation of the menu bar problem. I'd pay more and put more effort into almost anything else on my wishlist. I shall therefore quietly set the problem to one side and consider the more vital things in life. Thanks again for the info regarding the guidelines. Appreciated anyway.

Java 1.4.1 - Could not reserve space for object heap - need help

I know this problem has been posted before, but I thought this was fixed in release 1.3. I'm using Windows XP/Professional and do the following:

Error occured during initialization of VM
Could not reserve space for object heap

java version "1.4.1_02"My computer system has 1 GB of RAM and a 2 GB pagefile, expandable to 3.5 GB. I can get going with -verbose:gc -Xmx1600m -Xms200m, but the GC only gets to about 1 GB before I get an out of memory exception, not even close to 1.6 GB as specified.
I'd really appreciate it if anyone can shed some light on this behavior.

surly apple will or should give me 10 gb on the same apple id .... 5gb for iphone and 5 for ipad ....

I can not get the pop up force quit to stop coming up.

Quit as many programs as possible, next do not turn off the machine, hook up a external drive and use it to move some large files off the machine (Movies work very well) as to free up space on the boot drive.
Moving requires copying then deleting the originals on the boot drive, reboot to regain the new free space in Activty Monitor in your Utilities folder.
If you have trouble copying or it doesn't work, make sure the file sizes are below 4GB on a external FAT formatted drive (normal for new drives)

If you wish to format a external drive so it can hold larger than 4GB sized files, then if it's only to be used with a Mac, then head to Disk Utility and Partition 1: Option GUID and OS X Extended Journaled as the format. (formatting a drive erases all present data on it)
If you use a external drive with a PC, take the drive (free of wanted data) to a Windows PC and right click on it and format exFAT (Windows XP needs to download exFAT from Microsoft first.) Mac's don't format exFAT correctly, so it can't be used with a PC. But the PC formats exFAT correctly and a Mac can read it (go figure?)

RGB and CMYK blend spaces for document creation

If I create a new document with the print profile it sets the blend space to CMYK. Will I be seeing a true representation of the colours or do I need to switch to an RGB blend spaces while creating the document then switch to CMYK when I'm ready to print?

I'm wanting to know what to set the colours to while I'm working on the document to make sure the colours I choose are going to be the same as what I print. I'd use RGB while creating a document onscreen then change to CMKY when I'm printing to maintain a true representation of colours. Can I do the same thing using the transparency blend space?
