More than one Library on two different computers

When I purchased my iTouch I took it to my work and downloaded itunes on that computer and imported hundreds of songs from some CD's. I had no problem syncing my iTouch. I recently downloaded itunes on my notebook at home and opened my library (or started a new one?) but none of my songs were there...so I bought some new ones and tried to sync them. A pop up said it had detected my itouch has been linked to another library? and I could either sync these songs which would erase all my songs on my itoch or I could manually drag and drop the new songs to my itouch. So can I not have two seperate libraries? How do I combine both? I'm really confused and I've searched the "help" in itunes to help me but I still confused???? Isn't there a flippen help hotline number???

Change it to manual sunc. Here's directions:

  • How do I share one library on two different computers?

I have a desktop G5 that has the majority of my music on it. I also have a MacBook Pro. They both have home sharing turned on. However, if I'm on the road with my MacBook Pro, I don't see a way to access the "shared" music from my home-based G5. Seems simple enough to figure out but I can't seem to get it.
I was  going to copy the iTunes folder from my G5 over to the MacBook Pro but transferring 2.4 GB is kind of a drag. Any other solutions?
    Thanks.
    Russ

The iCloud service would only work if you had a wifi connection when you are traveling.  You could also use a flash drive to store your music.  Same concept.  I can see how a big hard drive would get a bit annoying, but since your iTunes library is relatively small.  You could just get a small 4GB flash drive.  That would work fine too.  That is your only option unless you want to transfer that data whenever you travel, which wouldnt be too big of a hassle really, right?  iCloud requires a Network connection to work.

  • More than one library (on the same computer) open?

In the new iTunes 9 it is possible to access several libraries on my home network from the open iTunes window, which is really cool. I wondered if this means it may now be possible to have access to several libraries on the same computer (or connected drives) at the same time. I use 3 different libraries on my work PC and my mac at home and the process of shutting down iTunes, holding down shift/option, reopening itunes, selecting library is rather cumbersome. Having each of the libraries accessible the same way they are for other libraries on the network would be really useful.
    Is it possible?

I know it's Valentine's Day, but before you get your wife fixed up the first thing you need to do is recover the deleted albums for your own library.  See if the files are elsewhere on your hard drive, or in the Recycle Bin.  When you find them, get them back into your own library.  Now you are ready to help your wife.
As noted above, you can have two libraries in one Windows user account via the Shift-Start approach, but if you both use your libraries regularly, that becomes annoying quickly.  It is better to set her up with her own Windows user account. She can have her own iTunes library there.
Get a copy of your entire iTunes folder to start her off.  She can delete stuff she doesn't want without messing you up.

  • Can't sync to more than one library at a time

I have deauthorised my desktop running XP,installed latest version of iTunes on laptop running Vista and authorised. Connected iPod to laptop and tried to sync but keep getting message that "iPod is already synced to a library and cannot be synced to more than one library at a time." How do I get my library from desktop to laptop?

*How do I get my library from desktop to laptop?*
If our iPod is large enough to hold all of your iTunes it can be used as an external drive and you can move the iTunes folder from the old computer onto it and transfer everything to the new computer: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
Alternatively you can copy the contents of the iPod directly to the new computer. Connect your iPod to your new computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    SharePod Windows Only
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    Floola Mac & Windows
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible - Windows version only)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.

  • Can you display more than one library from the same account?

If I open iTunes on two computers in my house, I can only show one library on my apple tv. When I turn on the second computer, the first library goes away.
Can you show one at the same time?
    Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Yes you can share more than one library at a time, just make sure that the homesharing ID and password you use for each one is the same on all of the libraries.

  • If I have more than one library, how can I upload all photos to iCloud??

I have a couple of different iPhoto libraries. Now that I've upgraded to photos, I am using iCloud and it is currently uploading all the photos & videos from the library Initally opened. How can I upload the other libraries into iCloud?  Will they automatically upload once I use the option key and open the different library??
Also, does Photos need to be running for things to upload to iCloud?
    Thanks!
    Kristin

See the quote below from Designate a System Photo Library in Photos - Apple Support
iCloud and the System Photo Library
You can use iCloud Photo Library, iCloud Photo Sharing, and My Photo Stream only with the System Photo Library. If you choose a different library in Photos without designating it as the System Photo Library, the iCloud tab in Photos preferences is disabled:
If you designate a new library as the System Photo Library and then turn on iCloud Photo Library, the photos and videos in the new library will merge with those already in your iCloud Photo Library. If you want to keep the contents of your photo libraries separate, don’t turn on iCloud Photo Library for more than one library in Photos.

  • Posting topic to more than one thread and in different categories...

Is there anything in the TOU we can "refer" to when users post the same topic in more than one thread and to add to that, more then one category? Case in point: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8806009#8806009 (This is just one example)
Limnos had a valid point. If we had a section in the TOU we could copy/paste from, I think it would help if we could refer to authority, ie., TOU.
    Thanks!

I wouldn't get into too much of a flury about that with end users. Notify as needed and let the moderators decide if it needs to be deleted. A good rule of thumb is you want the discussions to have:
Everyone should feel comfortable reading Submissions and participating in discussions.
    That's from Terms of Use.
    And then there is:
You agree to not interfere with or disrupt the Site.
I'm seeing that logically one can conclude directing users not to crosspost may be considering interference with the site. I may suggest someone post in another forum if a solution is not transparent in the forum they are using, but that's as far as I'm comfortable bending the rules.
I'm trying hard to keep my thumbs away from the keyboard when I see duplicate posts.

  • Desktop went t/u, unable to save info, bought laptop and installed itunes, now when trying to sync itunes says I am conected with more than one library. I can't do anything. Please Help

Our desktop went t/u and was not able to save  any music files except what is on ipods. Bought laptop and installed itunes. Was able to load music from wifes "classic" that was bought through itunes but my "itouch" w/music not purchased will not sync. Itunes says I am connected to more that one "Library" and cannot sync. Anyone else ever hear of this happening?
    Thanks        James

To make your new computer do the following:
    - Transfer iTunes purchases
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer other music  by seeing:
    newer copy
    - Connect the iPod to the computer and made a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup.
Note that the backup does not included synced media like apps and music.

  • Why can't I have more than one library?

I've got multiple iTunes libraries- one on a computer at home, one on a computer at school. But whenever I try to access my new Shuffle iPod, on library always wants me to delete the other and replace it. What's up with that? Can I bypass it?
If I can't, where's the uproar? This is NOT user-friendly, Apple!

This how Apple has chosen to design the iPhone, likely to make piracy more difficult. It has never been any different.
Put everything on one computer, in one library, and sync from there.

  • More than one library and installing v.2

    Hi!
This is actually to separate questions, but the answers will affect both matters. I think.
    1) When I sold my Powermac G5 I moved the important tuff to en external disk. Among others; the Aperture library. I also have one Library (and the program) on my MacBook Pro, the machine I use in my daily work.
Question: Is it possible to merge these to libraries into one? Or; can I find an move the original files from one library to another? Would be most practical! If possibe, I´d be delighted to know how!
    2) I just got version 2, but have not installed it yet, because I´m worried I´ll be dealing with a third library. This is a full version, not an upgrade - my job bought this new version for me.
Question: Can I safely install version 2 and move my files into the new library and then delete the old version? I haven´t found any good info on this in the manuals.
    Best regards
    leif e

    Same problem here.
multiple libraries I need to combine.
method on another thread did not work under 2.0 and Leopard.
    Any ideas? Anyone?
I would benefit from a managed / coded feature to purposely merge libraries.
or perhaps a small automated script that works under Leopard for users with 2.0 but multiple old 1.5x libraries.
    Maybe it could:
    1. Allow u 2 designate primary / current 2.0 library and separate/ secondary library, which could be in either 1.5x or 2.0 format
    1. Duplicate secondary library (as backup) and place in "Old Libraries" folder
    2. Update any secondary 1.5x library to 2.0
    3. Merge secondary library with your designated primary 2.0 library.
Thus would be soooooo helpful to me, after working since day 1 with 4 different Macs in different locations for shooting.

  • Can I have more than one library open at a time?

I have multiple libraries and would like an easier way than closing and opening each one. Also it doesn't say which itunes library is open - they are all just called itunes

No, you can only have one library open at a time and iTunes will always default to the last one opened unless you use the key combination to choose one. When you create a new library you can give it a name to identify it by.

  • Can I have my iTunes Library on two different computers? One pc and one mac

I have my iTunes library on my office pc. I just bought a MacBook Air and want to have my library on there as well. I have an iphone that I have synced to both, but it will only let me keep my songs on my work pc. Is there a way I can have it on both?
    Thank you.

If it is only the media files that are on the external drive, with the library files in the default location of User's Music\iTunes then see Make a split library portable.

I have an itunes account with a large music library that I use with my own ipod.  My daughter is getting her own iPod soon. Can I share my library on her device?

Yes. The process isn't any more complicated than setting up the first iPod with your computer.
