More than one time machine backup..

Is it possible to make time machine backup to more than one location? I have a nice big 2TB drive at my office that I use for time machine and it works perfectly but I would also like to run a second time machine backup to a portable 1TB drive that I own so that I have a backup that I can carry around with me as well as the fixed backup I leave at my office.
When I last tried to backup to the portable drive it forgot all about the original backup so when I came to try and back that up again it wanted to run from scratch and ignored all of the files on the external drive.

I then ejected the big 2TB drive and re-connected the smaller 1TB portable drive. I opened TM and clicked on Backup Now
Did you change the destination via TM Preferences > Select Disk?  If not, that may be the problem.
Can't I just plug in different disks when I want and the system recognise them and run the appropriate backup for me?
No; you must tell TM when you swap destinations.
Did the new backup complete?  Are you sure TM was writing to the 1 TB drive?  There are some circumstances where OSX will "forget" that an external drive has been disconnected, and create a folder in the /Volumes folder on your internal HD; then Time Machine (or other app) will write there, instead of to the external HD.   See the blue box in Where did my Disk Space go? to check.

  • How to share more than one Time Machine folder

    Hi,
    With Snow Leo Server I found how to find how to share more than one Time Machine Folder but I can't see how to do the same with Lion Server, could you help me with that ?
    The goal of that is to offer one TM folder per user which is located on a dedicated partition in order to limit the size of TM backups per user (150Gig).
    In Lion, in can only share one TM folder for everybody and I didn'tfind if I can set a limit size per user...
    Thank you in advance,

    I have figured out a way to enable multiple backup targets.
    However, it's one of these things I wouldn't want to describe to anyone except true programmer types, because everyone else has a 90%+ chance of messing up their system if they do something wrong.
    It involves turning off file sharing, and then editing the plist files in /private/var/db/dslocal/nodes/Default/sharepoints/
    The gist of it is this:
    a) first create all the share points you later want to use for TimeMachine, and set them up for afp-only file sharing, also create one TM target, which you can either use later, or have there so the system has one entry it knows how to handle. I just made a bogus one that I'm not actively using.
    b) turn off file sharing in Server.app
    c) turn off TimeMachine in Server.app
    d) now you can edit the files, the easiest is with Xcode, so you may want to install that first
    e) for each sharpoint you made in a) there will be a corresponding .plist file in the location indicated, these are the files that need to be edited.
    f) for each of these files
         1) the item0 string property in the timeMachineBackup array must be switched from 0 to 1
         2) a new key of type array with the name timeMachineBackupUUID must be created
         3) in the newly created array an item of type string must be placed with the value of a UUID, which can be created with the shell command uuidgen
    g) make sure all the edited plist files are saved
    h) turn on TimeMachine in the Server.app again
    If all went well, you now should be able to go to one of your networked client computers and see all the time machine share points just created as options for being a time machine target.
    Anyway, if you go that route: be careful, don't blame me if you muck things up...

  • How do I make Lion Server support more than one Time Machine disk?

    Under Snow Leopard Server, I had two disks set up for Time Machine backups. This came about as I'm running a Mac Mini with the 500 GB internal drives which turned out to be insufficient for one of the connected Macs which uses a terabyte drive. I then added an external 6 TB drive and made it a Time Machine destination too. Worked beautifully. When I upgraded to Lion Server the external large drive was no longer available for backups and the interface for configuration within Server only allows for one drive to be in use at a time. Any suggestions (short on reverting to Snow Leopard) as to how to re-enable having both drives available for networked Time Machine access?
    Thanks!

    Hi Adam,
    Before I even realised that the Server app had a setting for TM, I just configured TM backups on my (SL) clients as I had done in SL.
    I shared the drive(s) on the server I wanted to use.
    For each client, I mounted the appropriate shared drive containing its sparseimage file, then set TM on the client to use that drive.
    Then I unmounted the shared drive and started TM.
    It mounted the remote drive (without displaying it in Finder) and opened the sparseimage, showing the "Time Machine Backups" volume on the desktop.
    So you could use any drive attached to the server to backup any client.
    It worked fine for me.
    In the end, I changed my clients to use the (single) shared "Backups" volume which Server.app creates because I can fit all my stuff on one drive.

  • Running more than one time machine back up drive

    I have a back up drive assigned as my offices time machine back up drive.
    I need to set up an off site back up drive too. I know that time machine will only allow a connection to one back up destination at once.
    What problems could i encounter if i set up a off site drive as another time machine drive, disconnect on site drive and connect the off site drive to back up.
    Thanks

    That will work just fine, other than the hassle of having to tell Time Machine every time you swap.
    Give the drives at least slightly different names (that's for you; Time Machine knows they're different).
    Each set of backups will be complete and independent. When you do a backup to either one, it will contain all the changes you've made since the last backup +*to that drive.+*
    The first backup after a swap may take a bit longer than usual, as there may be more changes to "catch up" with, but otherwise there should be no troubles.

  • More than one Time Machine drive

    I'm about to upgrade to a Mac Book Pro at work, which will be my first use of Leopard on a work computer. (My Aluminum Powerbook at work sits at 10.4.11 right now.) I do have a Mac mini running Leopard at home, so I'm familiar with Time Machine. With my work computer, currently I maintain two Retrospect incremental back-up files and toggle between them. I started doing that after a Retrospect back-up file got corrupted and I no longer had any file history. With the new system, I'd like to set up two time machine drives. One would stay in my office and would be the main time machine drive. The other would be portable, and would help me keep my work backed up when I am on extended travel. I would also like to back up to the second drive at some regular interval (say weekly) when I am not traveling to keep it fairly current. Will Time Machine handle such toggling of backup drive gracefully? When I switch back to the main Time Machine drive after backing up the the portable drive, will incremental backups resume on the main drive, or will it start a full backup again?
    thanks!

    Nope. I do not use TM as I find it to be very unreliable and poorly suited to anything other than basic backup for inexperienced users. I use other backup applications that do scheduled backups to my backup drives. I would never try to have multiple backups on a single drive as it is unsafe. If the drive were to fail or become corrupted then both backups are lost. It's not a good backup strategy in my opinion. For backup I recommend:
    Backup Software Recommendations
    My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
    The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
    Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
    Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.

  • How do I create more space on Time Machine backup disk?

    How do I create more space on Time Machine backup disk?

    since time machine in Snow Leopard stops backing up when there's no more space on the disk,
    That is has not been my experience, and does not appear to be agree with this Time Machine documentation:
    Backup drive fills up
    As your backup drive begins to fill up to its capacity, Time Machine intelligently deletes the oldest backups to make room for newer ones (and will alert you if the "Notify after old backups are deleted" option is selected in Time Machine preferences).

  • How to deploy a Webapplication on WAS more than one times on same server?

    Hi all,
    I 've a special problem:
    In our web-app (some DC's) also stored propertie-Files. Now we would to deploy this application more than one times at same server using different WebContentRoots. (f.e. http://server/app1 and http://server/app2 a.s.o.)
    We know, that we must create different EAR-Projects and refer the web-Module and configure the application.
    But in the second application there it's recommended to change some properties.
    How we can handle this in JDI without copy the web-application?
    I hope my question can be understood.

    Using Netweaver + WAS 6.40 2004 SP 13

    Hi Sven,
    as I'm new to NWDI, I cannot give you a 100 percent, field-tested solution. But have you already thought about using the Configuration-Adapter?
    If you can change the source of your web-app, you could maintain the data formerly stored in property files using the configuration adapter of visual administrator. The SC <a href="http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/45/e7e14b517b42788a1c166f9f32455e/content.htm">configuration</a> allows you to access this data.
    With this approach you can stick to one web-application and do the configuration work separately for each deployed application.

  • Block create type of operation more than one time

    Hello SAP CRM Experts!
    I have a question.
    How do I get block the user create a type of operation more than one time?
    For example, I have a kind of opportunity that can be created only once for each client. How can I do this using the customizing?
    Best Regards!
    Tks!

    Hi,
    you could only limit the assigned internal number range to one object, which would allow only one document to be saved. The next creation would then fail since there is no number available.
    This is the only solution I can think of, otherwise you need to program a BADI.

  • Execute more than one times external command of OS Windows NT

    Hi all,
            I have to execute more than one times from an ABAP program an exernal command of Operating system windows NT . In order to reach this goal I found the standard program RSBDCOS0 and it works very well if you execute it one time.  Unfortunately I have to execute this external command more than one times. Is there any soluiton?
    thank to all
                        Gino Bonfiglioli

    Well why are you using this report RSBDCOS0 to execute external commands?
    Because SAP provides certain function modules that can be used to call operating system commands; so you can use these functions to do your task.
    Just check the following link
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw2004s/helpdata/en/fa/0971e1543b11d1898e0000e8322d00/frameset.htm
    As you mentioned that you need to execute multiple times, you can easily put the call to function module inside a loop or do/enddo structure. for example consider the following
    do 3 times.
    call function 'SXPG_COMMAND_EXECUTE'
          exporting
               commandname                   = 'Put operating system command here'

               parameters_too_long           = 3
               security_risk                 = 4
               wrong_check_call_interface    = 5
               program_start_error           = 6
               program_termination_error     = 7
               x_error                       = 8
               parameter_expected            = 9
               too_many_parameters           = 10
               illegal_command               = 11
               wrong_asynchronous_parameters = 12
               cant_enq_tbtco_entry          = 13
               jobcount_generation_error     = 14

  • Unable to recover Mavericks via Time Machine on iMac (2011). I have one Time Machine backup from this week On new Time Capsule. I already attempted safe boot and NPRAM reset. Hard drive and permissions verified as ok.

    Some more history - I'm not too techie so added everything in I thought might be significant!
    - Installed Mavericks on iMac in October 2013
    - experienced regular low memory issues - used Memory Clean app as a workaround
    - last week decided to upgrade installed memory from 4gb to 16gb. Faster loading but still running out of memory - just takes longer to do so.
    - also last week purchased 2gb Time Capsule (to back up 660gb on 1TB drive)
    - one successful Time Machine backup completed last weekend.
    - I decided to try and clear some space, tidy my folders, old music files,  delete duplicates etc (Not system files)
    - then tried out 'time machine restore' just to test it out. Deleted files and folders recovered ok using Time Machine menu (the one that looks like outta space)
    - yesterday, Avast Anti-Virus flagged virus detected (sorry, I didn't manage to capture details) and quarantined file, but I couldn't get any windows to respond so forced Mac to shutdown.
    - attempted regular reboot , system hanging on white/ apple symbol screen.
    -  attempted Safe reboot - reboot stalls at mess 'BootCacheControl: unable to open /var/db/BootCache.playlist no such file or directory.
    (I don't know if this is significant)
    - attempt NPRAM reset, reboot hanging at Apple symbol still
    - attempted reboot into Disk Utility. HD drive verified ok. Permissions checked and Safari permissions fixed (only)
    - finally attempting restore from Time Machine Backup via Disk Utility. Stalls at 'select a backup source'. Menu is 'searching for Time Machine Backup....'
    Nothing is listed, after a few mins machine just goes to sleep.
    My Time Capsule and networks are all switched on. No idea what to try next!

    Most of the problems like this that people report on this forum are due to bad "utilities" like Memory Clean and Avast.
    Your Mac probably didn't have a virus. There has never been an OSX virus "in the wild". Third party antivirus software is of very dubious utility on Macs. Macs are not PCs. OSX has anti-malware protection built into it already.
    Do you have any other third party "utilities" on your Mac, such as CleanMyMac or MacKeeper?
    Is the RAM you installed the recommended type of RAM for your Mac?
    Take a look at this page: Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
    But your OS may be damaged beyond repair, or beyond what disk utility is able to repair.
    In that case you have a few options:
    There is a small chance that a (reputable) third part utility like Techtool Pro 7  may be able to fix your OS.
    Try to boot into single user mode (restart, hold down ⌘S until you see a black screen with white text) and repair your hard drive. Here's a reference with directions: Repair Your Hard Disk in Single User Mode | Everything Macintosh
    bite the bullet, boot into the recovery partition or internet recovery, and erase your HD, reinstall Mavericks from scratch, and start over. Your documents are probably still on your Time Machine Backup. I wouldn't reinstall the documents via a migration- you don't want to reinstall bad system files along with your documents- but you could copy them one by one back to your internal HD. And most importantly- don't reinstall any third party "utilites" like Memory Clean or Avast (or any other third-party antivirus software, for that matter).

  • More on the Time Machine backup folder issue

    R C-R has a couple recent posts related to identifying the volume on which the current backup folder for Time Machine is located -- so other volumes can be safely unmounted. He developed a script that may be the best of all possible approaches and has asked forum members to test it in "Does this script work for you? (10.5 users only)". To date the responses have been positive.
    I don't use 10.5 but figure that eventually I might. After R C-R's first post I wondered if the most recently modified backup folder might actually be the one he is looking for. Short of forcing Time Machine to do a backup just before running a script (I don't know how), there's no way (for me) to know whether the most recently modified backup folder is of any significance. But I had started fooling around with code to identify that folder and now have a script that seems to work nicely on a 10.4 mock-up of the Time Machine save scheme (or at least I think it is a mock-up). Of course, I find myself without a way to really test it.
    SO: if anyone with 10.5 wants to give it a whirl, the questions are:
    1) Does it run on 10.5?
    2) Does it appear to return the name of the volume containing the most recently modified TM backup folder?
    and
    3) Is there any correlation between the volume name it returns and the result of R C-R's test script? (I won't be surprised if there isn't)
    (BTW, through my own stupidity I encountered a number-comparison problem while writing the code, but other forum members quickly got me straightened out.)

    Note: this is not a competition -- I'm just curious.

    Hello osimp,
    To distinguish two volumes with same name in plain AppleScript (without denpending upon particular applications such as 'Finder' or 'System Events'), I think you can use either POSIX file object or alias object.
    if I'm not mistaken, POSIX file object has typeFileURL data, which contains mount point information. And alias object contains fertile information to track file system object dynamically not only by its path. (In order to create new alias objects for volumes with the same name, however, you'd have to distinguish them by other means, such as by using POSIX file object.)
    E.g.
    If you have two volumes named "Mac HD" and their mount points are:
    /Volumes/Mac HD
    /Volumes/Mac HD 1
    I think you can distinguish them by:
    set f1 to "/Volumes/Mac HD" as POSIX file
    set f2 to "/Volumes/Mac HD 1" as POSIX file
    or:
    set a1 to "/Volumes/Mac HD" as POSIX file as alias
    set a2 to "/Volumes/Mac HD 1" as POSIX file as alias
    and these references can be used such as:
    set d1 to modification date of (info for f1)
    set d2 to modification date of (info for f2)
    or:
    tell application "Finder"
    set d1a to modification date of a1
    set d2a to modification date of a2
    end tell
    After all, you might write a script as follows:
    --SCRIPT
    set CN_ to computer name of (system info)
    set IntList to {}
    set VtrueList to {}
    set curDate to current date (* get curDate, time origin, once *)
    set Vlist to paragraphs of (do shell script "ls /Volumes")
    repeat with v_ from 1 to count Vlist
    set VolName_ to item v_ of Vlist
    try
    set BkDB_ to ("/Volumes/" & VolName_ & "/Backups.backupdb")
    set SF_ to paragraphs of (do shell script "ls " & quoted form of BkDB_)
    (* get SF_ as string list in order to do exact comparison between each string and CN_ *)
    if SF_ contains CN_ then
    set pf to (BkDB_ & "/" & CN_) as POSIX file
    (* get pf as POSIX file in order to distinguish volumes by mount point. *)
    set end of VtrueList to VolName_ -- mount point name
    set end of IntList to curDate - (modification date of (info for pf))
    end if
    end try
    end repeat
    set CI_ to count IntList
    set MinInt_ to item 1 of IntList
    repeat with i_ from 2 to CI_
    set NextInt_ to item i_ of IntList
    if MinInt_ > NextInt_ then set MinInt_ to NextInt_
    end repeat
