More VRAM in 20"?

I consider buying a iMac C2D 20", which for now will be expanded with 2 GB of RAM, 500 GB HD and a 2.33 GHz processor. However, I wonder if it's useful to upgrade the video card to 256 MB VRAM (vs. 128).
I am not a gamer, but maybe, as the time passes by, OSes will ask more VRAM to run, or will in thus cases the performance be limited by the ATi card, and not by the VRAM?
So: is it useful to add more VRAM in my situation?

I would recommend getting 2gigs of RAM and upgrading the VRAM to 256MB. Those two are the ones that you will notice most in performance. The VRAM will come in handy if you ever decide to do anything with iMovie, Final Cut, or anything video intensive -- including games or DVD watching. If you never will then don't. But it's only a $75 upgrade.
The CPU upgrade is neglible -- you won't notice a difference. The HD can be upgraded any time and much cheaper with external Firewire or USB2 drives. If I were you -- and I was yesterday -- I would save the money on the CPU and hard drive upgrades. Those are the two most expensive and least noticeable upgrades.
I ordered mine yesterday, and it arrived today (for an extra $46). Amazing.

I've learned  by reading other topics that I can't upgrade my graphics card on my Macbook Pro because it's soldered into the motherboard or somthing like that, but please tell me if there is any way to get more video ram by chaning some setting or upgrading something else. I'd also like to know why I only have 256MB of VRAM when I have 8GB of RAM, since I have 8GB of RAM I thought I was supposed to have 560mb of VRAM...
    So the two questions are...
Is there any way to upgrade my VRAM, so that I can play games on steam?
Why do I only have 256MB VRAM when I have 8GB total RAM?
    Other Info:
    I have a quad core i7 Processor.
My graphcics card is the AMD Radeon HD 6490M.
I am also trying to play games on my BOOTCAMPed side of my mac, or my Windows 7 Professional side.
THANK YOU SO MUCH IF YOU CAN REPLY,

The only two items that a user can change on a MBP are the RAM and HDD (Retinas not included).  You have what the unit came with and the only way you will be able to change that is to purchase a MBP with superior graphics
If you are very much into gaming, the I suggest A PC.  They are far superior for that type of application to a MBP.
    Ciao.

  • Hi, I've been using the 3D function in PS, upgraded to CC2104 and it was disabled (need more VRAM). I then reinstalled CS6 and was able to use it for a day and now, today, I am getting the same message I got with PS CC2014 saying my VRAM is too low again.

Hi, I've been using the 3D function in PS, upgraded to CC2104 and it was disabled (need more VRAM). I then reinstalled CS6 and was able to use it for a day and now, today, I am getting the same message I got with PS CC2014 saying my VRAM is too low again. I'm in the middle of a project that needs to go live tomorrow. HELP!!! Please.

Photoshop requires 512 Meg of VRAM or more to use the 3D features - that's been the same for version 14 (CC) and now 15 (CC 2014). Check Help->System Info to see how much your card says it has.

  • Compressor on a Xserve / Need more VRAM

So here is the issue, I am running Compressor 3.5.3. I currently have three computers in a cluster using qmaster. I am trying to add an Xserve into the mix. When I attempt to install compressor on the Xserve it throws me an error saying I don't have enough VRAM. Full error Message; "Final Cut Studio Install recommends a screen resolution of 1280x800; this system currently has a screen resolution of 1024x768. Final Cut Studio Installer requires that your system have 128 MB of VRAM; this system has only 64 MB of VRAM." I have about 500 GB of hard drive space. If anyone could help me that would be great.

The Final Cut Studio installer is looking for active VRAM when it installs. To activate VRAM, a display needs to be connected.
I ran into a similar issue when trying to install Compressor/QMaster on a couple of MacMini servers via Remote Desktop. Even though I could connect and operate the computer, I still needed to connect a display to activate its VRAM in order for the installer to install correctly.

  • I need more vram

I have some games for my mac, but they are lagging.  I have done some tests with activity monitor, and my RAM and my CPU are not the issues.  I went to the support for the game, and it told me that my mac didn't have enough vram.  I know I cannot change my graphics card because it is soldered to the logic board, so is there some way I can do a target disk type thing where I have external VRAM?
    Thanks in advance,

  • NVidia 8600M GT more RAM?

I have a MacBook Pro (~2008) 2.4GHz with 4GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM and the nVidia 8600M GT video chip with 256MB vRAM. I am working with Adobe Photoshop CS6 and continually get a message that my 3D capabilities are disabled due to lack of vRAM available (need 512MB min) ...
Question: Is there a way to manaually provision more RAM to the video card to up it to 512 MB?
    Thanks.

The NVIDIA GeForce 8600M is a dedicated graphic card, so you can't modify its VRAM because it's not being shared with your main memory. In Macs with integrated cards, you can add more VRAM by installing more RAM. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3246

  • 128mb vs 256mb vram?

Well, our 9 month old 2.0 CD failed for the 3rd time and it's being replaced by the newer 2.16 C2D. We're getting a faster cpu but we're losing some mem on the video card. How much will that affect things (iMovie rendering, games on Bootcamp)?

    from TweakGuides.com :
    The VRAM Stores the Data
The data entering the graphics card is now stored on the card's own local memory, called Video RAM (VRAM), just two chips of which are circled in red above. These onboard VRAM chips provide a similar service to that of regular system RAM on your motherboard; a temporary storage area designed to help speed up calculations by the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) - circled in yellow above. Basically as you can see, your graphics card is almost like a miniature PC within itself, with its own CPU (GPU), RAM (VRAM) and motherboard (PCB), and operates in much the same way. VRAM in particular not only serves as storage point for data to be calculated for rendering, it also holds completed images (frames) ready for sending to your monitor - see Step 8 further below for details.
This is the reason why the amount of VRAM is increasingly becoming larger and more important on modern graphics cards. The more information that can be held onboard the graphics card's VRAM, the more quickly the GPU can process data and not have to pause to allow more data to be loaded up into VRAM. For example, games with high resolution textures require more VRAM space. When space runs out in VRAM, existing unused textures have to be switched out and new ones loaded up from your hard drive and/or system RAM into the VRAM. This slight pause which results is commonly referred to as hitching (when data loads into VRAM) or stuttering (when data loads up from the hard drive first), and is most noticeable when you enter new areas or see new objects during a game. Your graphics card literally pauses to wait for new data to be loaded for display before continuing.
Performance Tip: This step highlights the importance of having more VRAM on your graphics card. If running a game on a card with less VRAM, you must lower your texture settings and/or resolution, otherwise you will get more hitching/stuttering as data is constantly swapped into and out of the VRAM. This is particularly true if you have a slower hard drive and less system RAM as well. Note further that cooling the VRAM properly is also essential, as almost all cases of noticeable graphical glitches (also called 'Artifacts'), and many crashes and lockups, are due to overheating VRAM. Remember that the temperature sensor on your graphics card is not located on the VRAM - it is on or close to the GPU; so your VRAM can often run much hotter.

  • After Effects not using all my VRAM?

So, I've just upgraded my GTX 460 SE to a GTX 770 4GB and cut my 81 minute render time on one project down to 23 minutes which is awesome, but I have an issue where AE CS5.5 isn't allowing me to use more than 800MB of VRAM regardles of how many models I'm using. A single 300k poly model takes me to 700MB (Using Element 3D plugin). Adding 20 more models ranging from 20k to 400k doesn't change my VRAM usage at all. It just stays around 700MB.
Do I have to change some setting to get After Effects to see that I have more VRAM that can be used to store more models? I'm not asking for it to completely fill all 4GB, but I was expecting it to at least take advantage of 2 to 3GB. My old 1GB card would fill up to 900MB as I boosted the number of models and would scale down as I removed models. Thanks in advance for any help!
    System specs:
    i7-3930k OC'd to 4.5GHz
    GTX 770 4GB GPU
    16GB 1866 RAM (upgrading to 48GB soon)
SSD for OS and programs only (no games)
    SSD for scratch and media
HDD for audio and lower res media
    Dual 23" 1080 monitors (HP 23xi)

Alright, so I've done some more tests and I found out that I had to set the fast previews to Adaptive Resolution -- Open GL Off. Now my GPU stores up to exactly 2GB (the value I set my texture memory to). So it looks like if I can set my texture memory higher I'll also be able to take a greater advantage of my GPU. However, After Effects CS5.5 won't let me increase the texture memory any higher than 2000MB. Is there a workaround for this or is After Effects just not capable of using more than 2GB of VRAM?
Edit: Did some more tests. For some reason 2GB seems to be the limit for 1080 video, but bumping up to a 4K comp got me to 4GB very quickly. So it looks like the high quality 3D models I was adding didn't take up as much VRAM as I thought they would. Even better than that is after changing the fast preview to Adaptive Resolution I can now have 1000 low to medium poly count models and move around the scene in real time, no lag at all. Still not sure why having Open GL on causes things to slow down so much though. Maybe because Element 3D uses their own Open GL renderer and the After Effects Open GL renderer starts to conflict? No idea, either way I'm far more than satisfied with my findings.
Edit 2: Ran some tests with a 4k aircraft model in a 1080 comp. It takes about 1.5GB of VRAM to load it, but once I run a RAM preview it takes up 3.5GB. Looks like it all depends on the models you use in your projects. If you aren't using crazy high res/polycount models then you'll be fine with 3GB, or maybe even 2GB of VRAM, but as soon as you start using high res models, especially high res models of very large/complicated models like large planes, people, cars, etc. then more VRAM definitely makes a difference. I hope this helps someone else down the road!

  • Is it possible to upgrade VRAM?

    hi,
I've purchased my current eMac about 1.5 years ago. It has 512 MB RAM and 32 MB VRAM, eMac G4 1.25 Ghz..
To be able to run a certain program at acceptable settings, i'd like to have more VRAM, let's say 128MB. Now, is there a way to do that? Would I have to send in my mac to apple and let exchange something? can a local store do that? what would it cost?
    thx in advance
    eMac G4 1.25 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   512 MB RAM, 32MB VRAM

If you prefer the eMac form factor, there were only two eMac models with more vRAM as the tech specs state:
    http://support.apple.com/specs/emac/eMac_2005.html
    M99834 and M9835.
Both supported 63 MB DDR VRAM.
As for replacing the components of an eMac, I've never heard of a program Apple has to do that. There are used and refurbished Mac shops that will do trades, some of them are on my FAQ:
    http://www.macmaps.com/usedrefurbished.html
And there are newer Macs out there with more VRAM. I would recommend you go for the newer Macs.

  • Game gurus: Usage of VRAM

    Hi!
I have the most recent model of the 17" MacBook Pro and have noticed that the VRAM has been doubled since the previous generation. One person claimed that more VRAM only had an impact on fast-paced action games. Could "Call of duty 4" fit that category? And if so, I´ve noticed that games often require no more than 64 MB VRAM. I´ve also noticed that a high end graphics card for the Mac Pro has 1,5 GB VRAM. Is all this huge amount of VRAM actually bringing more performance to the computer or does it only raise the value? A friend said it had no impact on gaming, which of course makes me a bit confused about the point of putting 512 MB of it in a laptop.
Please share your thoughts regarding this!

Heh, 'requires' is code for 'this is the base minimum you have to have to even start the thing'.
The MacBook Pro and Mac Pro's are fine in the vram area.
In OS X vram also is used for what you see on the screen, like windows and things, so again, most of the 'Pro' labeled mac will be fine.

  • Graphics Card = More Pixels????

    Hi there,
Does the graphics cars affect the pixels in the screen? By this i mean, if i get a higher graphics card, will the picture on the screen be clearer, and less pixellated?
    Cheers
    23rd Child

A higher-end graphics card means your mac's processor will be free up to do what it does basically, processing the applications running instead of also "minding" what is to display on the screen, this is "lay man" explaining... especially if you have graphics-intensive program running like 3D software or games.
Example if you have a "low-end" or basic graphics card, and if you have multiple apps running, and when you say for example run iTunes and have the Visualizer turn on, you will notice the graphics on the Visualizer will not run as smooth, as when ONLY iTunes is running; But if you have a "higher end" graphics card with more VRam, that may not be the case.
    Cheers

  • Photoshop CC 2014 acts slugish

ever since the new updates and me installing windows 8.1 64bit version OS photoshop CC 2014 has been slugish !
when using mouse to nav" through menus and loading blank page of size 300px x 300 px or size 4320 px x 6480 px.
rendering slow and 70% of the time when using wacom cintiq 13HD pen display drawing with brush some times lags and not show the lines I am drawing right off.
I do have some custom shapes installed a lot really.
and styles and some brushes and Gradients of many different colors and shades.
the brushes I don't normal keep installed unless working on the same subject type design I was working on the day before.
but mostly uninstall them when starting a new project.
I also noticed for some time now since the new releases of the new product of photoshop there is no more PSD preview when opening up files window to view your saved files.
and I for one want that back in the the program.
if I am correct I read most of the forums on here in the past and 100% of the users of photoshop wants that back.
cause using their other means to search for files and open them with is a issue and can't view them as good.
and the icons for them are too small.
I know as a photoshop user I can't see that well to see tiny icons like that in their bridge program.
and I had that on the largest settings to view.
at least the old PSD previewer method we could see it a lot better by our own windows size of a icons.
their bridge preview does not go that large and the widow there is not that great either for viewing !
    New issue update:
just tried to convert 2 files on photoshop and it took a long time to do.
and then I couldn't convert to raster image at all.
there was no warning or error messages at all !!
    Personal Note:
I think adobe is messing up badly and their not doing their job right for programming their messing up more and more every time they add something new to the photoshop program and its updates.
and when they take something away that was wanted and needed mostly that all users want to keep they ended up messing up the code of their software with loads more errors and issues.
and you can't tell me photoshop any version of their software is not a memory hog !
when it does stress alot memory on your video card and needs to use it all up, or it becomes slow and some times freezes.
you can have a 4gb video card to a 1T + video card and it will still do the same thing.
theres a alot of issue there with that.
and I seen and read about loads of users on this forums board and others complain about.
and even most of them sent in emails to their support to complain about it and they still do nothing to fix that issue.!
and if photoshop is not a memory hog on the video cards ? how come Gimp and Sketchbook pro and manga studio all work flawlessly and smooth as hell without using as much video card memory as photoshop does ?
and their designed to use less and still work smoothly.
and manga studio 5 they have stability program for your brushes to help out with more straight lines and curves and circles and stuff  and photoshop does not ?
and that can be adjust in the brushes software to have full 100% to 0%...
and my pc I custom built my self has more power then most brand name desktop pcs on the market for a cheaper price too, cause in most cases with brand name pcs your paying more for the brand name then whats in the product !!!
so my pc has AMD CPU 8 cores 5.19ghz open all 8 cores.
32 GB ram and 2gb Radeon R9 XFX 270X video card for now.
maine hard drive 512Gb SSD samsung and 2nd SSD 128GB samsung 3rd Western digital 2TB HDD.
Main monitor is ACER 10 point touch screen.
Art: using wacom cintiq 13HD pen display.
all drivers for OS and photoshop and wacom devices up to date.
so any advice would be good please ?

my cintiq 13HD is not companion Tablet pc.
my cintiq 13HD is just the pen display !
see the difference there tablet pc vs pen display.
all it is, is a 13" HD monitor display with wacoms tech, to draw on it.
its not a stand alone tablet pc / wacom pen device.
so the wacom cintiq 13HD pen display monitor will not slow down or effect the programs process speeds at all.
its the same as a regular HD lcd monitor just smaller.
    this my wacom cintiq 13HD pen/display http://www.wacom.com/en-us/products/pen-displays/cintiq-13-hd
this wacom cintiq 13HD companion tablet/ped display pc Cintiq Companion 2 | Wacom
they didn't have the first wacom cintiq 13HD companion tablet on the website anymore so this the only link I have for it.
but any way if I had the money to spend out on the wacom cintiq 13HD companion tablet pc I would gotten it.
and used it without attaching it to another pc.
but the reason I didnt get one right off, is cause it does not have the all the feature for a tablet I would like to have.
    1. WiFi + 3G or 4G LTE.
    2. need more USB ports at least 1 more.
    3. large SSD drive
    4. more physical ram then 4GB.
    5. more processor power then dual core if its dual core. not sure what type they got.
but most tablets is dual core.
    6. higher memory for video card processor.
specially for the money your paying for it..rofl
cause I know your paying out more bucks for the brand name then you are for the parts in stalled in it.
I custom built desktop pcs for a long while now since 1995. ect.
and puting a desktop pc together cost less then having to buy a brand name one with less physical ram and video card ram and less SSD and HDD drive space.
and you get more out of it and cheaper then from retail brand name pc.
you be able to get and put in more physical ram and install a large SSD drive or HDD drive for cheaper money and even a better video card with more vram and also faster cpu processor speed then brand would have, for even lesser money.
to be honest I use photoshop for my business I do t-shirt and mousepad designs ect... for as a hobby on cafepress.com and zazzle.com and spreadhsirt.com and designsbyhumans.com ect.
and I also do themed and art designs for WB,inc.
and lot of the effects I do for my business and for WB are from and on photoshop for brushes and lighting effects and stuff.
and with photoshop cc 2014 working so crappy lately like it has been it's starting to piss me off.
and I am about to file a complaint with the attorney generals office cause of it.
cause I am paying for the product I need for work and stuff and their not doing anything to fix it.!!!
I complain to them about in live chat and they did nothing !
so next step was here the forums board and if nothing here for answers other then the basics.,
then I file my complaint and take court action.!
and I will be post about getting other customers to follow and sign up to join the court case.
and this forums board wow is it slow.
and I have a 50+ mbps speed my speed is good from maine to ca and lond area networks.

  • [T410] discrete gfx - Problem with Video Card and Windows Aero -anyone using 4Gb memory modules?

    [3/3/2010 Update]
There's a issue of using 4Gb sticks on T410 currently that results in video output artifacts and aero interface problems when using Lenovo supplied drivers v8.16.11.8825. I think I can call it confirmed (Three people including me face this issue).
Possible workaround is to install modified EliteBook 8440p video driver (read along this thread) comes with a BIG drawback of not being able to change brightness level within Windows 7. To sweeten it a little bit - you can set luminance level at POST screen, when computer boots up.
    [Original Message]
Encountered strange behavoir of my T410.
I have a T410 with 256Mb of Video Memory and 1440x900 display, a T61 with 128Mb of Video Memory and 1400x1050 dsplay and external monitor HP w2338h with 1920x1080 resolution.
If I connect external monitor to my T410 and launch Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 - image blinks and comes back with Aero disabled. Looking through event logs reveals the lack of memory. Entry information can be found further.
Now If I do the same with my old Thinkpad T61, connect the same monitor using the same cable - I can open as many Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 instances I like (tried 5) and nothing blinks and Aero stays enabled.
Actually I find ridiculous, a notebook with more VRAM cannot archive the same performance as notebooks with less.
Does anyone know what path should I pursue to solve this issue?
UPDATE: Simply running multiple instances of Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 without external monitor causes Aero disabled as well.

This must be buggy drivers, on Lenovo download site is just the one and the only initial driver for T410 graphics card.
What software were you actively using when this error occured?

  • New system for CS5.5? Some advice please?

Hi- I am getting a new system built specifically to work with Production Premium CS5.5.
I'm afraid I know next to nothing about hardware!
These are some specs that the guys in the shop said would work?
Do you have any comments- will it work? Any better suggestions?
    Many thanks

There are several major problems with that build:
    1) The two WD Green hard drives are too slow for video editing. They spin at only 5400 RPM, not 7200 RPM.
    2) The i7-950 and X58 combo is about to become obsolesced by the new LGA 2011 Sandy Bridge-E platform with the X79 chipset.
    3) Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.x still does not support OpenCL GPU acceleration at all. In fact, the GPU accelerated mode requires an Nvidia CUDA GPU with 896MB or more VRAM in order to even work at all. As a result, the ATi GPU-equipped systems will run CS5.x only in software-only MPE mode, which is much, much slower than the GPU accelerated mode. In other words, the HD 6770 will be equally as slow as integrated motherboard graphics (as far as performance in CS5.x is concerned).
    4) Windows 7 Home Premium will not see anywhere near the full 24GB of RAM. In fact, that OS is capped at 16GB of RAM total. You will need Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate in order to use more than 16GB of RAM.
    5) That 600W PSU is nowhere near powerful enough to run a video editing system of this class. In fact, that OCZ PSU is not even that good quality-wise. You will need a reallty good quality 750W to 850W 80-Plus Gold rated PSU.
In other words, the guys in the shop know little to nothing about the stuff that they sell.

  • DVI to Component video w/ MacBook Pro and NVIDIA GeForce 8600M card...

I just got a new MacBook Pro with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M video card. On the NVIDIA website for the card, it states:
"Integrated HDTV encoder provides analog TV-output (Component/Composite/S-Video) up to 1080i/1080p resolution".
I have a Sony HDTV that only has component video (Y Pr Pb) inputs (the red/green/blue inputs). It is capable of HD up to 1080i.
If the NVIDIA card does output an analog TV (Component) signal, it should work. However, when I went to the place that sells the DVI-to-Component adapter, I got some bad news:
    See it here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000E8V0YI/ref=pdluc_sbs_0202
I wrote a question to the Sewell folks about this product and asked this:
Will this work with the dual link DVI-I port on my macbook pro? Graphics card info: Nvidia 8600 GT 256MB of GDDR3 memory Here is the link to the card's site: http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_8600.html
    They answered:
Unfortunately this will not work. While the GPU may support the function, the Mac Version of the cards do not implement the component signal.
I think they are still thinking about the older MacBooks that use the ATI chipset and don't know about the new NVIDIA cards.
Is component really not implemented in the new MacBook Pros?
I have the 17" model that has more VRAM than the 15" and I got the HD screen upgrade.
Does anyone know any solution that will work with the MacBook Pro with the NVIDIA chipset? As I said, I'm trying to output an HD signal from the DVI port on the MacBook Pro to component video input on my HD television.
    Thanks for the help.

Sorry, the website for the Sewell adapter is here:
