More ZPM in ZCM questions--intended behavior?

Perhaps I am doing something wrong or not looking in the correct spot.
If I use ZPM in ZCM, there seems to be some deficiencies:
a) Refresh of patch status. Meaning I go into Patch Management, click on a patch and select Actions -> Update Cache. I get the icon to change animation but it NEVER changes status unless you manually refresh the web browser. I do not believe that ZPM 6.4.x (Novell branded product) behaves this way. I think the ZPM 6.4.x will refresh the page automatically for you so you know when it's done downloading.
b) Patch deployment status - you can't really tell what's going on with the devices. In ZPM 6.4.x I can go into devices and I see animations as to what the machine status is (is it on, is it doing a DAU, is it deploying a patch). I don't seem to be able to find any of this information in ZCM (meaning I can't just look at the device icon and see what it's doing, I have to go into the patches tab or something to see if it got deployed, but I don't know what the "live" status of the machine is).
c) Patch Deploys in general - I am pretty sure I can go into ZPM 6.4.x and find my deployment tab and see what I chose to deploy, when, and to which machines. I don't seem to be able to find this in ZCM. I do see something like "deploy on some heinous formatted date/time" but that's it. I have to scrounge around inside the deploy to the actions section and even then it doesn't reall show me in a nice format which machines it was deployed to, let alone the status of the machines.
Again, I could be looking in the wrong spot, or perhaps it's not there.

In response here we've gone through great efforts to make the integration consistent with ZCM behavior.
a) Only a couple of pages do auto refresh of status in ZCM. This is to allow for the greatest performance. ZPM is consistent with the rest of the ZCM behavior such as bundle status and policy status. By refreshing the page status updates.
b) Since all deployments are done using the bundle system in ZCM you can track all status of ZPM deployments by looking at the Bundle status. There is a ZPM Assignment bundle created for each deployment. It should have status of deliveries and errors if you look at it.
c) You should be able to go to the ZPM Assignment bundle and look at the Install Action Set. It will show you which patches are being deployed.

The question I need answered is ( and not able to find the answer on any of you help pages).....
Do the following have free copyright to publish on facebook and U Tube?
1.Garage band sounds?
2.Slide show...Sample music and Theme music?
3.iMovie...iMovie sounds and iLife sounds ie.Medal Ceremony and Memorial etc?
I note one can publish to shared net places directly from iMovie so one assumes these are copyright free for non-profit making and non-comercial use.
It is impossible to contact apple direct. No email address. We put our selves at risk without this knowledge and like applemac, facebook will not communicate direct. Will applemac please take responsibility for copyright/the above that they are all too willing to sell to us but not support us with that knowledge.
I have Mac OS X Snow Leopard version 10.6.2 (2009 bought in 2010)

Thank you Klaus1.The large font, I copied and pasted from my mail box.I'm visually impaired...not to a huge degree but it helps to use the large font.I believe you are right about the copyright on the imac stuff but if facebook decide otherwise, you have to reply electronically to their challenge. If you can't provide a reference directly from the copyright owner then they remove the video.I believe this is a programmed response and no human is involved which now makes it impossible for me to get my video uploading restored. They detect added soundtrack automatically and then challenge. There are many others in the same boat and facebook will not communicate. They have various discussion sites on which I have left messages including Mark Zuckerbergs own facebook but I don't think anyone from facebook ever reads them.I intend to start a second facebook which I can use purely to get my videos uploaded as a lot of my friends enjoy them BUT don't want fall foul of their programming again. If only iMac would put something on the net to this effect.I think it is so unfair that with modern technology it is impossible to contact these large conglomerates personally and receive an email response.I tried emailing [email protected] but I got a failure notice. If you have any ideas on how to get verification from apple direct, I would be very grateful.Thank You.

• Re: More specific to two questions

Hi everybody,
I have been watching this debate with interest. I encountered similar
situation and realised that even after calling the method
ReleaseDistReference on DistObjectMgr, the object is live ( Probably
some time before garbage collection kicks in) and can be binded using
ObjectLocationManager.BindObject() method. This caused some problems to
us. This object is not invalidated for further use. Can somebody from
Forte answer this ?

Hi, Boris
Your helps are really appreciated!
I've already read this part and other relevant materials of Forte
document.
So far, what I understand is if an object is anchored, the garbage
collector
will be not automatically applied to it. You must explicitly add it
to the
list of the garbage collection.
Also, many thanks to all who have helped me in this topic.
Merry Christmas!

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned already, but just in case...
Take a look at ReleaseDistReference method of DistObjectMgr class.
The following is an excert from Forte Help on the topic:
"This method is needed because the distributed object manager keepsa
list of all anchored objects that have been handed out asdistributed
references, or are anchored objects that are being used asdistributed
references in other partitions. Invoking the ReleaseDistReferencemethod
lets the distributed object manager remove the object from itsinternal
list, which can then allow memory management to occur on theobject."

• More than 10 authentication questions?

Hi,
Is there a way to set more than 10 authentication questions on an account policy? E.g. via the API?
We're using Identity Manager 8.1.
Thanks,
Lachlan.

Ok, good to know it can be done. I tried this, but it didn't seem to work unless the "id" attribute for each question had a valid value. Did you fill in the ids for the questions yourself? If so, how did you determine what they should be?

• My iPhone 4S's music volume jumps every time I get a new email. Is this a bug? or is this intended behavior?

I am listening to music on my iPhone 4S (iOS 5) through headphones, and any time I get an email, the email notification plays, and then the volume of the music jumps up a few levels.
Is this a known bug or is this intended behavior? It is pretty annoying.

I didn't break stuff inside it. It's a known Apple fault that happens whether you are extra careful with it or not.
In saying that, I didn't ask about tips on how to prevent scratches/bumps happening because I already know. I am careful with it, I only dropped it once leading to very small chip on the back. What I asked you is whether Apple will take that into account much when deciding whether to replace it for the KNOWN Apple fault.

• VERY simple question: setCursor() intended behavior?

The javadocs for Component.setCursor() say:
"Sets the cursor image to the specified cursor. This cursor image is displayed when the contains method for this component returns true for the current cursor location, and this Component is visible, displayable, and enabled. Setting the cursor of a Container causes that cursor to be displayed within all of the container's subcomponents, except for those that have a non-null cursor."
This implies to me that if I say:this.setCursor(/*get predefined hand cursor here */); then it should be the case that whenever the mouse enters that Component or its subcomponents the cursor should change, and whenever it leaves, it should change back.
I do not see this behavior on a JLabel, and all the examples I've seen of setting a cursor on the JLabel require you to install a MouseListener to achieve this behavior.
Are the javadocs correct, and it's a bug in either AWT or Swing, or is there some other explanation?
Thanks,
Laird

• When I close Firefox 4.0 RC2, I have four or more instances of "plugin-container.exe" spawn before Firefox (and all of the spawned processes) close. Is this normal/intended behavior?

These processes seem to be independent of the normal plugin-container process spawned for Flash.

Probably the easiest way is to download Firefox again from http://www.mozilla.com and re-install it.

• More specific to two questions

Hi,
First of all, many thanks to Rottier, Daniel, Geoff. Your ideas are
definitely useful.
Regarding two questions I posted yesterday, I’d like to give you more
background information so that it will make questions more specific.
Now we have a lot of applications (programs) written in either C, C++,
Java codes or Forte (maybe other language like VB). Our purpose is to
integrate all the codes written for the different platforms such as
Windows NT and UNIX together seamlessly through CORBA or CORBA-IIOP
(Internet Inter-Object Request Broker Protocol). The most difficulties
I have met so far are to pass an object by its value. As you know,
CORBA specifications, version 2, don’t support the concept “pass object
by value”. But currently, some of CORBA vendors such as Forte and Iona
(OrbixWeb) do extend the concept “pass by reference” and support the
concept “pass object by value” for Java Mode not for IDL (Interface
Definition Language) Mode. If we want to integrate all codes together
without the support of “pass object by value”, the following question I
need to answer is the garbage collection in the Forte server side. In
CORBA IDL mode, I have to set all IsAnchored attributes of all objects
to TRUE. Can these objects be garbage collected? If yes, how does the
garbage collection work?
Please note that the client (C, C++, Java or other language) and the
server (Forte) are written using different languages (not limited to
Forte)! The question I posted can be much complicated if the client and
server are written in the different languages and for the different
platforms (NT and UNIX) as well as applied to the distributed and
multithreaded environment.
To be exact, if one of the multiple remote C++ clients decides not to
access the objects (not limited to service objects) in the Forte server,
how does Forte garbage collection know what the client has done
automatically and garbage collect the object? It is known that CORBA
does not support garbage collection. Is there any functionality
provided by Forte to let itself be automatically notified? As we know,
COM and DCOM do have such kind of functionality. When you integrate
DCOM with your applications, at both sides (client and server), it is
DCOM who internally poll the object references periodically. How about
CORBA and Forte? Forte has integrated IIOP as its own built-in
component and supported VisiBroker and IONA CORBA products. My guess is
because Forte has IIOP built in itself (both sides have to run ORB), so
Forte has the full control over the whole running environment, and can
monitor the references to the objects, and apply the garbage collection
to the objects automatically. Is this true? Here are the key words:
multiple, remote (distributed), different platforms and languages,
CORBA-IIOP. We should take all of these things into our consideration.
I did find that there is a big difference between IsAnchored set to TRUE
and FALSE when I tried to integrate C++ client, Forte server and Java
client, Forte server. For the C++ client, you have to set IsAnchored
attributes of all kinds of objects to TRUE. Note that In Forte, the
service objects and the ordinary objects are treated differently. The
service objects are created by Compiler or Interpreter. It is
transparent to the users. The ordinary objects are created at run time,
garbage collection can be applied to. For Java client, you can either
set IsAnchored attribute to TRUE or FALSE depending on what you want
(access the services provided by Forte server side by value or
reference). This really answers the question: IsAnchored can control
pass object by value or reference, and really matches what you guys
talked about in your e-mail. My thoughts are that IsAnchored has
nothing to do with the garbage collection, otherwise this will disable
the garbage collection at all! Because I have to set all IsAnchored
attributes to TRUE at Forte server side for my C++ client, if the
garbage collection is really based on the IsAnchored attribute, this
means that the garbage collection is totally disabled for all those
objects with their IsAnchored attributes set to TRUE! Can anyone
confirm that? Don’t forget that this issue is raised in such
complicated environment! What I want to clarify is whether Forte does
provide such a garbage collection mechanism so nice, so smart to
automatically maintain a persistent object reference table or whatever
and deal with the garbage collection issue in such complicated
environment!
Believe this can make my questions much specific and clear. I’d like to
discuss more details about it.
Thank you again for your informative ideas.

• More ACR for elements questions

After having played around with ACR 4.1 I have a few questions and observations:
Not all the the features described as being in 4.1 in this article
http://photoshopnews.com/2007/05/31/about-camera-raw-41/
seem to be accessible, e.g. holding down the alt key while looking at radius and sharpening values to see the masks applied. Are these features available from CS but not in elements (It's the same plugin) or were they never implemented in 4.1 but only in some beta copy of the SW?
As noted in different msgs, there is scarcely any documentation for ACR 4.1 except what I can glean from articles like the one above and from trial and error - am I correct in this assessment?
If I bring the raw file into elements, some of the functions can work on 16 bit files but for most I must permanently convert down to 8 bits. How much print quality am I losing for 11x14 blowups during this process? I guess I'm losing none in resolution (PPI) but a little in gradations of color and luminosity.
How does this raw pre-processing in ACR compare with the new Nikon Capture 4 ( I have a D40x) ? Is it worth having both sets of SW? I couldn't find a price for Capture4 in the website - only a 30 day download trial. Anybody have any idea how much it costs?
Now if I would only go out and shoot some more photos instead of nerding out on the tech stuff!! Thanks.
Chris

Thanks Barbara - you wrote:
Your printer will almost certainly downsample your image to 8 bits when you print, so you're not losing there. The loss, such as it is, is in the available gradations of color for editing.
Is this the case If I get it printed at a photo printing/editing store (we have Mtophoto here in CO which I really like because a couple of the guys there really know their stuff)?

• EntityImpl.lock() - intended behavior or bug?

Hi all,
For once, someone's complaining that they get too few RowInconsistentExceptions. I've run into what strikes me as odd behavior in EntityImpl.lock(). To me, it looks like a bug, but maybe it's intended in some way I'm missing, so I wanted to check here before going to metalink.
Steps to reproduce (with 10.1.3.4):
# Create a very simple BC project. All you really need is an application module with a single entity-based view object instance.
# Set locking mode to "optimistic".
# Run two separate instances of the BC tester. I'll call them instance A and B.
# In both instances, open the view object so that its query is executed.
# In instance A, change an attribute value and commit.
# In instance B, on the same row, change an attribute value and try to commit. You'll get a RowInconsistentException, as expected.
# Ignore the exception and try to commit instance B again. This time, the commit will go through, overwriting A's data change!
So far as I can tell (after a fair bit of debugging and popping back) the problem isn't with entity state or anything similar; it's with how lock() acquuires a DB lock. This is what seems to be happening, starting with step 6 above:
# Instance B requests a commit.
# lock() is called on the appropriate EntityImpl.
# lock() acquires a DB lock.
# lock() checks whether there is data inconsistency. There is, so it throws a RowInconsistentException.
# Instance B requests a commit again.
# lock() is called on the appropriate EntityImpl.
# The row is already locked in the DB, so lock() is effectively a no-op.
# The commit proceeds.
IMO, steps 3 and 4 are backwards. lock() shouldn't attempt to acquire a DB lock until after the consistency check has already happened. Either that, or it needs to re-check consistency even if a DB lock has already been acquired.
Thoughts? If this is a bug, is there a workaround? If not, why is this behavior desired? Is there a way to turn it off?
Thanks much,
Avrom

OK. Hmm, a workaround would really be nice, for those cases where you might try programmatically to fix the problem but are not sure your fixes succeeded.

• Inconsistant Question Login Behavior

Hello all,
I am working on implementing our requirements for forgotten password authentication questions. We have a somewhat unique policy regarding this. We want to always have a specific question asked. Then have 2 questions asked that are chosen from a random set. Then have 1 user defined question asked. Since there is no out of the box policy that captures this, I have been working to implement a solution. What I came up with was to redefine the fieldloop in the Question Login Form. Instead of looping through 'questions[*].name' I have it evaluate an expression I wrote. The expression selects questions based on the policy I outlined above. The form is working great. It displays the proper questions in line with our policy. The problem is the authentication of the questions. I have the policy set to 'any'. If I set it to 4 questions, which is how many I am asking, then the application will never let me authenticate. It will continually give me the 'Please answer at least 4 questions' error. At the suggestion of Dana from Aegis, I set the any policy to require only 1 question. The two required questions (the user defined and the admin defined questions) always work fine. However the two random questions work only sporadically. Sometimes I have to enter the answer for one of the random questions as many as 3 or 4 times before it will get excepted. This behavior seems weird. It is not consistent at all.
We are using IdM 6.0 with no service packs. Has anyone ran into this before? Does anyone have any advice about it?

Hi Jim, I had to build the following workflow to implement the password reset. You can tweak activity 3 'Select Questions' to do what you need. This workflow is not finished; it always selects the first three questions; but it I think it is usable.
Have fun with it. Theo

• More of a forum question...

I am wondering why some of my past posts aren't listed in "My Posts." As far as i know, I've haven't said anything inflamatory. Funny, yes, inflammatory, no.
Anybody have any ideas?

well
if it isn't on your list "MY POSTS" and the thread it was in is gone then they are gone
if you were the "reason" a thread got pulled you would have gotten an email from the Hosts informing you of that. if you weren't the "reason" then there would be no email.
if you have any more questions about how the discussions work it would be best to ask in the FEEDBACK Section at the top level of the discussions http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1076

• Yet more vanishing iTunes install questions

Greetings all,
I realize that numerous people are having this problem, and numerous solutions exist, but I'm seriously at a loss trying to figure this out right now.
Basically, the situation is this: I'm trying to help someone install iTunes on their school-issued PC laptop, and it seems to be suffering from the widespread vanishing installation problem (that is, the iTunes install runs right up to the point prior to the QuickTime install, then disappears and takes everything it did with it, desktop icon and all.)
I'm aware that the root cause of this problem seems to have to do with the setting of administrative rights under WinXP (Home in this case, by the way.)
Thus far, I've done the following relevant things listed in other threads in attempt to fix it:
1. Ran Windows Update and made sure that all critical updates were installed.
2. Checked the User Rights Assignments in the Local Security Policy section of the control panel as suggested in numerous posts. SERVICE and Administrator were NOT to be found there. Can these be added manually? If so, what is the proper way to do it?
3. Went through HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Setup\Recovery Console and set the Security Level value to 1. This didn't seem to have any beneficial effect (this was switched back to 0 after failing to work.. I assume that's the wise thing to do?)
4. Tried using the "Run as..." option on the iTunes installer both before and after having done all of these things. This presented a problem in and of itself, which I'll describe shortly.
5. I have not tried installing QuickTime separately, but my understanding is that they had already attempted that previously.
6. I've run SpyBot in an attempt to clear out Spyware, as well as F-Prot for viruses. Obviously, though, neither of those things appear to be the cause of this problem. Additionally, I've made sure virus scanning was turned off during attempts to install iTunes.
So, I'm not really sure where to go from here. Now, as noted above, this is a university-purchased laptop (Dell, but I am not sure of the exact model off hand; though I can find out if need be.) This leads to most vexing question I have:
Is it theoretically possible that this computer, being set up and administered by the school itself, would only allow administrative service to the school's Computer Network Services department which handles them? Going back to point 4 above, I noted that there were several different logins available on the "Run as..." menu, only one of which seems to be accessible to the students themselves (their personal login.) As noted however, there are other logins present on the "Run as..." menu, including one marked with the student's name + "administrator." Logically, I would expect that the students would have access to this since it bears their names, but we don't seem to have any password that works. Is it possible there's a default password in this case?
My inclination at the moment is to take it to the CNS desk and enquire about it, since all of the other logins have passwords unknown to us. Whether or not they would be able to help, I'm not sure. But I'm at a loss for other ideas at present, aside from playing with variations of the other steps I've taken.
That being the case, if anyone could offer any advice (assuming you understand this mess I've posted here :P,) either in regard to the aforementioned or anything else I haven't tried, it would be greatly appreciated.
She's tried calling apple support already, and after spending several hours on the phone, they told her they didn't understand what was wrong and that she should have the HD re-imaged. That seems a last-resort sort of thing to me, however, and I'm finding it difficult to believe that there is no more reasonable solution to this problem.
So once again, if anyone can offer any helpful advice, I thank you very much in advance!

Oh yes, we actually just tried the "delayed install" with 4.9 a little while ago and I'm quite happy to say it did the trick (with a bit of trial and error and a fair amount of quirkiness, at any rate.)
i keep getting these startling mental images of people hunched over their PCs, mice poised and ready to strike at the offending processes ... still, beats uninstalling and reinstalling SP2 ...
there's some nice work going on in the forum community on the =0/lady-vanishes problems at the moment. may be worth periodically checking in on progress. we may not get a one-size-fits-all-solution, but we may well make some more progress on some of the epicycles relevant to your situation.

• Cisco TelePresence - more detailed specs and questions

Hello,
I am currently conducting a light research into various video-conferencing systems and would love to know a little more about Cisco TelePresence video-collaboration solutions.
I have read the on-line publications made available by Cisco, but have a few remaining questions.
Following is the list of such questions, should you find yourself being able to answer any of them - please do net hesitate to do so:
Q. What is the frame rate of a 1080p video stream when it is being transmitted at no greater than 5Mbps bandwidth consumption?
Q. What is the maximum possible frame rate for a 1080p video stream?
Q. Given the 5 Mbps bandwidth consumption limits, what is the latency (without taking into account the underlying network latency) to encode and then decode the 1080p video stream at 25 fps?
Q. For the purposes of subjective visual evaluation - are there any downloadable images such as a single frame (1:1 screen-shot) of the 1080p video stream transmitted at 5Mbps and 25FPS?
Q. Security-wise ? what kind of encryption (if any) is being used to encrypt the video streams and how interoperable such encryption systems happen to be? For instance, are the encryption keys communicated in accordance with certain protocol/standard or is the process specific to Cisco products?
Q. Has anyone (formally or otherwise) tried to interoperate Cisco Telepresence with other video-streaming solutions (e.g. Conference-XP, VLC, etc.)? If, so what were the results?
Q. Do Cisco Telepresence systems support multicast traffic (e.g. one source / many recipients idiom).
Kind regards, Leon Zadorin.

also, just have 1 more question:
Q. In case if someone (i.e. a 3rd party software developer) was prepared to integrate their own video-streaming solutions (e.g. VLC, Conference XP, AccessGrid, etc.) with Cisco's Telepresence systems - is / will be there any way to obtain necessary technical documents regarding the functionality of Telepresence systems in order to achieve the desired interoperability?
To start with, such interoperability would be done at the very "basic" level: e.g. being able to see Telepresence's video streams in say VLC or AccessGrid or some other system and then may be being able to transmit video streams from VLC or similar in a format that allows Telepresence system to see the 3rd party content.
