Mosquito Hum in Garageband

I plug my Blue Yeti into my brand new iMac. Everything sounds perfect. But then I open Garageband, and as soon as the App opens I can hear a mosquito like high pitched hum. Close Garageband and the hum is gone.
So I switched to my MacBook Pro, and guess what? Same thing. I plug the mic in, everything sounds beautiful, open Garageband and the mosquito sound comes back.
This is definitely not the sound of the fans in my computer, or hard drive hum, again, this only happens when Garageband is open.
And yes, I tried an external powered USB hub. Didn't help.
Is there a setting in Garageband I can toggle off?

Which GarageBAnd version are you using? GarageBAnd 10 on a Mac or GarageBAnd on the iPad?
If on your Mac, you have probably the Cycle Region enabled - you will see it as a yellow bar at the top of the Track Area. Disable it by hitting the button with the two chasing arrows. Then the playback will start at the cursor position.

I'm using Duet 2 Audio Interface with Garageband 09, when I connect my acoustic guitar to the combi jack I get a buzzing/humming sound.  How can I eliminate this?

do you have any thing plugged into wall power? Audio interface, computer, speakers, amp for the guitar? if so are they all plugged into the same power strip? if so, have you tried another outlet?
Altertively have you tried a diffrent port on the combo jack? Have you tried a diffrent guitar cable? Have you tried a diffrent guitar or audio input device like a mic? Is the device directly plugged into the combo jack, or is it being routed throughs some thing?

  • HORRIBLE BUZZING/HUMMING WHEN CONNECTING SYNTHESIZER TO GARAGEBAND?

Hi! I want to connect my synthesizer to garage band so that I can use it as a live instrument when recording. I have a MobilePre USB from M-Audio. I just sent for an Imic, and I just bought a guitar cable adapter today from Griffin. Ok, when I use the M-Audio I get a horrible hum. I've tried different wall outlets, different volume settings, nothing works! When I plug directly into the computer using the guitar cable adapter I get a buzzing sound. It's the same kind of sound you might get through a guitar amplifier when you are playing live. It's infuriating!! If I would have known that this was going to happen I would have never invested the money. Is this what happens with all instruments that have their own power? Will the Imic get rid of the buzzing? DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT I CAN DO PLEASE? HELP! Thanks, Jim.
Power PC G5 dual processor   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

try plugging it into an amp, and see if you get the same results. With the Mobile Pre, you didn't need to get an iMic or that cable stuff. The Mobile Pre is a better usb interface than the Griffin stuff. If you still get the noise through an amp, then try a different cable. You shouldn't be getting that with any instrument. There's a problem somewhere in the chain. You'll have to test each link in the chain to try and locate it. Do you have other instruments you can try?

  • IMic, Garageband, and I'm ready to throw this thing...

Sorry ya'll, for the threat of violence against this expensive piece of machinary - but I'm seriously at the end of my rope...someone help?
I have a new MacBook Pro. Woot. I've got Garageband 3.0.4. Ok. I want to record. Nothing crazy - just a Griffin iMic, a Shure 58, and an acoustic guitar.
    Problems I'm having:
    1. hum. WAY too much hum on the iMic. It sounds like I'm recording onto my old GE tape recorder. This is unacceptable. Either the iMic is crap (not my particular one, but the product in general), or I'm doing something wrong. I have it plugged in to the USB port, and into it I've got a Shure 58 connected to an XLR - male 1/4" at the other end, which is made into an 1/8" via an adapter to plug into the iMic (seriously, why can't anyone get smart and realize that ALL REAL AUDIO EQUIPMENT USES XLR OR 1/4" and STOP with this 1/8" nonsense???).
    2. If I follow the instructions for the iMic, I should have the toggle put toward the 'input' side. Thing is, if I do that, the recording level is ridiculously low. So I turn it toward the 'output' side. Could this have something to do with the hum? I saw another post about 'grounding the iMic' - how the heck do I ground something in a plastic case????
    3. I also have a nice Digidesign MBox. Problem is, my computer won't recognize it. What's up with that? I saw somewhere else, in response to another post I left, that with 10.4.10 people have been having problems with USB audio interfaces? WHAT? What does that even mean? How do I fix this problem?
Thanks to anyone willing to try to answer these questions, I'm seriously, seriously frustrated. I bought this thing thinking I'd finally be able to record decent, bedroom-recording style audio with no fuss. It's been nothing but fuss.
So again. Thanks. Hope someone out there can help.
    Paz,
    Robby

I tried that set up for a while and all the fiddling didn't help. You've got a kick butt mic (same as mine) and you want to get real sounds. Do yourself a favour and get something like the Line 6 TonePort UX-1. It has an XLR for a mic input. It has proper amp & pre-amp options for the mic and the guitar through it's GearBox software. If you ever break down and get an acoustic electric it's got instument in (and it's wicked for electric guitar). It's not expensive and will make your headache go away overnight (and crank your fun up big time).
The notes below are accurate. You have a line level problem and a grounding problem. I like the iMic, I just don't use it much anymore.

  • How to Import Garageband projects and files into Cubase for Windows?

    Hi
I've recently started using Garageband to record my ideas and compositions. I had 2 main questions:
    1. How do I transfer the audio files created in Garageband in a format which will allow me to edit them in Music Software for a Windows based Operating system? Tranferring them to iTunes and then converting them to MP3 doesn't help because then my friends can't edit my guitar parts and other backing tracks.
Mainly I need to know how to save and import Garageband projects and individual tracks into Cubase/ Cakewalk for Windows so that my band guys can edit the tracks and send me their ideas.
I'm the only one out of my friends who has an Apple Macbook and most of my band guys still use Windows based Operating systems.
    2. I record my guitars and other instruments using the Digitech GNX4 guitar effects processor as the sound source through USB. While I can record clean guitar without any problem, the moment I switch on the distortions on the GNX 4, there is a loud and constant hum from the speakers. I am therefore not being able to record distorted guitar sounds.
    Please help on this.
Thanks and hope to hear from you all.
    Cheers
    Prash

Tranferring them to iTunes and then converting them to MP3
    same as the protools procedure:
    http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/GBFAQ.html#openinprotools
there is a loud and constant hum from the speakers.
Could be a ground loop problem. Test it using the MacBook on battery power only.

  • Unwanted Noise Recording Voice with GarageBand

Hi everyone, I'm using podcast factory as mic for my podcasts, and GarageBand to record them.
The trouble is, that even shifting a little in my chair is picked up by the mic, and I daren't type on the keyboard or really move at all for fear of putting really heavy noise on the track.
Im not sure what to do about this, as my voice sounds great apart from that!
    Anyone help me out? thx..

    Hello Nick,
Along with the excellent advice already given, here's what I would suggest: If you're using a desktop mic stand, avoid putting it on the same table or desk as your computer. You'd be surprised at how much rumble and hum the computer is creating. Also, use a foam wind cover over the mic.
If you don't have access to a "dead" room get a floor stand for your mic and record in a clothes closet. Yeah, I know it sounds stupid but I tried and got better results than sitting in my den. Rooms with hardwood floors, sliding glass doors and bare walls will affect the quality of your sound.
I'll mention one other thing that worked for me until I could afford better equipment; the Logitech 350 headset mic. It's USB and does a pretty good job of isolating your voice while you record.
    Hope this helps. Good luck!

  • Permanent humming noise on PowerBook aluminum 15

since a few days my PB has a permanet high pitch humming noise. It is relatively high frequency noise (a bot like that of a mosquito or a fly, or one of those electric vibration noises...
Can anybody help. It is so annoying, it makes it difficult to concentrate on the work.
    Thanks

    Yves:
Can you tell whether the noise is coming from a specific location of your computer? The possibilities that come to mind are a failing HDD or a troublesome cooling fan. The HDD is most the most likely suspect.
Try Repair Disk (directions below) paying special attention to the S.M.A.R.T Status and post back with results.
    Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior

  • Audio line out buzz, clicks and ground hum all of the sudden?

I've developed a nasty, sharp, buzzing from my audio line-out on my iMac G5, and it's gets twice as loud and unbearable when I put the computer to sleep. When I plug in a pair of iPod headphones and play a song, NO AUDIO WHATSOEVER appears in the phones, just a steady endless series of audible clicks. All connections were tested with new cables, etc., and it didn't make a lick of difference. My guess is that this issue has something ot do with the "optical out" dual-purpose jack 3.5mm jack, like it's internal switch is stuck half-on or something-- I saw a red light when plugging in the audio cable. Has anyone experienced a problem like this on their machine?

I've read about the red light here before. The jack does indeed read the impedence and then ping software to let it know something's attached. Perhaps try several different plugs in addition to the cables you've already tried. I know some speakers and headphones here at my place have WAY different impedence values.
Some people have been able to trouble shoot by creating a dummy user account to verify it's a software problem (the problem is gone in the new account). Other people have been successful resetting the core audio by running the GarageBand program. Not sure these tricks will help you, as 60 cycle hum leads me to think there's a hardware problem.
Let us know if this is helpful (as I only need 5 more points to hit 1000!)

  • High Pitch Humming

When I capture video with using iMovie, it makes a high pitch humming noise. How do I get rid of it?

has your recording device a headphone-jack?
connect a headphone, playback on 'camera' and check for that humming..
often, that is the tiny motor inside camera (tape/HDD) ..
    not iM fault...
share project to Garageband (iLife's audio processor) and use an Equilizer/'Grafic' Filter to filter any high frequencies before publishing project ..

  • Humming & Ticking sound recording via DJ Equipment?

I am new to garageband, I followed the tutorials and have tried recording and I am experiencing a nasty distortion of humming and ticking sound. I am using a regular RCA to mini mic cord input, it's a brand new cord.. I can hear the music but not without all this distortion.. Is there something I am not doing or missing? Please advise me with any helpful info... Thanks.

Are you sure you are recording through the line-in jack and not through the internal microphone? Have you set the input in GB's preferences?

  • Airport Express Hum only when AirTunes is not playing

    Hi,
I have an Airport Express, the Airport Admin Utility says it is Apple Base Station V6.3 (I presume that's the firmware version).
As long as AirTunes is streaming music to it, it works fine, but as soon as AirTunes stops streaming, there is a barely audible 60Hz hum (you have to be within 2 feet of the speaker to be able to hear it).
If I stream complete silence to it (I made a silent track with GarageBand to check this) there is no hum (there is a very faint white noise though, not sure if I like it much better than the hum).
So my suspicion is that if there is nothing streamed to AirPort, it lets its output go "open loop" and then the two feet of cable picks up the 60Hz from the electrical wiring in my house. It's similar to just connect an audio cable to your amp and leaving the other end just lying around, not plugging into any audio device.
Is there a patch/firmware update that would always keep the output "closed loop" if nothing is streaming to it?

thing I can think of is to change the source on the preamp (for instance
if Airtunes is on Aux, I push Tuner or Disc) when I have finished with
    Airtune and want some silence...
Interesting work-around. Unfortunately it won't work for me because I plugged AirPort Express directly into my poweramp .. left-over from my purist days when I didn't want a preamp sitting between the music and the poweramp
Good to hear someone else has the problem, I hope someone from Apple could chime in whether a firmware change to "close the loop when not streaming" is technically possible, or if there is any other type of solution.

  • How do I use Garageband for iPad with a real amp?

I play with a guy down the street who has a couple of amps set up. The one I use is kind of limited in it's tonal qualities. In my twenties and thirties I would have no problem hauling my own amp down there to get my tones dialed in, but I'm forty freakin' seven and too old for that!  When I have tried to plug the iPad into my amp at home, I get terrible feedback.  I used to have a Rockman (remember those?) and I could take it with me and plug into any guitar amp set to clean and be good to go, how do I do that with my iPad and Garageband?
I'm using a no name "y" cord with the 1/8" three ringed input into the ipad and a 1/8 stereo and 1/4 inch outputs-all sounds great on headphones, and with computer speakers, but need to plug into a real guitar amp.
I am using a 50 watt Yamaha to test and am having no luck at all.  I know it has to do with impedance, but I am not very versed in how to get around it.
    Thanks in advance!

Okay, after fiddling around some more, I’m able to get–some-settings to work.    1) set the real amp to clean settings (duh).  Keep the volume on the low side (double duh). 2) stick to the smaller amps from the “clean and “processed” groups ofpresets.
The only way (so far) I’ve found to get some crunch is by turning the gain up on the GB amp you’re using, but only to a point, then I got feedback again.
Also, my “y” cord does have a name, it’s a GriffinTechnologies GuitarConnect Cable. I haven’t tried any of the other devices, so I can’t say if the feedbackwould be less irksome on other devices, but I kind of doubt it.

  • How do I use a bluetooth headset with garageband?

How do I use a bluetooth headset with garageband? I can't get it to work after many tries.

I can pair the headphones with the computer but the sound from GB is distorted and muffled. I can barely hear it. The set works with iTunes, but not with GarageBand.

  • Loops not showing up at all in Garageband.. but are on computer...

    Hey,
My loops are not showing up... however I don't have my CDs with me at Uni. However, I disovered by using Spotlight that the loops are actually on the computer in a folder called "Apple Loops for Garageband". They are in my user library and the garage band preferences are set to "share loops with this user only" or whatever the option is called - suggesting that it is correct for this folder to be in the User libray and not the main library.
However I don't even have grayed out samples - they just are not there at all.
I tried dragging one or two from the folder to Garageband manually and they copied over fine and are now in the sample library... however it won't let me copy them over all in one go for some reason...??
I have a lot of samples so don't want to do them one by one... so before I resort to that - any advice...?? Whats going on?
    Thanks in advance.

hey, yea i've been having the same problem, just bought this new imac, and none of the audio loops are working (they all show up gray). i actully spent the time, clicking and draging each one individually, but guess what? not all the loops are there!!! i'm sooo cofused, if anyone has figured this out, that would be extremely helpful thanks!!!!

  • Why does GarageBand audio work for guest user but not my account?

Hello, I have a 15-inch MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3) from late 2011 that I bought brand new in 2012. I'm running OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 and my MacBook has 500 GB of storage.
About a month or two ago I tried to download the new GarageBand (10.0.2) but I had trouble completing the loops download. The download would stop halfway through because of a network error. So last week I decided to try to download it again, and I was able to do so after reading some discussions about the issue. I successfully completed the download in safety mode and then I restarted my MacBook. At this point I was able to open GarageBand 10.0.2 and create a new project. Unfortunately, there was no audio coming through the output and sound bar for the various audio components in GarageBand. I had no audio when previewing the loops or playing it back in an audio track. I didn't really test anything else out because I figured I needed to fix this problem first. I have read many discussion boards about audio problems with GarageBand. I have already made sure everything is set properly in the GarageBand preferences and the audio preferences in system preferences. I've tried restarting GarageBand and restarting the computer.
This evening I found a discussion from the username icewhatice and they seemed to have had my exact problem. I'm not sure that I found the answer on this discussion though. For reference, this is what icewhatice posted: "I have no audio coming from Garageband 10.0.2. Downloaded it on Saturday and have spent the last two days trying to figure out why it won't work. I'm using a macbook pro with an Alesis QX49. GB registers keyboard when I plug it in but no sound whatsoever, not even from the onscreen keyboard. It seems to read the keyboard as if I play a C chord, it appears in the display. I've done all the obvious stuff like check preferences, restart, I've deleted and downloaded new GB several times and always with same result. Actually, it took me about four attempts to download it in the first place as I was getting an internet connection error message right at the end of the download, and I see others have had that problem. Managed to solve that by downloading in safe mode but now the no sound thing is driving me absolutely crazy because I can't play my keyboard!!!!! Also, worth noting that there is no audio level being read anywhere, I believe in the new version this appears in the volume control at the top. I've also looked into it potentially being a problem with my keyboard and it possibly needing an update but can't find any difinitive answer for that anywhere. I've stopped looking into that because the on screen keyboard doesn't even work - if that worked then I would know at least GB works and it's something to do with the keyboard. So, I am at a complete loss. If anyone has any ideas about why this is happening or what I could do to solve then I would be very grateful."
After reading this, I realized that I am unable to create new tracks, and I realized that I have the same problems with old projects saved from the last version of GarageBand I had. I have not tried to download GarageBand again since it did not work for icewhatice. léonie ended this post by saying: "Something is certainly wrong - either the current project, some settings in your user account, or the downloaded GarageBand version. Or incompatible software may be interfering. If a new project does not work, try to test by logging into a different user account, for example the "Guest User" account. Create a new project using this account. Does GarageBand work better from this account?  Then we will need to troubleshoot your preferences."
I have tried this and started a new GarageBand project in the "Guest User" account. GarageBand was working fine in the "Guest User" account and all of the audio was working properly. Does anyone know how I should troubleshoot my preferences?

If an application is working in a different account, but not in your regular account, try t find out, what you configured differently in your own account, for example start-up items or preference panes you are using, applications and other helper tools, that are only installed for your regular account. As a first guess, remove GarageBands preference files from the user library in your Home folder.
But you will have to reset all settings you did in the GarageBand preferences dialog. And GarageBand will not remember the last project. You'll have to find the file manually.
Remove these files from your User Library to a folder on your Desktop:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.garageband10/
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.garageband.plist
    ~/Library/Caches/garageband
Quit GarageBand, then remove the files to a folder on the Desktop and restart the computer, before trying again to open GarageBand.
You user library may still be hidden, as is the default in Mavericks: To open your hidden user library:
Select the "Home" folder icon (the little house)  in the Finder's sidebar and press the key combination ⌘J to open the "view options".
    Enable "Show Library Folder".
Then open the Home folder and open the Library folder inside and navigate to the Preferences, Caches, or Containers folder. Remove these folders completely - don't leave anything inside:  ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.garageband10/,
    ~/Library/Caches/garageband  .
