Most apps and files on my MacBook disappeared in front of my eyes.

Today I witness something exceptional:
I was running CleanMyMac2 (it was uninstalling some apps) while doing some other basic tasks (using Safari, iTunes). The CPU was working pretty hard and fans ran at full speed. After a few minutes, CleanMyMac seemed to be stuck. I did press the 'stop uninstall' (or something equivalent). All of a sudden, all of my applications and files started disappearing in front of my eyes! Literally! I opened the applications folder and one after another the icons disappeared. There are a few exceptions: my desktop files are still there and Xcode (which I hardly every use)... The dashboard also still works, but all utility applications are gone. My dock is filled with question marks. iStat menus is still running though. The files and apps are not in the Trash. Also the hard drive seems to be filled like it was before.
My MacBook Pro setup:
15inch i7 mbp mid 2010
8gb ram
1tb hd and 128gb ssd working together as an Apple fusion drive (I updated this about a month ago)
I did update to mavericks yesterday and everything worked fine.
I suspect that the 1tb hard drive has failed. Clearly the operations system is on the ssd to ensure optimal performance so that would explain why the system still boots. However, there are a few things that do make me doubt:
1) When I duplicate some large folders on the desktop and keep an eye on iStat menus, I see that the first 4gb will be written to the ssd, after that it still writes the remaining data to the 1tb hard drive.
2) I did boot in internet recovery mode and performed disk scans. No errors or problems have been found.
I'm getting a bit desperate. Your advice on what to do next is very much appreciated.
Bart

I restored the macbook from a time machine backup. Everything seems to work fine. Disk scans don't show errors and the weird sounds during shutdown are gone...
I still don't really trust the hard drive, though.

  • How can I set up company ipads with preloaded apps and files?

I want to set up multiple ipads with preloaded apps and files before handing them out to employees.  We intendend the employee to be able to install their own content on the device using their own itunes account.  When I attempted to connected to a pc using a personal account my the content obtained by the company account was prompted to be removed.  Was this done incorrectly?  Is there a way I can set up company ipads with preloaded apps and files so that they don't get removed when the user connects them to another computer with another itunes account?
Right now we are looking to have the employee use their own itunes account and reimburse the expense for the needed apps, but this could be an issue if they leave the company and the device is reassigned.

Yes this is possible. I've been using Apple Configurator to do this (you could also use iTunes to restore backups). The trick is, you need to tell the end user not to sync apps within his/her iTunes on his/her computer. You will need to instruct the end user to download apps OTA using the App Store on the iPad rather than with iTunes on his/her computer. If the user tries to sync apps on his/her computer, it will wipe out apps that you installed. However if the user downloads apps OTA, your apps and the user downloaded apps will both stay on the iPad.
When you hand the iPad to the user, be sure to log out of your company Apple ID on the iPad at Settings -> Store and have them sign in with their personal Apple ID. That way it is all set for them to download apps under their own Apple ID.

  • While intending to perform a clean install of Mountain Lion while continuing with old apps and files, is it a waste to restore a backup that was made while running Mountain Lion as an UPgrade from Lion?

While intending to perform a clean install of Mountain Lion while continuing with old apps and files, is it a waste to restore a backup that was made while running Mountain Lion as an UPgrade from Lion?
Originally I was running Mountain Lion as an UPgrade from Lion. I created a backup in Time Machine, performed a clean install of Mountain Lion, then I proceeded to use Time Machine to restore the back up.
When thinking about the essence of a back up restore, it occurrs to me that for all I know, I may have just wated my time IF Time Machine also restores all the old unneeded files that remain from Lion after an upgrade.
Since the backup was made while running Mountain Lion as an upgrade from Lion, did restoring this backup defeat the purpose of a clean install by reinstalling old Lion files?
If so, how can I re-do the last portion of the process so that I get all my home-folder files and apps back without the full bulk of old Lion files? Migration assistant I'm guessing?

    Hello John!
Thank you for your response which solved my problem. For other users who may stumble upon this, I'll clear up the confusion and share how I solved the problem with your help; When looking for answers to my computer problems, finding unresolved questions where person B offers a solution and person A never comes back and says "That worked, thank you.", it demonstrates a "k-thnx-bye" user mentality that leaves others with the same problem lost. Without further ado:
It is not clear what you did because the meaning of "clean install" is vague. You can erase a volume and install an OS which leaves none of its previous content intact,
This is what I did: I erased the volume leaving no previous content intact, while then installing OS X Mountain Lion.
or you can upgrade an existing OS (or reinstall the same one) which does not alter your user - installed files.
An upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion is what I started with initially before erasing anything. This was undesirable. Since this can cause Macs to run slower (especially whereas I'm using a mid-2011 Mac Mini), my goal was to go from operating within an upgrade to Mountain Lion, to operating within an installation of Montain Lion that was not preceded by any other oprating system.
Hence a "clean install of Mountain Lion while continuing with old apps and files" is confusing.
Well put and understood. What I should have said was:
    1.Erase the volume
    2.Install Mountain Lion clean
3.Confirm that Mountain Lion is functioning properly
4.Proceed to use either Time Machine or Migration Assistant to Import/Migrate/Copy over only two things; My old apps (That had been stored originally in the designated Applications folder) and all files and folders originally stored in the home folder under users.
If you restore from a Time Machine backup then all modifications that occurred subsequent to that backup become erased. It renders moot any OS X upgrade performed subsequent to that backup.
That makes sense and is just as I later suspected.
If so, how can I re-do the last portion of the process so that I get all my home-folder files and apps back without the full bulk of old Lion files? Migration assistant I'm guessing?
    Yes.
This is what I did and everything works perfectly. Thank you so much once again!

  • What are the best storage systems to archive inactive (but still used) apps and files?

What are the best storage systems to archive inactive (but still used) apps and files of all types? I already have a Time Casule which I back up on and I'm needing to create more space in my flash drive in my Mac Pro, so I need another external storage system I can use to archive all that I don't currently need. I may still wish to edit and use the files, and I am not very techy and am a broke student... so anything grossly expensive is a no-no for me (between $50 and $200 is idyllic). If you could simply post links of different good/useful hard-drives that I can use, I'd be thankful.
    Thank you
p.s. I'm australian, so anything within this country would be great. Or I can deal with somewhere that has cheap shipping.

It's been moved and seconded. Any discussion? Yes:
Buy two external drives. Use one for Time Machine. Be sure this drive is at least twice the capacity of your computer's hard drive. Use the second drive as a bootable clone of your computer's hard drive. Should something happen you can immediately get the computer up and running from the clone until your restore from the Time Machine backup. This is what is called redundancy. Should either backup drive fail, there's another to take its place. Backup redundancy is very important. You can never have too many backups.

Change your settings in Sharing preferences, for one, and remove the server out of the Finder's sidebar. Obviously, this is the result of transfering all your other computer's preferences to your new computer.

  • Transfering old MacBook programs and files to new MacBook

Is it possible to transfer my programs and files from my 2008 MacBook to a new MacBook?  If so is it difficult?

I tried to use the migration assistant and had the old Macbook in Target mode but there was no reaction at all. It didn't recognise that there was anything attached. Tried time machine but it won't recognise that there is old backups at all - just starts it as a new time machine.

  • IBooks App and File Sharing

I have iBooks on my iPad 2 and iPhone4.  I also have some PDF files that I transferred from my desktop computer into my iBooks Library.  I'm assuming that I transferred those PDF files via the File Sharing protocol with the iBooks App.
I now want to add another new PDF file to my iBooks Library, however I don't see iBooks as an available App for File Sharing in the Apps window; I see the following Apps as being available,  GarageBand, Google Earth, Keynote, Kindle, Pages, and Quickoffice --- but no iBooks.  I can't determine what I did to transfer some previous PDF files into iBooks, I assume it was with the file share feature and that iBooks was a listed App available for file sharing, but it does not appear as available now.
Is there another way to get a PDF file into iBooks or is there something that I need to perform to get iBooks to appear as a File Sharing App.

It's not done via file sharing, it's done via the Books tab on the device in iTunes . You can add the PDFs into iTunes either via File > Add File to Library or by dragging them over and onto iTunes - they should then appear in the Books section of your iTunes library (if Books doesn't appear on the left-hand pane as a 'Library'  then you can add it by ticking it on the General tab in Edit > Preferences). You can then add them to your iPad either by dragging them across from the Books library and onto the iPad, or via the iPad device's Books tab

  • IPad content copier - Can i duplicate apps and files onto more than one iPad?

    Hi all,
I am setting up ipads for 6 salesmen plus myself. I have set mine up so far with certain usefull apps and PDF's of our brochures. When initially setting up the ipads for my collegues, i would like them all to be set up the same, with the sames apps (but obiously different email addresses etc) and documents.
Is it possible to do this? Loading hundreds of PDFs onto Adobe PDF reader application seems to be a really slow proccess, hence why I dont fancy doing this a further 6 times!
If any one could help, or offer advice, i would be very greatful.
    Warren.

Another app to look into is Readdle Docs. I don't think it's free anymore but it's one that I got as an alternative PDF reader but it also has file management and browser capabilities. It may allow for you to put the files they need in an online place they can access while still allowing each of them to have his iPad set up iwth his own Apple ID

They may not have an iPad version, but the iPhone version works, just not as pretty.

  • My apps and Control Center calculator have disappeared on my iPhone 5s!!

I just bought this phone in December and was having a lot of fun learning how to use it.
All of my apps have been working fine, but suddenly this week a bunch of them are just gone... and so is the calculator in my Control Center!
It is an iPhone 5s.  Operating System iOS 7.0.4.  Sprint.
I have not used anything called 'jailbreak.'  It is a brand new phone, not a restored one.
I have researching solutions on forums and youtube and I have tried the following suggestions:
    - Swipe my screen right --> Use the search bar to find my apps.
    - swiping between different screens and folders where they may have been displaced
    - Settings --> General --> Reset --> Reset Home Screen Layout
    - Settings --> General --> Reset --> Reset All Settings
    - Delete all of my apps.  Plug the phone into my laptop.  iTunes --> App Store --> redownload them from iTunes. (my laptop app store did not show iphone apps, just laptop apps)
All of these suggestions had no success.  The Reset All Settings was a killer.  I backed up everything I thought I needed on iCloud but missed some things.  So now after all those trials, I lost a bunch of my info, my wifi and settings are reset, and I am still missing my apps and Control Center calculator
    PLEASE SOMEBODY HELP ME!
I am not very technologically advanced, so if there are any new suggestions you can offer, I would greatly appreciate it!
And please explain them in layman's terms    thanks

    Is that the only option?
Why would I have suggesed it if there were a simpler option that you didn't aready try without success?
I'm afraid I will lose even more information.
Did you read the support article I linked for you - specifically the part about backing up and restoring the backup?

  • I can't transfer Macbook applications and files to new macbook pro - Please help!

I have treated myself to a Macbook pro. I have had a macbook from 2008 it has Lion on it. I can't transfer all my information and applications from the old one to the new one...I have logic Pro 9 and Final Cut express, which I bought from apple but haven't got the disks anymore after a fire. What can I do? Tried the ethernet connection and the firewire thing...it's not seeing the old machine. Please help!

I tried to use the migration assistant and had the old Macbook in Target mode but there was no reaction at all. It didn't recognise that there was anything attached. Tried time machine but it won't recognise that there is old backups at all - just starts it as a new time machine.

  • I restarted my mac and many apps and files disappeared. It's like it booted to a state several months ago. My CS 5 apps are not in the dock or applications folder. Has this ever happened before and what can I do?

It's like it booted to a state it was in several months ago. My CS 5 apps are not in the dock or applications folder. Has this ever happened before and what can I do?
The files on my desktop are not the ones that were there when I shut down. It's like it's gone back in time.
My display's power supply got fried (I think) in a power outage so I bought a new one. However, every time I restart the display usually stays black. I have found I need to keep rebooting until it kicks in and starts working. I unplug everything, wait a while (a few minutes to overnight) and try booting again.
This last time the display finally came on but I'm faced with this problem. I used to use time machine, but I deleted everything and disabled it a couple months ago or more so I'm at aloss as to why the mac is booting into the state it was in sevearl months ago.
What could I have done to cause this? Has this ever happened to anyone else and is there a solution?
Note: I did a search for a file I knew was created today. I found it and it showed that it was a file I had saved on the desktop this morning--even though that file's icon is not appearing on the desktop now.
I did a search for photoshop and saw my CS5 version listed.
However, I did a couple more searches and these files no longer appear in the search. I don't know if they're there or not. This is bizarre!
    I'm on a Mac Pro, 10.6.2.

Thanks for the obvious question. I mean it. The very same thought came to me this morning and, sure enough, I had booted into another drive--my old one that, of course, had the old desktop, etc.
It didn't dawn on me that this was the case since I hadn't set it as a boot drive but I guess in the course of all the restarts I did, it got switched.
    I'm back to normal again.

  • Deleting Adobe CS apps and files

when l upgraded my PB to MPB, on the advice of this forum it was recommended l manually drag files rather than use migration assistant. l dragged-n-dropped my CS apps which caused errors and l reinstalled from install discs (had them sent from home as l'm overseas student) and deleted the original apps but l still have the original prefs which cause grief when l right-click files and there's a huge submenu with duplicated options. How do l trash the original pref and hidden files or is it a full reinstall? Hope this makes sense, thanks

I don't know where you got that advice. Anyone here asking for that kind of advice gets this article:

  • Is it possible to restore individual apps and files after clean install of Lion?

My new iMac is one of the small group that is having HDD drive replaced due to issue with 1TB Seagate drives.
When I get it back I'd like to install a clean copy of Lion and not restore whole system from TimeMachine.
However I don't want to lose my iTune or Aperture Libraries.  Is it possible to restore just these libraries form TimeMachine backup or is there a better way to go?  Email is all IMAP so not an issue, F/Fox & Safari bookmarks and all contacts & iCal material are likewise MobileMe/cloud based so not an issue.
Just after safest and best solution.
    Thanks

The short answer is: yes you can restore only these libraries from the last Time Machine backup.  It's quite easy
    1) Clean install Lion
    2) Enter time machine from the menu bar while pressing "option" (Browse other Time Machine disks).
    3) Restore the Libraries.
Individual apps are tricker - depending on how they were installed in the first place.  Anything that used an installer, and may rely on library frameworks (e.g iwork or MS Office) is not going to work easily with this method.
