Most apps hanging on launch (bouncing forever in the dock)

It just happened to me that blender was bouncing in the dock and not responding when I tried to open it, which is very unusual. So I tried to open a few other apps and most of them did the same thing. "This is very f*cked up," I thought.
I rebooted and the same thing happened again. Rebooted a second time and the problem was mysteriously gone.
What the f*ck was that all about? Is my SSD experiencing bad blocks?

Not necessarily.  If you use any system cache cleaners they can corrupt the launchservices cache, which can lead to launching problems.
The worst of these require third party removal tools:

Other issues that lead to slow Macs can also affect launching as well:

random (most) apps won't launch. both in 10.5.5 & 5.6
also, i have a dup'd & bootable version of my os on an external drive. when selecting it to boot from in startup disk, the laptop shows the apple logo and the drive spins up and then spins down with which then the laptop totally powers off. this happens, again, during the showing of the apple logo. tried connecting the drive via fw 400 & 800.
but like the first sentance, my apps aren't launching. i have gone thru disk utility, leopard cashe cleaner, mac pilot, oynx and even looked over various permissions. basically used every tool in all of those apps.
don't know if the drive boot failure has anything to do with it, but i thought i'd mention it.
also, this started in 10.5.5. after trying everything listed above, i upgraded via the combo update and the problem continued.
i have disconnected everything and tried all of what i know. might anyone have the same experience or some tricks to try to snap this macbook pro back into shape?
    thanks....

The only freeware is Disk Utility, which is basically running fsck. You could boot from your install disk, then access the Disk Utility from there and run the Repair Disk function. At least you will then see what the failure is. AFAIK all free utilities which will run a repair function use the same UNIX routine which is already present on your Mac. If it won't work, then you are going to have to pay, the two disk repair programs that have the best reputations are Disk Warrior TechTool Pro, with more people preferring Disk Warrior. Be sure to use Disk Utility to check the SMART status of the drive too (depending on the drive this may not be available). Also see if you can Repair Permissions in Disk Utility when booted normally.
The only somewhat more problematic than normal applications I have noticed that caused higher than average glitches are third party goodies, especially torrent programs and things like Speed Download and Little Snitch. Of course, things that hack the system can be problematic too, I avoid Unsanity haxies for instance, although lots of people love the stuff.

  • HT4906 I have just downloaded Mountain Lion but my iPhoto app cannot be launched as it says the original app cant be found. It takes me to where is says its located but its not there.  What to do?

I have just downloaded Mountain Lion but my iPhoto app cannot be launched as it says the original app cant be found. It takes me to where is says its located but its not there.  What to do?

    Reinstall it?
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • Tried to install firefox 4 and I can't get the icon to drag into my applications file, it just keeps bouncing back to the dock.

Really that's about it, your instruction page to upgrade for free to Firefox 4 (Mac desktop) says to drag the Firefox icon into the app file and then from there onto the dock. I'm not sure WHICH icon I am dragging, so I tried the one on the dock, and even the one on your instruction page. Nothing will stay in the app folder.

Hold the option while turning on the computer. You should see your statup drives. Just choose the OS X drive and eject your disc once in OS X.

  • Most apps won't launch - Safari, Disk Utilities, FontBook, Help, Systm Pref

This morning my MacBook powered down because the battery ran out. When it powered up everything seemed fine. A couple hours later Safari crashed. Now it won't launch at all. Most Apple apps won't launch now, including Disk Utilities, Font Book, Help, System Preferences, etc. My software update says I am up-to-date on all software, nevertheless, I used Windows Explorer to download the OX 10.4.9 update and re-installed it. No change in my error. I have read the other posts and most suggest to use Disk Utility, but what do I do if I can't launch Disk Utility? Thanks!

  • New apps won't install, just bouce in the dock and time out

Was wondering if anyone could help me out with this. I'm in Japan and apple support in English seems to be manned by one guy whose only solution to any problem is to backup everything and reinstall. Getting kind of frustrated.
Lately, I am unable to install new software I download from the web. It downloads the package, loads the disc image and if I click on install.app , the icon bounces in the dock for about minute then times out and I have to force quit it. If I install an app that just requires dragging the app into the app folder, when I try to open it, the same thing happens. I can't pinpoint when this started or what might have caused it but the last app I was able to successfully download and install was a trial version of Bento. I've tried about 10 different apps and its the same problem with each.
Any ideas what might be causing this? Help is very much appreciated!!

    Thanks Daniel!
Onyx worked. Though I'm not sure what part of it worked. I had to try several different cleanings and whatnot. Seems like the problem might have been Desktoptopia. I remember now, when I installed that software, these problems came up. Now, everytime I reboot, I get a "are you sure you want to open this file downloaded from the internet" box for desktoptopia even though I can find no trace of the app on my computer anymore. Very strange.
Anyway, at least apps are installing again. Thanks!

  • Safari/internet launcher icon deleted from the dock and now missing

I am new to the Mac so there is probably an easy solution I just haven't discovered yet, but when playing with my preferences yesterday, I switched the dock to the left side and mistakenly deleted the internet launcher icon (the springboard-like icon with the @ symbol) but couldn't figure out what was gone and then emptied my trash later in the day. It doesn't help that I don't know exactly what the shortcut/launching icon was called, but I can't find it anywhere in Applications or through Safari. Now, in order to go on line I have to pull up Safari and then go from there.
Any idea how to restore the launching icon since it appears to have been wiped from the harddrive?

Hi vin, welcome to the Mac world.
The little icon that looks like @ on a spring is nothing but a web location. If you click on it and your browser isn't running it will launch your browser and then open the web page it references. I believe the original was a link to Apple. If you want it back just click on the wee little icon at the start of a URL in your browser address space and hold that click while you drag it to the Trash side of the Dock.
You can add and substract anything you want to the Dock--just drag whatever it is to the Dock or from the Dock. Applications go on the side of the Dock with the Finder icon, other things on the side with the Trash. Running Applications (there should be a little triangle next to the ones that are running) can't be removed while running.
I strongly suggest you get David Pogue's Missing Manual book on Tiger, you will discover many many things to help you get the most from your new Mac.

  • OS X Mavericks made dock background color too light to easily see app indicator lights. Can I make the dock background darker?

Can I make the dock background color darker to see app. indicator lights easier. Installing OS X Mavericks made it too light.

Hacking around, I found a fix to my own zombified terminal problem.
Control-click (right-click) on the tab to the terminal and one of the options is 'MOVE TAB TO NEW WINDOW'
On moving the terminal tab to the new window, the old terminal window is responsive again (Allowing scrolling to old error messages, etc.)
You have to do this for each tab in the zombified window one-at-a-time
but you can drag all new windows back together as tabs to a single window if you feel like it.
Before trying this, I tried a lot of the other click options and the other options were as unresponsive as the whole terminal window with the problem.

  • When Terminal.app hangs on launch

Every once in a while on an OS X client or server machine, opening a new shell window in Terminal.app either takes a very long time or never gets to a command line prompt (never meaning more than 10 minutes, at which point I give up). When in this state, it happens every time, and my main recourse is to reboot the machine (via the GUI which still seems to work fine).
The last time this happened I also tried to log in to a command line from another machine using SSH. Again, after typing in my password for SSH, the window just sat there--no prompt showed up. Also, I tried to use Terminal.app's "New Command..." and put in "ls" (running without a shell) to see if anything would happen. No--it just hung also.
I was wondering how to troubleshoot this issue. Not being a big UNIX honcho, I don't know what could be going wrong: either the term settings have gone bad, or Terminal can't read .bashrc, .bash_profile or other startup scripts, or those startup scripts are hanging. Perhaps access to the logging in user's home directory has been broken or something else?
I wonder if anyone out there has spent enough time when this happens to figure out what has gone wrong, or if there is some way I could troubleshoot it myself, using some magic way to start up Terminal without invoking startup scripts or using other term settings. How would one go about finding out what the problem is if you can't use Terminal.app or SSH?

hello i have experienced this problem today too on our xserve as i was trying to log in remotely via SSH. after entering password, nothing. very frustrating as this should not be happening especially on a server. i had to physically log in at the console and reboot the server in order to get functionality restored. i notice quite old discussions on this topic so i don't understand why it hasn't been resolved with some update. the xserve is running 10.6.1 and i notice 10.6.2 is out. will of course run the update and hope that this has been fixed.

  • I am still having LR4.2 problems with app crash when launching plusloading images 'losing the source

this has another thread, but some of the entries are older.. so I am asking again.  I entered this information last night.
I am having  intermittent app crashes on booting lightroom4.2.  It happens  whether  I just open it, or if I import pictures.  the second try is usually successful.
Also,  lightroom 'loses the source' while importing images. After all the thumbnails load, it loses the source.    This was a problem previously only with selecting images to import, nwt it happens all the time on import.

wellllll. its been ages and nobody ever offered a solution.  i was ready to tear my hair out with computer crashes and other issues...after the update to LR 4.3 a lot of my problems ended abruptly, but i still have the lost source issues occasionally.
most of the time i can exclude a row of images or include only a row, but i cant select a few at random to be imported.

  • I am having trouble with safari and most apps shutting down when I'm in the middle of stuff what do I need to do to resolve this?

I am havering trouble with safari and apps shutting down on me all the time what can I do to resolve this problem. Thanks :-)

Make sure you have enough free space on your iPad. With iOS 7 it is recommended that you have 15-20% of the storage space on the device free.  For a 16 GB device that is 2.4-3.2 GB free. For a 32 GB device that is 4.8-6.4 GB free. For a 64 GB device that is 9.6-12.8 GB free.
Also try a reset. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.

  • Mail app won't open~just dances in the dock

It does. Just dance. I can go on-line to retrieve my .mac mail - and Entourage works fine on the computer as my husband's mail access ~ however, I can't seem to find the problem with Mail (and thus not the solution). I did remove the com.apple.mail.plist to see if it would work (it didn't help). I have repaired permissions ... any suggestions other than calling Georgie-boy to drive 90 miles (one-way) to try to fix this?

Verify/repair your disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
Now, take a look at the following article, in case this is a font issue:
Font Management in Mac OS X Tiger and Panther
You may also want to read the following article:
Multiple applications quit unexpectedly or fail to launch
If the above doesn't work, proceed as follows to try to identify the problem:
    1. Open /Applications/Utilities/Console.
    2. From the File menu, choose either Open Console Log, or Open System Log, or both, so that the Console application displays the contents of both system.log and console.log.
    3. In the Finder, go to the /Applications folder, and try to open Mail by double-clicking on it.
    4. Look at the bottom of the Console windows for messages that might have been written there as a result. They may provide some clues as to what the problem is.

  • When i click on my launch pad icon on the dock, and it opens, there are no photo icons only words!! Any body know how to get picture icons back ???

When i click into my launchpad on my dock, and it opens, there are currently no picture icons only words. How do i get my picture icons back?? plase help

This procedure will reset the state of LaunchPad to its default. Any customization that you did will be removed.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Application Support/Dock
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open. Inside it are one or more files with long names ending in ".db". Move those files to the Desktop, leaving the folder open. Log out, log back in, and test. If there's no change, put the files you moved back where they were, overwriting the ones that may have been created in their place. Then log in and log out again. Otherwise, delete the files you moved.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Downloaded apps won't launch on mac

My computer died.  (2007 iMac).  The logic board failed.  The internal drive was fine.  It is now an external hard drive and is copied to another external for backup.  I am using the backup (much younger hard drive hardware) as the boot drive on my MacBook Pro.  Problem is...none of my purchased Mac App Store applications launch.  They bounce once.  If I'm lucky, an Apple ID/password dialog pops up telling me the app was purchased on another computer and to enter my credentials to install it on the present computer.  (I learned that the apps have a tie to the GUID, a hardware key, and hence my failed logic board and running now via a surrogate MacBook Pro is tripping up the App Store apps.)  So, I click OK and it twirls a moment and then disappears.  The app doesn't launch still, automatically after the re-verification of authenticity or by me clicking/double-clicking on it again.  Just one bounce in the dock, then nothing.  I tried deleting the app, logging out of the Mac App Store, and back in, and going to the Purchases page and the App still says "Installed" so I can't re-download it from the Store.  I'm stumped!  Anybody else figure this one out, or do we wait for Apple to discover it and release a new Mac App Store with corrected re-verification code?
    Many thanks.

Try a hard reset and go from there.

  • App launcher gone even after "killall Dock", etc

My app launcher disappeared and it will not come back even after removing the db file in ~/Library/Application Support/Dock and entering "killall Dock". The dock keeps coming back without the launcher and a new db file shows up in ~/Library/Application Support/Dock.
Tried it several times and restarted the computer.
Question: Is there anything else I can try?
(It happened after uninstalling the HP printer software that came with my old printer. No surprise that HP screwed up, given how crapy they are.  Unfortunately, installing/uninstalling printer software requires the root password - it's not a simple self-contained bubble like most apps - so who knows what damage it did.)
    Thanks in advance

Oops, never mind. Didn't realize it was just anoter app so I dragged it back to the dock.
