Most Authentic Orchestra Sampler

I am somwhat new to Logic. I'm scoring a film and don't have the time or budget for a real orchestra. However, I would like to invest in a $500-$700 range orchestra sampler. What's the best out there and what are some tips for making it sound real (as in best space designer setting etc.)

Congrats on your film score opportunity!
Yours is a hard question to answer because you haven't mentioned what style your score is going to be. Overall, are you looking for a big sound or an intimate sound? Those kinds of things... And every orchestral library will have its strengths and weaknesses.
If you want to get by on the cheap, get Garritan Personal Orchestra. $249. It's got its own learning curve (stock programs aren't velocity sensitive to volume -- you have to ride the mod wheel to control dynamics) but IMO you're not going to achieve the huge, glorious "Hollywood" string or brass ensembles from that collection.
Haven't tried it, but there's the MOTU symphonic instrument as well.
Another way to go would be get some Akai-based orchestral CD-ROMs (these can be translated into EXS24 format -- without the need for additional conversion software). Same goes for Gigasampler (to a limited extent). Some of these CD-ROMs are relatively inexpensive. So right off the bat you have the Peter Seidlaczek stuff, Kirk Hunter, and other string libraries to choose from.

  • What Orchestral samples for EXS?

I am looking for a decent but simple set of orchestral samples to use for EXS to complement the existing set supplied in the LPX download. I do not intend to spend a lot of money on a complicated item of software, I already have EWQSO andfind it is too power hungry and slow to use, which inhibits the creative process. I do not want to use Kontakt, and ralise this probably limits what is available. However it would be intersting to know what others are using for EXS ?

Unfortunately the range of such orchestral Libs for EXS24 is extremely limited and basically non existant.......
Most musicians creating Orchestral Mockups in a DAW use Kontakt and any of the excellent 3rd party Libraries available... (Spitfire Audio, CineSamples, LASS etc) and/or Vienna Symphonic Libraries...
The reality is... If you don't spend the money on the right libs.. and you dont put the effort into learning/using them...  then you probably won't get the results or work flow you wish.....
However, depending on the quality of samples you need, some people use Garritan's low price Orchestral sample library.... when they cannot afford to take the Kontakt/VSL route...
    http://www.garritan.com/products/personal-orchestra-4/
.Note: EWQL Play Libs do tend to be somewhat unstable and power hungry under OS X as you have found... but can be utilized if you resort to bouncing/freezing tracks... when composing.

  • BPM 11g workspace not show user from OVD - top most authentication provider

    Hi,
We have added OVD which connected to LDAP as the top-most authentication provider for myrealm. The order of the providers are:
    (1) OVD (control Flag:SUFFICIENT)
    (2) DefaultAuthenticator(control Flag: REQUIRED)
    (3) DefaultIdentityAsserter
The users and groups from the OVD are displayed in the weblogic console and are searchable in the OEM when I want to add the user/group to the application role but not in the BPM workspace. I find a related thread:
Weblogic administrator account is inactive after enabling DB Authenticator
It seems I did the same but I am still able to login bpm workspace with weblogic id. I guess my BPM does not use OVD for the Authenticator at all and it is still using DefaultAuthenticator. Can anyone please help and let me know what I missed for the setting? Should I put DefaultIdentityAsserter to the 2nd in the provider list to solve this?
    Thanks,
    Helen

    Hi Helen
Make sure that for the second Authenticator (DefaultAuthenticator) the required Flag is SUFFICIENT. From Weblogic point of view, if it is required, this means that user should and must exist in this provider also. Since you configured external LDAP and say you have something like "mytestuser" in LDAP. I guess you already added this user "mytestuser" to the BPMWorflowAdmin role as per the forum you listed below. But this user may not and will not exist in the default authenticator. So try making it sufficient and see if that works.
As mentioned in my earlier post, I do have LDAP cconfigured to my BPM Domain and this is the first in the order of providers. I added a user from this LDAP into workflow admin role in em. I could login into bpm/workspace and see adminstrator link.

  • Best place to find the most authentic information

Best place to find the most authentic information about plans, insurance companies, eligibility, navigators and even the Exchange. Most often, people are unaware that they are eligible for government sponsored coverage and end up buying private and costly health plans. But when a resident accesses the Exchange, he is immediately informed about his eligibility and if interested, he can purchase the subsidized plan. For those who do not have access to the internet, it is the responsibility of the health Exchange to provide information to these residents through other means. Hence, those residents who previously could not purchase health policies due to lack of awareness and information, the health Exchange will prove to be a one-stop shop where they can access information, compare plans and finally purchase that suits their medical and financial needs.

    Hey Andy,
There is just as large a collection of plugins for Logic (these come in the AU or Audio Units format) as for Cubase. Anywhere you can buy recording equipment should be selling plugins too. Some free plugins (but not very useful most of the time) can be found on places like www.digitalfishphones.com or www.airwindows.com . The guy that owns AirWindows seems to basically do code copies of plugins. He's got some great free plugins. . . one of which I often use on vocals. he also has some paid plugins that are far cheaper than the competition ($60 vs. $500 for a tape emulation plugin for instance) that are VERY good.
If you're looking to buy plugins, go to www.sweetwater.com . . . or really any large pro audio retailer, but sweetwater's a good place to start. If I knew more of what you were looking for I could help guide you a bit better.
Also, if you have an ilok key you can download demos of many paid plugins and give them a test drive.

  • Orchestral Samples

I'm going to be running Logic Studio 8 on a new Macbook (after tomorrow), both for live use (using Mainstage) and recording/writing.
I'd like to get a relatively inexpensive orchestral sample library to get me started, and I've been doing a lot of research recently, finally deciding on either Garritan Personal Orchestra (GPO - £99) or Vienna Symphony Special Edition (the cut-down version, £230). Some say they prefer GPO, others Vienna SE.
My main requirements are very thick, realistic-sounding and lush ensemble strings, with a couple of articulations (legato, staccato, portamentos between notes, ideally through performance rather than having to be dialled in from a controller). I'd like to "play" these instruments using a variety of controls like velocity to trigger the different layers, modulation to control vibrate, expression pedal etc., rather than editing afterwards. I'd ideally like them fairly dry, so that I can put my own reverb on afterwards. Other good instruments like horn/flute etc. would also be appreciated, along with a good palette of other sounds.
The strings will be used for both contemporary stuff like RnB/pop/electronic, and more traditionally in film scores etc.
I'll be getting the Garritan Stradivari solo violin as well, as it sounds amazing.
So, which should I go for - the Vienna SE Standard (which has less instruments and articulations I believe, but people seem to rate its raw sound quality), or Garritan, which some people also seem to rate for its playability and ease of use.
    TIA.

This is a big area in some ways... you're asking for a lot from the low range price band of orchestral sampling. Yes, VSL SE will do many of the articulations you want, but you may need the extended edition to be sure... or you may actually be wanting the full editions of individual sections for some of these articulations (which is big bucks). So yes, you may find gaps... but without spending thousands, thats probably going to happen (without compromising quality).
The Kirk Hunter set doesn't seem to have too much info about articulations, and I certainly don't know but I would compare this carefully before making the decision. Also, a lot of this comes down to very thorough programming at the end of the day to make things convincing. If you've not done this type of thing before, be prepared - its going to take a long time with ANY orchestral set to make it sound right. And thats also about learning how to arrange properly - not writing in a way which is unnatural/unrealistic etc.
At the end of the day, listening to audio demos and others advice doesn't always help... its when you boot it up for the first time and you begin to get a sense of what it does that makes the difference. Unfortunately you can't trial this stuff. How many times have we brought sample CD's in the past based on demos, got them home and gone... "oh, this doesn't sound like it did on the demo..." All I know is I've not been disappointed by VSL SE (and I've been disappointed with a fair few things).
I wouldn't be too carried away by Kirk Hunters presence either... you can still speak to Gary Garritan on that side of things, it doesn't mean the products any good (not dissing Garritan, but it doesn't cut it anymore). As for 10.5.1 - I think its fine (I'm running 10.4.11 on my G5), but check with Time and Space who distribute them (in the UK). They're very helpful as are the Vienna team in Austria who do it well over Email.
    Choose wisely... and good luck.

  • "No Mac Can Handle" professional Orchestral sample libraries?

    Hi,
What I do: Film / TV / Ensemble composer
Sample Libraries I use: As my normal palate; Symphonic Choirs, LA Scoring Strings, Vienna Woodwinds, Project Sam Orchestral Brass, Storm Drum 2. Plus others for colour.  I WILL be expanding this in the future.
What I want: A system that will allow me to work with all these plugins (in Logic Studio), without sticking up 'Failed to process data in time' or any other errors! I need it to WORK, so I can edit and get on with composing! My current system can't even handle Symphonic Choirs, or LA Scoring Strings on their OWN!
I'm using a mix of high quality sound libraries, and I'm doing orchestral scoring, so I need something that can run ALL the sound libraries at once without falling over!
I was thinking of buying this iMac:
    2.7GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
    16GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 4x4GB
    1TB Serial ATA Drive
    AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512MB GDDR5
Someone else suggested I skip that and go for a MacPro.
Since then, on another forum I've been advised that even people running 8 Core systems have them fall over due to CPU usage spiking to 100% when JUST using LA Scoring Strings (Nothing else)!!! Obviously I'm going to be putting my system under alot more strain then that.
Some people have suggested using PC Slaves as this is apparently 'the only way' to do it without it falling over - but obviously I don't want to do that as all my software is geared for mac, and I love the operating ease!
I don't understand how the 'top' composers do it, there doesn't seem to be a system built that can handle this stuff.
HELP ME FELLOW MAC COMPOSERS - you're my only hope! Please specify what sample libraries you are using concurrently (so I can get an idea that we're trying to do the same thing), or how you have managed it!
Any help gratefully appreciated. What do I buy?!

  • Anyone have an NPiV Orchestration sample workflow?

I have a customer presentation on Wednesday.  One of their requirements is to configure NPiV and it would give us a lot of credibility if I could show that there is already some content for this.  They are using VMware, Hitachi and Brocade.  Are there any Orchestrator workflows that show NPiV configuration?  On one or several of these platforms would be ideal but not necessary.  Thanks.

    > I wear trifocals. :)
Ah, I see (well, I don't, but I understand I should consider myself lucky).
I'm using a 21" Trinitron, although probably not for much longer. I've
been staring down a "hole" of good color in the middle of the screen.
The corners got zapped by lightning in late July. So far I haven't been
able to force myself to buy something to replace this. It (umm) works,
sort of, and I have trouble throwing away something so big that still
works. I'm like Spock, staring down into my scope, searching for
    intelligent life.
And no, no real color correction work. Only on grayscales, and that's a
pretty scientific process, just using a saved curve in Photoshop (and
    some basic good judgment).

  • Getting started... orchestration and reverb

At long last, I am the proud owner of Logic Pro 7!
This program is so excellent. All the pro apps are eons above what I expected. Sculpture especially, but space designer too.
The main reason I'm posting this is for tips on getting started with the orchestral sound. I've got some orchestral sample sets, and i was hoping to get some starter tips on good reverb setups for them to get the most authentic, film-score sound i can.
Is there a site that offers downloadable space-designer IR's or other logic downloadables? presets for compressors or EQ's, etc.
I've bought Logic to score films... does anyone have any tried and true methods for orchestral setups. I'm really looking for what best string of reverbs works best, and sounds best. I've heard of using reverb on a certian section alone first, to put it in space (a small reverb on a violin section), then washing it with a hall reverb. Any recommendations? Space designer presets?
    Thanks!
    Chris

the trick is not just about reverbs, but also about attack and decay levels on your instruments and eq.
most sample libraries (including VSL) record instruments with the mikes too close to give an attack/decay and frequency response that resembles what you would hear from an actual orchestra. EWQLSO have addressed this but have other problems.
putting the instruments into a space relative to one another is certainly the key (including panning). the thing to do is to listen to a good film score, especially recorded by shawn murphy and listen to reponses of sections and individual instruments in relation to the their dynamics, note range etc and try to adjust your individual instruments to match this.
take for example a harp instrument. how would you hear a soft harp note compared to a loud harp note from the audience (or the OH stereo pair)? how do they compare to the sample instrument you've got.? for a start, from a distance the range between the 2 dynamics are much closer from far away than they are close up. the bass in the note dissapates over distance compared to the highly directional upper frequencies. the attack is not nearly as detailed over distance.
simply sticking different reverbs on or trying to find a "fix all" reverb will lead to frustration in my opinion. you need to do a lot of judicious placing, adjusting of attack and decay, and especially pulling out bass and lower mids. maybe even lifting the the upper mids a bit to give some clarity, all to push the instrument back into the hall. this will stop the muddying effect you get from using samples and leave space for your basses and cellos and other instruments that need to be heard in the bass spectrum.
so, a brief and basic setup might look like:
strings (ie all of them seperated NOT a pad and all adjusted individually) to bus 1 -> a little reverb
winds (likewise) bus 2 -> a little lower mid taken out, a bit more reverb.
brass (as with winds) bus 3 -> maybe eq'd a bit further than the winds and a bit more reverb as well.
percussion, bus 4 -> generally, because they are very loud instruments, they have been recorded at a respectable distance and sound right uneq'd. the timp is a different matter though, depends on what samples you are using.
piano & harp bus 5 -> have similar issues as one another and can be bussed with the percussion or on their own.
the advantage of doing things this way is that it makes mixing really easy because sections are often doing things together.
you rightly pointed out that you should have a reverb for the entire band to put them all into the same space. currently i still favour my outboard lexicon rather than space designer but it is absolutely brilliant. i sometimes use it as part of eq process for example with the brass or the percussion. but in the end i generally prefer it without. often less is more, and that is certainly true of reverb.

  • Orchestra Instruments for GB3 on Intel

Alas, Garritan Personal Orchestra is dead on my Intel iMac using GB3. This will give me some time to explore other possibilities. Has anyone used or heard a demo of ClassicalBoomBox?
Besides JamPack 4, which sounds awful, does anyone know of any orchestral sample packs that will work with GB3 on Intel? I do not want ANYTHING that relies on Native Instruments software.
    Thanks!

As one who engages in the dramatic arts, I know when I am being melodramatic. I do not use the term "awful" just to exclamate my point. The samples were so bad on JP4 that I made a comparitive analysis with Garritan Personal Orchestra at the link below. You will notice that JP4 is very harsh and each instrument comes in subito as if the bowing or breath was to make each song pesante in style. What if I wanted to do it legato? • ADF and EJB. Why so little samples / information

    Hi All,
I was wondering if other JDev / ADF developers have the same feeling as me in regards to ADF / EJB.
There is barely enough information and examples on using ADF with EJB. Seems that most examples and blogs are related to BC instead.
I was reading an article (sorry, don't have the link to it) not long ago that an Oracle Executive was asked if BC or EJB was Oracle's future and EJB was the answer. However, that doesn't seem to be the what most blogs and sample are about.
I know that BC has tight integration with ADF, but it's not a standards based back-end framework. We are locked in the ADF UI for all of our development, but not touching BC at all. All code is EJB compliant.
    So, my request is:
    - comments? do other developers out there feel the same way?
    - bloggers, the great articles from "Frank Nimphius" and "Andrejus Baranovskis", not to mention others, can you guys post a little more on using ADF with EJB?
BTW: great article on that "http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/jdev/tips/fnimphius/ControlHintsWithPojos/controlHintsWithPojos.html" (How-to find and set control hints on POJO entities in bean Data Controls)
    Thanks and Regards
    Jonny Oenning

    Hi!
I rised this issue long time ago - with TP3 I noticed regression in EJB/JPA support with ADFm (binding layer as referred by Shay). Following the development, I draw this conclusions:
    1. Oracle is oriented toward J2EE standards, including the strategic orientation to EJB/JPA. The team that managed JDev 11g initial development phases was oriented toward EJB (but was replaced/fired sometime between TP2 and TP3).
    2. Oracle decided that FMW 11g stack products as well as EBS migration from PL/SQL to EJB is not feasible in short time frame (I think that was poor judgment). So, the BCs got the push over the EJB and TP3/4 was biased toward BCs. Even the default Fusion technology stack is changed - in TP1/2 the Fusion Web project was ADF RC + EJB buy default and then changed to ADF RC + BC4J. Also the development guides were "rephrased".
    3. As BC4J are proprietary Oracle technology, the are lacking many J2EE standard features and many strong points of the modern multi-tier architecture. Many developers are witnessing the performance / scalability issues as the BC4J are basically a mutant: they are SQL based concept wrapped into EJB for deployment! But they are not relaying on proven scalable J2EE technologies (like JPA/JTA, object caching etc.). They are trying to reinvent the wheel, decalratively offering the heaven of J2EE multi-tear architecture to old fashion SQL-focused architects/developers. But it is just a marketing - the truth is that BC4J are not and cannot be the replacement for proven J2EE architecture. They are trying to mimic the concepts of J2EE (like object-entity mapping, like JTA/JPA, like scalability and caching, transparent web-services exposition etc.) but they are lagging behind even J2EE 1.4 and we are facing the J2EE 6 in few months!
    4. Oracle is aware that EJB is the future but they are trying to bridge the gap between their legacy code written mainly in PL/SQL. So they developed and they are developing the JDeveloper 11g in fashin that should support and serve for their primary goals - migration of their own old PL/SQL based products to new, J2EE, world (of BEA!).
So, anyone who is expecting the that Oracle JDeveloper is what they are marketing (full scale J2EE IDE) - is going to waste some time and money waiting the Oracle to finish it's half-way migration from PL/QL and Forms/Reports to PL/SQL + ADF RC! In few years from now.
Thus, if you need efficiency in J2EE standards development - try something else than JDeveloper. Or, as suggested by Shay, don't use overmarketed ADFm as it is not compatible with EJBs in scalable / clustered deployment! Yes, that is proven issue (but I wont elaborate here as it is already well elaborated in this forum in another tread but the Oracle guys wisely neglected that issue).
And beside few very very old and for me useless blog entries (one of which is not working in 11g as you may read in comments) there will be no much support for EJBs in this release of JDeveloper - I can bet!
But, as final message to the public, I'm still stuck with JDev and EJBs as. When you develop you own patterns, it is still the best combination for developing the scalable, high performance apps on Oracle FMW 11g platform - mandatory including several grid technologies that are making the difference in scalability of true J2EE apps and quasi-J2EE "Fusion" apps based on BC4Js "silently" wrapped in EJBs for deployment.

  • Where can i find more information about factory sampler instruments? such as what synth was sampled, what chord has been sampled etc.

im looking for more information about what chords have been sampled for use in the exs24 "chords" sampler instruments and more specifically wether they're major/minor and with 7ths,9ths,11ths etc.  i know this could be worked out with someone with the skill to do it but unforunately that's not me. It'd be convienient if information like this was included somewhere in the documentation like it is with most other commercial sample packs.

Don't post order information or other personal information here. We're all just fellow users here - you are not communicating with Apple when you post here - and so posting such information just risks your privacy. I've asked the Hosts to remove all the private information from your post.
The serial number was included in the box ARD came in; the Apple Store will not have a record of it. If you've lost the serial number, you'll need to purchase a new copy of ARD, probably a good idea anyway since 2.2 won't run on any version of Mac OS X since, if memory serves, 10.4. It's a lot cheaper through the Mac App Store than it was back when you first purchased.

  • Where can I find a sophisticated sample app (from open source or oracle)?

I am looking for open-source or Oracle's sample applications that uses most if not all of the features in Oracle Appserver 10.1.3. Most of existing sample applications I found under the 'sample applications' link are for older version of Oracle AS, and not compatible with 10.1.3. Other requires JDeveloper, which I don't plan on using.
    Any suggestions?
    thanks,
    Henry

Henry, thanks for the feedback ... I have asked the product manager responsible for the JCA demo to take a look and update the sample. The best way to file the bug without having access to the db is tell us here. We try our best - though sometimes can't keep up - to monitor the forums, particluarly when we have a new release where lots of issues may need follow up like 10.1.3.
On the how tos that require editing the XML, normally that is because we don't have access to do the configuration in the application server control or the command line tooling. In general I recommend you use ASC console or the command line tooling - admin.client.jar or our ant tasks - for configuration as you are right that it is the most consistent and accurate way to configure the environment. This doc book gives a sense of what that tooling works for:
    http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25221_03/web.1013/b14432/admin.htm#sthref68
    including ant tasks:
    http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25221_03/web.1013/b14431/anttasks.htm#sthref164
However, unlike the previous release of OAS where editing the XML files often had unexpected consequences on other instances in the cluster because of a central managed repository concept that the older release had, in 10.1.3 that concept is no longer there so editing the XML files generally works fine both in stand-alone and managed. Again, in general we recommend using the tooling but my guess is if you have found a how to that requires editing the XML files, I suspect the tooling doesn't support it yet.
Out of curiousity, I would be also interested in which one you found that had that - was it the JCA one again?
    Mike.

  • Sample Sweeping Audio Frequency

I am able to do the harmonic analyzer on a specific frequency but wanted to get input on two things:
Analyzing a sweeped signal (say an audio range of 20Hz to 20kHz) - Do most programs just sample every few periods  within the file and then analyze the next?
How do programs do "real-time" analysis.  I assume there is some sort of aperture time of sampling so sample every 1 second of data?  In addition, I have only devised a way to analyze a wav file (converted to an array).  Is it possible to do "real-time" sampling from the incoming audio?

    Hi ngay528,
Essentially, you can't do a THDN analysis on a signal with a continuously changing frequency, as by definition, THDN required one fundamental frequency to get any useful information on it.  In order to get proper data from a THDN the best option is to acquire your data in chunks at discrete, or stepped frequencies.  If you know where these frequency changes are occurred you can then perform a THDN on those individual chunks of data.
