Most important documentations for desktop support role.

I'd suggest that amongst many others, you need a network map, indicating how your landscape is put together. It's also worth having a patching diagram in each rack / cabinet for that location. You need to have full details on each server; especially all physical servers. It's worth detailing what services, applications, roles each server (including VMs) are hosting; along with information on any specific configuration requirements. Think of what you would need if you had to rebuild that server completely from scratch.I used to have a number of work check lists; things that would be required when performing certain tasks. These would detail the steps involved, what would be required to perform a check, and highlight any specific requirements or warnings (e.g. don't re-boot unless serviceY has been stopped first as otherwise it might take...

Hi guys!
I have joined a company newly and also just starting my career. My company barely has  documentation for tasks and troubleshooting issues and i have been working on creating them lately. I would like to know what are the best and most required documentations for a desktop support or IT support role. e.g New system installations, Configuration documents for basic tasks,.....e.t.c.
Please share your knowledge.....

My time machine back up does not appear to back up documents and e mails (the most important things for me). How do I get this done?

How do you know it's not backing up those things? To check documents, go in the Finder to your documents folder, then go to the Time Machine icon in your menubar and click Enter Time Machine. Scroll back through time and see if previous versions of the documents exist in the backups.
For Mail, same thing. Open the Mail app, go into Time Machine in the same way, and scroll back. Your inbox should change to reflect how it looked when it was backed up.

  • I just find out many images missing from my most important project for no reason and don´t know what to do!

I was checking my SDHC cards to see which ones had already been downloaded to my computer and sudenly after I inserted one of the cards an anouncement poped out telling me Aperture had trouble importing many files... since this card had already been downloaded in one of my projects and had been working on some of the pictures I did not mind and took the card out and formated it in my camera (as I said before all the pictures had been downloaded before!) and I went to work on Apperture. When I opened the project I was going to work in I found lots of pictures missing!
I don´t know how to recover this pictures or if it can be done!
This is my most important project to date!
I will greatly appreciate any help.

    Hello Léonie,
I will try to be more specific:
I inserted my memory card and opened Aperture. I Pressed import and chose an existing project as a destination after choosing only the pictures I wanted to keep for imediate use (done this same precedure before). The importing procedure started and everything was "normal" but the "procesing" indicator (the spinning circle in the low left corner) never stoped (even the day after) so I quit Aperture, turned of my computer and took out the memory card.
Later I restarted my computer, oppened Aperture and saw all the pictures I wanted there, I even made versions and worked on some of them and everything was fine so far... The big problem came when I was cheking my memory cards -days later- to erase some of them for reuse and to make a back up copy of the full card in a diferent folder on the desktop of my computer (as I told before In Aperture only downloaded some pictures) and inserted the card that presented the continus "procesing" inconvinience: Somehow it created a link to Aperture and a notification poped telling me that some files where unable to download...
Since I had already seen and worked with the files in Aperture I thought the message was a mistake (the files had been imported ok before!) so I took out the card and reformated it in my camera (BIG MISTAKE!) and for my surprise when I wanted to work with this files and their versions and opened Aperture all of them were gone as If they had never been imported!
I opened the back up folder on my desktop just to find none of the files was saved there even though the downloading had run fine...
I tried to restore my Aperture library from Time Machine this morning but I think I made another BIG MISTAKE when answered to replace my library instead of keeping both... I found some files replaced, none of the diferent versions I had done, some files missing, some foulty tumbnails and God knows what else...
I´m very frustrated and disapointed and don´t know if there is anything I can still do to recover my files...
I don´t know if I should blame Apple´s Aperture or the card´s manufacturer for the origin of this problem but how can I trust my work to this combination of factors?
Thanks for your concern Léonie and have a good new year!

  • Documentation for PI ABAP roles

    Hi all,
is there a general documentation for the PI ABAP roles? I assume something like that:
    - User should access J2EE Adapter Engines / SOAP Adapter (used for sending a Webservice to PI from a 3rd Party Application) --> necessary role abc
    - User should be able to process Alerts in Alert Inbox --> necessary role def
    - User should be able to create repository objects --> necessary role ghi
    - User should be able to create scenario objects in intergration directory --> necessary role jkl
What I still don't know which ABAP role is used for which purpose. We'd like to assign minimal roles to the users.

  • 3 most important tests for a new MacBook Pro?

What are the 3 most important tests that one should do regularly on a fine machine like the Macbook Pro?
    thanks a lot!

But in the spirt of tests you do want to use the disk utility to repair/verify the permissions.
I do this prior to installing anything and after...
you know, you really don't need to repair permissions anymore, unless you experience problems. Even after applying an update from apple, its not needed. At this stage of the OS, its more of a myth that you need to repair permissions.

  • Never missed an update, but I did with iOS 7.06 !! the most important one for security !!

I have not upgraded to iOS 7.06, i immediately upgraded to iOS 7.1, all features in the new update is great, but there is a lack of clarity in Safari browser in iOS 7.1 ; There is no longer "private browsing" feature ; can not clear history. My question is : Have i lost protection "SSL" in Safari browser when I did not update for iOS 7.06 ?? Do I have to go back to update it again ?? Or that it has addressed automatically in this latest update iOS 7.1 ?? Thank you

The register did an article on the SSl bug,as did many others.
    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/02/25/apple_mac_os_x_10_9_2_ssl/
Near the end of this article is a link to gottofail.com.
Use that link got test your browser for the correct working of SSL. This article was about the OS X problem but the link will test IOS also.
I would be surprised if it fails.

  • Why a smartphone is the most important tool for today's travellers

If the term “never leave home without it” applied to any one material item or product, it would have to be the smartphone. Some estimates suggest the average user looks at their smartphone screen as many as 1,500 times per week. Travelling without a handset in tow seems to be getting increasingly difficult, simply because of everything it can do. From taking photos at some exotic locale, uploading them to Instagram and messaging friends and family back home, the smartphone is a versatile tool anywhere and everywhere.

When going to the USA.... also consider "Roam Mobility".  It's a Vancouver company who created a great package for Canadians travelling to the states.

  • Most important SSD Benchmark factor for 4k footage

I still editing fullHD footage but will soon be working with 4k files. I read this compansion and was wondering which test factors are most Important Next to Read and write.
UserBenchmark: Samsung 850 Pro 256GB vs SanDisk Extreme 240GB
    Thanks for help

Most any current generation SSD will do scorching fast reads. The most important factor for Adobe Premiere Pro use is large file uncompressed write speed.
A few excellent drives for Adobe include:
    - Crucial M500, M550 (great for the price and have good write performance)
    - Samsung 830, 840 Pro, 850 Pro (stay away from 840 non-pro and EVO as they are weak for large uncompressed file writes)
    - Intel 730 (were very $$$ when introduced, but prices are way less now and these are very good drives)
You did not mention what type of 4k files, and that makes a huge difference. Highly compressed formats don't tax the drives that much (GoPro, Sony AX100, GH4, etc.) whereas any 4k uncompressed, Red 4k and larger, etc. will be pushing quite a bit more MB/s.
I'm sure there are others, but these models seem to be the most popular amongst hardware forum users.

    Jim

  • Creative Cloud for Desktop app Launch at login (solved)

I’ve had an issue with Creative Cloud for Desktop app (using Windows 8.1 Update 1 x64) – regardless of what has been set on my Preferences > General Tab > Launch at login, my app didn’t start at logon (system startup).
    I’ve tried:
uncheck the ‘Launch at login’ option (Preferences > General Tab). Restart PC. Launch the CC app, check ‘Launch at login’. Restart. Didn’t help.
uncheck the ‘Launch at login’ option (Preferences > General Tab). Restart PC. Remove the startup Key from registry stored under: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]. Restart. Launch the CC app, check ‘Launch at login’. Restart. Didn’t help.
reinstall Creative Cloud for desktop app. Didn’t help.
rename the OPM.db file (as described here: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/apps-panel-reflect-creative-cloud.html). Didn’t help.
Finally - since the CC app is actually and x86 application - I’ve moved the startup entry from the x64 Run Key [Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run] into the common x86 [Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run].
    Simply:
    a. Remove:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "Adobe Creative Cloud"="\"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Adobe\\Adobe Creative Cloud\\ACC\\Creative Cloud.exe\" --showwindow=false --onOSstartup=true"
    a. Create:
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "Adobe Creative Cloud"="\"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Adobe\\Adobe Creative Cloud\\ACC\\Creative Cloud.exe\" --showwindow=false --onOSstartup=true"
And you know what? it woooorks!!! Now my app starts with windows!
I'm sharing this in case someone else has run into the same problem.

  • What is most important - processor speed, RAM or flash storage?

My son is in the 9th grade and I'm about to buy a Macbook Air for him.  I have a limited amount of money to spend, and I'd like to get the best value for my dollar.  He will primarily use it in school, for homework, surfing the web, social media, watching videos (not making) and downloading music.  He ocasionally downloads movies, but not often at all.  The most important factor for him is speed.  He is an impatient downloader and web surfer, so the quicker the better for him.  Given this profile, does he need the i7 processor, or will the i5 suffice?  4 GB or RAM, or do I need to bump up to 8GB?  Can I get by with 128 GB of Flash storage, or will that slow the system down too much and I need to go with 256GB?  I'm just not in a position to spend $1800 on a computer.  Also, when he graduates from high school, then buying an upgraded machine is definitely an option, I'm just trying to get him through high school with the needs he has now.
    Thanks!

The larger SSD are up to 400MBs faster due to SSD densities.
however any macbook needs an external HD for large media storage and necessary data redundancy / backups.
128GB is plenty for most everyone,  you need an external HD regardless,  NO SSD is big enough to be used as a mass storage device.
    see here:
Solid State Drive usage premise, or the “more space / upgrade SSD” question
There have been questions posed and positions taken by many people who are trying to use their Macbook Air or Pro’s solid state drive (SSD) as a mass media storage device, for either pictures, videos, massive music collections or all three combined; but this should not be the working premise of a ‘limited’ SSD and its use.
In which, it’s the case of those users with either 128GB, 256GB, or even 512GB of internal SSD space, that have or are running “out of space”, that questions are raised. The immediate premise of some users can sometimes be “(how to / if) upgrading my SSD” when in fact in nearly all instances another approach is the logical and sensible one that needs to be looked into and exercised.
Any Macbook containing a SSD should be idealized as a ‘working platform’ notebook containing all your applications, documents, and weekly or bi-weekly necessary files. All collections of media files such as pictures, music, and videos, unless directly needed should be kept off the notebook and on an external hard drive or likewise. While the ‘working platform’ premise is also the case with larger internal conventional hard drives of 1TB+, its implementation isn't as critical except in terms of data protection.
Realistically, you should at most coordinate roughly 20 to 25% of your total SSD space to all audio-video personal use media (picture / music / video collections), leaving the remaining amount on an external HD.
Nobody should consider any notebook a data storage device at any time under any circumstance, rather a data creation, sending, and manipulation device; and in the case of a SSD, this is more important for purposes of having sufficient working space on the SSD and reducing SSD ‘bloat’ in which cases someone is wrongly attempting to use the SSD space as a large media storage nexus.
The rare exception to the collective usage and premise of SSD use in which a much larger SSD is truly needed are for those in video and photography professions that require both the extremely fast speeds of the SSD and the onboard storage for large and or many video and photography files. However this also falls under the premise of a ‘working platform’ for such peoples rather than the intent of many who are using the SSD as passive and static data storage for media files very infrequently needed or accessed.
All on-notebook data collections should be logically approached as to necessity, and evaluated as to whether it is active or passive data that likely doesn’t need to be on the notebook, allocations of space-percentages to as-needed work and use, apportioning space for your entertainment media, and questioning whether it should it be on the notebook for more than short-term consumption.
Considerations should be made in the mind of any user in differentiating the necessary system data (System hub) comprising the Mac OSX, applications, necessary documents that both must and should be on your internal SSD, and that of the users personal data (Data hub) comprising created files, pictures, music, videos, PDF files, data created or being created and otherwise, that likely unless being used soon or often should be parked on an external hard drive for consumption, or temporarily loading onto the internal SSD.
You both can and should purchase whichever SSD size you need or see fit, but even in the case of the largest of SSD, unless use-considerations are made, and SSD spaces are allocated as should be the case indicated above, one can easily and immediately run into this quandary of “needing more internal SSD space”, in which instance a different approach in usage must then be implemented.
However it is almost always the case, that such large media files are wanted to be stored internally rather than actually needed, in which case the external HD is both prudent as well as necessary. Additionally costs per MB are infinitely less on an external HD than an internal SSD in any consideration of data expansion needs.
    A Professional Example
In the case of a Macbook Air or Macbook Pro Retina with ‘limited’ storage on the SSD, this distinction becomes more important in that in an ever rapidly increasing file-size world, you keep vital large media files, pics, video, PDF collections, music off your SSD and archived on external storage, for sake of the necessary room for your system to have free space to operate, store future applications and general workspace.
You should also never be put in the position of considering “deleting things” on your Macbook SSD in order to ‘make space’. This is especially what your external HD is for.
Professionals who create and import very large amounts of data have almost no change in the available space on their notebooks internal SSD because they are constantly archiving data to arrays of external or networked HD.
Or in the case of the consumer this means you keep folders for large imported or created data and you ritually offload and archive this data for safekeeping, not only to safeguard the data in case your Macbook has a SSD crash, or gets stolen, but importantly in keeping the ‘breathing room’ open for your notebook to operate, expand, create files, add applications, for your APPS to create temp files, and for general operation.
Slim USB3 1TB external hard drive
    External Hard Drives
External hard drives are both extremely cheap and regardless of the size of your internal SSD (or even internal hard drive if the case), you need an external hard drive with your SSD equipped Macbook for several reasons:
    1. Data backup and protection.
    2. Redundancy for important data.
    3. Necessitated ideal space for large media files for collections of pictures, videos, and music etc.
While ever changing in price, typical portable 2.5” external hard drives in USB3 run roughly $65 for 1TB or $120 for 2TB small portable USB3 hard drives. Such drives range in thickness between 5mm and 15mm, with recent improvements in storage of 500GB drives in 5mm profiles.
There is almost no premise in which a small 12mm thick 1 Terabyte USB hard drive cannot be taken along with any Macbook as an external large storage extension inside any Macbook carry case or pouch. Typically such external HD profiles are not much bigger than a deck of cards.
External hard drives are a foregone necessity for purchase with any Macbook for at the very least Time Machine backups, data redundancies, and ideally for large media storage.

The link I gave you is an article on getting your raw files to open in Camera Raw. Did you read it? I lazily gave you the link because this is one of the most common problems in this forum, and I get tired of saying the same thing over and over again. I could break it down for your specific case, but I was hoping you could read through the article and work it out for yourself.
    But, here goes:
Your cameras are newer than your raw converter, so it won't understand them.
CS5 comes with Camera Raw 6, which can only be upgraded as far as 6.7.1. You can find out which version of Camera Raw you are running in three ways: in the settings title bar (Cmd-K), in the plug-in title bar (press F to start/stop full-screen mode to reveal the title bar), or Photoshop's Help menu (About Plug-ins).
Downloading raw files from newer Nikon cameras with old versions of Nikon Transfer will actually make them unreadable in Adobe software. They can be fixed with a free utility. Again, it's all in the linked article. You should be using up-to-date Nikon Transfer, or Adobe Photodownloader to avoid this problem.
All being well, you have good raw files on your computer. You can convert them to dng using Adobe DNG Converter. IF you are on OSX Leopard or Snow Leopard, you CAN'T use the latest version, because Adobe stopped support. But, if you ARE on a later OSX, you can download DNG Converter 8.6.
DNG Converter is designed to convert FOLDERS of raw files at a time. You select a folder of raw files, and tell it to create DNG copies. BUT, you have to set up the converter before you start using it...
If you load up DNG Converter, you'll notice a button labelled "Change Preferences". Clicking this, you'll see the first option is "Compatibility". Here, you must select the appropriate setting for the version of Camera Raw you HAVE (see above). If you can't work this out, just pick "Camera Raw 5.4 and later". THEN pick a folder of raw files and convert them to DNGs.
All the above is already in the article, but I gave you a personalised response. If you still can't get it to work, please give us more than one sentence. Tell us exactly what you tried, and describe exactly what happened. Which version of OSX you're running, what device and software you downloaded your raw files with, how you used DNG Converter, and so on.
I really should be in bed.
