Most of my emails have disappeared from mail Inbox

Hello, last night my emails in my Mail inbox disappeared. I didn't notice at first because the last 10 days are still there, but then I realised that 4 years of email from 1 Nov 2012 up to 2008 (around 20,000 messages) are gone. There are a few for 2008 and then the rest  - I had emails back to 2005 have also disappeared.
I am not aware of having done anything different last night - all I did was check my mail as usual -  and it was only when I tried to search for an email that I realised my inbox now contains only 300 emails. When I go to iCloud it is the same story. Only 303 emails in my inbox. Trash only contains a few hundred, so its like these emails all just disappeared into the ether
I have no idea what to do or how this happened or what might have caused it. I run Lion 10.7.4 on an old black Macbook and have not installed anything new or upgraded software. I don't download unusual attachments so doubt it is a virus.
Is there any way to try to recover them - my inbox is my filing system so years of important stuff is missing. Any help would be very much appreciated.
thanks

  • HT2497 I am finding that emails are disappearing from my Inbox without explanation.  Can anyone suggest what the problem might be?

I am finding that emails are disappearing from my inbox without explanation.  Has anyone any ideas what might be causing this?

I found a fix elsewhere for Mail.app.  I had to remove every sub-folder under INBOX (I moved them to a local folder) and then used the MAILBOX -> REBUILD command on INBOX.  It worked, but now I don't have any of the sub-folders.
I am very disappointed with Apple.  I should never have to do that.  Tens of Billions of dollars in cash, just lying around, and they can't be bothered to make the most basic (and central)  of applications work.

  • Once again, my .mac aliases have disappeared from Mail.... Arghhh! help?

Once again, with no warning, all my .mac aliases have disappeared from the dropdowns in my Mail app (OS 10.4.11). They still exist in .mac/mobile me webmail, and in Mail i'm still receiving emails addressed to them. But I can't reply to these emails with the alias, nor create new emails with aliases.
I have tried Sync-ing with the site- i recollect that has worked in the past, but now no change. i have tried adding the aliases in with commas after the primary address in Preferences (as is suggested in KB below), but it does not work- and the next time Prefs is open, they are gone. In Mail preferences, the account is listed as ".mac", which is listed in the KB as one of the correct types (the other being imap).
I use my .mac aliases a lot, and have for years. i do NOT like or want to go to .mac/me Webmail to be able to use them. i do NOT want to change them to .me addresses/aliases. I can't stand how they just randomly come and go as far as being available as dropdowns in Mail... what the heck is up with Apple? i'm paying $100 for these kinds of services (excuse me, $99) and they can't keep a few aliases available to their own app (Mail)? If they weren't so deeply embedded in my business uses, i'd ditch the whole thing.
Anyway, enuf ranting; does anyone know the solution or work-around? Nothing in the below KB worked for me, even tho it is supposed to.
    the non-helpful KB: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2296

If your aliases are disappearing after you enter them, that would indicate that your Mail preferences file has become corrupted. The only solution for that is to delete the com.apple.mail.plist file in Home/Library/Preferences, then restart Mail and setup your account(s) again.
However, before you do that, you must remove all your mail account folders that being with "IMAP-"; otherwise you'll create more problems for yourself. Those are located in Home/Library/Mail.

    ? HELP! J
    Mafuto

I found the answer myself - just reinstall the App from the Blackberry web site, and overwrite the existing one when it tells you it is the same version.
Somehow, it reacts with the phone and puts it all back the way it should have been.

  • Aliases have disappeared from Mail and I am left with one email address!!

For no apparent reason all my email aliases have gone and I have the choice of one!
Does anyone know how I can retrieve them?
    Thanks,

Take a look in your Preferences>Accounts>Advanced to make sure the "Enabled" option hasn't been unchecked. That might cause the problem. Mine occasionally go awol and checking Enabled usually solves the problem.

  • 3,000 emails just disappeared from Mail: help!

I installed 10.6.1 a week ago on my MacBook Pro (2.5 Ghz Intel Core Duo). There's 50gig of hard drive space free.
I looked in the Sent section yesterday and about 50 emails were logged as sent Today. Most of these were in fact written maybe 2-3 years ago. Weird -- and frustrating. (Last year under Leopard I noticed that a big chunk of sent emails had the wrong year: they all had different months and days but the year was 2008 instead of say 2006 or 2007. I did nothing about it at the time as I thought I could live with this.)
There were about 3,500 emails in the Sent section yesterday. Today there are just 300!
I went on to my me.com account to find that the title of the web page reads "MobileMe Mail - 3529 messages, 25 unread" -- and I can only seem to view these 25.
What can I do to get Mail working again properly?
    Thanks! Chris

An addition to my above post... [I'm referring to the Mail 4.1 application by the way]
The only emails that remain in my Sent folder are the ones I sent Today, plus 1 from August (which I think is one which always used to appear FIRST when I switch to the Sent folder before it displayed the 3,500 other ones which were sent before and after it. (It had a few attachments.) Then a set of emails from Feb 6, 2008 to April 18 2008. A total, as I said, of about 350 emails. The other 3,000 have now disappeared but are still on the Mail application at me.com.
Both dates are interesting: I started using Mail around Feb 6 2008. Before that I sent maybe 2,000 emails via the web-based mail program at mac.com.
Around April 18 2008 I bought a new MacBook Pro, and used Apple's migration software to move all the applications and data from my old laptop to my new laptop before I started using the new laptop.
    Hope all that helps!
    Chris

  • My iCloud mailboxes have disappeared from Mail.app (10.6.8)...

...yet "Window->Connection Doctor" states that "Connection and login to server succeeded.", and I'm still above to view my mail via icloud.com and via my iPod touch and iPad (both 5.1.1); I've been experiencing this problem for more than twenty-four hours now - anybody have any idea what's going on?

Yeah, I've read those threads where I thought the poster might be experiencing the same error as myself - however, none of the posters of those threads are experiencing the same error as myself, and I began experiencing the error early (GMT) on the 16th.

  • My notes have disappeared from Mail

Suddenly all of the Notes in my Mail app are gone. They are not in Mail's Trash. I imported User/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/notes.mbox & there's exactly one note in there. What could have happened? I didn't have Time Machine running - I'm trying to get them off my CrashPlan backup, but this is scary. Where are all my notes?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
On OS X Mountain Lion, Notes is a separate app and it's not on Mail app

  • A whole batch (many months) of emails have disappeared from inbox

They tried the "repair folder" option and it didn't help.
They do frequent manual backups by copying the Profiles folder to another disk. Can that be used somehow to restore the missing messages, perhaps by restoring the applicable file? (How to determine which file to restore? They have about 3-4 email accounts in Tbird).
    Thx.

I have this problem plus I don receive emails at all.
Correction: I think I do receive emails but they do not come to my Mozilla thunderbird screen.

  • Groups have disappeared from Mail

  • TS3899 Why do my emails keep disappearing from my iphone?  These are emails that I have not deleted.

My emails keep disappearing from my inbox even though I have not deleted them.

I have tried to rebuild the mailbox to no avail.  The mailbox behavior says:  Drafts (not checked) store draft messages on the server, Notes (checked) show not in Inbox, Sent (checked) Store sent messages on the server Delete sent messages when (option never selected), Junt (not checked) store junk messages on the server Delete junk messages when (option never selected), Trash (checked) moves deleted messages to the Trash mailbox and (checked)  store deleted messages on the server Permanently erase deleted messages when (one month old option selected).
I have not set up any rules that I know of other than a signature, in the very least I have not changed any.

  • Some emails missing from Mail InBox

All emails received in Mail, version 3.6 (936) between 6:57pm 8 August and 6:15pm 10 August (around 30 messages) have disappeared from my Inbox at some time in the afternoon of 10 August. (I don't suspect the timings are significant, I'm just being specific.) I did not delete them, accidentally or otherwise. They have not moved to any other folder. Account type is POP.
I have followed all recovery procedures listed at: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1907, but nothing has worked. The messages were still on my ISPs server so I have been able to retrieve them on my MacBook.
    Questions:
    • Is there any known reason for this problem?
    • Any way to prevent it recurring?
    • Is there some way I can retrieve the lost messages from my ISP into Mail on my iMac?
    • Is there any way to import only the missing messages into Mail on my iMac from Mail on my MacBook?
    • How can I inform Apple of this problem by email?

Ok....now when I reply to something from my Mail....my phone is sending another reply to the recipient...except blank. Grrrr.
