Most of my music won't play, and the songs have exclamation points.

I upgraded my itunes, and now most of the music won't play, and they have exclamation points next to them. When I click on a song, it says "original file cannot be found" I clicked on locate, but I couldn't find it anywhere. Any suggestions?

Hello, I too had this same problem. I was very lazy about going through EACH song trying to select & fish for it in a folder (I have a lot of folders total of 1,979 songs). I called Apple & they told me to go to my iTunes go to FILE scroll down then ADD FOLDER.. Since everything was just out of place & didn't know where to even begin I basically deleted ALL songs from my LIBRARY & then added each folder. It literally took me less than 20 minutes. Dont worry if you have your songs labeled a certain way (Artist, name of song, genre in iTunes) everything will go back to normal. Hope this helps as it helped me! I put it aside for 2-3 years! Good luck!

  • Itunes progress bar is not moving and music won't play. I also have no audio from my laptop at all. Any ideas? I am running windows 8.

Have had no previous problems with iTunes but for past two weeks my I tunes progress bar is not moving and music won't play.
I also have no audio from my laptop at all. Any ideas? I am running windows 8.

I'm having the same incredibly frustrating problem. I have 50-60 GBs of music and now literally ALL OF A SUDDEN most of my mp3s won't play in iTunes. Of the songs that do play, many of them sound garbled (almost as if you were listening to them underwater). As others have noted, the songs do in fact play properly in other media players (VLC, MPC, WMP, etc).
I feel like I've tried just about everything but I can't seem to fix the problem. Nor have I been able to find any viable solutions after hours of scouring the internet. Here is a list of the steps I've taken so far, in chronological order:
    1. Closed/re-opened iTunes
    2. Re-booted computer
    3. Uninstalled/re-installed iTunes
    4. Tried deleting songs from iTunes library and then re-adding them, but after dropping files into the library they don't show up at all, iTunes refuses to import them
    5. Downgraded from iTunes 8 to iTunes 7
None of these things have helped at all and I am amazed that even after completely uninstalling iTunes 8 and then installing version 7 I'm still experiencing the same problem. And, on top of things, I've found that iTunes 7 is not recognizing the ID3 tags for many of the songs it does import.
My apologies for the length of this post. I just want to be specific and provide as much info as I can so that maybe we can find a solution to this thing.
So, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • HT1296 I recently purchased songs from my iphone.  All good...  But I then went to put them on my ipod touch.  They seemed to have downloaded but the songs wont play and the song title/the text, appears in a grey colour.

I recently purchased songs from my iphone.  All good...  But I then went to put them on my ipod touch.  They seemed to have downloaded but the songs wont play and the song title/the text, appears in a grey colour and there is a downlaod symbol in front of the song title.  what do i do next??  They play on my iphone and from the itunes library but not from my ipod touch.

If the songs are still on your ipod, make sure autosync is disabled in iTunes on your computer, connect and right click on it in the device list, then choose "transfer purchases" to copy all bought media and apps from your ipod to your computer.
If the songs are not on your computer and got deleted from your ipod as well, you can't get them back, unless you have a backup of your iTunes library as part of your computer backup.

I wish I could help. There are numerous threads about missing music but last I looked, no solution. You might want to read through them anyway.

  • Music won't play and shuts down. Helppppp

Randomly my ipod music won't play music. When the song is clicked on it goes to the song and album artwork but then doesn't play and flashes back to the playlist screen. Also, it shuts down a lot and I have to restart it to turn it back on. This seems to happen whenever I am using it and set it down instead of just bringing the black screen up where I can press the button and start it I have to restart it which is slow.  Help please!!!!

    Try the following in order:
    - Reset:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore the iPod from backup via iTunes on yur computer
    - Restore the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod.

  • HT1567 I have the volume control symbol in the center of my iPad all of the time.  My music will not play and the volume remains off.  When I try to increase the volume manually it statics and will not maintain a volume level.  Thanks

I have the volume control symbol in the enter of my iPad all of the time.  My music will not play and when I try to increase the volume manually, it statics and will not maintain a volume level.  Thanks

Try resetting the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons until the Apple Logo appears on the screen. Ignore the red slider if it shows up. You will lose no data.

same goes for me. I tried resetting the iPod and restoring it, but to no avail. I'll try other three things that I hadn`t noticed: reset my computer, try another USB port and then reinstall iPod + iTunes and reboot my computer.
try it. maybe that works for both of us. hope so.

  • I got the iphone iOS 7.1.1 update and now my music won't play and I can't download apps. Can I fix it?

When i got the update at first the music would play while my headphones were in. I restored my iphone and now it won't play at all. I have tried to go in the settings for itunes and app store but it also won't load.

    Hi Jackson,
Since you have already done a restore of your iPhone, I would suggest that you now try restoring your iPhone to factory settings, set it up again and test before you restore your content. This article describes the process -
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
Note - It is important that you follow this stop:
Use iTunes to back up your device and transfer and sync any additional content to your computer.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

Try to set it up as new device without using the latest backup, explained here:
How to back up your data and set up as a new device
Has the device been jailbroken by the former owner? If yes, your problems could be a result of that:

    1. Open Activity Monitor.app (Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor.app)
    2. Select ‘All Processes’ from the drop down menu next to the search bar (called ‘Filter:’) and type in ‘coreaudio’.
    3. Select the process name and click the ‘Quit Process’ button at the top. Chose 'Quit' or 'Force Quit' from the resulting dialogue box.
    Any improvement?

  • Music won't play and is flashing?

My iPhone is flashing and generally acting strange. I have noticed since trying to play music - the screen is jumping around/flashing and flicking from song to song?

Yes, as a matter of fact I did.  Hopefully it will work for you and others as well.  The trick is you must have a backup dated before you did the update.
I fixed it reliably with these steps below (on both my iPad retina lte 3rd gen and my iPhone 4S):
    1. Have a backup dated BEFORE the update (preferrably by several days).
    2. Apply the update to 6.0.1
    3. Observe your music not playing for unknown reasons.
    4. Do not break your device in frustration or switch to Android.
    5. Restore your iThingy using the backup you made prior to applying the update in step 2.
    6. Your music should now play, after it finishes downloading.
Note that I did this all over the iCloud.  I have not tried it with direct or wi-fi sync.  Your mileage may vary.
    cheers,

  • All of my music that wasn't purchased from the itunes store has been faded out on my ipod, despite me being able to play them in itunes. half my songs have exclamation points but only in the 'on this ipod' section, and when i double-click no window appear

I'm freaking out because almost all my music except for those songs purchased directly from the iTunes store has been deleted from my iPod - about 35 gigs. The songs show up, but they're all faded out and unplayable from my device (I have the newest version). Exclamation points appear beside all my songs in the "On this iPod" section, and yet I can't double-click to locate the files as nothing pops up. Some of my music has a weird circle next to it and is even more faded out when I'm in the "On this iPod" section - that's been happening for a couple of days. Yesterday I tried to set my settings to sync with my library only, and it worked, but this morning everything got even worse with the rest of my songs disappearing. What's happening???? Help??

  • Tried to relocate itunes library and lost all music. Songs have exclamation point.

I tried to move my iTunes library to an external drive that did not have enough space on it. The transfer did not complete. Now I cannot play any of my music. There is an exclamation point next to each song. How do I go about finding my music files? I tried to revert to the original location & "organize" the library but this did not help. Thanks!

The backup you made before a major reorganization of your library?
I get the feeling you probably were not moving your library correctly in the first place.  It sounds like you were moving only media, not the entire library which is moved by copying the entire iTunes folder to the other drive, then starting iTunes with the option/alt key held down and choosing the library.itl file in the folder on the other drive.
Organizing copies media to a new location.  The original files should still be where they were.  However, your library was told to point to them on the external drive only it messed up in the middle.
Try this.  Get info on a broken link.  Find the file on the internal (good) drive that corresponds to that track.  If iTunes asks if you want to find others, say yes.  See if that re-links the files so you're back to where you started at least.

  • Almost all the songs have exclaimation points, and some won't sync

Almost of the songs in my iTunes library have exclaimation points next to them and I can't listen to them. Then, I added new songs to my library and sync-ed my iPod, but the library has 327 songs, and my iPod only has 290. Can anybody help?

The exclamation point means that itunes has lost track of your music files.
Did you try moving or deleting some files from your computer?
check the my music/itunes folder and see if the music files are there.
If so, you can open itunes and click on file>add folder to library
navigate to your itunes music folder, select it and click ok
This will re-associate your music files back to the the itunes database.
    hope this helps

  • IPod won't sync, and the contents have gone

Can't update my iPod - message is that it is because all of the playlists on my iPod no longer exist.
The songs, ratings, playlists, and so on are all safe in my library, but there is nothing left on my iPod and I can't load anything on it.
Why doesn't it sync so what is on my computer goes on to my iPod? Anyone met this issue before?

Sorted - it was only syncing playlists, so changing the setting cleared the problem. Breathes sigh of relief.
