Most pictures are black in Photo's preview

Hi!
I restored a backup from Time Machine. Now most pictures are black in Photo's preview. How can I fix this?
Thank you

Did you restore an iPhoto Library or a Photos Library?  Are your photos RAW or JPEG?
And how did you restore from Time Machine? Did you drag the library from the drive or did you open Time Machine and used "Restore"?

Just make certain that the "Originals" or "Masters" are in your iPhoto Library before you trash the images.
You can find out by selecting the iPhoto Library file with the control key held down, then open the Library (which is, actually, a folder). You'll see a folder named "Originals" or "Masters" and you can check there to make certain that you have all of the high-res images in your iPhoto Library. If you do, you can safely trash the original files, although I would, if it were me, make an archive of the images before trashing (either on an external HD or on archival DVDs).
    Make sense?

  • All iPhone4 Flash Pictures Are Black Dark?

I searched the forums and don't see this particular problem. It might have coincided with an IOS upgrade on my iPhone4, but I'm not sure. This did used to work, but now any flash picture I take with my iPhone4, the short preview looks OK, but the thumbnail and saved pictures are both black. I tried rebooting the phone, Auto and manual flash, HDR, etc. with no change. Movies with the flash on are OK. Has anyone else seen this or know how to fix?

i also have this problem. except the preview with mine is also black. anyone figure anything out yet?

  • How do you select what pictures are in your photo stream?

I don't understand how pictures are included in the photo stream. Have an iphone 4 that I want to set up so all the pictures/videos are available on my mac book??

If you Mac meets the system requirements outlined here: http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/mac.html, sign into your iCloud account and turn on photo stream.  You can't use photo stream for videos; you'll have to import them as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.

  • TS3989 all my pictures are in the photo stream on my phone but not in my photo stream on my computer

i have to get a new iphone because my speakers are blown and i was double checking to make sure all my stuff was backed up on my icloud and i noticed that all my pictures show up in the photostream album on my phone but the last 20 pictures are nowhere to be found in the photostream folder on my computer.

If older photos are missing it may be because photo stream photos are only held in iCloud for 30 days.  After that they are removed from iCloud but will remain (up to 1000 photos) on your device until deleted.  Also, only photos taken after enabling photo stream are added to your photo stream, and only when the camera is closed, your device is connected to wifi and you have at least 20% battery life remaining.
To transfer the missing photos you can either create a shared photo stream containing them and invite yourself to it (see http://help.apple.com/icloud/#mmc0cd7e99), import the photos to your computer and sync them to your iPad, or use an app like PhotoSync to transfer them to your iPad over wifi.

  • When i print from the web pictures are black and white not color

Having trouble with printing from web the pictures are not color on;y black and white. Ink levels are fine and I have run cleaning and aligning tools. What other solutions am I missing?

I have tried 100%, AutoZoom, Page width, page fit and actual size and they are all the same size. About 2/3s the size it should be. My printer is set correctly
and I also reset the printer in msconfig as suggested by another helper. It changed to default and this has not helped. Do I need to reset the msconfig file back to user?

  • Half of my pictures are black after restoring iPhone on ios4!!

I am having difficulty with my photos. My iPhone was really slow after the update so I heard restoring it would help. Yes, it did make it faster but...half of my pictures are completely blank. I can still open them up and see the pictures (well sometimes). I had some pictures that I was proud of and I can't even open them!! Ios4 is frustrating!!!

So what should I do? Is there anything I CAN do? (I forgot that lol)

  • Thumbnails are OK, but many pictures are black in slideshow

I have been using iPhoto8 for some time and have over 35,000 pictures on it (275GB on backed up external drives and in several independant libraries). Recently new as well as old photos show up black when I "expand" them (either in slideshow or for alterations"; previously they were OK. Some I can restore by right click on them and reverting to original; for others, the process is impossible (revert to original command is grayed out). In most cases this happens with slides I scanned with a Nikon SF-200 using Vue Scan software, but it is starting to happen with digital originals as well (alpha 900 in jpg mode). This is a serious nuissance as I publish books... What is happening and what can I do?

Rebuilding does not take up additional disk space. How much free space do you have on the boot drive? It's recommended that a minimum of 10 GB of free space be available for optimum performance.
What format were the photos scanned to?
Rebuilding does not affect any other libraries. For the rebuild launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the last three options.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: iPhoto 8's new option in it's rebuild library pane, "Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" may make this tip obsolete. We'll know when users have occasion to use it and see if that's the case.

  • Pictures are black

I just got a Canon SLR camera camera and it worked for the first few days but now every picture i take turns out black on the screen. What should i do?

Did you take off the lens cap?
Sorry... I couldn't resist. I suppose there is a point to the question, though... sometimes the problem is very easily solved because it has a simple cause.
Have you looked at your camera settings? How do you normally shoot? In full auto? Did you accidentally move the "mode" dial, causing you to shoot in a mode that may result in extremely underexposed pictures?
As a previous poster asked, do the photos show up as black when you download them to your computer? If not, then there may be an issue with the display screen on the camera. This doesn't mean the screen is broken - it could be that your settings have changed so that photos aren't displayed on the screen.
Have you tried a different lens on the camera? Do you get the same results? That might help identify whether the issue is with the lens or the camera.
Did you update the firmware on the camera? One thing that people often overlook is the fact that the camera software needs to be updated fairly regularly. And, cameras often don't have the most recent firmware installed when the ship because the cameras are manufactured prior to software updates. You can check your camera's current firmware version from the Menu screen - then you can check Canon's website to see the most recent firmware release. Your instruction manual has detailed instructions about installing firmware updates, but basically it involves downloading the software, copying it to your CF card, and putting the CF card into the camera and installing it.
That's what I can come up with, off the top of my head. If you are still within the return period, you may just want to return it and get a new one. I'm sure it's still under warranty, but warranty repairs can be a real pain.
I hope you get it resolved!

  • Imported pictures are black

I imported pictures into iPhoto and they are showing up as black rectangles. Yet when I doubleclick them to view them in editor the details of the pictures show up. Does anybody know why they show up as black rectangles, initially?? Are the smaller pictures the thumbnails? I don't want black thumbnails and would like to fix them so that they appear with picture details.

You will have to do it outside of the library so export the all out of the library as original files. Then download and unzip this Automator workflow application, Convert to JPG and Embed sRGB profile and drop all of the photos onto it to batch process them. Import after completed.
You can download the app from Toad's Cellar

  • All Pictures are black

All I can see in iPhoto are thumbnails, thumbnails and more thumbnails. Nothing but thumbnails!
    I've done:
    Repair Permissions
    Rebuild Thumbnails
    Repair Database
    Rebuild Database
I've created a brand new blank library and imported a new photo.
I've done a Reveal in Finder=>Original File and looked at and viewed the picture in a preview.
But absolutely nothing will allow me to view a photo. Old photos, newly imported photos. Photos imported from my phone. Photos imported from my camera. Photos imported from my son's camera.
What can I do? I'm desperate.
I think this happened after I upgraded to Mavericks but I can't be sure.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Pictures are overlapping in photo library. When I double click the picture the bottom (correct picture) shows.

Pictures in Photo are over-lapping. Yet when I double click the picture, the correct picture appears. How do I fix this?

Sounds like corrupted thumbnails.  First try this: Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
    2 - run Option #4.
3 - if that doesn't fix the problem rerun with Option #2. It might take more than one attempt.

  • HT204655 what i add pictures to photos  then i go to face book to add a photo and it is not there  if i restart my computer the pictures are then in photos using facebook any idea why they are not immediatly availible?

i go to post on facebook and the piccture i have imprted to photos and i see in photos is not inmy photos to add to post in facebook
if i restart my computer then they are there  any suggestions appreciated thank you for your time

I would try quitting your browser and closing down Facebook rather than restarting the whole system.
My guess would be that, if you have been using Facebook and have already accessed the Photos library, then a snapshot of the library directory (and therefore, pictures) has been taken by Facebook. That may not be updated if you then switch to Photos and import something new, or make changes there, and then switch back to Facebook.
Restarting Safari, or whatever browser you use, and then re-visiting Facebook may, when you try to add the new picture, refresh the directory and make the change(s) visible.
This would be my guess, and suggestion.

  • Iphone 4 just upgraded to 7.0 my pictures are black - how to fix?

just upgraded software and now about every other picture comes out black when I go to view.  I see the picture ok on camera roll but cannot sucessfully retrieve it.  This has only started after upgrading software.  How can I fix?

    Try This...
Close All Open Apps... Sign Out of your Account...  Perform a Reset... Try again...
Reset  ( No Data will be Lost )
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Release the Buttons.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
    And this... Reset all settings
Settings > General > Reset > Reset all Settings.
This will return all iDevice settings to factory defaults... you will not lose any data.... But you will have to re-enter all of the device settings.

  • All photos in portrait format are displayed blurred in the preview mode "fill" of the library. In all other modes e.g. "fit"or "1:2" the photos are sharp. How can I change this, so that the photos are still sharp when displaying them in the mode "fill"?

All photos in portrait format are displayed blurred in the preview mode "fill" of the library. In all other modes e.g. "fit"or "1:2" the photos are sharp. How can I change this, so that the photos are still sharp when displaying them in the mode "fill"? My Lightroom release is 5.7.1.
    Thanking you in anticipation!

I'd like to get all these '-1 suffix' files together with their associated Develop adjustments into one folder (if they aren't already) so I can see them in Grid view in the Library module, which I use as my basic starting point for everything else at this early stage of my Lightroom 'career'.
To see what folder these are stored in, right-click on a photo and select "Go to Folder in Library".
Advice: if you are going to use Lightroom effectively, you probably want to stop using folders as your method to create a grouping of photos that are already in Lightroom; there are plenty of built-in tools, such as keywords, collections, color labels, etc.
I don't understand why the search on the entire catalog picked up apparently the same two file versions but also got the Develop adjustments when going to the relevant Folder didn't show the adjustment black squares against each image in Grid view nor were they there when the images were opened in the Develop module.  Perhaps if I understood this, I'd be a bit more confident of moving forward myself.
These are most likely different versions of the same photo, in different folders. Lightroom stores the edits in its own catalog, and so it knows that one folder's photos have edits, and the other folder's photos do not have edits. Please understand that Lightroom is a database, it knows where the photos are at the time you import them (or add them to the catalog by synchronize), and then if you move things around in your operating system, Lightroom does not know anything about that and problems begin. Thus the advice to organize using Lightroom tools and methods and not operating system tools and methods.
