Motherboard fan mount needed

Hello, I am trying to repair a family members desktop (HP Pav. 6240f). Complaint was : not able to complete boot. Machine constantly shutting down. Upon inspection machine was indeed shutting down soon into booting up. Found a problem with the motherboard.  The heat sink and fan assembly had loosened from its mount. The mount had crumbled into pieces, I am assuming due to heat? My attempt at repairing the problem would be to find a replacement mount, apply paste and re-assemble. I am assuming the system shutdown was exactly what it was supposed to do. I am not a computer tech, had some electronic training in the USMC and work with my hands, figured I give it a try. I have looked on-line, but haven't come up with a replacement. I would appreciate any help available in regard to this problem THANK YOU.

Let's try to walk you through some points, as I understand it.
The CPU chip is mounted into it's Socket 775.  The heatsink has thermal paste for heat transfer.
From what I see of the mount (upgrade/service manual) there are 4 posts that secure the physical heatsink/fan, called retension clips, found here. Are these want your asking about?

  • MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR - Noisy Grinding Motherboard Fan

    Hi,
The Motherboard Fan on my MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR has started to make a terrible grinding noise and I was hoping someone could offer some help on how to replace it.
Some of the questions I have are -
+ Is the Motherboard Fan screwed on or glued on?
+ Could I replace it with a suitable heatsink (no fan)?*
+ If it is glued on, what is the best way to remove it?
+ If it is glued on, could I just unplug it and stick a new fan on top of the existing one?
+ Has anyone else had this problem and if so what did you do to fix it?
    * I was looking at a Zalman Motherboard Heatsink from http://www.quietpc.com/uk/vgamb.php
    Thanks in advance, Jason.

I got the motherboard replaced from the recall.  But the problem is the tech did not put in the Model # and serial on the motherboard.  Is there any motherboard manuals that might tell me if the specs have been upgraded etc??

  • External Hard Drive Won't Mount- Need to recover files

    Hello Everyone,
I am hoping that one of you fine mac experts may be able to assist ~
Problem: External Seagate FreeAgent Desktop USB external hard drive
won't mount on desktop=ie: no access to my important files.. Please Help!
    Details:
External seagate freeagent 500 GB Desktop USB HD ( only 2 months old)
(using for document / file backup-not as a startup disc)
    on my Mac G3 350 MZ Blue & White Tower /768 ram/ running OSX 10.1.5 & OS9.2~
    ~
Problem: Started using the external 500 GB HD 2 months ago -with no problems-until this morning. Tried to double click to open it to access files
and got the "beach ball of death" and needed to restart.
My trusty G3 started up fine, however, the external HD was now
not showing up on the desktop as normal. I troubleshooted -by restarting,
trying different a/c plugs/ different USB ports , ran disk utility..called
seagate -not much help . Seagate said to try the HD on another mac-which I did-
    a G5 tower- same problem.
    ~
The External hard drive will show up in disk utility, but is grayed out.
and when click "mount" same two messages keep showing:
message 1: "a disk attempting to mount as unknown has failed verification or has failed to
mount.please use disk utility to check the disk"
    ~
message 2- when unplugging and repluggin the usb in-and upon
restart:" you have inserted a disk containg no volumes that mac osx
can read to use unreadable volumes, click initialize to continue with the disk inserted ,click continue"
    ~
( I really need access to these files- and do not want to re-initialize the HD!!)
I ran Disk Utility /first aid "verify & repair , the following info came up:
Repairing disk "main backup 2007 ".
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid key length ( <<<IN RED )
    Repair completed. "
    ~~
Though it said the repair was completed, the "invalid key length" issue
still comes up when re-running disk utility...Hard drive would still not
mount on desktop-even after restarting .
    ~~~~~
    If there is a mac genius out there that can help?- it would be greatly
    appreciated. I have tried to call seagate several times in the last several hours-
    1st time-they disconnected me after being on hold 10 minutes-2nd call
    I was put on hold for 40 minutes ..Finally spoke to someone ( they are not mac users or mac experts!)and he said I would need to send it to Seagate's Data Recovery-... for a fee of course!
    ~~~
At this point, I am hoping to just get the files and photos off
the hard drive- I heard about Disk Warrior-should I use that and if so
    what version?
    Thank you very much!
    L

Will zapping the PRAM be of any use in getting the external to mount on the desktop?
Your external Hard drive is already recognized. But it cannot be mounted on the desktop due to its directory damage. You can certainly Zap the PRAM, and it will not hurt anything, but I am skeptical that it will change the situation.
Do you think the Disk Warrior 4.0 cd will even work on my G3 350MHZ running Mac OS 10.1.5?
If you boot from the CD and run it from the CD, absolutely yes. If you attempt to INSTALL it from a download or a CD, probably not.
Have you ever used Disc Warrior and is using it complicated?
I own and use Disk Warrior. You select the drive to be rebuilt, it builds a proposed new directory from the information and file fragments available.
When complete, it will provide a list of problems encountered, tell you what files have been placed in the "Rescued Items" folder, and allow you too look at your drive using the proposed new directory. Your only decision is whether the new directory seems to be an improvement over the old \[in your case, hopelessly corrupted] directory. You then tell it whether to replace the old directory with the proposed new directory, or to abandon its work and leave your Hard Drive unchanged.
Is there a good chance that the ext HD will still have my files on it- or do you think from what I've described that they are gone ?
From what you have described, your files are very likely to still be there. Sometimes in a situation like this, a handful of files cannot be recovered.
My other thought was to take the external HD there and have them try to recover the files.
Make sure you completely understand the costs involved. File recovery using a service like DriveSavers can run into many hundreds of dollars. They are prepared to disassemble your drive in a clean room and replace controller boards and read/write heads to achieve success. Your drive has serious, but not fatal, Directory damage. The Hardware, and most of your files, are likely just fine.

  • Internal Hard Drive will not mount -- need help!

My Mac Dual 450 has been a constant problem since I installed Tiger several weeks ago. There have been crashes every day. Disk First Aid did not help. Then I discovered I had TechTool Deluxe which I had gotten from Apple a few months ago. It has diagnostics for just about everything you can think of. I tried it. Big mistake.
Everything came out OK except it said there were some bad blocks, and an invalid BTree node size 8.0 (whatever that is). I tried to get it to repair the HD and it said it could not, that the HD was not mounted (I had booted from TechTool disk). Then I tried to reboot from the internal HD and I got a big bad black box saying that I had to restart. I tried that many times and kept getting the message. I booted from the Apple Tiger install disk and tried to run Disk First Aid on my HD but it said there were problems and Disk First Aid could not correct them because the HD was not mounted. I tried this and the TechTools Disk many times. Same result.
I then booted from an external system 9.2.2 HD and tried to use the Disk First Aid on that. Same result: it said the Macintosh HD (my internal) was not mounted so Disk First Aid could not repair it.
I have tried everything I could think of (option-boot, C-boot, etc) and nothing will let me boot from the internal HD or even mount it. I spent quite a bit of time with AppleCare rep and he could not succeed in getting the HD to mount.
He suggested either trying Disc Warrior which I do not have, or possibly resetting the PMU on the logic board and he sent me instructions for that, which seem ominous to say the least. And I doubt that it would solve my problem since the computer sees the HD, it just can't mount it. Resetting the PMU seems to be for computers that can't see the HD and won't start. But mine does just fine with other start-up disks.
Are there any suggestions on what else I can try? Is there a program that can be downloaded that mounts hard drives?
My Mac Dual 450 has 1.25 gb of RAM.
Thanks for any help. I need it fast.

Thank you for your suggestions and your continuing interest in trying to solve my problem. I rebooted with CMD + S and got the black screen with white text. Unfortunately I could not type anything on it. I typed /sbin/fsck -y and hit return. Nothing showed on the screen. I waited awhile in case this was one of those situations where it is hidden. But nothing happened. I tried the whole sequence a couple more times and same thing: I was unable to type anything that would show up on the screen.
Am I missing something here? I tried typing holding down various keys and could not get anything to register.
For what it is worth, the last line that showed on the screen is "panic. We are hanging here..."
I do not think that is related to what I typed since it was there when the screen first appeared, but could it nonetheless have somethng to do with my computer or hard drive?
I am right now installing system X.4 onto an external HD. If I can get that to boot and work OK, I can just use that for awhile until I get the internal either replaced or repaired.
If you see my previous posts, I had a devil of a time installing system X.4 to begin with. Maybe my HD was troubled all this time??? Or could there be some other underlying problem with my Dual 450? I suppose I will find out when I try to boot from the external.
Incidentally, I have an external HD with 9.2.2 on it and have had no trouble booting from it or using it.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Startup disk "Not mounted", needs to be repaired but can't get it to mount

I did a Verify Disk because my HD has been having issues. It told me I needed to backup and reformat, so I went ahead and backed everything up and went to DU in recovery mode.
But when I got there, my Macintosh HD showed up as "Mount Point: Not Mounted", so I did the following:
I clicked on the Macintosh HD from the list and clicked "Mount". It gives me the following:
    Mount failed
The disk "Macintosh HD" could not be mounted.
Try running First Aid on the disk and then try mounting.
So I click "Verify Disk" and it gives me this:
Disk Utility stopped verifying "Macintosh HD"
This disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk.
So I go to click Repair Disk but it's grey and cannot be selected, I assume because my drive is not mounted.
So how can I'm in a paradox and REALLY need help with getting my startup drive mounted again. Can anyone help?
Let me know if I can provide more info for troubleshooting and thank you in advance!

Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • G5 Unusual Fan Issue - Need Help

While I have read much about the G5 fan issues, I haven't found anything that matches mine.
This is a 1.8Ghz DP running OS 10.4.9 and it is really noisy due to the 2 drive bay fans running at top speed.
All other fans run properly and respond to the air deflector removal (also checked using iStat Pro)
Apple hardware diagnostics check out fine with everything passing and ambient temperature of the drive area is fine (90 or so degrees)as well.
I understand that the drive temperature sensor controls the speed, but typically the issue has been the other way around. Would unplugging the sensor for testing hurt the logic board? Could the fan be bad? How about the FCU? the other fans seem to work as advertised.
From the sounds of it, the Thermal calibration wouldn't be needed.
Does have anybody any idea of how to correct this or can the FCU be reset? I did reset the PMU several times.
    Thanks

Strangely enough, the answer to the problem was that the rpm controls in both the fan and the blower of the media bay were damaged. Power spike?
While they are difficult to come by (they can't be purchased separately as they are part of the enclosure assembly) they are certainly cheaper than a logic board.
Btw, if anyone else has a similar issue, the media blower is the only truly unique part. The media fan is the same as the fan in the speaker/fan assembly which can be easily found.

  • S9e Fan problems - need help ASAP

    Hi,
I need quick help; my poor netbook is running without fan on. I can't really use it but carefully I can chat on msn and check pages that don't require flash and things like that. It's between 60°C and 72°C.
I've been using an S9e for more than a year, and didn't have problems besides fan always being on, but I got used to it.
So the reason why I'm posting..
Last week the fan began to only sometimes give a weird noise - but other times it worked normally  - like something was making it hard for it to spin, I thought I'd might have to put some oil into it or clean out the dust.
But today, when I turned it on, when I got home from school, I noticed that fan didn't spin up on boot as it should, and used to.
I thought it wasn't a big thing, kept computing, but when I didn't hear the fan for atleast an hour I started to be afraid.
I checked the temperature it was quite hot, so I quickly turned it off. Disassembled it (out of warranty already), to check if it was just dust. No, it was quite clean.. Checked the cables, then reassembled the netbook. Hoped that it will spin up upon booting, but it did not. I checked and the fan works when it gets it's 5V, but the system simply does not power it, or I don't know.
Here's when I have ran out of ideas..
Please help if you can, I need it.
    Thanks in advance,
    iScream

Hmm. If the fan had been making noises, I would tend to blame the fan. You can order a replacement here -> http://www.lenovospareparts.com/31035655--S10-Fan-and-Heatsink_p_309.html
Less likely, but possible is that the control circuit on the system board is toast. I think I would try to replace the fan, even though you can force it to run with 5V.. first.

I have a 15.4"  T60P 8744-C9U with ATI Mobility FireGL V5250. The fan makes weird noise - the Laptop overheats and goes to sleep. I need to replace the fan (or the whole assembly).
    1. What is the part number?
    2. What else do I need (Thermal Paste / Screw driver etc?)
    3. Are there any instructions / Videos etc?
    4. Where can I buy the fan from?
    Thanks for your help!!!
    edit:
I did a little digging and the part number seems to be 41W6409. However one ebay item says that it is for integrated grahics. I am consufed. Please help me find the correct part number.

  • Motherboard FAN Sensors

    Hi,
I am not sure if this happened all along, or only after I installed the CoreCenter.
My current system consist of P4 3.0 (with HT), MSI 865PE Neo2 Series Motherboard, 2GB RAM. Graphics Card is ATI 9250, 1 Creative Audigy Platimum. I have 2 SATA hdd, WD500DB and Seagate 250GB. 1 IDE WD200GB, 1 TDK 40/12/48B and Benq DW1670. The PSU is seasonic m12-2 430w, newly acquired). I did not do any overclocking, i.e. did not install CoreCenter, until recently.
After I installed the CoreCenter, out of the blue, it will trigger off the alarm that the CPU fan is not running although I can still see the fan spinning well. All the fans (CPU, 2 casing fans) in the system at that time is reported to have 0 RPM. Is it because motherboard is dying, or it is an issue of the Software that cause the senor to malfunction?
        Please help. Thanks in advance.
    Regards.

Uninstall Core Center completely.  Can you see anything about fan speeds in BIOS (H/W Monitor)?
Install SpeedFan and Everest Ultimate (latest Trial Version) and check what they have to say about your fans.
I did install the sensor view. At the time of failure, the sensor view also display the fan RPM as 0. After I restart the server, every thing goes back to normal. Strange.
Anyway, I have uninstalled the CoreCenter, and installed the SpeedFan. Will carry on to monitor the system.

  • Motherboard Fan Headers

I have an 865peneo-2 platinum board. I have heard that some speed sensing fans wont work with the motherboard headers. They might burn the headers out. Can someone educate me on what wattages and current rating and such these headers can support?
    Thanks

i have herd @ 2 watts, but i cannot say for sure,i use a zalman for cooling task on the cpu, dont use any fan controling prog as its not loud and keeps the temps low, although i do use a northwood and will never use a preshot!Quote

looking at your sig you might want to get a better PSU as 13 amps on the 12volt rail iis very low for your sys.

    Hi all,
I think this issue was raised before, but anyway here goes. I bought my desktop in 2005, a t3240.pt with Asus PTGA-LA motherboard with a PCIe 16 slot, P4 3.0 Ghz, 2M of RAM,
I need to install a new graphics cards which was stated in previous post a Nvidia GT240 512MB, does the manufacturar need to be nvidia or can I go for Asus. At the moment on the market I can purchase a
Asus GeForce PCI-E GT240 512Mb DDR3 for a reasonable price. I can purchase a Asus Gforce 8600 GT 512MB, will these be compatible with my MB?
I would also like to know if I purchase a graphics card with more memory?

ATI or NVIDIA does not matter. Some people just have preferences of one over the other. The only trick is knowing the characteristics of the GeForce models.
If you want one with more RAM then you will also need to upgrade your PSU.
The cards with 1GB of VRAM almost invariably have a requirement for  a 450 Watt or better PSU and at least one six-pin PCI Express power connector.
The original PSU (300 Watt) does not have the connector nor the power capacity..
    Best regards,

  • Fan broken. need to check if the card is alive

    Hi,
Today i've found the fan on my NX6600GT broken while the computer was on (no games, just desktop applications working). I've turned off the computer and let the card cool (it was really hot). The plastic on the fan was nearly melting. Now i need to check if any component has been burnt on the card (if not, i won't send it to MSI but just replace the cooler with a better one). How this can be done safely? Can i temporarily replace the fan (leave the heatsink) with some chipset fan? I want to turn the computer on for an hour and see if something bad happens (like garbage on screen) indicating the card is damaged.
    Thanks in advance

A few minutes won't hurt, and likely it didn't do any real damage...but you don't know how long that fan's been stopped do you?
I wouldn't do anyhting other than just get to desktop and then shutdown.
I would look for an aftermarket solution rather than just trying to mess with the fan itself. The assembly is proprietary and there is not an option just to replace the fan with a standard type fan.
You could also consider an RMA if you have another card you can use temporarily. Otherwise you need to look in your region for a  e/retailer that sells aftermarket fans for the NX6600GT
