Motherboard for iMac 350 on eBay?

Well, I opened up the ole' 350 to replace the battery, and that was not the problem. The chip next to the battery was fried. The plastic pieces holding the heatsink over the chip had melted, and the heat sink was no longer attached.
I can get a motherboard pulled from a working unit for $25.00 including shipping. The eBay seller has a 100% feedback rating, so maybe that would be the ticket. Or, maybe I should just chunk the thing. All I use it for anymore is some ole' OS 9.1 stuff I have and also as an internet/email backup if my iBook has problems (necessary for business reasons).
Should I waste any more time with this ole' computer, or should I spend a couple of hundred bucks for a little better backup unit? I have a fairly new KSB monitor now collecting dust. Maybe I should pick up the last version of the Rev 2 B&W and use that.

Its your call. The two main considerations are space and cost.
If you have the room for a tower and monitor I would say that is a better route. It offers more expansion and is more easily repaired than an AIO.
If you have the funds, say $200, go for a DA G4 tower or if you have only half of that then go for a Rev2 B&W G3. Plus that way you can also send me the analog/video board from your imac.
It really depends what you plan on using the machine for and what value you put upon having a faster machine that should determine what you are willing to spend.

  • Need Help with iMac 350 - Won't boot - keyboard or mouse not working!

    Hello,
I've scoured the web looking for answers, and can't find any, so maybe someone here would be kind enough to help. I'm working on an imac 350 blueberry for my sister and I'm having all sorts of trouble.
She bought it last week, it started up (8.6 os) no problem. Powered up and down a few times, then all of a sudden, it won't boot. I'm currently getting blinking folder/happymac/question mark when trying to start up.
Here's the big problem - the keyboard and mouse do not work now. I've tried three different mice and three keyboards and no dice with any of them. I have the 8.6 CD from her previous imac (bondi), and I can hear it spinning, but there is no way to start up from cd.
I've also tried 2 other hard drives with the same results.
Tried resetting CUDA on logic board, taking out battery, no change. Bought new battery- no change.
I would love to at least get the keyboard working to see if I can even startup from cd, anyone have any clues on how to get it working? The strange thing is that the keyboard has a power on button, and it works to start the thing up, but dies when it tries to boot. Sometimes I just get a grey screen with the pointer icon, and I can move the pointer with the mouse for a second or two, then no response.
I appreciate any help or suggestions on locating the issues!
    Thank you!

When I said "but dies when it tries to boot" and "..then no response." I meant that the keyboard works to power up the computer, but won't work for anything else. So, I am figuring that the usb ports are supplying power to the keyboard and mouse, but the usb ports aren't relaying information from the keyboard or mouse.
How do you know the mouse isn't working? Won't you have to wait until later in the boot to tell?
The poweron key is a special case. I think that it works by lowering/changing the voltage on one of the usb cables. I read about this somewhere. Anyway, this function was eliminated from later usb keyboards and macs. Maybe a working power button doesn't mean what you think.
I would love to boot into open firmware
Could you try powering up from the machine? Is there a power button on the lower right of the machine?
Have you tried this key combo?
    commandoption+of
The letters are in lower case. Hold all down then poweron the machine. I'd poweron from the machine as apposed to the keyboard.
You could try another usb keyboard.
We actually did boot up the computer several times with it upside down. Not for any reason, except it's become a real PIA to flip it over every two minutes to start it, then take it apart and boot again. When booting either upside down or right side up it shows the same thing - blinking folder w/finder icon and question mark.
Yes, I agree. You could try removing the clear plastic around the bottom of the machine. At least you will not have to slide in the carriage. Note. The tv portion will still be surrounded by plastic! Don't remove the plastic around the tv!
Hope I am not interfering with Richard and his comments.
Richard: Is this the orginal keyboard? When did Apple get rid of the poweron key from the keyboard? My iMac 600 didn't have the key and my iMac 233 does.

  • Mac os x tiger for imac g4 needed

    Hi,
Some weeks ago I bought an iMac G4 at eBay for my son. The problem is, that the system was not delivered together with the original Mac OS X operating system CD/DVD ... The iMac came pre-installed with Tiger 10.4.11 but the system works instable, so that I would like to re-install the operating system. Where can I get a budget installation CD/DVD? How do I find the correct version, because the offers in eBay differ by "retail", "upgrade", "update", "only for Macbook Pro", etc.?
Thanks a lot for a quick feedback
    Raimund

You can only use a retail version of Tiger, or a retail version of Leopard.  The grey install discs are machine specific and won't work for you.  You might  be able to contact Apple and see if they have the install discs for your machine or perhaps they have Tiger or Leopard.

  • I bought my iMac Pro on ebay and would like to change the owner name to my own.

I bought my iMac Pro on ebay so did not get the chance to go through the Set up from the very beginning. I've noticed 2 consequences;  one is that the name of the user is not my own. The second is that when I go to facebook her name and password are in the log in boxes.
How can I change it to my own name?
I am not sure what operating system I have or where it says this.

By far the best thing to do is to do rannable's last suggestion and get rid of the previous user's account. Something they should have done instead of leaving personal information and passwords where you can easily get at them.
Open the System Preferences and click on the Accounts icon. Click the lock at the lower left. You will need to know admin password of the previous owner. Click the + button to create a new Administrator account. Fill in whatever name you want the account to have and choose a password. Click Create Account.
Log out and log back in to your new account. Go into the System Preferences again and the Accounts section. Click the lock button again, only this time, you would use the password for the new account you just created since that's what you logged into OS X with.
Highlight the old account and click the - button to delete it. Click the last radio button, "Delete the home folder" to completely remove the old account from the hard drive. Your new admin account will be the only one left.
Your new account will make the Mac look and behave like it just came out of the box since all of the desktop preferences will be the defaults. Customize to your liking.

  • IMac 350 MHz 10.3.9 DSL/Linksys router

    History:
iMac connected fine with my comcast cable modem/linksys router wired.
    10.3.9 iMac 350 MHz
When I brought it to my Brothers house (he has DSL and a linksys wired router) it won't connect with either DHCP or PPoe ...
    HELP!

DSL supplied by AT&T (SBC) or Verizon can have a router attached to the modem. It is my understanding that is true of most DSL suppliers.
The purpose of the router is to channel the demands of multiple computers at the customer end in an orderly manner into the DSL service (that allows only one connection at a time at the supplier end) so that the demand on the DSL supplier is the equivalent of a single computer. I believe some DSL suppliers allow more than one connection to their line, but I have not personally verified that.
I believe the suppliers' rules for cable service may be more restrictive than for DSL service, as additional connections degrades cable service, but not DSL service.

After installing a new motherboard, my imac opens pdf files with colorsync.  How do I reset it to open them with Adobe?

That makes sense Dennis.  I did that but was unable to find Adobe Reader in my Applications folder.  Of note though is that after a restart, the problem seems to have gone away.  So, disaster averted.  Thanks for responding though.  It's nice to have help on this stuff.

Contact HP support and they can advise on board replacement otherwise dissemble and use that board number and go to eBay and find a match and order a replacement board to replace the bad one.

  • IMac 350 Upgrade

    Hi,
I recently decided to attempt to upgrade my iMac 350 and would like to check a few things before i get started.
First of all, i am primarily wanting to put OS X on my iMac and then wanting to fit it with an airport card.
I have read on many different iMac upgrade websites that in order to run OS X i would need to increase the RAM. Am I correct in thinking that the i would be able to add just one PC100 SDRAM of 512MB or would i need to pair it up with another PC100 of 512Mb? Also, i have read that PC133 is the RAM i need to use. Are both PC100 and PC133 compatible with my iMac and is the PC133 RAM the more recent version?
I know that a lot of people have asked which is the best version of OS X to use when upgrading an iMac which is currently running OS 9.1 please would you be able to recomend which is the best version to use if i am planning to upgrade the RAM with the 512MB.
An issue that also has arisen is that i would need a little bit more hard drive than the original 7GB which came with my mac! i wondered if it would be possible to increase the hard drive space, or whether i could just use an external hard drive.
Finally i would just like to confirm that in order to make my iMac wireless internet compatible i need to get hold of the original airport card which was released when my iMac caame out (around 2001) and also an iMac airport card adaptor. Please could you confirm where this is the case or whether i am able to buy a more recent version of the airport card.
Sorry for the long windedness of my question!
    Thanks
    Ian
Mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
Mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You'd be able to run OS X with 512 MBs of memory, although many Forum regulars would recommend adding more. You don't need to match the memory DIMMs in both slots, so you could (as an example) use a 512 in one and a 256 in the other. Your iMac requires PC-100, but PC-133 that is backward-compatible can be used. My iMac DV 400 has one 512 MB PC-100 DIMM and another 512 MB PC-133 DIMM, and they coexist without any problems. I'd recommend OS 10.3.x (Panther) for your iMac 350, because it's less demanding of older computers than the current version OS 10.4.x (Tiger) - which requires onboard FireWire. Panther is discontinued, but you can find it available online, so get a universal installer/retail version of the installer disks, and not another model Mac's Restore CD or DVD. Lacking onboard FireWire ports, an external hard drive connected via USB 1.1 is not a viable option. Your internal hard drive can be replaced with any 3.5" (IDE/EIDE) ATA-100 or ATA-133 drive (not a SATA drive). A 120 GB drive is the largest capacity that can be installed and be fully-recognized. The next size and larger (160 GBs —>) will only be recognized as 128 GBs. Here's a Macworld article, with very detailed instructions for hard drive replacement in the slot-loading iMacs. In lieu of the original AirPort card w/adapter that you'd need, you could also use a wireless ethernet transceiver, like the Linksys WET-54G. The device requires no drivers and plugs into the ethernet port, converting it to a wireless signal.
As is often pointed out, by the time that you invest your money in additional memory, a larger hard drive, the OS installer media, and the wireless card, you will have spent enough to consider purchasing a newer Mac having the capabilities that you want. After buying/installing all of the hardware listed, you'll never be able to recover the total costs for doing so, if you attempted to sell the upgraded iMac 350 a week later.

  • PCI Option For iMac

I own a professional recording studio. The studio and the software I use was purchased with a Mac in mind from the start. Unfortunately after spending far too much money on my mics, outboard gear, mixing console and the rest the bank was broke and a Mac capable of running the studio was not in the budget. I had always had a tower in mind because it always was dominant Mac and could be expanded. Also for one major reason, use PCI based plugins and my interface for recording needs a PCI slot to run as well. With the advances in Mac over the last couple years months the iMac could fit my needs far better than a tower, and with a 24" screen, it would be ideal for mixing. Are there PCI options out there for iMacs, such as something that would plug in via firewire or ethernet? Thought I's ask the experts.
    thanks

I hate to disappoint you but iMacs are not designed for expansion. They do not have available PCI slots for third-party cards. For that you need a tower style Mac. You might consider something from the G4 or early G5 Power Mac tower lines such as the QuickSilver or Mirrored Drive Door G4s or one of the earlier G5 models that still have PCI slots. Later G5s have PCI-X slots. Because these are no longer in production they can be purchased used through eBay or some online retailers who vend used/refurbed older Macs.

  • Will latest Media Player work on updated iMac 350?

I've bought a 120 gig Seagate 7200 speed HD, 512 megs more ram, and a retail version of Panther to upgrade my mom's iMac. For the most part she will only use Safari, Mail, & put a few digitial camera photos on it to view and store. However, she recently signed up for Netflix movie rentals and currently can't view the media player trailers in OS 9.1 - they don't offer Quicktime trailers (which I've contacted them and requested they please offer Quicktime trailers with no response from Netflix).
Will she be able to view them in Panther if she downloads media player? From the minimum system requirements (like a G3 with 400 or 450 mhz) it at first glance appears she again can't view them; however, the system requirements are "recommended" and I'm wondering with this faster HD and around 640 megs of memory that perhaps it's possible - especially since the Netflix previews are fairly low resolution. Comments/real user experiences with the recent versions of media player on such an older system would be much appreciated.

So you think that the latest Windows media player will work on the iMac 350, it just may stall sometimes.
I know the previous version of Media Player is still avaliable, would it work any better on older machines like the iMac 350?
